Review:  The Weight of the Nation is a controvertial documentary that aired on HBO this year regarding weightloss.   The documentary itself is very well produced and most of the experts are dead-on...there are a few points that have found some intense debate online, but we'll leave you to explore this on your own.  The overall message on this one is strong and its a rather informative and extensive look at our biggest public health crisis.

Synopsis: Cole Younger & The Black Train traces Cole Younger's experiences with the Black Train - first as a teenager, then into adult life as he partners with Jesse James to create the most notorious outlaw band of the old West, the James-Younger gang.

Review: This one is a sort of biopic about Cole Younger, one half of the infamous James-Younger gang and how he got tracked down by the Pinkerton agency as a younger man.   Michael Madsen does a great job in this slightly campy, but fun western.

Synopsis: Bitten by a vampire while pregnant, Eric Brooks' mother gave birth to a baby boy a child born with all the strengths of a vampire and only one of its weaknesses. Struggling with a blood thirst, but imbued with supernatural powers, that child has become the vampire hunter know as Blade.

Review: There are four Marvel Comics based anime titles being released...X-Men, Iron Man, Wolverine and this one...Blade.   You may remember the Blade film trilogy and even the live-action TV show.  This continuation of the series consists of twelve episodes that follow Blade chasing Deacon Frost to Japan and encountering the local vampires that plague the area.  This one was a great watch..lots of action and fun for any comic book and anime fan.

Synopsis: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook and Spencer Locke star in Detention, a hipster, teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is Cinderhella, a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the school's student body. As the clock ticks and the bodies pile up, the likely suspects are embroiled in a race against time to stop Cinderhella and ultimately save the word... if only they can get out of detention.

Review:  This movie...its a horror comedy.  If you are familiar with that genre, then you should enjoy this one.  Furthermore, you need to be a Dane Cook fan, which is a select grouping of people, lol.  This one features horror killer Cinderhella and a group of teens fighting for their lives.  Is this the best movie ever?  Nah, but it sure was a fun watch.

Synopsis: When a worldwide viral outbreak leads to a plague of zombies scouring the earth for the living, two survivors flee the chaos of America to a remote island, hoping for a chance to start a new life. What they find is unrelenting horror. Beyond the hordes of the flesh-hungry undead, the other people already on the island force the pair into a fight-or-die battle amongst themselves. Armed only with crude weapons, they must descend to savagery and cutthroat tactics just to make it through each day. Packed with cutting-edge action and outrageous gore, Dead Season is a riveting new spin on the zombie genre!

Review: The zombie genre has gone wild in recent years.  Far from Romero's classic tales, the mainstream has picked upon this horror phenom and run with it.  Dead Season goes back to the Romero-esque roots and doesn't go overboard on budget making a hollywood film..they make a zombie film.  The characters and dialogue are engaging and the situations that examine the idiocies in human nature are spot-on. Ths slice of life tale within a zombie apocalypse is just what Romero would do and its a wonderful fix for those into the genre..like this guy.  Thumbs up!

Synopsis: Amanda Tapping returns as Dr. Helen Magnus in the amazing fourth season of the hit Syfy series, promising bigger myths and greater surprises than ever before.

Review: This blu-ray release is the fourth season of the Syfy hit Sanctuary.   Sci-Fi fans rejoice when we get a show with consistant quality like this.  The Fourth season, though not loved by all fans, took risks and I feel they paid off.  The outstanding episodes include Tempus and Icebreaker.  Low points in this season...the what seems to now be essential musical episode.  I was NOT into that whatsoever.  Other than that, this one was a complete win and a must-have for any fan.

Review: What does one say about Ice Road Truckers?  Much like the show Dirty Jobs, IRT has shown us that some people live on the edge on a daily basis.  I definately do not envy these guys and gals as they truck across dangerous terrains to deliver their loads.   This season, season two, focuses on their trek through the Andes.  Oh my god its dangerous and on edge the entire time.  A great watch.

Review: Dan Vs. is a great animated show that features its main characters, Dan, versus just about everything that makes him angry.  He's generally pissed-off and after everyone, but wait...this show is funny AND there is nothing vile or obscene.  There is no cursing and disgusting behavior....its not South Park or Family Guy....yet its still funny.  You can watch this one with your older kids (10 and up) without any issues.  Win!

Synopsis: During the First World War, two French soldiers are captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp. Several escape attempts follow until they are sent to a seemingly impenetrable fortress which seems impossible to escape from.

