Tapped DVD Review

Tapped DVD Review

Synopsis: Is access to clean drinking water a basic human right, or a commodity that should be bought and sold like any other article of commerce? Stephanie Soechtig's debut feature is an unflinching examination of the big business of bottled water. From the producers of 'Who Killed the Electric Car' and 'I.O.U.S.A.,' this timely documentary is a behind-the-scenes look into the unregulated and unseen world of an industry that aims to privatize and sell back the one resource that ought never to become a commodity: our water. From the plastic production to the ocean in which so many of these bottles end up, this inspiring documentary trails the path of the bottled water industry and the communities which were the unwitting chips on the table.

Review:  We love documentaries here at the Legion!  There is nothing better than learning something from your entertainment!  Its one of the ways in which television is so useful!  "Tapped" is a new documentary from Stephanie Soechtig and she does a fantastic job in this debut effort!  You get a look at the harsh realities of capitalism, as the so called "bottled-water" industry is revealed to be another blight on our earth.  This, as with most things in our culture, are a carefully crafted illusion meant to fool the consumer and empty our wallets.

This documentary is not only informative and interesting, but its entertaining as well.  Its one that everyone should see!

Multiple Sarcasms Blu-Ray Review

Multiple Sarcasms Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Gabriel Richmond has it all -- a great career, a devoted best friend and a loving wife and daughter -- then why is he so miserable? Witty, probing and emotionally honest, MULTIPLE SARCASMS is an average guy's search for what's missing from his "perfect" life. To figure it all out, Gabe writes an autobiographical stage play to help reveal what matters most and maybe find the love that was right under his nose all along. An incredible all-star cast including Oscar winner* Timothy Hutton (Ordinary People, TV's Leverage), Academy Award-winner** Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite), Dana Delany (TV's Desperate Housewives), Mario Van Peebles (TV's Damages) and Academy Award-nominee Stockard Channing (Six Degrees of Separation) fuels this fresh look of what it takes to find real happiness.*Best Supporting Actor, 1981 **Best Supporting Actress, 1996 Best Actress, 1993

Review: This film is full of fantastic actors.  Timothy Hutton is riding high on his TNT show Leverage, Dana Delany is a Desperate Housewife!  Sorvino and Van Peeples are already well-established quality actors!  The film has everything you should want for success, and success is achieved.  What we found was a nice, light-hearted slice of life romantic comedy.  Its the type of film that you might call a comedic mid-life crisis, as Hutton freaks out and decides he hates his job and wants to be a playwright for a living!  His wife, naturally, isn't too keen on the idea, but his best friend is.  When your best friend is Mira Sorvino, trouble is bound to happen!

This is a very enjoyable and cute film.  A great watch, especially with your honey!  Its available in blu-ray high definition, so why bother with anything else!  We definately recommend.

Triage Blu-Ray Review

Triage Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: After a traumatic, near death experience in Kurdistan, Mark, a battle-scarred war photographer, returns home without his friend and colleague Colin. As Mark struggles to recover, he reveals the shocking truth behind Colin’s disappearance. Starring Colin Farrell, Christopher Lee, Kelly Reilly and Paz Vega.

Review: There are so many films out there that glorify warfare.  They give us epic battle scenes and war-torn heroes.  What they don't show you is the significant psychological impact that war can have on someone.  Colin Farrell plays the role of a photographer that is struggling with his experiences in a warzone in Triage.

The film shows the gradual deterioration of a man that has seen too much.  Triage is decidedly anti-war in the way that it opens our eyes to the emotional aspects of war and definately leaves you feeling.  Triage is best experienced on blu-ray, the high-definition of the war scenes is not to be missed, it really adds to the emotional impact.

The Joneses Blu-Ray Review

The Joneses Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: A picture-perfect family headed by Kate and Steve Jones, with children Jenn & Mick, moves into a suburban neighborhood that is loved by all. In reality, they are a fake family commissioned by a marketing company as a way to introduce new luxury-level products to neighborhoods around the world, using undercover marketing techniques. The title obviously refers to the phrase "keeping up with the Joneses", describing well-known social phenomenon.

