Review: Harry-O is a vintage crime drama that aired between 1974-76 starring David Janssen.  The ABC show ran for two seasons...this DVD release collects the complete first season.   Harry-O is a throwback show that was a bit before my time and I had never caught it on re-runs, as I did so many other 70s action shows.  This one was a lot of fun..it kinda reminded me of a cross between the Rockford files and Starsky and Hutch.  The list of guest stars was great, including Farrah Fawcett and Martin Sheen! 

I definately enjoyed the show and I can't wait to see the second season.  Hopefully, the Warner Archive will release it within the next year.

Review: In celebration of the 60th anniversary of Singin' in the Rain, the WarnerArchive.com will bring you the remaining, unreleased Gene Kelly films from the Warner Bros. vaults.  These films are commonly recognized as being among Gene Kelly’s non-musical films, which is quite a treat.  You get to focus more on his acting ability, which was fantastic.  We love vintage film here at the Legion, so new films that were never brought to home video being available for the first time is exciting...especially one starring such a screen legend. 

Synopsis: Johnny Columbo was just a boy in 1900 New York when a gang of extortionists known as the Black Hand murdered his father. Now Johnny's a grown man eager for vengeance.

Review: Any fan of Gene Kelly and vintage film in general will recognize the title "The Black Hand".  This film is an unreleased to DVD epic that hasn't been seen in decades!  Thanks to the Warner Archive, who brings us a ton of great vintage cinema on DVD, we all get a chance to enjoy a rare non-musical movie from Kelly.  That allows him to show his true acting chops, in our opinion.  Black Hand is an intense and moving film about a boy seeking revenge for his father's murder against a gang around the turn of the century.  The film is thrilling and full of action.  We absolutely loved it. 

This film is "made to order" on www.wbshop.com as part of the Warner Archive series.  These cannot be found in stores!

Review: Only once a generation does a dc comics related show come along that captures every character and the universe at large perfectly...Young Justice is that show.  Everything from the sleek character designs to the phenominal voice acting and excellent writing have made Young Justice a stand-out show that rivals Justice League Unlimited and even Batman: The Animated Series in overall quality.  This new DVD collects the final 14 episodes of season one, which makes it a fantastic buy and a must have for any fan.

Review: We love Heathcliff here at the Legion.  Some might tell you that you need to pick between Heathcliff and Garfield....not true!  We love 'em both.  This cool new online only release from the warner archive features the old 1980-82 Ruby-Spears Heathcliff cartoon, which had Mel Blanc on board as the voice of Heathcliff!    This was a fantastic show back in it's day....its not to be confused with the later DIC Heathcliff cartoon that ran in the mid-80s.  This one was two seasons, the first called Heathcliff and Dingbat..the second was Heathcliff and Marmaduke.  This DVD release is all 13 episodes of the first season, Heathcliff and Dingbat.  This cartoon, and the backup Dingbat cartoons, are highly enjoyable and hold up quite well.   This one is a gem and a MUST for any fan of vintage animation.

Review: When I see new shows I'm often skeptical...and when I see a remake show brought over from another country and "Americanized" I'm rock bottom uninterested.  Thankfully, I gave Wilfred a chance, and the only reason that I did is that Elijah Wood was cast in the lead.  Wilfred is actually played by the same actor that played him overseas in Australia, which was a great idea.  The show, about a man and his imaginary and obscene dog-friend.   The show runs on FX and is wildly hilarious.  Loved every moment of it and I'm really looking forward to season two.  One high point..a supporting role by "My Name is Earl" alum Ethan Suplee as the ultra-aggressive and inappropriate neighbor.

Review: James May is best known by UK audiences as one of the hosts of the wildly popular show Top Gear.  In this six-part UK series May takes us all around the world to learn about the inventions of the past century..all of the things that defined our future.  He covers everything from airplanes and kits to nylon and the hubble.  His trademark humor and great personality really shine through and make this educational show, which could otherwise come off a bit dry to most, a ton of fun.  This one would be great for classrooms or homeschoolers...or just that kid that you can't get to learn!