Review: This blu-ray release is of the classic 1937 Jean Renoir french film.  The film, based on the book "The Great Illusion", which highlights the futility of war.  This is a fantastic transfer to blu-ray...the video quality is wonderful, especially for such an old noir film.   We recommend this one for anyone interested in vintage film and movies with a message.  The message in this one is timeless.

Synopsis: This series pays homage to Frank Miller's legendary Wolverine graphic novel from the 1980's. The series begins when Mariko, the love of Logan's life, is forced back to Japan by her crime-lord father, Shingen. Logan vows to get her back at any cost. Review: This DVD is one in a series of four different Marvel properties being brought to anime.  This aired on the G4 network originally.  The series focuses on Logan's travels to Japan and his lover Mariko, as seen in the legendary original Wolverine mini-series back in the early 1980s by Frank Miller.   If you enjoy anime, then you will love these episodes.  Any die-hard X-Men and Wolverine fan will enjoy hearing Steve Blum reprising his role as Wolverine...that really helps tie this series in.

Review: Transformers: Prime is the latest incarnation of one of the most popular franchises from the 1980s.  This DVD from Shout Factory collects seven episodes of the series, which airs on the HUB network into a film.  The episodes on the disc include:

Four of these episodes were released on the season one set, but three have yet to see release and seeing them all put together in this way makes for a fantastic movie experience. The show is very well-done and a joy for any Transformers fan. This is no single disc release, this is a well put together compilation for ultimate fans.

Review: I still remember when the Undertaker debuted in the then WWF when I was a kid, back in 1990.  In an era of brightly colored superhero types, the Undertaker immediately stood out as a dark force in wrestling.   His very presence was shocking and dark and was a fantastic foreshadowing to what direction wrestling would take with the WWE in the late 1990s and beyond.  Wrestlemania after Wrestlemania he has take down his opponants.  The streak, as its referred, is legend in wrestling and continues today.

This fantastic DVD set provides you will all 20 of his Wrestlemania wins and an in-depth documentary.  The documentary, at over 40 minutes long, has tons of footage, commentary and interviews with other top wrestlers.  Its a great watch and was my favorite part of this DVD set.

Whether its the classic "deadman" or the "american badass", he never fails to come through with a performance that gives 120% for the fans.  This documentary is a must-have for any serious wrestling fan.

Synopsis: Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fianc‚e, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debts. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garc¡a Bernal).

Review: Will Ferrell is at it again with his signature comedic wit. This deadpan spoof of the telenovella is a fantastic addition to Ferrell's body of work.  The film is absolutely hilarious, often in subtitles and always dry and uncomfortable.   Casa De Mi Padre successfully accomplishes what films like Nacho Libre missed...a deadpan and serious, yet absolutely hilarious film.

Synopsis: Matt Braunger's (Up All Night) second Comedy Central special Shovel Fighter is available on DVD and CD extended and uncensored just two days after the world television premiere. The follow-up to the successful album Soak Up the Night, Shovel Fighter is a hilarious special and must own for all comedy fans.

Review: Matt Braunger is a well-versed comedian.  You may have seen him in the past on MadTV and NBC's "Up All Night".  His role on Up All Night is the ackward and stiff neighbor dad.  I enjoy him in that role, so I decided to give his stand-up special a chance.  His pacing is rather quick...he barely pauses for a laugh before moving right onto the next joke.  His topics covered range, but are mostly completely inappropriate, which is fantastic.  Overall, its rather funny and definately worth the watch.

Synopsis: The Three Stooges (Moe, Larry, Curly) are on a mission. Left on a doorstep of an Orphanage run by nuns, the young Trio grows up finger-poking, nyuk-nyuking and woo-woo-wooing their way into trouble. Now years later, with the Orphanage forced to close its doors, the Three Stooges embark on a wacky mission to save the Orphanage. Hilarious Mischief and Mayhem ensues.

Review: The Three Stooges have been one of my favorite things since I was a kid.  I used to watch them on late night television, and then when I was older they would show the old shorts before movies at the drive-in theater.  In fact, I remember a channel when I visited my grandmother in Arizona that showed them 24 hours a day back in the 1990s.  Now, the Farrelly Brothers, kings of comedy in their own right, are re-imagining these classic characters for a new generation.  This is something that is long overdue and its done so well here.  The film serves as both an homage and a relaunch of this great troup.  The performances are fantastic, especially that of Will Sasso as Curly.  We highly recommend it for the entire family.

