Review: The Goosebumps is a famous book series that found a huge presence back in the 1990s.   The characteristically spookly stories feature all types of spooks, monsters and karmic consequences.  From this book series spawned a very popular television series.  These DVD releases each feature 3 of the episodes from this series, for a total of 6 episodes.  The episodes are not in order, but rather are random selections from the 3 season, 74 episode series.

I watched these with my 8 and 6 year old kids, and we searched for our favorite episodes, trying to figure out of one of these releases was better than the other.   Honestly, we couldn't make a choice! They're both fantastic releases with entertaining episodes.  They're spooky, but not TOO scary, so these DVDs are both perfect for your thrill seeking little ones!

Halloween is coming up soon, don't miss out on these fun DVDs!

The Matrix Reloaded Blu-Ray Review

The Matrix Reloaded Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In the second chapter of the Matrix trilogy, Neo (Keanu Reeves), Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) and Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) continue to lead the revolt against the Machine Army. In their quest to save the human race from extinction, they gain greater insight into the construct of The Matrix and Neo's pivotal role in the fate of mankind.

Review: The Matrix Reloaded had a lot of expectations to live up to!   The hit sci-fi franchise from the Wachowski brothers managed to not only live up to fan expectations, but far exceed them!  If there was ever a film that was destined to be put into high-definition, it was this one!

The Matrix trilogy was released a few years back in an ultimate blu-ray collection, but now they are finally being released as individual blu-rays!  The Matrix Reloaded was the sequel to the first film and the action was far superior.  The storyline progressed well and the film ends with one helluva cliffhanger, leading into the third and final installment.

The high definition transfer is flawless.  When I say that, I mean FLAWLESS.  This film was absolutely made for high-definition.  I cannot find one complaint and thats saying something, because I'm a huge high-def snob!  I highly recommend this, any fan of the films won't be disappointed!

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season DVD Review

Smallville: The Complete Ninth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: After a meteor shower bursts from the heavens, raining destruction on the unsuspecting citizens of Smallville, years pass, and the healing process leaves the town's inhabitants with scars and secrets. From the ashes of tragedy, a popular yet awkward teen attempts to decipher the meaning of his life and his clouded past. As he struggles with the transition from boyhood to adulthood, Clark finds that his strength and strange abilities set him uncomfortably apart from his peers. Soaring into its ninth season, this modern retelling of the Superman legend and its classic characters continues to blend realism, action and emotional depth to reveal a new interpretation of the enduring mythology. This season, as Metropolis's clock tower tolls our characters' darkest hour, we find Clark Kent (series star TOM WELLING) finally making his first attempts to embrace his calling as a superhero.

Review: I'll come clean right away and tell you that Smallville is one of my favorite shows on television.  Smallville, House and Fringe are my weekly addictions!  Smallville has hit a fantastic stride now with the ninth season.  The show has finally completely come into it's own and become comfortable with the fact that its about superheroes.  This season brings us the Justice Society and the Kandorians!  We have Zod on earth searching for his powers and complete control of humanity.  Not to mention the drama between Clark and Lois, as she is right on the border of discovering his ultimate secret!

The chemistry between Lois and Clark is finally solid and as they date, their trouble only seems to increase.  Meanwhile, Chloe and Oliver have found a casual romance and Checkmate waits in the shadows to strike!  All this while trying to keep Zod at bay and the Kandorians from creating a future apocalypse of death and destruction!

Smallville will be airing it's tenth and final season this year, starting in a few weeks.  You NEED to get caught up, so you know whats going on.  Season nine ends with a huge cliffhanger, so just picking up on ten won't help you!  This is a phenominal show, I cannot recommend it enough.

The special features on the DVD include: "Kneel Before Zod" featurette: An in-depth look at this dynamic criminal from Krypton, his origins in DC's silver age, and his various appearances in more recent film, animation, and live-action television, "Justice for All" featurette: Meet with Smallville's creative team as they bring the Justice Society of America, one of the comic world's most iconic teams of superheroes, to television for the first time, Cast/creator commentaries on episodes Idol and Kandor and Unaired scenes.

Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Supernatural: The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Twenty-six years ago, Sam and Dean Winchester lost their mother to a mysterious and demonic supernatural force. Subsequently, their father raised them to be soldiers. He taught them about the paranormal evil that lives in the dark corners and on the back roads of America ... and he taught them how to kill it. This haunting series follows the Winchester brothers as they crisscross the lonely and mysterious back roads of the country in their '67 Chevy Impala, hunting down every evil supernatural force they encounter along the way. At the end of the fourth season, Sam unwittingly broke the final seal – that held Lucifer captive in Hell. Now, Lucifer is free, the Apocalypse is here and angels prepare for a spectacular final battle. Against a landscape of celestial violence, natural disasters and a rising human death toll, Sam and Dean, with the help of fallen angel Castiel, must find a way to achieve the impossible: Kill the Devil.

Review: In the beginning Supernatural was about just that...the supernatural.  We're talking ghosts and poltergeists.  What has happened as the seasons go on is that it has evolved into a religious thriller.  Whether that was always the intent or not is unclear.  One thing is certain, if you're a religious person, then you'll probably enjoy this show.  If you're not, it will come off as rather hoaky.

The essentials are that the Winchester brothers travel around killing ghosts.  Their mother was killed by evil spirits when they were young and now they've accidentally let the devil out of hell.  Of course, they employ the assistance of a fallen angel to battle the leagues of satan.  The show is very well produced and is rolling into it's sixth season soon, so obviously  they're doing something right!  The tone is good, script is great and the acting is spot on.  Its a great quallity religious show.

The special features on the DVD include: Supernatural: Apocalypse Survival Guides: Bobby's Exclusive Video Collection, Ghostfacers: The Web series, Producer/writer commentary on episode 4, The End, Unaired scene from episode 9, The Real Ghostbusters, Gag reel.

Tommy Blu-Ray Review

Tommy Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: This classic rock opera is brought energetically to life by an outstanding cast including many stars of the rock music industry. Told through the remarkable music of The Who, this is the story of Tommy, who, when just a boy of six, witnessed the murder of his father by his mother (Ann-Margret) and her lover (Oliver Reed). They command him, “You didn’t hear it, you didn’t see it, and you won’t say anything to anyone…” As a result, the traumatized boy retreats into the shadows of his mind and becomes deaf, dumb, and blind. Growing into manhood, Tommy (Roger Daltrey) is subjected to several bizarre cure attempts by The Acid Queen (Tina Turner), the Preacher (Eric Clapton), and the Specialist (Jack Nicholson). In spite of his handicap, Tommy defeats the Pinball Wizard (Elton John) and becomes the champ, attaining a devoted following. When he is finally cured, he is hailed by his fans as a “Messiah.”

Review: Tommy is a trippy cult-classic hit!  It has seen a few releases, including superbit, but this is the first time is will be seen on blu-ray.  This is one of those films where you love it or you hate it, there isn't much in between.   The film is based on the music of the WHO and features a great peformance by Elton John.

The only downside to this release is a complete lack of extras.   The blu-ray transfer looks really fantastic, especially considering the age of this film.  At a low price-point, its definately worth the purchase!

Interest Range: Cult Classic, Elton John

Solitary Man Blu-Ray Review

Solitary Man Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Ben (Michael Douglas) once ruled a car-dealership empire vast enough to fuel a glossy Manhattan lifestyle and endow a library at an East Coast university. But by the time he arrives at the college with his girlfriend’s daughter, Allyson (Imogen Poots), who is a prospective student, his world has collapsed around his ears. A business scandal has cost him his income and his marriage to Nancy (Susan Sarandon). His ever-present lust for every passing attractive woman threatens to take what little Ben has left. Even his new relationship with Jordan (Mary-Louise Parker) oscillates with tension. When Ben takes Allyson to tour the school, his motives are more than mixed.