After several uneventful ghost hunts, they came upon the house known as 1666. They have been missing ever since. One year later, their film was found miles away from their last known location. Their footage was compiled and made into a movie: KNOCK KNOCK 2.

Review:  The first Knock Knock was a horror slasher film.  The sequel, as horror sequels back in the 1980s often did, takes the franchise in a completely different direction.  This time its a found footage film with a group of people that get trapped into a house as the horror ensues.  This one is very creepy and a great edition to the found footage horror film genre.

Synopsis: When world wrestling champion RIP THOMAS (Hulk Hogan) refuses to join a competing network, an evil executive creates a new program, "The Battle of the Tough Guys," where rules don't exist and men engage in an all-out brawl for money. After a murdering ex-convict by the name of ZEUS comes out on top as the toughest man, an ultimate title match with RIP is the TV network's best chance for big ratings. But when Rip refuses the challenge and his brother is roughed-up as a consequence, the world champion has no choice but to teach Zeus a lesson in a final No Holds Barred fight to the finish.

Review: No Holds Barred.  Oh, holy crap!  This was one of the highlights of my childhood.  During the height of Hulkamania and the popularity of the WWF (now re-branded WWE) Hulk Hogan stars as RIP, a Hulk Hogan-esque wrestler that has to go up against an evil television network and ultimately the biggest threat of his life...Zeus!

This is the first time that this epic wrestling crossover film has been released on DVD..and its about time!  Whether we see Rip busting through a roof to deal with network goons or we enjoy the awful 80s music running throughout the film, this one is a nostalgia-fest!  It reminds me of a time when I was a far more innocent viewer and films like this..even heroes like these, really appealed to me in a serious way.  This movie is an absolute MUST have for any child of the 1980s and of course any wrestling fan.  And who isn't a wrestling fan, right?

Synopsis: Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo are back in the classic final season that pits turtles from the past and present against the evil Lord Dregg and his minions. Determined to enslave mankind, Dregg will stop at nothing to win - causing a piece of the sun to crash into Earth, opening a giant portal to pull the planet into Dimension X, and even draining the life energy from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles! Carter soon realizes that the only way to defeat Dregg, Krang and Shredder is to bring the Turtles' past selves to the present - double the Turtle power! But will they make it in time before Dregg's invasion is complete? Featuring time-warping serious Turtle muscle, season 10 is a totally tubular finale!

Review: This DVD release represents that final tenth season of the hottest show of the 1990s, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!  All eight episodes are included here, including the epic finale in Krang's android body against Lord Dregg!  The final seasons of the show featured an altered theme song that had the same lyrics, but sang at a different pace and all new animation mixed with shots from the first live-action film.  The quality of the video on this season 10 set is phenominal!  I have absolutely no sound or video complaints on this one.

The special features aren't rich on this DVD release, as far as documentary or interviews go, but guess what TMNT fans?  They do include two bonus episodes...the episodes that were infamously missing from the season 5 DVD release!  You now get "Once Upon a Time Machine" and "Planet of the Turtleoids".  There are a few interviews with artists that worked on the show, which are semi-informative and kinda dull at times, but better than nothing!

This DVD release is a MUST have for any TMNT fan!

Interest Range: Vintage Animation, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Review: The Inbetweeners was one of the best british shows out there.  The show focuses on this group of idiot 20-somethings that are stalled out in starting their lives and their hijinks as they relate to each other and others.  The show is funny..I mean every episode funny.  If you dig british humor at all, this one is for you.  Skip MTVs new crap re-make that has NOTHING to do with the original concept and do yourself a favor and pick-up this show.  Its absolutely fabulous (more british humor for you).

Review:  The Weight of the Nation is a controvertial documentary that aired on HBO this year regarding weightloss.   The documentary itself is very well produced and most of the experts are dead-on...there are a few points that have found some intense debate online, but we'll leave you to explore this on your own.  The overall message on this one is strong and its a rather informative and extensive look at our biggest public health crisis.