Review: I love movies like the Joneses.  Its one of those films that involves things in suberbia not being quite what they truly seem.  The Joneses are a fake family that is placed in the suberbs to drive interest up in products and services.  The stars Duchovny and Moore play the roles perfectly and with great skill.   The Joneses is funny in a dark sort of way and definately keeps your interest as things in their secret world begin to unravel, but truly sort of ravel!  Its like watching the Truman Show in reverse, because they know that everything around them is fake, its everyone else that is in the dark!

The film looks great on blu-ray.  The high-definition picture isn't to be missed anymore, its actually difficult to watch things on DVD!  This one is a blast and definately something we recommend.

Death at a Funeral Blu-Ray Review

Death at a Funeral Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Chris Rock, Luke Wilson, Martin Lawrence, Tracy Morgan, James Marsden, Zoe Saldana, Danny Glover and Peter Dinklage star in a hilarious comedy that puts the “fun” in “funeral”! When the patriarch of a dysfunctional family dies, his funeral turns into family circus. Misplaced bodies, blackmail, indecent exposure and a corpse that won’t stay in the box get the party started, but when old family skeletons start tumbling out of the closet, all Hell breaks loose.

Review: I was very nervous to see this film, because its a remake of one of my favorite films, the previous british dominated Death at a Funeral.  The british version is not only fantastic, but its a cult classic.  To re-make a film like that is a dangerous undertaking.  The cast made me slightly more confident, but it honestly could've gone either way.  Fortunately, it went the good way.

There is only one character retained from the original, and that is the role of the little person, who incidentally is the blackmailing gay ex-lover of their dead father.  Yep, thats pretty much how this movie goes!  Its crazy from beginning to end and absolutely hilarious.  This new re-make really stayed true to the original as much as possible.  The only character that is really different is Tracy Morgan's, but its a welcome change.    Chris Rock actually does a great job of playing it more straight and somber the way he needed to, it was quite impressive to see some range from him.

If you're looking for a home-run comedy, like I always am, Death at a Funeral is for you.  The blu-ray looks fantastic, all the hilarity in high-definition!

Helen DVD Review

Helen DVD Review

Synopsis: On the outside, Helen has it all – a loving family and a successful career – but when her suppressed mental illness resurfaces, the world crumbles around her. Crippled by depression, Helen finds solace through her friendship with Mathilda, a kindred spirit struggling with bipolar disorder. Starring Ashley Judd, Goran Visnjic and Lauren Lee Smith.

Review: This film was especially poignant for me, as I have a loved one with extreme mental illness.  Its honestly hard to watch at times, because it does do such a great job of hitting real mental illness on the head.  The isolation that you feel and the rejection that you can experience from your "loved" ones.    No one understands what you're going through.  Fortunately, in this film Ashley Judd finds another person in her life that is experiencing mental illness through bipolar disorder.  The two strive to find some semblance of life together.

This movie is very emotional and fantastic.  I highly recommend this to everyone, whether you or someone you know is mentally ill or you'd just like to learn more about the realities of it, while watching a great quality drama, this film is for you.

Naked Ambition: An R Rated Look at an X Rated Industry DVD Review

Synopsis: Join celebrity photographer Michael Grecco as he presents a humorous, sometimes introspective, always unexpected, behind-the-scenes look at the AVN Awards, the Oscar's of the porn industry.

Review: What is more interesting than actual adult films is the adult film industry.  Its always interesting to watch the various documentaries that come out on the subject.  This one is unique, because it takes us behind the scenes of the infamous AVN awards, which is like the Oscars for porn.

Michael Grecco gives us a raw and unfiltered look at the people behind the industry.  This documentary is great for fans of adult films or just those that may be fascinated by the culture surrounding the industry.  The film features appearances by several adult actors, including the infamous Ron Jeremy and Jenna Jameson.

I Do And I Don't DVD Review

I Do And I Don't DVD Review

Synopsis: An outrageous comedy about a blissfully unaware couple who must endure church-sanctioned marriage counseling before they can tie the knot. Little do they know that the couple they're assigned to turn out to be beyond dysfunctional and on the edge of divorce. Our couple must learn the hard and hilarious way of what it really takes to be truly, happily married.

