Review: Nip/Tuck is widely regarded as one of the best sensual dramas on television.  It went for a total of six seasons, this DVD set representing the final season of the show.  That is unheard of for FX.  I can't watch a show for more than two season before it gets cancelled on that network!  That is a testament for how great and long-reaching this show really is.

The final season of Nip/Tuck gives us 19 more episodes, as the clinic closes its doors, we watch Sean and Christian's relationships fall apart, as well as their business.  The financial crisis in America effects things like elective plastic surgery!    The season has the usual great guest stars and plenty of drama to wrap up one of the best series in so many years.   This is a great DVD set, it begs to be purchased!

Review: What do you think of when you think of Larry David?  Dry.  Oh, and Seinfeld.  I guess thats two things.   Curb your Enthusiasm is what came of the cancellation of Seinfeld.  You knew that Larry David couldn't just sit around the house doing nothing, so here it came.  A show that finally hit a mark that even the famous Seinfeld could not.  Its dry..its dry and its bizarre.  Its so uncomfortable its fantastic.

Don't take my word for it, check this out..this is an HBO series.  Have you EVER heard of an HBO series going seven seasons?  NO.  You haven't, cause its unheard of.  Oh, and guess what, they're coming back for season eight, too!  Its not over yet folks.  So, get in on this today and pick up season 7 on DVD.  In fact, go back and get the other six if you haven't already!

Review: Ice Road Truckers is a weird show.  What do I mean by weird?  I dunno, I guess that if I worked in television I wouldn't think to myself "oh, maybe we should follow around truck drivers and people will be glued to the tv".  I tell you what, its a good thing I'm not in television.  I had never had the chance to see this show until this blu-ray arrived and I actually dug it!

They basically follow these truckers that go on dangerous treks through icey and mountanous areas.  And why is this interesting?  Think about it.  What would happen if no one crossed through these areas?  It would stop the flow of production to consumer of products and goods all over the country.  Their job is actually very undervalued and unknown.  The unsung heroes of the economy you could call them.  Its a fun show, different and certainly worth watching.

Review: Why am I seriously telling you whether or not to buy this release?  This is the legendary Monty Python.  Comedy BEGINS with these boys.  Are you some sort of idiot?  Do you like to laugh?  No?!  Well, then shove off.  Otherwise, if you enjoy laughter and all types of jovial behavior, then you absolutely adore Monty Python and you'll purchase anything those money-grubbers stamp their name on, right?  I know I do!  

This blu-ray is without a doubt GREAT!  It features all of the boys, with the exception of that John Cleese character.  Who knows whats up with him, but everyone else has come together to celebrate 40 years by re-enacting a ton of old bits for us all to enjoy.  These guys are the rock gods of comedy, and by god they still have it.  Its fun to see Terry Gilliam back in comedy, because the feature films that he directs are exceedingly dark, which I love, but you just don't see him in that light anymore!

You need to buy this.  BUY THIS.  Or suffer the consequences of being laughed and generally mocked by all appropriate authorities.

Synopsis: Buddy Valastro is one of the most successful and renowned cake artists in the United States. Master baker of Carlo's City Hall Bake Shop in Hoboken, New Jersey, Buddy is the cake boss. He supervises a team that includes his mother, four older sisters and three brothers-in-law. And when you're working with family on a daily basis, there is bound to be a lot of drama. The Valastros know drama but at the end of the day they also know love. Cake Boss is the half-hour series that chronicles Buddy's over-arching desire to achieve his late father's dream of making Carlo's Bake Shop a household name with or without the help of his family.

Review: This set is exclusive to the Discovery Channel Store.   My wife and I started watching the Cake Boss during season one.  To be honest its not the type of show that I would think I would enjoy, but I was surprised by the entertainment value.  Firstly, the cakes.  I had no idea that such amazing cakes could be made.  Its really fun to see the artists at work creating these decadent masterpieces.    Not only do you get to see a few great cakes made from start to finish, but you get to see the reactions of those that ordered them. 

Another great level to the Cake Boss it the drama inside the shop.  Buddy runs a tight ship, but most of his staff is family, so they bicker a ton.  I mean a ton.  Its rather hilarious.  Buddy is a very likable guy that really is passionate about what he does.  Season two brought us a ton more cakes and some hilarious moments.  I recommend picking up seasons one and two if you haven't already.  Then, you can tune in now for season 3 on TLC.

EPISODES:

1. Plants, Pranks, & a Proposal: Buddy has to create a cake inspired by wicked and poisonous plants. A customer wants to propose to his girlfriend at the bakery and asks Buddy to make an engagement ring box cake, and Cousin Anthony is set up...for a fall!

2. Candy, Crash & Crisis: Buddy and company are surrounded by sweet temptation when they're asked to make a cake for Dylan's Candy Bar and the sisters are also feeling tempted to hire an assistant for Buddy after they can no longer handle all the incoming orders.

