Review: It's the one with the high-def!  FRIENDS is easily one of the funniest shows, if not the funniest, of all time.  Thats right, I said it.  Seinfeld has nothing on FRIENDS, sorry!   My wife and I have been religiously watching not only the show through its end back in 2003, but onward with our DVDs on an almost daily basis.  We can't get enough.  FRIENDS lands on blu-ray today...finally!  This new release is a beautiful boxed set with a lenticular cover and magnetic latch that reveals a nice episode guide booklet and the blu-ray discs inside.  You may need the booklet to locate that episode you want to watch, as the discs are no longer organized by seasons.  The high definition transfer looks fantastic in most of the episodes.  It should be noted that this set contains the syndicated version of the episodes, which are not the extended episodes that can be found on the DVD sets.  We're still pulling for a reunion show, until then we continue to relive the past with great sets like this and with blu-ray, its nearly impossible to scratch, so these will live on in your personal library for ages to come!  We highly recommend this set for you and it'd make a killer Xmas gift!  How YOU doin'?

Painted Skin: The Resurrection Blu-Ray Review

Review: Painted Skin has the appearance, by the cover, of a typical Chinese martial arts action-fantasy film, but nothing could be further from the truth.  This film is atypical from start to finish, and we mean that in the best possible way.  The film focuses on ancient lore and intertwines the demon spirit and human world to carefully weave tales of woe, romance and fate.  The film is beautifully executed and looks fantastic in high-definition.

Vamps Blu-Ray Review

Review: In an era where garbage like Twilight is redefining vampires, Vamps comes out as a classic and comedic take on two socialite vampires looking for love and avoiding vampire hunters!   This is definately the type of comedy 90s Clueless-era fans will enjoy.  Its a little corny, but very cute and definately a fun watch.

The Amazing Spider-Man Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: The Amazing Spider-Man is the story of Peter Parker (Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle Ben (Sheen) and Aunt May (Field). Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy (Stone), and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance - leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors (Ifans), his father's former partner. As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Review: We're huge fans of comic book movies here at the Legion.  We're old school fans, before the mainstream craze of the last decade with franchises like Batman and the X-Men.  That being said, I'm also very hyper-critical of superhero films.  I wasn't a huge fan of the last Spiderman trilogy, as Toby McGuire isn't terribly likeable for me personally and I wasn't a huge fan of the villain design for Green Goblin.  That being said, I was VERY open to a reboot and this new cast really does it for me.  Firstly, Peter Parker appears more his age, as does the rest of the cast.  I enjoyed the flow, the tone and basically everything about this movie.  Again, the villain design is hoaky, but I got past it, because Rhys Ifans is such a cool actor.  This is a great new start for the friendly neighborhood webslinger and I can't wait for the sequel!

Review: I remember when this book first debuted and I reviewed it on my book review website.  It was the beginning of a new era of mixed fiction that revises actual historical facts with fantasy and sci-fi elements.   Ok, I know that on the surface this film sounds just silly, right?  Well, wrong.  The movie does such an amazing job of creating credible costumes, sets and characters that you truly feel like you're watching a historical drama.  Then, with the addition of the vampire, which is in itself a historical monster, the meshing of the two legends ends up being quite epic.  There is a reason that Tim Burton produced this film.  Are YOU going to argue with Tim Burton?  I know we're not.  We definately recommend this one with two firm thumbs up!

Review: Who doesn't love Looney Tunes and of course Bugs Bunny?!  I remember seeing a re-run of this 1975 documentary back in the 80s.   Warner Archive is releasing this one to DVD for the very first time in an online exclusive.  The documentary features vintage file footage from the 1930s and 40s of Termite Terrace, the legendary home of the Looney Tunes cartoon staff on the Warner lot.  The documentary is broken up with several classic Merry Melody cartoons, which is an absolute joy.  I learned a ton about the early days of Looney Tunes and the origins of many of the characters directly from the mouths of the legends, Bob Clampett, Tex Avery..Friz Freleng...they were all still alive back then, so this one is star-studded!  This one is a must have for any serious animation fan.

Review: This film is the latest in the "Love Comes Softly" series of films.  The two-part event is a family-friendly, dramatic and heartwarming film for the holidays.  The movie touches on loss, family, love and hope.  Its nice and rather refreshing to find such a safe and fun film to enjoy during the holiday season...they rarely make 'em like this anymore.