Review: At first glance one might assume that this is your everyday romantic comedy, right?  Wrong!   Your first clue was the casting of Jane Lynch in this film.  If you're familiar with Lynch at all you know that you only bring her in for extreme and inappropriate comedy.

The humor in this film about marriage is very risque and at times the tension in the film is uncomfortable.  This is a good thing in our book.  The comedy just comes together and this ends up being a very welcome addition to the 2010 comedy line-up.  I watched this one the same day as I saw 'Date Night' with Steve Carrell and I thought this one was funnier.

Sonic Underground: Legend Has It DVD Review

Sonia daydreams about the party., becomes distracted and is caught while executing part of the mission.

Harmony of Something: A fraction of the Freedom Fighters is wiped out by a swarm of metallic fly-bots. When Manic goes in search of the insects, he is stung with serum, making him loyal to Robotnik. Sonia finds Manic communicating a radio message to Robotnik and realizes her brother is under a spell. It is up to Sonic to terminate the metallic pests.

They are shocked as the submarine melts the icy landscape from under the feet. The Hedgehogs then scurry to locate the lethal submarine before the entire planet is completely submerged under water.

Six is a Crowd: Robotnik's new weapon, Art, is the enforcer of Robotropolis' new eradication policy. Art's objective is to destroy everything in sight, including Sonic, Manic, and Sonia. The giant mechanical beast is seemingly unstoppable until he overhears the musical melodies of the Underground band. The music tames the savage beast and the Hedgehogs take advantage of this sudden change in the robots mood.

Review: Sonic Underground was a cartoon based on the Sega Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise.  It came out around the turn of the millenium as this cool and hip update to Sonic for a new generation.  This was the same time X-Men and Batman were getting cool revamps with X-Men Evolution and Batman Beyond.

We love a good cartoon here at the Legion, but we thought it best to leave the ultimate word up to our kids, ages 7 and 6.  They loved both this and the Adventures of Sonic cartoons.  The more the merrier.  Although I would like to see complete seasons, these releases are a great taste of what the show was.  This DVD release includes 4 episodes of the show.  Overall, a ton of fun and a great quality cartoon!  Move over Sponge Bob...Sonic is back!

Road Hog: Sonic loses his memory when Robotnik uses a hypnotic flower pollen on him, and tells him he's just an "ordinary" guy. With Tails trying to remind him who he is, Sonic joins a Hog Biker gang and hits the open road.

Review: When I was a kid, I LOVED Sonic the Hedgehog.  He took Mario's place as the coolest video game icon when Sega introduced the Genesis!  The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog: Let's Race DVD includes 3 episodes from the The Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon.

Firstly, I need to say that I let my own kids be the ultimate judge of this release.  They LOVED it.  My kids are now way into Sonic and want the video games, etc.  This cartoon had a high production value back when it was produced back in 1993.  Sonic was in a high point and this cartoon helped to carry it even further!  I'd love to see full seasons of this one available eventually!

This is a very affordable release and a great blast from the past, I highly recommend!

Rampage DVD Review

Synopsis: The boredom of small town life is eating Bill Williamson alive. Feeling constrained and claustrophobic in the meaningless drudgery of everyday life and helpless against overwhelming global dissolution, Bill begins a descent into madness. His shockingly violent plan will shake the very foundations of society by painting the streets red with blood.

Review: When I went into this film I figured I was going to get a cheesy ultra-violent flick.   You know the type, we've seen it a million times.  What I actually got was something a lot closer to the dramatic storytelling of 'Falling Down', which was a welcome surprise.

I don't want to mislead you about this film, it does include a high level of violence and even some scenes that I dare say may make you question your limitations in movie violence, but its all for a purpose.  The violence truly does accent the storyline.  Its a great tale about a man pushed to his very limits and the point at which he breaks.

The DVD is great, it includes some cool camera-work and some nice scenes that make you feel almost like you're in the middle of the action.  I highly recommend this one.