Review: They don't make movies like this anymore.  The era of classic comedy has long since passed us by, but you can relive it now with Red Skelton!  These three films, otherwise known as the Whistling trilogy, are absolutely hilarious.  They didn't need cursing to be funny, Red relied on real and actual humor to get his jokes across.  The Warner Archive has been releasing vintage television shows and film for some time now, and this is a great way to get ahold of so many wonderfully overlooked releases.  This DVD set gives you three movies for the cost of one new film!  Its a great bargain and something you can enjoy with your entire family!

Review: The phenomenon that is Bad Boys began back in the mid 1990s.  The film is essentially a buddy flick that pairs two of the biggest actors of the era, Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.  They are, of course, cops and they are battling...guess what?  Drug dealers.  Its a cliche format done time and again, but what changes here is the two dynamic actors.  The budget it big and the actors are great quality, so finally it works!  This film is a great precursor to films like Rush Hour.

This new blu-ray release is the first time we get Bad Boys in high definition.  The resolution actually looks pretty damn good, too!  I was happy to get this good quality film for our blu-ray collection.  Its a great release and an enjoyable film.  Now, all we need is for them to release Bad Boys 2 on blu-ray!

Synopsis: Arthur Poppington (2009 Golden Globe® Nominee Woody Harrelson) doesn’t need superpowers or fancy toys to fight crime. Review: I went into Defendor not sure what to expect.  I kinda thought it might be a rip off of 'Kick Ass', but I am pleasantly surprised to say that I was wrong.  Defendor is the tale of a slightly 'special', but good-hearted man that is trying to avenge his dead mother through an apparently mis-guided, but justified quest.  He enlists the help of a young prostitute that at first takes advantage of him, but learns to love him.

Defendor is full of dark comedy, action and drama.  Its not a silly film and it takes itself very seriously.  Its a great movie with fantastic actors and a very realistic ending.  I found myself greatly enjoying the film and recommending it to others.  Any comic book fan will be highly amused and fans of oddball and dark comedy will stand-up and take notice.

Review: The Wild Things series is going strong with this fourth film.    We get more of the same with this direct to blu-ray feature film.   We get a great police case involving death that eventually leads into various gratuitous and revealing sexual scenarios.   I struggle for interesting things to say about this film.  Its not that its a bad film.  Its made perfectly well and the acting is sufficient, but its one of those sequels that is basically just a re-telling of the original feature film.   If you enjoy this series of movies, then I'm certain you'll enjoy this latest installment as well.

Review: When I first heard that Tim Burton was producing his own take on Alice in Wonderland I was mixed.  I heard all about how it was going to be so computer generated and I didn't know if I wanted to see a re-hashing of this particular story.  I don't know, I get neurotic about Burton, I'm a super-fanboy of sorts and I really want him to be working on something I know I'll enjoy.  Well, of course I felt like a fool for ever doubting the genius of Burton.  He hasn't let me down yet.

Alice in Wonderland is not a re-telling of the story, but rather a sequel.  It tells us what happens to Alice as an adult, when she re-visits Wonderland.  What ensues is one of the most magical and amazing films that I have ever seen.  This tops my charts on fantasy films.  Tim Burton went above and beyond with a highly enjoyable cast and a great script that left us speechless.  The graphics and imagery really worked and came off well, it was just amazing.

The blu-ray looks absolutely beautiful.  This is the only way to go.  This way you can give the kids a DVD to watch and keep that blu-ray nice for your family collection.  We cannot recommend this film enough.

Review: When I was growing up in the 1980s and 1990s we had an overabundance of crazy, over the top martial arts films.   I'm talking you killed my brother/wife/pregnant girlfriend/parents revenge flicks that have the same star doing the same moves over and over in various settings.  Let me tell you, they were fantastic.   I really enjoyed them, but over the past decade and a half that genre has dwindled.  The Undisputed series really brings this era back.

This third film in the series is actually my favorite to date.  It shows us the aftermath of the last film and what has happened to our anti-hero Boyka.  He has been beaten down and life has gotten worse for him, until a new fight is arranged and he yet again has a chance for redemption and to prove himself.   If you dig the other two or just action films in general, this one is for you.

Review:  We're big fans of documentary film here at the Legion and hands-down the best nature documentaries have been through the BBC Planet Earth series. Life is an absolutely breathtaking and comprehensive look at the world around us. 

It took 3,000 days to film this phenominal feature, which is masterfully narrated by Oprah Winfrey.  Life is a joy for anyone that enjoys documentaries and, of course, nature.   The series is divided up into 11 parts and features really amazing sequences that will captivate and thrill you.

Review: Who doesn't love Clint Eastwood, right?  Not only do you get all of the films in his archive, but you get the Eastwood Factor.  The Eastwood Factor is a great documentary that we got the chance to check out.  Let me tell you, it was fantastic.  You get an up-close and personal look at Eastwood..his legacy and you hear a lot from the man himself.