Review: We're used to seeing Michael Douglas as a powerful, yet morally bankrupt man.  He often portrays tyrants and bastards, hopping from one gorgeous woman to the next.  I think he's so good at these roles that many of us question the eithics of the real-life man!   I think his role in 'A Perfect Murder' is my favorite example of these roles.  Solitary Man has elements of these past villains, but with a twist...

What is the twist?  He's downright and absolutely pathetic.  Douglas plays Ben, a man that had it all and lost it.  He's pathetic and sad.  He's a slave to lust and can't help but desire every attractive woman around him, to the point that its about to ruin whats left of his sad little life.  Its refreshing to see Douglas stray a bit from his norm and really deliver for us.  He's a suberb actor and this is a great little film.  Its like a car accident, we all drive by slowly to see what happened and what happens next...you won't be able to turn this one off!

Hatchet Unrated Director's Cut Blu-Ray Review

Hatchet Unrated Director's Cut Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: With a stellar cast including Joel David Moore (Avatar), Mercedes McNab (“Buffy The Vampire Slayer”), Richard Riehle (Office Space), and horror cinema legends Robert “Freddy Krueger” Englund, Tony “Candyman” Todd, with Kane “Jason Voorhees” Hodder as Victor Crowley, HATCHET is a gory throwback to the classic 1980s slasher/creature horror films. HATCHET on Blu-ray™ features an all new 1080p high-definition transfer of the unrated “Director’s Cut” with Dolby TrueHD 5.1 high-resolution audio, all the bonus features from the original DVD release, AND an all-new commentary track with writer/director Green and Victor Crowley himself – Kane Hodder.

HATCHET spins a terrifying tale of tragedy and comeuppance from beyond the grave. Victor Crowley is a hideously deformed boy, living in seclusion with his father (Hodder) in an isolated cabin deep in the Louisiana Bayou. When a Halloween prank initiated by local kids goes terribly awry, Victor is accidentally killed in a vicious twist of irony. Years later, a tourist group visiting New Orleans’ “haunted swamps” stumble upon the remnants of that shocking event, transforming an evening of seemingly innocent fun into a horrific nightmare, from which there may be no escape.

Review: Ok, this movie is hilarious.  I've seen my share of horror movies in my day, after all I grew up in the 1980s.  Hatchet is a great tribute and homage to the slasher genre that was made so popular in my youth.  We got all the Halloweens, Friday the 13ths and Nightmares on Elm Street..now we get Victor Crowley...Hatchet!

The story is one you've heard before...Crowley was a deformed youth that was burned to death..yet somehow he lives!  Of course years later a bunch of tourists stumble onto the remains during a Haunted Swamp tour.  That always happens! This film is as much a spoof as an homage.  The director did a fantastic job of showing the absolutely campyness of these films, while still being sure to make this a secret love letter to a very underrated genre of film.

The blu-ray looks fantastic, the sound is amazing and the special features are bountiful!  This one is a must for any horror fan.

That Evening Sun Blu-Ray Review

That Evening Sun Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Academy Award-nominee and ten-time Emmy-winner Hal Holbrook (Into the Wild) stars with Oscar-winner Ray McKinnon (The Blind Side) and Alice in Wonderland's Mia Wasikowska in this critically acclaimed gem. Fleeing the retirement home where his son abandoned him, Abner Meecham sets out to reclaim his beloved Tennessee farmstead - only to find it's been leased to an old enemy, the volatile Lonzo Choat. After Abner intervenes to protect Choat's daughter from her drunken father's abuse, events spiral toward a startling, violent climax in "...an exceptionally fine, richly atmospheric film." (Joe Leydon, Variety) Dedicated to the memory of the late Dixie Carter

Review: What really stands out to me about That Evening Sun is that its a real-life drama.  That snot to say its a so-called "reality" film, but the emotions and dramatic turns aren't fed to you with a spoon.    When there is a dramatic moment the filmmakers rely on actual human interaction, not ominous music or camera play.  That provides and honest and stripped-down drama that is not only refreshing, but entertaining.