When You're Strange: A Film About the Doors DVD Review

When You're Strange: A Film About the Doors DVD Review

Synopsis: When You re Strange, written and directed by the award-winning Tom DiCillo, is the first feature documentary released on The Doors. Graced by the narration of Johnny Depp, it carries the audience through the journeys of vocalist Jim Morrison, keyboardist Ray Manzarek, guitarist Robby Krieger, and drummer John Densmore. This 90-minute presentation features never-before-seen rare archival film, pulled from their inception in 1966 to Morrison s passing in 1971. These snapshot scenes of the band s history is as much an intimate experience, as it is revealing. After being featured at the Sundance, Berlin, Deauville, and San Sebastian Film Festivals, music fans who didn t catch this in theaters can now relish in this extraordinary documentary. It celebrates the collaborative power of this illustrious rock quartet and their revolutionary fusion of creativity and thought-provoking rebellion.

Review: We're big fans of the Doors here at the Legion.  They were one of the first rock bands that really got my attention as a kid.   I remember going to see the Doors movie starring Val Kilmer back in the day, it was this great biopic.  Now, we get something even better.  This is an actual documentary about the band.  The narration by Johnny Depp is appropriate, since he's such a counterculture icon.

The documentary features the story of the band, which doesn't include a lot of new insights, but the amount of new and rare footage that has never before been seen by the public is astounding!  This is an amazing documentary about a classic band.  Its definately a must-see!

TCM Spotlight: Errol Flynn DVD Review

Synopsis: DESPERATE JOURNEY Allied airmen shot down over Germany fight their way back to England. ERROL FLYNN leads RONALD REAGAN and other flyboys in a rousing wartime spirit-lifter. EDGE OF DARKNESS They’re everyday citizens – and extraordinary heroes. Flynn and ANN SHERIDAN rally Norwegians against the Nazi occupiers of their once-peaceful village. NORTHERN PURSUIT Icebound wilds and ice-blooded Nazis! Canadian officer Flynn infiltrates a cadre of saboteurs and guides them toward their destination…and into the unraveling of their scheme. UNCERTAIN GLORY The Gestapo decree: 100 Frenchmen will die if a resistance leader fails to turn himself in. Condemned French prisoner Flynn volunteers to pose as the wanted man. Powerful heroism! OBJECTIVE, BURMA! Pinned down in the jungle – and fighting back! Flynn commands a stranded paratrooper patrol in this gritty, volatile tale noted for its battlefield authenticity.

Review: This DVD collection features five classic Errol Flynn films.  These war-time epics are fan favorites from Warner Bros.   My favorite of the five is the WWII film Uncertain Glory.  The heroism depicted in that film is amazing and rarely seen these days.   War films now are all about  shock value, rather than good storytelling.  These Flynn films are such a great look back!

Flynn had that certain something that Hollywood lacks now.  He had a class and an air about him that was very distinguished.  He's old Hollywood and there is always something attractive about that.  Its back when personal lives were personal and the glamour and glitz of the silver screen ruled all.  These classic films are a great look back at what Hollywood used to be, and what many of us wish that it still was.

The films included in this set are: Adventures (Desperate Journey), Edge of Darkness, Northern Pursuit, Uncertain Glory, Objective (Burma).

Review: Letters to God is a very emotionally driven film.  It has the presence of an adorable little boy, but unfortunately he is dying of cancer.  The entire film is his struggle to understand and come to accept what is happening to him, along with the family around him.

This film does have a religious tone to it, so if that offends you then you may wish to stay away from it.  If you are religious, then this film may be one of your favorites this year.  It definately takes a faith-based tone.

A Prophet Blu-Ray Review

A Prophet Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES AN OSCAR WINNER FOR BEST FOREIGN FILM, IS PART COLD-CASE MYSTERY, PART LONG-LOST LOVE STORY, AND PART THRILLER SET BOTH IN THE PRESENT AND IN 1970S ARGENTINA, UNDER THE TIGHT CONTROL OF ITS INFAMOUS MILITARY DICTATORSHIP. SUBBED IN ENGLISH AND DUBBED IN FRENCH.

