The Factory DVD Review


Synopsis: Detective Mike Fletcher, a rugged and obsessive police officer, and his partner Kelsey Walker, are on the trail of a serial killer who prowls the streets targeting young streetwalkers. When his teenage daughter disappears, Fletcher discovers that the killer has kidnapped her after mistaking her for a prostitute. Fletcher's obsession goes into overdrive when he drops all professional restraint to get the killer and save his daughter.

Review: The first thing that struck me about the Factory was the fantastic cast.  I'm a huge Cusack fan and I am a regular Dexter viewer, so Jennifer Carpenter is a welcome addition!  Also, Cusack's daughter in the film, the subject of the mystery, is the alternative girl from the Perks of Being A Wallflower, so that was cool.  The Factory begins just as you think it should..dark..a little gritty.  The film lets you know right away that it's inspired by actual events, which of course brings a tone of ominance to the movie.  The Factory begins with murder and introduces us to a long standing case of prostitues being killed during the winter months.   The atmosphere of the film is kept blue, dark, cold and frigid..it does a great job of creating an environment of desolation and emptiness through the weather.  Cusack does a great job as an obsessed cop whose own daughter gets tangled up in his long term investigation.   This one is a great suspense-ride that ends with a HUGE twist.  This one is not to be missed.

Review: I am a huge fan of animation, have been my whole life.  I've seen ads for Adventure Time on Cartoon Network, but I never really felt it would be my cup of tea.  I decided to give it the ol' college try when we got this DVD to review, but I was skeptical.  I left the first episode stunned..the second I was unsure if this was the dumbest or most brilliant thing I'd ever seen and by the third I was convinced...the most brilliant.   This show is hilarious, bizarre and so avante garde its not even funny.  I cannot recommend it enough for kids and adults alike.

Review: In the early to mid 1990s Saban created a new craze amongst kids with the Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers.  In order to ride this craze a bit, DIC imported a fun show that was an Ultraman spinoff titled Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad!  This show, at least in my midwest market, never made it to good airing and showed at like 5 or 6 AM before school.  The show was perfect fun, however, and well within the quality genre of MMPR.  This first volume gives us a whopping 28 episodes from the show, which is about half of the complete series.  The price point is great at only around $12.  This one is a win!

Review: We've seen our share of coming of age films here at the Legion, but Perks of Being A Wallflower takes a nice spin on the genre.  This one has a great cast, rounded out by Harry Potter alum Emma Watson as a bunch of seniors that befriend a freshman and help him to discover his confidence, personality and sexuality.  This one is a great watch that definately touches on your emotions.

Review: Ok, firstly my three year old is obsessed with trains, and you know what that means don't you?  Thats right, Thomas.  The track..the train table..all the trains..and of course, the cartoon.  This DVD comes with a train.  Ok, are you serious?  My son FLIPPED out over this.  What a great combination and incentive.  He loved the cartoon, which was full of light hearted fun and some great lessons, as always.  Definately a win.  This one would be perfect for an Easter basket!

  Review: If you have kids or if you grew up in the 1990s or beyond, then you know all about everyone's favorite purple dinosaur, Barney, and his friends.  I have spent the better part of the last decade watching this show with all three of my children and I have to say that there is little that brings a preschooler as much joy as that crazy dinosaur!  This great new DVD set features a 3-pack of fantastic Barney films for you to enjoy with your little ones.  This one would also make a phenominal gift.

Review: The Ninja Turtles are back with an all new, and welcome, breath of life!  Ever since Nick bought the full rights to the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles franchise fans were waiting anxiously to see what they would do with it.  I must say, they have exceeded my expectations.   This stylized Nick TMNT CGI cartoon is full of great story, character deveopment, action and of course humor!  This first DVD collects the first six episodes from season one, which will give you great characters like Baxter Stockman and the hilarious Metalhead.  There is a moment where the Kraang takes over Metalhead that is just to die for.  This show is hilarious and so much fun its ridiculous.  We definately recommend!

The special features include: 6 “Making Of” Animatics, Theme Song: Karaoke Music Video and Dolby Digital English 5.1 Surround.  The DVD also includes a great TMNT poster (see pic below).

Guppies.  Bubble Guppies! ...and that is the soundtrack to my life since my three year old discovered this Nick Jr. show.  He is absolutely in love with the Guppies.  He watches the show ALL the time..he has the toys..he snuggles with a Bubble Puppy at bedtime..he's all in.   This DVD showcases the Guppies taking on various jobs.

This DVD is  a great collection of six episodes that will delight your little one!  The Guppies are colorful, fun and full of good times.  This safe and fun programming is a win for any parent.  We HIGHLY recommend it!