The film looks great in on blu-ray!  The high-definition only adds to the grit and realism of this story.  Hal Holbrook has brought us another acting gem!

Review: The first season of Highlander on blu-ray met with very mixed reviews and a lot of fan resistance.   We here at the Legion enjoyed the first season release, because we realized that such an old show that was filmed overseas can only go so far.  Davis-Panzer listened to the fans and for this new Season 2 release things have really shaped-up!  Even the most serious of Highlander fanboy shouldn't be able to complain!

This blu-ray set looks signifcantly better.  The high-definition transfer is fantastic and the amount of extras is outstanding!  The show pics up in season 2 with the new intro and a better quality running story arc.  This blu-ray set is absolutely essential for any serious Highlander fan.  I can't wait to see what new extras they come up with for the next four season releases!

Harry Brown Blu-Ray Review

Harry Brown Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Set in modern day Britain, Harry Brown follow's one man's journey through a chaotic world where drugs are the currency of the day and guns run the streets. A modest law-abiding citizen, Harry Brown is a retired Marine and a widower who lives alone on a depressed housing estate. His only company is his best friend Leonard (David Bradley). When Leonard is murdered by a gang of thugs, Harry feels compelled to act and is forced to dispense his own brand of justice. As he bids to clean up the run-down estate where he lives, his actions bring him into conflict with the police, led by investigating officer DCI Frampton (Emily Mortimer) and Charlie Creed-Miles.

Review: When I heard that Michael Caine was in a vigilante movie I honestly almost laughed.  I mean, he's an old man, right?  Then I remembered recent films like Gran Torino.   Caine loses his ill wife and his best pal.  He's vulnerable and elderly and all alone in the world.  He obtains a gun from a lowlife criminal and proceeds with a vigilante-style murdering spree!

Harry Brown is suprisingly dark, violent and utterly brilliant!   I cannot recommend this title enough.  Its a fantastic look at a far overlooked and abused part of the population.  Caine is fantastic as ever and this adds a great new dimension to his acting resume!

The special features of the blu-ray are Filmmaker and Cast Commentary, movieIQ(r)+sync and BD-Live connect you to real-time information on the cast, music, trivia and more while watching the movie! and Deleted Scenes

Review: The Pirates of Dark Water was a 21 episode series by Hanna Barbera that ran in the early 1990s from 1991 to 1993.  The Warner Archive is now releasing the complete series on DVD exclusively through their online store!

This toon was a lot of fun.  It featured a band of pirates seeking out the 13 Treasures of Rule, lead by Ren, a young prince.   Its an action-adventure series that was cut short.  There was even an accompanying action figure toyline from Hasbro.

The only downside to the DVD is that it comes with no extra features.  Its a solid release with a complete animated series.  If you enjoyed this cartoon as a kid or if you never got a chance to check it out, now you can!

Review: The Celebrated Women of Color Film Collection Volume 2 includes Beauty Shop, How Stella Got Her Groove Back, Waiting to Exhale and Holiday Heart.  This second volume has three movies that I already enjoy and one that I hadn't yet seen...Holiday Heart.

We love these movie compilations here at the Legion.  Why, do you ask?  There are some that would argue that squeezing so many films into a compilation will degrade the quaility too much.  Well, we're talking drama, romance and comedy here, not action or graphics.  Honestly, you can't see any difference in the sound or picture quality vs. the original single disc DVD releases and this one, we compared.

The quality of the films speak for themselves.  You've likely seen at least a few of the major films in this collection.  This isn't some collection of nothing films that couldn't sell on their own, this is a very special release that includes four big name features that are all fantastic in quality and entertainment.  We highly recommend it!

Marmaduke DVD Review

Synopsis: A SUBURBAN FAMILY MOVES TO A NEW NEIGHBORHOOD WITH THEIR LARGE YET LOVABLE GREAT DANE, WHO HAS A TENDENCY TO WREAK HAVOC IN HIS OWN OBLIVIOUS WAY

Review: I used to read Marmaduke in the sunday paper funnies as a kid.  We don't even get a newspaper anymore, so my kids have NO idea who he is.  When I saw this movie coming out I thought it'd be a good time for the entire family.  I had no idea what to expect in terms of story and acting quality, though.