A Prophet details the gritty prison career of nineteen-year-old Malik.  Arriving at the jail, he is cornered by the leader of the ruling Corsican gang and forced to carry out a number of dangerous missions including drug trafficking and brutal hits.  Over time Malik is able to earn the gang leader's confidence and rise up the prison ranks, all while secretly devising his own plans.

Review: A Prophet really should've been a television show or at the very least a mini-series.  In the tradition of great movies like the Godfather and shows like the Sopranos, this crime drama is epic in every way.   I wasn't sure going into this one how decent it would be, but it really surprised me.

This one is a thriller all the way.  Its based mostly in prison while Malik learns to become a true criminal.  I really found this one enjoyable.  If you're into crime and or prison drama, like the cable show "OZ", this one is definately up your alley.  We highly recommend it.

The film is best viewed in the blu-ray format.  The high-definition picture is fantastic and the sound quality is superb.

To Save a Life Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: When his childhood friend's life ends in tragedy, Jake Taylor decides to use his influence as big man on campus to make sure that it never happens again. Crossing social barriers he befriends a loner, Johnny Garcia. When Johnny's life quickly spirals out of control, will Jake have what it takes to stop him from the same tragic fate?

Review: This film takes place in an urban high school and gives the viewer a rather uncensored look at teenage life.  There are so many pressures, between sex, drugs and alcohol that it can be overwhelming.  To Save a Life takes us on an intense ride that ends in the ultimate battle, the struggle with teen suicide.  This film ultimately ends up being a vehicle to push the Christian agenda.  If you're a Christian, you and your family will certainly enjoy this film.  All others beware that this is a faith-based film all the way.  The acting is solid and has a high production value.  The blu-ray high definition certainly looks great.  All in all its a winner.

After.Life Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: The After.Life DVD and Blu-ray™ bonus features include audio commentary with Co-Writer/Director Agnieszka Wojtowicz-Vosloo, Delving Into The After.Life: The Art of Making a Thriller, and the theatrical trailer. How often do we appreciate something only when we lose it?  In After.Life, Anna’s (Christina Ricci) quest for love and happiness takes a macabre turn when, after a car accident, she wakes up to find the local funeral director Eliot Deacon (Liam Neeson) preparing her body.  He calmly tells her she’s dead. Her funeral is in three days time.  As Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her death, her boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) begins to suspect Eliot may not be who he appears to be.  Does Eliot truly have the gift to talk to the dead and help them transition to the afterlife?  Or is he concealing a more sinister secret?  With its constant edge of menace, After.Lifeis a stylish psychological thriller that provocatively blurs the razor thin line between life and death.

Review: Christina Ricci is famous for picking odd roles.  This film is very suited to her dark sensibilities.  Its full of questions and twists and torture and a great and dark look into the twisted mind of a mortuary director.  Is he vile and wicked or just misunderstood?  Is Ricci dead or is she alive?  These are the questions you may struggle with, even once the film is done.  Its definately one of those that gets you talking.

The film does include a LOT of nude scenes with Ricci, which most that watch it concur is the film's finest attribute.  Ok, scratch that, most boys that watch it concur, lol.  Seriously, its a fun movie..well, not fun, but dark and twisty and disturbing.  That type of fun.  It looks fantastic in high-definition, so go for the blu-ray!

Diary of A Wimpy Kid Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Diary of A Wimpy Kid Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: The Whimsical Adventure Including Never-Before-Seen Deleted Dairy Pages Arrives On "The Cheesiest Edition" Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack and Single Disc DVD August 3

Based on the best-selling illustrated novel by Jeff Kinney, the family comedy Diary of a Wimpy Kid arrives on Blu-ray Disc/DVD Combo Pack and DVD August 3 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. The film chronicles the adventures of wisecracking pre-teen Greg Heffley, who must somehow survive the scariest time of anyone's life... middle school. Convinced it's the "dumbest idea ever invented," Heffley considers junior high school a place rigged with hundreds of social landmines, not the least of which are wedgies, swirlies, bullies, lunchtime banishment of the cafeteria floor and a festering piece of cheese with nuclear cooties that he must overcome to become popular. His diary - or "journal" - chronicles his thoughts, tales of family trials and tribulations, and (would be) schoolyard triumphs.

