WILD ROVERS arrive for the first time on DVD only at the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_WildRovers
Synopsis: Lifelong ranch hand Ross Bodine decides cowpunching is no kind of life. So he and a raw cowboy half his age rob a bank to get the cash each needs to improve his lot. An indignant posse is soon in pursuit. Filmmaker Blake Edwards made his name with The Pink Panther and other comedies, but he also showed great skill in other genres with the thriller Experiment in Terror, the drama Days of Wine and Roses and this nuanced paean to the West. In performances perfectly matching Edwards’ balance of rowdy comedy and hardscrabble period realism, William Holden and Ryan O’Neal play the fugitive saddlebums, with Holden drawing special praise. “As he grows older, he grows better like a great old wine. All the reverberations from the previous roles are beginning to sound” (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times).
Review: This film has had a sorted past! It was directed back in 1971 by Blake Edwards, who is famous for other projects like the Pink Panther films. He intended this film to be a long epic, but the studio not only cut it, but changed his ending! The director disowned the film and there it sat for years in critical limbo. Now, the Warner Archive is releasing the film the way it was meant to be seen! On DVD for the first time, fans can see the full film with the original ending. This film is a lost gem and its really exciting to see it come to light after all these years. It enjoyed a VHS release back in the mid-80s, but who was really paying attention to that? I found this film to be quite enjoyable and most certainly worth the wait.