HISTORY in 3D Blu-Ray Review

Review: This great new boxed set from History Channel collects three great specials on 3D blu-ray (see above).   We highly recommend this boxed set as a wonderful Xmas gift!

WWII IN 3D Review: There have been countless documentaries about World World 2 on both DVD and Blu-Ray, but this one is unique, in that it is in blu-ray 3D!  The entire film isn't 3D, of course, but rather portions of it.  The documentary really goes into how the Nazis were at the forefront of photography and filmmaking in their day with a few other general facts and scenes that we've seen before.  Seeing the marches at Nuremberg in 3D was absolutely intimidating and is the closest most of us can get to ever seeing them in real life.  This one is a great watch.

TITANIC 100 YEARS IN 3D Review: We're enthralled with the legend of the Titanic here at the Legion, as are many history buffs.  The History Channel has finally hooked us up with our first 3D look inside the wreckage of the RMS Titanic!  This is where our 3D TV and Blu-Ray player purchases really come in handy!  I've seen a lot of 3D films, but most fall short.  This one...oh my god.  The 3D is amazing!  There is zero ghosting and the 3D technology is used generously.  We get a lot of up-close shots in 3D that bring out the beauty of the ship.  There aren't many wide angle 3D shots, unfortunately, but I was pleased with what I saw.  The familiar story is pieced together by interviews and narrations and really ties together this fantastic 3D Blu-Ray for the viewer.  We recommend this for anyone that is into the Titanic.  Remember, this is a 3D Blu-Ray, but it will also play in 2D format in standard blu-ray players, so you can invest in this one, even if you don't own the 3D technology yet.

HISTORY OF THE WORLD IN TWO HOURS IN 3D Review: The History Channel is renound for their quality documentary and educational programming. The History of the World in Two Hours is quite an undertaking! And its just like it sounds..they literally slam through millions of years of history in a few hours, lightly touching on most subjects and breezing by others. If you're looking for something in-depth, this one isn't for you, however, if you're looking for something well produced, fun and informative..check this one out! Its a blast.  This new release puts this great special onto a high-definition, 3D format!  This one is idea for those that have access to the technology.  The 3D is absolutely fantastic.  The select CGI effects come right out at you and really enchance the whole experience.  This makes the special even better for kids!

Shipping Wars: Season 1 DVD Review

Review: I love Shipping Wars.  What a great show.  I really enjoy watching them fumble and try to transport loads that are either too large, or too difficult in too short of time.   The personalities are great on this show and the charisma is definately there to keep you invested.  This is a fun look at a profession I knew nothing about previously, as well.  I definately recommend this show!

Storage Wars Texas: Season 1 DVD Review

Review:  I love Storage Wars.  I know that a lot of the show, like most reality shows, is staged, but I love the personalities.  Storage Wars Texas..thats another story.  I cannot stand these people..they're gross.   The show is painful..I think its the worst spin-off idea EVER.    The characters are not likable (save for Mo) and the whole thing is just a nightmare.  That being said, I've still watched most of the episodes.  Sigh.  I'm a glutton for things I can't stand too..I've watched so much 19 Kids and Counting..and I can't stand the Duggers either.  Whats wrong with me?  Something is probably wrong with you too, so if you want to try this out, the full first season is available on this DVD!

Review: The Universe is one of the coolest series on History.  This great boxed set 3D Blu-Ray release features a few compilation discs that run about 45 minutes each.  They are as follows:

Disc 3 Mars, Mercury & Venus 3D

This is a great overview of the series and would make a fantastic Xmas gift for the geek on your list!  I know I'm thrilled to add it to our viewing library.  This show is not only great for adults, its a wonderful visual teaching tool for your school-aged children.  The 3D on this set is fantastic and does only work on 3D capable TVs and Blu-Ray players, but also contains regular 2D Blu-Ray versions for you to enjoy, as well!

Sesame Street: Old School 3 DVD Review

Review: There are a lot of things I'm nostalgic about from my childhood.  Growing up in the 80s gave me a lot of great franchises to love.  None so helped to form me as a youth than Sesame Street.  These days, my kids watch the Street a lot more than dad, but this great DVD has all the great bits that I remember as a kid.  This is pre-Elmo, 80s bliss.  I grew up on all of these clips and I can still remember each one.  It was a blast to see them again, and to share them with my own kids.  I cannot recommend this DVD enough!