From its origins as a series of online cartoons, Diary of a Wimpy Kid exploded onto the pop culture scene when Jeff Kinney's first novel was published in 2007. Selling over 30 million copies in print, Diary of a Wimpy Kid spent almost three years on The New York Times' children's best-seller list and has been translated into 33 languages.

From director Thor Freudenthal (Hotel for Dogs) and producer Nina Jacobson (The Game Plan), Diary of a Wimpy Kid features rising stars Zachary Gordon (National Treasure: Book of Secrets), Robert Capron (Bride Wars) and Rachael Harris (The Hangover), as well as Steve Zahn ("Treme"). The Diary of a Wimpy Kid "The Cheesiest Edition" Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack includes the film on Blu-ray, DVD and as a digital copy all custom packaged with additional cartoon pages. Both the Blu-ray and DVD include "Greg's Deleted Diary Pages", which bring the diary to life with all-new, never-before-seen hysterical moments not included in the feature film such as a rundown of the benefits of the Cheese Touch, more gross, silly Fregley fun, and Rowley's lost Zoo-Wee Mama cartoons.

Review: I have to start this by professing how much my son LOVES these books.  All that I heard about all last year in my house was Diary of A Wimpy Kid.  I know more about those books than I ever wanted to!  He's only seven, but he's obsessed.  He won't read anything but these four darn books!  Naturally, when this film comes out we have to spotlight it here on the Legion!

This film follows the book adventures of Jr. High student Greg Heffley.  Greg is ackward in every way possible and he has to deal with the morons that surround him.  The books and the film are snarky and full of great humor.   The live-action adaptation did a really nice job of doing justice to the book series.  My son was most certainly pleased.

The blu-ray and DVD combo pack is a nice way to preserve this film, which is no doubt going to hold-up and be something funny to watch for many years.  The DVD can be taken to a kids' room, where they aren't as likely to have a blu-ray player, and the blu-ray can be watched in the living room with the rest of the family!

We highly recommend this one!  Its great fun.  The special features include:

Greg's Deleted Diary Pages
Fregley's Scavenger Hunt
Chirag's Trail of Tears
Fregley's Shuffle
Mom Drops Greg Off at School
Greg and Rowley Jump Over The Wall
Mr. Winsky's Safety Patrol Assignment
Mom Suggests a Friendship Card
Greg Meets Fregley's Mom
Greg Has The Cheese Touch
Rowley's Lost Zoo-Wee Mama Cartoons

Charlie's Angels Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore and Lucy Liu star as the captivating crime-fighting trio who are masters of disguise, espionage and martial arts. When a devious mastermind embroils them in a plot to destroy individual privacy, the Angels, aided by their loyal sidekick Bosley (Bill Murray), set out to bring down the bad guys. But when a terrible secret is revealed, it makes the Angels targets for assassination.

Review: I'm not going to say much about the actual Charlie's Angels film in this review.  If you haven't already seen the film, then you definately should.  It was a ton of fun.  Lots of pretty girls and action.  The film gets a lot of guff, but honestly, its supposed to be campy and fun, so whatever.

What we're really concerned with today is the blu-ray transfer into high-definition!  Does it hold up?  Is it all grainy?!  The answer is a resounding NO!  It looks absolutely fantastic on blu-ray.  The sound is wonderful and the colors really pop.   The only thing the disc is lacking is new special features, it includes all of the special features of the previous DVD release, however, the deleted scenes have been transfered into high-definition as well, so thats a fun touch.

Overall, this is a great release and update to an already fun film.

Review: We're huge Disney fans here at the Legion.  On top of that, we LOVE Tim Burton!  For that matter, we love Henry Selick.  The stop-motion animation film that Selick has directed is ground breaking.  Films like the Nightmare Before Xmas and Coraline top his list of amazing work.  Tim Burton now brings us a digitally restored version of James and the Giant Peach, a film he produced, on Blu-Ray!