What you get with Marmaduke is a great kids movie that comes packed with a moral lesson, too.  The father is basically too busy and focused on his work to see that his family needs him and their crazy big new dog Marmaduke helps to show him what is really important in life.

This one is really cute and a fun family watch!

Sons of Anarchy: Season Two Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Hang on for this high-octane thrill ride that goes even deeper into the gritty world of an outlaw biker gang! Reeling from the combined pressure of an ATF crackdown and an unprovoked murder, the Sons face a far more deadly threat from a cold-blooded enemy who will stop at nothing to drive them out of Charming—for good. As Jax and Clay square off over questions of leadership and loyalty, lines are drawn and chaos reigns as the club threatens to destroy itself—from the inside out.

Review: Sons of Anarchy is one of the best shows on television.  FX has really hit it big time with this one.  The show lead, Ron Perlman, makes a great aging biker leader and the turmoil that the gang faces is rather believable, considering their positions in life.  This show can be compared to other great television dramas, like Weeds and Breaking Bad.

Season One of Sons of Anarchy was brutal and tough, but brutal though that was, Season Two way outdoes it!  We see the introduction of the Aryans, Irish and the ATF coming in to all infringe on the Sons!  If you enjoyed the first season, then this one will not disappoint!

The blu-ray of this new season is now available.  The show looks amazing in high-definition.  The extras include The Moral Code of Sons of Anarchy Featurette, Sons of Anarchy Roundtable Featurette and Commentary on select episodes.  I especially enjoyed the commentary, it revealed a lot about what goes into the show.

The Middle: Season 1 DVD Review

The Middle: Season 1 DVD Review

Synopsis: Patricia Heaton stars as Frankie Heck in this warm and witty single-camera comedy about raising a family and lowering your expectations. Frankie Heck is a superhero. Well, no, not an actual superhero - but sometimes it seems to Frankie as though getting her kids out the door for school every morning is a superheroic act. Middle aged, middle class and living in the middle of the country, this harried wife and working mother of three uses her wry wit and sense of humor to try to get her family through each day intact.

Review: The Middle is a new comedy that airs Wednesdays on ABC.  Its sandwiched in with Cougar Town and Modern Family.  The two main characters are from previous comedic hits - Scrubs and Everybody Loves Raymond.

The Middle is a comedy based on a quirky family.  The comedy is fresh and the jokes are actually funny, unlike many sit-coms.  My favorite character is without a doubt the youngest boy that whispers to himself.  Its absolutely hilarious.  The show is almost a slightly less extreme version of Malcolm in the Middle.   Its a great show and definately worth owning.

The DVD bonus features include: Raising a Sitcom Family: Series creators recount the history and development of this unique comedy about small-town life in the Midwest, Sue's Best Shots: Sue's school photos provide the springboard for cast and crew to recall their own school photo experiences, Unaired scenes and a Gag reel

Five Little Monkeys Jumping On the Bed DVD Review

Scholastic: Five Little Monkeys DVD Review

Synopsis: Building upon the popular trend of babies learning to communicate by sign language, Scholastic Storybook Treasures has launched a new American Sign Language DVD series helping to extend sign language learning for children ages 2 to 9.  The newest release, FIVE LITTLE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED…AND MORE GREAT CHILDREN’S STORIES brings beloved children’s books to rich life with voice narration, sign language and catchy musical scores.  Stories include the title tale about everyone’s favorite primates, along with “Little Quack” and Mercer Meyer’s “There’s Something in My Attic”.  The DVD also includes sign language vocabulary, comprehension quizzes, alphabet fingerspelling and read-along.

Studies show that when children learn sign language at an early age they have increased language acquisition and educators often recommend sign language to help children develop fine motor skills.  The new DVD series has been created to enhance sign language learning and increase comprehension skills through vocabulary lessons and an interactive quiz for each story.