Synopsis: Cole Younger & The Black Train traces Cole Younger's experiences with the Black Train - first as a teenager, then into adult life as he partners with Jesse James to create the most notorious outlaw band of the old West, the James-Younger gang.

Review: This one is a sort of biopic about Cole Younger, one half of the infamous James-Younger gang and how he got tracked down by the Pinkerton agency as a younger man.   Michael Madsen does a great job in this slightly campy, but fun western.

Synopsis: Bitten by a vampire while pregnant, Eric Brooks' mother gave birth to a baby boy a child born with all the strengths of a vampire and only one of its weaknesses. Struggling with a blood thirst, but imbued with supernatural powers, that child has become the vampire hunter know as Blade.

Review: There are four Marvel Comics based anime titles being released...X-Men, Iron Man, Wolverine and this one...Blade.   You may remember the Blade film trilogy and even the live-action TV show.  This continuation of the series consists of twelve episodes that follow Blade chasing Deacon Frost to Japan and encountering the local vampires that plague the area.  This one was a great watch..lots of action and fun for any comic book and anime fan.

Synopsis: Josh Hutcherson, Dane Cook and Spencer Locke star in Detention, a hipster, teen horror-comedy where the local students of Grizzly Lake must survive their final year of high school. Standing in their way is Cinderhella, a slasher-movie killer who has seemingly come to life and is preying on the school's student body. As the clock ticks and the bodies pile up, the likely suspects are embroiled in a race against time to stop Cinderhella and ultimately save the word... if only they can get out of detention.

Review:  This movie...its a horror comedy.  If you are familiar with that genre, then you should enjoy this one.  Furthermore, you need to be a Dane Cook fan, which is a select grouping of people, lol.  This one features horror killer Cinderhella and a group of teens fighting for their lives.  Is this the best movie ever?  Nah, but it sure was a fun watch.

Synopsis: When a worldwide viral outbreak leads to a plague of zombies scouring the earth for the living, two survivors flee the chaos of America to a remote island, hoping for a chance to start a new life. What they find is unrelenting horror. Beyond the hordes of the flesh-hungry undead, the other people already on the island force the pair into a fight-or-die battle amongst themselves. Armed only with crude weapons, they must descend to savagery and cutthroat tactics just to make it through each day. Packed with cutting-edge action and outrageous gore, Dead Season is a riveting new spin on the zombie genre!

Review: The zombie genre has gone wild in recent years.  Far from Romero's classic tales, the mainstream has picked upon this horror phenom and run with it.  Dead Season goes back to the Romero-esque roots and doesn't go overboard on budget making a hollywood film..they make a zombie film.  The characters and dialogue are engaging and the situations that examine the idiocies in human nature are spot-on. Ths slice of life tale within a zombie apocalypse is just what Romero would do and its a wonderful fix for those into the genre..like this guy.  Thumbs up!

Synopsis: Amanda Tapping returns as Dr. Helen Magnus in the amazing fourth season of the hit Syfy series, promising bigger myths and greater surprises than ever before.

Review: This blu-ray release is the fourth season of the Syfy hit Sanctuary.   Sci-Fi fans rejoice when we get a show with consistant quality like this.  The Fourth season, though not loved by all fans, took risks and I feel they paid off.  The outstanding episodes include Tempus and Icebreaker.  Low points in this season...the what seems to now be essential musical episode.  I was NOT into that whatsoever.  Other than that, this one was a complete win and a must-have for any fan.

Review: What does one say about Ice Road Truckers?  Much like the show Dirty Jobs, IRT has shown us that some people live on the edge on a daily basis.  I definately do not envy these guys and gals as they truck across dangerous terrains to deliver their loads.   This season, season two, focuses on their trek through the Andes.  Oh my god its dangerous and on edge the entire time.  A great watch.