James and the Giant Peach is based on a fantastic childrens book by the legendary Roald Dahl (Charlie and the Chocolate Factory).  The film is based on the life of James, a young boy that is sent to live with his wicked aunts.   Its a fantastic tale of escapism that rivals Coraline in theme and desperation.  This new Blu-Ray edition looks absolutely amazing!  Its a sight to see!  The set also comes with a DVD to give the kids to abscond with!  This one is a must to add to the family or personal collection!

Review: This DVD release is of a 1985 documentary about Jim Henson and his work to that date.  This was a peak time for Henson and he was riding high.  We're confident that e would still be riding high, were he alive today!  The work that Henson has done on the Muppets, Sesame Street and Fraggle Rock alone was ground breaking.  He revolutionized children's entertainment.

The documentary is only about an hour long, so we don't get too in-depth, but this rare television special is a fantastic item to add to your DVD collection!  It features interviews with big names like Henson and Frank Oz.  The subjects covered are all his work to that date, including some of the films like Dark Crystal.  Its a lot of fun and a great watch.  We highly recommend!

Kalifornia Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Kalifornia Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: Kalifornia is a 1993 thriller/road film, directed by Dominic Sena and starring Brad Pitt, Juliette Lewis, David Duchovny, and Michelle Forbes. The film focuses on a psychology student and his girlfriend who are traveling cross-country to research serial killers; unbeknownst to them, a man who ends up tagging along with them on their trip (accompanied by his childlike girlfriend) is a serial killer himself.

Review: Kalifornia is a little-known, but absolutely essential cult classic film!  It stars Brad Pitt in a very early controvertial role and pre-X-Files star David Duchovny!  The film also includes soon to be Natural Born Killers star Juliette Lewis.   The film is essentially a precursor to Natural Born Killers and mirrors the film in many ways.  Kalifornia is far from a media satire, it is a very serious and gritty serial killer epic.

The blu-ray and DVD combo release of this film is fantastic.  Although its lacking in extras, the high-definition transfer of Kalifornia is above and beyond what I would've expected from a 1993 film.  The colors pop and the detail is fantastic.  There is very little grain and its overall a wonderful transfer.

If you haven't seen this film, now is your chance. If you have seen it, now you can upgrade!  Watch DVD Legion for your chance to win a copy of this release!

Escape from New York Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Escape from New York Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: In a world ravaged by crime, the entire island of Manhattan has been converted into a walled prison where brutal prisoners roam. But when the US president (Donald Pleasence) crash-lands inside, only one man can bring him back: notorious outlaw and former Special Forces war hero Snake Plissken (Russell). But time is short. In 24 hours, an explosive device implanted in his neck will end Snake's mission - and his life - unless he succeeds!

Review: Escape from New York is a classic dystopian look at the future that has become a huge cult classic.  So much so, in fact, that they made a sequel, Escape from LA back in the mid-90s.  This classic John Carpenter film has a ton of action and was one of the original 80s sci-fi greats!  Essentially, Snake (Kurt Russell) is dropped into New York to rescue the president.  New York has developed into a sectioned off area that is full of criminals.

The blu-ray release of the film is bitter-sweet.  On one hand, it kicks the crap out of the foreign blu-ray release, which featured too much grain and nasty edges.  Not to mention the color was off.  This new blu-ray release looks great!  The film is primarily shot in night sequences, so you don't get crystal-sharp picture, but you get the best you can possibly have!  The only downside to this release is the huge lack of extras.  The 2-disc DVD edition that came out a few years back included a ton of extras, including documentaries and commentary.  The blu-ray only includes a trailer.   This blu-ray and DVD combo pack is a great addition to your collection, but if you're really into the film, you may want to also go back and pick-up that special edition DVD.  This one definately is worth it for the high-def upgrade, though!

