Synopsis: In this entertaining homage to the Dark Knight’s silver age adventures of the 1950s and ’60s, Gotham City’s stalwart, resourceful protector goes outside his comfort zone to locales far from home base. If you think Batman is awesome on his own, wait till you see him in action with some of the weirdest, wildest, baddest heroes in the DC universe, including the Blue Beetle, Deadman, Wildcat, the Green Arrow and Aquaman.

Review: The Batman Brave and the Bold cartoon airs on Cartoon Network and is well into the second season. This release features four episodes from season one of the show.

A lot of adult fans/collectors take a great offense to these single disc releases of their favorite animated series. Although Mike Manley from the crew of this show made it very clear that they don’t care for adult fans early on in the show’s production on his blog, many adult collectors and fans have stuck with the show, citing its blend of modern and classic versions of various obscure Dc charactrers and ‘Dick Sprang’ style artwork. The campiness of the scripts on this show harken back to the 1966 Batman show and following Filmation and Hannah Barbera cartoons of the 1960s-70s. I personally had no issue with this show before it aired, I’m always up for something new in Batman animation and I started out on the campy stuff from the 60s and the Super Friends, but the attitude from the show staff turned me off right away.

I have kids and I love kid-centric programming. In fact, its even better when I can enjoy it along with the kids. Brave and the Bold is severely campy and I have a hard time getting into it. Maybe its the sour taste given from the show right off the bat. On the upside, my kids love it and have a blast watching the show. I honestly don’t feel like this show has lasting power with fans, but its a fun way to introduce Dc Comics characters to your kids. If you want a child-appropriate program for the little ones, this is it.

There is no sign of a complete season one DVD release on the horizon. This is the type of show that execs may not feel has the adult fan-base necessary to begin selling season sets, and I’d say they’re correct. One can only hope that they will keep releasing these single disc DVDs. Volume 3 is coming in early 2010. This release does not include any extras.

If you’re into this show, pick up these volumes, its probably all you’ll get. Its great for any adults that are fans of the show and if you have kids, this is the show for you.