Review: Dan Vs. is a great animated show that features its main characters, Dan, versus just about everything that makes him angry.  He's generally pissed-off and after everyone, but wait...this show is funny AND there is nothing vile or obscene.  There is no cursing and disgusting behavior....its not South Park or Family Guy....yet its still funny.  You can watch this one with your older kids (10 and up) without any issues.  Win!

Synopsis: During the First World War, two French soldiers are captured and imprisoned in a German POW camp. Several escape attempts follow until they are sent to a seemingly impenetrable fortress which seems impossible to escape from.

Review: This blu-ray release is of the classic 1937 Jean Renoir french film.  The film, based on the book "The Great Illusion", which highlights the futility of war.  This is a fantastic transfer to blu-ray...the video quality is wonderful, especially for such an old noir film.   We recommend this one for anyone interested in vintage film and movies with a message.  The message in this one is timeless.

Interest Range: Vintage, Drama

Synopsis: This series pays homage to Frank Miller's legendary Wolverine graphic novel from the 1980's. The series begins when Mariko, the love of Logan's life, is forced back to Japan by her crime-lord father, Shingen. Logan vows to get her back at any cost. He is plunged into a chaotic world of corruption and violence, forcing him to team up with young assassin, Yukio, to battle their way through the Japanese criminal underworld.

Review: This DVD is one in a series of four different Marvel properties being brought to anime.  This aired on the G4 network originally.  The series focuses on Logan's travels to Japan and his lover Mariko, as seen in the legendary original Wolverine mini-series back in the early 1980s by Frank Miller.   If you enjoy anime, then you will love these episodes.  Any die-hard X-Men and Wolverine fan will enjoy hearing Steve Blum reprising his role as Wolverine...that really helps tie this series in.

Review: Transformers: Prime is the latest incarnation of one of the most popular franchises from the 1980s.  This DVD from Shout Factory collects seven episodes of the series, which airs on the HUB network into a film.  The episodes on the disc include:

Four of these episodes were released on the season one set, but three have yet to see release and seeing them all put together in this way makes for a fantastic movie experience. The show is very well-done and a joy for any Transformers fan. This is no single disc release, this is a well put together compilation for ultimate fans.

Review: I still remember when the Undertaker debuted in the then WWF when I was a kid, back in 1990.  In an era of brightly colored superhero types, the Undertaker immediately stood out as a dark force in wrestling.   His very presence was shocking and dark and was a fantastic foreshadowing to what direction wrestling would take with the WWE in the late 1990s and beyond.  Wrestlemania after Wrestlemania he has take down his opponants.  The streak, as its referred, is legend in wrestling and continues today.

This fantastic DVD set provides you will all 20 of his Wrestlemania wins and an in-depth documentary.  The documentary, at over 40 minutes long, has tons of footage, commentary and interviews with other top wrestlers.  Its a great watch and was my favorite part of this DVD set.

Whether its the classic "deadman" or the "american badass", he never fails to come through with a performance that gives 120% for the fans.  This documentary is a must-have for any serious wrestling fan.

Synopsis: Armando Alvarez (Will Ferrell) has lived and worked on his father's ranch in Mexico his entire life. As the ranch faces financial strains, Armando's younger brother Raul (Diego Luna) shows up with his new fianc‚e, Sonia (Genesis Rodriguez) and pledges to settle all his father's debts. It seems that Raul's success as an international businessman means the ranch's troubles are over, but when Armando falls for Sonia, and Raul's business dealings turn out to be less than legit, the Alvarez family finds themselves in a full-out war with Mexico's most feared drug lord, the mighty Onza (Gael Garc¡a Bernal).

Review: Will Ferrell is at it again with his signature comedic wit. This deadpan spoof of the telenovella is a fantastic addition to Ferrell's body of work.  The film is absolutely hilarious, often in subtitles and always dry and uncomfortable.   Casa De Mi Padre successfully accomplishes what films like Nacho Libre missed...a deadpan and serious, yet absolutely hilarious film.