Review: I can remember when Monsters Inc. came out in theaters...it was a year before my first child was born.  I had enjoyed Pixar films in the past..Toy Story 1 and 2, A Bug's Life..etc, but I wasn't prepared for not only the amazing graphic quality and the story of Monsters Inc.  This is without a doubt one of the best Pixar efforst and we cannot wait for the new Monsters University film this summer!  In honor of this film, we finally get a 3D Blu-ray release.  This great pack includes the 3D and 2D blu-ray, which is great for those that may not yet have a 3D player and TV, but want to make the investment towards the future of their film library.  Let me tell you, Monsters Inc. looks beyond awesome in 3D!  There's no ghosting whatsoever, everything is so fluid and really pops on the screen.  It makes for the best possible viewing experience!  This is the perfect film to share with your family!  We highly recommend!

Review: I remember all the hype over this extremely oscar nominated film back around the turn of the millenium!  In fact, I was going to see it, because I love Russell Crowe, but I just never got around to it.  Now, the film is coming to blu-ray for the first time and I finally get the opportunity to check it out..and in high-def no less.  This film is a fantastic dramatic feature about a whislteblower in the tobacco industry..an industry that since this film came out has been exposed and exposed again in the mainstream, as smoking declines and regulations on public smoking have tightened.  The movie has an amazing cast and its very well acted.  I found it to be suspenseful and full of great plot.  Very enjoyable film indeed, and I recommend it to all.  The movie looks great in high-definition!

Synopsis: Celeste (Rashida Jones) and Jesse (Andy Samberg) are high school sweethearts who married young and are now at a crossroads at the age of thirty. While Celeste is a success in business, Jesse is unemployed and adrift. Celeste thinks that if they divorce now they could still remain friends. Jesse passively accepts the decision even though he is still in love with her. As reality sets in, Celeste slowly and painfully realizes she has been cavalier about their relationship, but her timing with Jesse is less than fortuitous.

Review: My review of this one is mixed.  Firstly, I want to say great casting.  Rashida is fantastic and Andy plays the perfect 30 year old loaf.  Its a great statement on marriage and relationships in our time.  The film explores themes of regret, impulse and immaturity..and perhaps ever overmaturity at times.  I can definately recommend this film..its a great drama, but it just kinda bummed me out, lol.  Regardless, its a wonderful watch.

Review: I've been a big fan of Clifford's books since I was a kid and as a parent its such a joy to be able to share these great characters with my own kids both through books and the great PBS cartoon!    This DVD gives kids seven fun episodes with a celebration theme.  These are so great for kids, because they're safe, fun and educational all in one!  Its a parent's dream.  This DVD is a no-brainer and a must-have!

Review: It's time for Animaniacs!  And they're zany to the max!  It doesn't feel like all that long ago that I was rushing home from school to watch the latest episode of the Animaniacs.  Everyone from Yakko, Wakko and Dot to Pinky and the Brain and Buttons and Mindy..its all so fantastic.  Without a doubt one of the funniest and coolest shows of the 1990s is finally being finished up on DVD with Volume 4!  This volume contains the remaining episodes of season three, along with seasons four and five.  One notable difference here is a small part of the intro change from when the show moved to Kids WB!  They took the Bill Clinton bit out of the intro.  This show never lost quality and continues to be enjoyable for my own kids.  I cannot recommend this one enough to fans of the show and parents today, alike.

Review: Ok, the obvious first point here is the cast.  The dreamy, dreamy cast!  We're talking Walken, Phillip Seymour-Hoffman..Catherine Keener..I mean c'mon.  This film was destined for greatness.   You don't have to love classical music to enjoy this film, but it certainly helps!   This one is about the inner-workings, relationships and life dramas of a small quartet.  There's jealousy, infidelity and resentment.  This one is full of an amazing cast that skillfully bring you a fantastic story.  We highly recommend it.

Review: I wasn't too sure how I'd feel about Kill For Me going into it.  The film looked kinda generic, but honestly it was a great watch.  The two actors, Katie Cassidy and Tracy Spiridakos, have a great chemistry together and I already enjoy Cassidy from watching her on CW's Arrow show.  This film is a great mixture of drama, relationships and action.  The film starts a little slow, but as things go it definately picks up and is well worth the watch.  This one was rather low budget, but it feels like a good quality, well-written and well acted film.  We highly recommend.

Review: I was a huge fan of wrestling as a kid.  My viewing dropped off in the early 1990s and picked up again in the later 1990s during the WCW NwO era and the Monday night wars with WWE.  This great DVD is the second volume of highlights from the legendary Monday Nitro!  We get all the superstars from Goldberg and Hollywood Hogan to the Wolfpac, Kevin Nash and even Billy Kidman!  The DVD is hosted by Diamond Dallas Page, who is honestly kind of annoying, but I can get past those bits pretty easily and enjoy the action!  We get to see some of the old conflicts, story developments and of course tons of matches.  I remember them all, and they're still so fun to see.  This is a great DVD for any WCW fan!