Part gamblers and part detectives, these seasoned veterans negotiate the fascinating and obscure world of storage auction and consignment, with personalities as colorful and varied as the treasures they uncover. In STORAGE WARS: VOLUME 3, the buyers are introduced to the world of vault auctions, Dave goes all in for a unit that hasn t been opened in 20 years and Barry has a brush with his own mortality.

Review: Oh, how we love Storage Wars!  (Storage Wars Texas, not so much).  This volume covers almost the rest of season two of the show (see the episodes included below).  We get more drama between Jarrod and Brandi, Dave Hester, Barry and Darryl.  Honestly, even though the odds that this show isn't put on are VERY low, that doesn't even matter to me.  The fun watching these guys loathe each other is worth it.  I don't expect anything real on TV..I reserve that for real life, lol.  This show is a TON of fun and most definately has us glued still.

Synopsis: The Note 3 is the third installment of one of Hallmark Channel's highest-rated movie series of all time, "The Note." Genie Francis and Ted McGinley reprise their roles as Peyton MacGruder (Francis) and King Danville (McGinley) and, in this installment, Peyton finds a baby abandoned on her doorstep. An anonymous note begs for Peyton to take care of the infant. As MacGruder and Danville search for the baby's rightful home, Peyton is stunned by the growing maternal instinct she feels for the small child.

Review: The Note film series are touching films that originally aired for the Hallmark Channel.  I remember watching the first of these, which I thought was fantastic.  This release is the third film, which takes the saga in a new direction, with a baby being left on Peyton and King's doorstep along with...you guessed it..a note.  This heartwarming tale unfolds as they try to find the baby a good home.  This one is fantastic and great for the entire family.

Synopsis: A gang of eunuchs is attempting to overthrow the Ming Dynasty, and sibling assassins Sister Ko (Michelle Yeoh) and Brother Sing (Tony Leung) must infiltrate the group to stop them in this Hong Kong action thriller from director Michael Mak (Dragon Inn).

Review: We love asian cinema here at the Legion.  Butterfly Swords is a fantastic new example of this cinema, with period action and fantastic political drama.  Michelle Yeoh is dynamic as ever and Tony Leung turns in a fantastic and daring performance.  There is non-stop action and some very cool characters in this one..it does not disappoint.

Synopsis: When rich girl Cocolonia (Megan Heyn) can’t shake her stuff at home because of her uptight mom (Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation), she hits the streets to join a dance crew who respond to every challenge with a dance .

Review: This new crazy comedy, Freak Dance, is definately an aquired taste.  Its from the mind of Matt Besser of the Upright Citizens Brigade.  This one one of those off-kilter spoof-comedies that won't appeal to everyone, but if you have the right mindset going in, its quite hilarious.  The comedy is bizarre and the dancing action is insane, but if you "get" the Upright Citizens, then you should love this one.

The special features on this DVD include: Commentary with writer/co-director, Matt Besser and co-director, Neal Mahoney, Deleted Scenes, Extended Scene, Trailer and The Dangers of Freak Dancing.

Synopsis: Filmed live in Los Angeles, Bellamy gives a terrific performance, engaging the audience on such topics as sex chat rooms, killer whales and their trainers, Jay-Z and Beyonce, making it rain in strip clubs and more.

Review: Bill Bellamy has put in his time as a stand-up comedian.  He was, in fact, the very first comedian to kick off the Def Comedy Jam back in the day.  In his latest one hour special, Crazy-Sexy-Dirty, he goes off on various celebs like Lil' Wayne, Internet Sex Chat rooms, airport security and more.  Bellamy has a wide appeal and a fantastic flow.  He doesn't miss a beat and though he targets some of his comedy, I found it all to have a universal appeal and it was absolutely hilarious.  He's a well-polished machine and this special is a must-have.

Synopsis: Frank (Joel Murray) has had enough of the downward spiral of American culture. Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Frank feels he has nothing left to live for. However, instead of taking his own life, he embarks on a killing spree with cohort Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement, and together they embark on a nation-wide assault on our country s dumbest, most irritating celebrities.