From one of the most trusted brands in entertainment and education, this new series was developed by parents Missy Keast and her husband/partner Dave Victorson who are also ASL and education experts.  Keast was born deaf and is known as the “Shakespeare of Sign Language” because of her eloquent storytelling and communications skills.

Review: If you have a little one then most likely you've read Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed!  Its a fantastic little story that is one of many featured on this new DVD set from Scholastic!  Its always a struggle to find quality and safe children's programming.  Scholastic is a trusted name and definately one that we turn to often in our household.

The best thing about this DVD set is the new sign language feature.  Our kids are learning sign language in public school now and this DVD re-enforces a lot of that learning, plus gives deaf children and parents a great opportunity to enjoy.

Ax-Men: The Complete Season Three DVD Review

Ax-Men: The Complete Season Three DVD Review

Synopsis: The Ax is back for another season of heart-stopping excitement as rival logging companies race against time and nature to bring timber to market using skills passed down from their fathers and grandfathers.

As AX MEN enters its third season, it's the dead heat of summer and the stakes are higher than ever. From mountaintop to river's bottom, from the Pacific Northwest to Florida to Louisiana, six crews take on work as unforgiving as the terrain, as fickle as the weather, and as dangerous as any job in history. Time is money on the mountain. These are the proving grounds where four generations of men have battled for green gold and tried to get out alive.
Review: There is a lot of reality television on these days.  It mostly revolves around singing, dating or acting like a complete idiot.  Ax-Men stands out from the pack due to the fact that its a look into actual reality!  Nothing scripted, its all real and gritty.

Ax-Men takes us through the lives of these rival logging companies that are going head to head competing in a generations old battle for market dominance.  The only way to do this?  Cut down the most trees, of course!  This show will make any good environmentalist cringe, but others may enjoy this band of working-class heroes.

Gangland: Season Five DVD Review

Gangland: Season Five DVD Review

Synopsis: They rob kill and terrorize and they've left their violent mark on our nation's history. Delve deep into the rich and often brutal bloodlines of gangs across America from New York City to Chicago Houston to Nashville as SEASON FIVE of GANGLAND paints a violently accurate and compelling portrait of gang life in America. Exclusive interviews rarely seen footage and unique access to the lives of gangsters provide solid insight into why gangs exist how they operate their increasingly destructive methods and the alarming rate at which they're spreading to suburban and rural areas.

Review: We love watching the History Channel.  Their programming is 99% fantastic!  Definately better than any other network.  Part of that line-up is the Gangland series.   This DVD set collects season five into a three disc set.  I have a great interest in true crime and documentaries, and this show fuses the two perfectly.

Gangland takes you through the honest and often brutal world of various gangs around the country.  This insiders look into this underground world is absolutely fantastic.   You learn a lot about what is going on outside of the suburbs and what daily life is for others.  The show is in-depth and rough and absolutely fantastic.

Pawn Stars: Season Two DVD Review

Pawn Stars: Season Two DVD Review

Synopsis: The hit HISTORY series returns to the only family-run pawn shop in Las Vegas, where three generations of men carefully assess the value of items brought in by an array of quirky customers in need of fast cash.

Watch in PAWN STARS as the Harrison family attempts to find the gems and bust the fakes, all in hopes of making the biggest profit possible. Grandfather, father and son use their sharp-eyed skills to assess the value of items ranging from the obscure to the historic. There isn't much the Harrison family hasn't seen or heard, making Richard, Rick and Corey experts in rare collectables and negotiating.

Each episode of PAWN STARS features an array of characters attempting to sell, purchase or pawn items that the Harrisons must carefully appraise, and determine if they re real or fake before revealing the often surprising answer to 'What['s it worth?'

PAWN STARS: SEASON TWO contains 32 episodes on 4 DVDs.