Review: Disney has been perfecting the Tinker Fairy films over the years and the culmination of this quality improvement shows in Secret of the Wings.  This film is without a doubt one of the funnest, most delightful original features we've seen from Disney in some time.   My daughter and my son both FLIPPED over this one, they found it so enjoyable.   Tink discovers that she may have a winter fairy sister when she braves the dangerous trek to the winter woods.   This film is well animated, well put together and beautifully executed.  Tink and the other fairies are so adorable and charming that we quickly get lost in the story and the characters. 

This combo features the 3D blu-ray, 2D blu-ray, DVD and digital copy of the film!  The movie looks absolutely stunning in 3D and we definately recommend that format, but no matter what level of player you have this film is one you can enjoy.  We do recommend picking up this extended pack, because it plans for your future of viewing.  Even if you don't have a blu-ray or 3D blu-ray player / TV yet  you may someday soon, and then you'll already be all set for many years to come enjoying this Tinker Fairy feature.

Coma (Mini-Series) DVD Review

Lauren Ambrose stars as Dr. Susan Wheeler in this thriller about a medical student who discovers that something sinister is going on in her hospital after routine procedures send more than a few seemingly healthy patients into comas on the operating table.

Review: This film is a re-make of an older film, which is based on the book.   When you get that far down the timeline you're bound to lose some purists and get some creative workings going on.  That is definately the case here.  Coma is a great effort with a phenominal cast that certainly serves its purpose and entertains.  This one was a great watch and a fun re-make.

Happy Endings: The Complete Second Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Forget who gets to keep the ring -- when a couple splits, the real question is, who gets to keep the friends? In this modern comedy, a couple's break-up will complicate all of their friends' lives and make everyone question their choices. For years, perfect couple Dave (Zachary Knighton) and Alex (Elisha Cuthbert) drew their friends in and held them together. Now that they've split, does this group have the stuff to stay together or have to choose sides?

Review: Happy Endings is an ensemble comedy that airs on ABC.  This latecomer had a slow start, but has really picked up both in quality and fanfare.   I'll keep this review simple...this is a FRIENDS-esque show with lots of laughs.  This one is absolutely modern, inappropriate (as indicated perhaps by the title) and hilarious.  It will not disappoint.

Americano Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: After receiving news of his mother's death, Martin (Mathieu Demy) leaves his girlfriend (Chiara Mastroianni) and home in Paris and sets off for Los Angeles to tie up the loose ends of his rocky maternal relationship. Arriving in the United States, Martin is greeted by his mother's best friend Linda (Geraldine Chaplin), who agrees to help him settle his late mother's affairs. As Martin digs deeper into his mother's past, he discovers she had a hidden relationship with a beautiful woman named Lola (Salma Hayek), who he finds at a seedy strip club in Tijuana called the Americano. As Lola recounts her affair with his mother, Martin discovers there may have been more than he ever hoped to know about his mother's sordid past and his own problems with commitment.

Review: Americano is an interesting film.  I wasn't sure what was going to get with this one, but I ended up enjoying a unique film about identity, family and secrets.  The cover will indicate that there is obviously an erotic side to the mysteries involved when a man goes home to settle his late mother's affairs.  This one was definately a great watch and Selma Hayek is beautiful as ever.

Streets of San Francisco: The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Review: The Streets of San Francisco was a great cop show that aired back in the early to mid 1970s.  The five season show never disappointed with great action, crimes and acting.  This DVD set features the fifth and final season of the show, with an offering of 24 great episodes.  The video transfer on this one is fantastic and the sound quality is high.  I really enjoyed being able to watch this one, as it was a bit before my time.

When Calvin finds Ruby (Zoe Kazan), in the flesh, sitting on his couch about a week later, he is completely flabbergasted that his words have turned into a living, breathing person.

Review: Ruby Sparks is the tale of a writer whose creation comes to life.  Of course, even though he dictates things that she can do through his typewriter, she is aunry and gets into mischief...so the question is does he go to that typewrite to fix every little thing or let her grow and be herself?  This is a quirkly little romantic comedy that also throws out some big ideas about society and ourselves.  Its a great watch.