YellowStone Kelly DVD Review

YellowStone Kelly DVD Review

Synopsis: Big man, big land, big adventure. Western fans get all three in Yellowstone Kelly, a strife-torn saga of American soldiers and Sioux warriors in the days after Little Big Horn. Clint Walker (Cheyenne) stars as trapper and U.S.military scout Yellowstone Kelly, drawn into the conflict when he saves the life of a beautiful Arapaho girl (Andra Martin) held captive by the Sioux. She runs off, Kelly gives her shelter and all hell-for-leather breaks loose on the plains. Rich Technicolor photography provides the stunning backdrop for brawling, hoof-pounding frontier action reliably delivered by two genre greats, director Gordon Douglas and screenwriter Burt Kennedy.
Review: Yellowstone Kelly is a great classic western tale of intrigue, action and love! Cline Walker stars in this classic piece of cinema as a standard tough-guy wild west scout, Yellostone Kelly. He falls in love with a native american woman and protects her from the dangers that ensue. Its full of great suspense and the type of dialogue that is expected from a classic western. This is a great film, and rare to find!  This nicely remastered edition is available now online only from the Warner Archive!

Stargate Universe - SGU 1.5 Blu-Ray Review

Stargate Universe - SGU 1.5 Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: The electrifying series starring Robert Carlyle returns, presenting a whole new set of challenges for the civilians and military personnel stranded in deep space aboard an aging spaceship. As Dr. Rush (Carlyle) races against time to locate a tracking devise hidden somewhere on the Destiny, he also begins to suspect that a mole for the Alliance has infiltrated the group. Confronting the constant demands of their ship, the crew must also face their personal demons time and again in this powerful adventure that also features Lou Diamond Phillips, Michael Shanks, Richard Dean Anderson and Julia Benson.

Review: This blu-ray set represents the second half of season one of the Stargate Universe television show.  The crew is still dealing with their old ship and that is constantly causing issues and weighing heavily on things.  The Lucian Alliances is suspected of the attack on the Icarus base and there may be a mole inside the crew!  There is a lot of drama, suspense and action in this series.

Stargate Universe is a great show.  Thankfully Richard Dean Anderson is involved!  It would be a shame to stray completely from the other two series.  If you enjoy science fiction or the other Starage television shows, this one definately won't disappoint!

The show looks amazing in high-definition.  When it comes to shows like these, effects and scenery are everything!  The sound is outstanding and the picture looks phenominal!  This one is a great buy!

Interest Range: Stargate, Science Fiction, Action / Adventure

Accidents Happen Blu-Ray Review

Accidents Happen Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Oscar nominee* Geena Davis stars as Gloria Conway, the sharp-tongued mom in this darkly comic story of a family strangely cursed with a streak of bad luck. But as life takes unexpected detours, Gloria manages to tear apart her pain to find the humor in even the toughest things that happen to her. When her teenage son Billy uncharacteristically lets off some steam in a series of scandalous pranks, the tragic results are something no one could have predicted. But with the love of his family and some unexpected help, Billy sees the magic behind lifes oddest accidents. *Best Supporting Actress: The Accidental Tourist, 1988

Review: I didn't expect much going into Accidents HappenWe haven't seen much out of Geena Davis in years and I hadn't heard any hype surrounding this particular film.  I was pleasantly surprised to find a great story that includes some dark humor, but is ultimately a film on the modern family.

While acting out, due mostly to their slightly disfunctional life, the son Billy creates a massive tragedy.  It takes you by surprise, but is the pivot for the entire storyline.   I greatly enjoyed this one, it has a few laughs, but is really a great drama in disguise.

The best format for this film, as all films, is blu-ray!  You can't beat the high-definition transfer, which looks great on this film.

Review: I'm always struggling to find great childrens programming.  You typically get stuck with something in appropriate on Cartoon Network or mindless on Nick.  We like to give the kids PBS, but they want some variety sometimes.  This new DVD set from scholastic is a great answer.

The set includes 8 great Rosemary Wells children's stories.  They are not only fun, but they have great lessons on life for the kids.  The narration is entertaining and its a great way to spend some time with the kids, or to just let them sit and enjoy something that isn't bad for them!  I definately recommend this set for anyone that has a child ages 2 or older.