You get stories about the early days of Eastwood working with Warner Bros.  You even see the effect that he holds today, when he discusses how he saved a sound recording studio on the Warner lot that was used to score most of his films.  They've now named it the Eastwood studio and its functional again.  The narration by Morgan Freeman helps to make this documentary enjoyable and most certainly interesting.

Review: Count on the History Channel for in-depth documentaries on almost everything, but an entire series on the history of the tattoo?  Way to be not only culturally relevant, but terribly interesting and obscure.  I LOVE it!

Marked is a fantastic series that delves into the history and cultural significance of tattoos.  Everything from gang and prison tats to ancient civilization.  You might think its odd to cater to what used to be an underground subculture, but today so many young people have tattoos thats its a relevant part of daily life for a good portion of our culture.

Bottom line..the series is fantastic and informative.

In this film good is a relative term as three criminals make a series of tenuous partnerships broken in double-crosses and betrayals in Leone's epic vision of the American southwest as endless deserts and clapboard towns infested with gunmen.

Review: We're big fans of Clint Eastwood here at the Legion.  There are no better examples of his western work than the three films included in the Man With No Name trilogy!  The films include a Fistful of Dollars, A Few Dollars More and The Good, The Bad and the Ugly.   These three are a trifecta of absolute genius.

These three films are as rugged and action-packed as they are dramatic and artistic.  They are so masterfully crafted and executed that you get lost in each film.  These movies define great western and most certainly provide a great stage for Eastwood.  

To get these on blu-ray is a wonderful treat.  The transfer looks great, considering the age of these films.  This is definately a set worth owning.

Synopsis: Owen Wister's 1902 western novel The Virginian was one of the first great novels of the American West. Set in the semi-mythical town of Medicine Bow, Wyoming in the 1890s, it chronicled the lives and relationships of the people who came west and settled the wild land. Starring James Drury in the title role, The Virginian was the first 90 minute television western, airing in prime time on NBC from 1962-1971. The stellar cast included Lee J. Cobb, Doug McClure, Gary Clark and Roberta Shore, and each week brought talented guest stars to The Virginian. Review: This DVD set harkens back to a day when westerns were one of the most popular programming types on television.  The 1950s and 60s were a golden era for these tales of the old west and the Virginian was without a doubt one of the finest of the western tv shows.  

This show really holds-up when it comes to western drama.  The acting is fantastic and the storylines are well developed.  Its no wonder that the show ran so long! 

This first season comes in a very nice collectible tin set with 10 DVDs!  The picture quality holds up nicely and surprisingly it even looks very nice on a flat-screen HD tv.  Of course, you can tell its a vintage program, it still retains that feel, but its definately an enjoyable image.

Synopsis: Bigger and Blackerer was taped during two shows, back-to-back on the same evening at Boston s Wilbur Theatre. As you may have surmised from the packaging, this title applies to both a CD and a DVD. These are separate releases in separate formats with the same name. Some of the material contained on the Bigger and Blackerer DVD, directed by Lance Bangs, will air as a television special on the cable channel Epix on April 10th. And, yes, there is some overlap between the CD and the DVD, but not a lot. Though both media are housed on a shiny, silver five-inch disc, each is an entity unto itself, full of material that appears solely on one or the other. Only by watching the DVD will you learn of Cross unique relationship with the deaf community, share his canny insights into the editorial machinations behind the Bible, and marvel at how well a bald, middle-aged white guy can fill out a pair of jeans. Yet one must listen to the CD in order to hear about gastro-intestinal misadventures with his dog Ollie Red Sox, or sing along with The Sultan s Revenge, the swinging, Vegas-style opening number composed by Cross and his good friend Mark Rivers (author of the theme to Mr. Show).

Review: I hadn't ever heard the comedy of David Cross, and honestly its my loss.  I knew him by face, I've seen him in movies like Men in Black 2 and Alvin and the Chipmunks, but I never had the opportunity to check out his stand-up.  I'm so glad that I gave this one a shot.  We're always looking for good comedians to follow, as so few hit the mark.  David Cross is spot-on.

The main point of his comedy is how stupid America is.  He explains this through our collective political choices, religious view and social morays.  Cross has a style of comedy that is filled with a personal frustration and anger that really seaps through the cracks and provides an authentic and entertaining special.

This DVD/CD set is highly recommended!

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is a modern update of the 1980s series of the same name. The original series made its television debut in 1983 and ran until 1985, consisting of two seasons of 65 episodes each. He-Man and the Masters of the Universe is an animated television series based on Mattel's successful toy line Masters of the Universe. The show, often referred to as simply He-Man, was one of the most popular animated children's shows of the 1980s and has retained a heavy following to this day.

Mattel's re-launched the He-Man toy line, and released an update of the series for a contemporary audience in 2002.  Unlike the previous He-Man series, set on the futuristic planet of Eternia, this version sought to return to the roots of the storyline and provide broader explorations never reached in the first series, including origins for each character, and some first time animated debuts of familiar toyline faces. The series made its premiere on Cartoon Network's Toonami on August 16, 2002.