Review: God Bless America is a new violence satire from the mind of Bobcat Goldwaith.  I should say, the twisted mind of Bobcat.  You may remember him as Zed from the Police Academy films, but times have changed and this guy has a vision to share.  The film is a fantastic satire and a big FU to the establishment..celebrity, guns, religion...all types of things.  If you enjoy extreme liberal satire, you will LOVE this film.  If not, you may find it too preachy.  Us?  We loved it.  This one is laced with violence and some pretty extreme sequences at times..definately controvertial, but this loveletter to liberal disgust will live on as an instant cult classic.

Synopsis: Though no one can see him, Hollow Face lurks in the corners, desperately desiring love but only knowing how to spread fear and hate. He creeps into the life of John Farrow (Clive Owen) after Farrow s beloved 13-year-old daughter Mia (Ella Purnell) is assaulted in their home. The line between the real and the imaginary blurs as fissures start to open within the family unit. It seems that no security measure can keep Hollow Face out. From visionary filmmaker JUAN CARLOS FRESNADILLO (28 Weeks Later, the upcoming Highlander reboot), INTRUDERS is the chilling story of two children living in different countries, each visited nightly by a faceless being who wants to take possession of them.

Review: These days it seems that he classic terror of a horror movie is lost.  Its always gore and guts or stupid Paranormal Activity, Blair Witch style films.  The Intruders focuses on two children that are basically haunted by this guy called Hollow Face.  Not only is the tone and acting fantastic in this film, but the sheer terror that you feel along with the cast is unparalelled.  I haven't seen such a good quality and true horror film in years.  We highly recommend this one.

Season One - Season Two

Review: The Big Bang Theory is a hit show on CBS from the same mind that brought us Two and a Half Men, Chuck Lorre.  The first two seasons are finally being released on blu-ray...and its about time!  This show is a complete geekfest, but in the best possible way.  A hot blonde hangs out with a group of comic book and science nerds.  Thats all you really need to know about this show!  Of course the characters are over-exaggurated versions of nerds, but its a lot of fun.  We're pleased that they've gone back and released the first two seasons in high-definition...so many shows have yet to do so.

Review: Whoooa Jem!  Jem was one of the coolest cartoons of the 1980s.  Interlaced with music videos and dyed bright hair..crazy make-up, these characters enthralled a generation.  Shout Factory finishes up their run of Jem with this third and final season on DVD.  Thanks to Shout Factory fans can now get the show readily and at a decent price.  This DVD is phenominal..in fact many of these later episodes we had never had the opportunity to see, so that was quite a treat.  This one is a MUST for any Jem fan.

The last two singles in the group (Westfeldt and Scott) observe the effect that kids have had on their friends' relationships and wonder if there's a better way to make it work. When they decide to have a child together - and date other people, their unconventional 'experiment' leads everyone in the group to question the nature of friendship, family and, above all, true love. Also starring Chris O'Dowd, Megan Fox and Edward Burns, Friends With Kids delivers the laughs and the heart from beginning to end!

Review: Friends With Kids is one of those slice of life, we're getting older and our generation wants to still have wine and live in the city movies, whilst everyone around us breeds and gets married.  This film showcases two holdouts that soon decide to have a kid together.  The stellar cast makes this one more desirable than the plot.  The film isn't so much a comedy, but a dramedy.  It was very sweet and charming and will be a nice watch for couples getting comfy on the sofa!

Review: One thing I learned from watching this documentary..Jiro loves sushi.  My god, does he.  Jiro has spent his entire life perfecting and mastering his craft and like a kung fu wizard, he is a master of sushi.  His restaurant is quaint and humble, but make no mistake about it, there you will have the experience of a lifetime.  It was interesting to hear about Jiro's life and journey and how sushi was so important to him that his family even came second!  This is an interesting slice of life special that definately entertains.

Synopsis: Midnight Son is the story of Jacob, a young man confined to a life of isolation, due to a rare skin disorder that prevents him from being exposed to sunlight. His world opens up when he meets Mary, a local bartender, and falls in love. Tragically, Jacob’s actions become increasingly bizarre as he struggles to cope with the effects of his worsening condition. Forced by the disease to drink human blood for sustenance, he must control his increasingly violent tendencies as local law enforcement narrow their focus on him as a suspect in a series of grisly murders.

Review: We've seen take after take on various movie monsters...werewolves, zombies and vampires...but this new indie film take is a brave new world.  This is a fantastic feature with great tone and lovely acting.  This dark, twisted and modern love story is one that is not to be missed!  We highly recommend.