Review: We love the History Channel here at the Legion.  One of the reasons is this show....Pawn Stars!  Season Two is on DVD and we couldn't be happier!  There are a slew of "reality" television shows out there, but few like Pawn Stars.  Its like Antiques Roadshow without the bore.  You have a pawn shop full of smart alecs and funny characters that are in the business of buying great items low and selling high.   Its such a blast to see the kinds of things that come in there!  They have this great Vegas-based shop that gets a lot of people bringing things in to pawn or sell, so that they can gamble, so you get some nice variety.  Everything from airplanes to civil war memorabilia to old toys and more.

The other great aspec of the show is the clashing personalities.  You have three generations of a family working there from the old man to the grandson, plus the dopey friend Chumli.  Its great to watch them all play off each other.  This show is overall highly enjoyable.

9th Company Blu-Ray Review

9th Company Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Based on real-life events, 9th COMPANY recounts a year in the shared lives of a group of young soldiers drafted to serve in Afghanistan during the final year of the Soviet conflict. It is a poignant story of the unit s dedication to each other during their valiant defense of Height 3234...a futile battle that ravaged their forgotten company, who fought on, unaware that the war had ended.

Reminiscent of Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket and The Big Red One, 9th COMPANY is credited as being the first real post-Soviet era war film.

The highest grossing film in Russia in 2005 at $27 million, 9th COMPANY also won a NIKA Award for Best Film and marks the feature directorial debut of Fyodor Bondarchuk, son of renowned director Sergei Bondarchuk War and Peace, 1968.

Review: The 9th Company is a war epic focused around the Soviet Afghan War in Afghanistan during the late 1980s.  The film takes us through the lives of the Russian soldiers as they go through intense and brutal training to prepare for war.  Then, its revealed that they were allowed to volunteer to go to fight in the war.  Thats a great practice that all civilized countries should employ!

Next, we get into the battles!  The war scenes are chaotic and violent.  This film really captures the realities of warfare and military life.  It can be compared to films like Full Metal Jacket and even Patton, at times.  There is no glorified combat here, just real and moving film.  The fact that these are Russian troops quickly fades away and we see clearly how connected we all are.

This film was moving and action-packed.  Its the total package and its not to be missed on blu-ray.  High-definition is the ONLY way to watch these battle scenes!

Review: I have mixed feelings about the way that Flash Forward went down.  I compare it to a show like LOST that started out SO strong for a few seasons, but really fell off track in the middle and scrambled to regain itself in the end.  On one hand, I'm sad that Flash Forward only lasted a season.  A great sci-fi drama should go on for many seasons and give me some stability.  On the other hand, its almost better like this.  In a way it ended up being like a mini-series that wrapped itself all up in a nice little package and retained its quality.

Flash Forward was based on a great novel by Robert J. Sawyer.  The plot was thick and the mystery level was high.  Sure, maybe it fizzed out a little too quickly, but to put in this complete series set is a lot of fun.  Its full of extras and great stuff that is sure to entertain.  This is one of those great shows you'll want to own in your DVD library.

$5 A Day Blu-Ray Review

$5 A Day Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Christopher Walken is hilarious as Nat, an eccentric con-artist and deadbeat dad dying to reconnect with his troubled son, Flynn (Alessandro Nivola, The Eye, Laurel Canyon). Diagnosed with a terminal illness, Nat shanghais his reluctant son into driving him cross-country for experimental medical treatment. Low on cash, they pull off increasingly ridiculous and embarrassing schemes along the way to reach their destination spending only $5 a day. Boasting a star-packed cast that includes Sharon Stone, Amanda Peet and Dean Cain, $5 A DAY is an irresistibly fresh and charming comedy about letting go of the past and choosing your own road.

Review: You know, just when I thought Sharon Stone couldn't be relevant anymore, this movie comes along.  I didn't have a lot of faith in $5 a Day going into it, but I was pleasantly surprised by its quality.    The performances by Stone and Christopher Walken were both very respectable and actually broke a few of their own stereotypes.    This is a great drama with a lot of heart.  I know its listed as a comedy, but its more of a light-hearted drama.  There is definately a 'slice of life' message here that you can take away from it.  I greatly enjoyed this one.