Review: I don't usually pick up quirky kid movies, but this new film, by Inception Media Group, intrigued me.  I was a HUGE sucker for anything ghost and monster related as a kidd.  Everything from Ghostbusters to Monster Squad, and this film kinda looked like it had a similar feel.  I might equate it in tone more to something like Casper, but this was a really enjoyable film.  I sat down with my 8 and 10 year olds and we watched this one together.  They definately dug it and gave their seal of approval.  This one is kid tested, father approved!

He was born, he went to Cambridge and met John Cleese, he smoked a pipe, he became a doctor, he became a Python, he decided we was gay (well, 70/30, according to a survey he did on himself), he got drunk a lot, he stopped being drunk, he made some films, he had some sex (actually, a lot), and moved to Los Angeles. Finally, he was whisked up to space by aliens (although that might have been in a film). 

Although Chapman selfishly dropped dead in 1989, he had taken the trouble to record himself reading his book, A Liar's Autobiography - and those recordings have now ingeniously been used to provide Chapman's voice for the animated feature of the same name. Fellow Pythons John Cleese, Terry Jones, Michael Palin, and Terry Gilliam also turn up, playing themselves and other characters, along with a few surprise guests. 

Not a documentary, not a Monty Python film, A Liar's Autobiography is Chapman's own take on his bizarre life and his search for self-knowledge. Incredible, yes. Surreal, certainly. True? Who knows?

Review: Oh, dear god...why are you even reading this review?  Have you not SEEN Monty Python?  This animated feature is taken from the last known audio recordings by the genius that was Graham Chapman (Yellowbeard).  They made his audio book into a brilliant animated feature that is not only insightful and fun, but perhaps one of the most hilarious things I've seen in ages.  You MUST own this.  Now!

 Review: I have to preface this review by saying that I collect animation.  I L O V E cartoons, especially those from the 1980's and 90s!  One of the best companies for releasing obscure and affordable complete series shows in the past few years is Mill Creek.  This time Mill Creek is giving us an awesome 90s gem....Street Sharks!  This complete series retails for around $12 or so!  Thats it!  This show is hilarious, fun and absolutely phenominal to have on DVD.  You can't beat the price and the video/audio is overall great quality.

Synopsis: Former collegiate wrestler Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 42-year-old, apathetic high school teacher. When budget cutbacks threaten to cancel some of the school's programs and lay off its music teacher (Henry Winkler), Scott creates a scheme to raise money by moonlighting as a mixed martial arts fighter. Everyone thinks Scott is crazy - most of all the school nurse, Bella (Salma Hayek). In his quest, Scott gains something he never expected as he inspires his students and becomes a sensation that rallies the entire school.

Review: I'm going to confess up front, I love Kevin James.  The dude is hilarious.  I've loved pretty much everything he's been in (yeah, even Paul Blart).   Its no surprise to me then that I enjoyed Here Comes the Boom.  It is a surprise that I enjoyed the ENTIRE film, not just James' role.  The supporting cast in this one is outstanding with talents you may already know like Henry Winkler and Selma Hayek...and some you may not be instantly familiar with like Bas Rutten, who plays a retired MMA fighter from Holland that trains James.  This film has a somewhat predictable premise...bad teacher..music program in trouble, teacher shows heart of gold and comes through to earn money needed at all costs.  The film may not be anything groundbreaking or new, but the ride sure is fun.  This one is a great watch, we highly recommend.

Review: Nothing beats a Disney classic and there is little as classic or beloved as Peter Pan!  The original Disney take on the classic James M. Barrie story is finally on high-definition blu-ray.  We have found that this version is our favorite, because not only do we get the DVD and Blu-Ray, but we also get a fantastic storybook app to accompany.  We just recently got an iPad and the app is a wonderful addition.  Our three year old adores Peter Pan thanks to the Disney Jr. show "Jake and the Neverland Pirates", so this film was a natural watch for him and he LOVES it.  My older two (10 and 8) loved it, as well.  The movie looks astounding in high-def..there is just no other way to watch animation!  This one is a must-have!

Review: Storage Wars is a reality show that airs on A&E Network.  Its the show that started the craze of storage locker purchasing shows...oh and a huge surge in real life storage locker purchasing.  The characters on this show are fun, we love watching them all argue and fight and the items they "find" in the lockers are fun to learn about.  This show is always a good time, especially if you love learning about odd antiques and collectibles.

Review: The sessions immediately got my attention thanks to cast member Helen Hunt.  I've enjoyed Hunt's work over the years and its honestly few and far between these days.  This movie has a premise that could easily be interpreted as provocative, but it was handled so tastefully and with such real world dignity.   The base of the film is a man's very justified journey to lose his virginity at age 38.   I was quite surprised and pleased with this film and definately recommend it!

Review: A Perfect Ending is a phenominal and emotional film.  The movie centers around two women from VERY different walks of life that find a passion and a heat between them.   I had heard about this film for some time, so I was elated when it finally came to DVD.  The journey of these two women and eventual lovers is touching in a way that I haven't experienced in a film in a very long time.  The acting is top notch and the character development is fantastic.  We highly recommend it!
