El Topo Blu-Ray Review
Synopsis: It was the landmark cult film that began the whole Midnight Movie phenomena of the counterculture crazy 1970s. El Topo was the most talked about, most controversial quasi-Western head trip ever made, transforming the way risk-taking audiences, seeking mainstream Hollywood alternatives, watched edgy underground films. Classic Americana and avant-garde European cinema sensibilities meet Zen Buddhism and the Bible as master gunfighter and cosmic mystic El Topo (played by writer/director Alejandro Jodorowsky) must defeat his four sharp-shooting rivals on an ever-increasingly bizarre path to allegorical self-enlightenment and surreal resurrection.
Review: El Topo was the first avant-garde effort by Alejandro Jodorowsky in the series that can include Holy Mountain. These two films tie together in theme, which is a trippy journey that takes a messionic character on a path of self discovery and sacrifice. Along the way you have a bizarre film that explores gunfighters, mexican history and religion. This film, as many others, features Jodorowsky as the lead role. If you haven't seen El Topo, it is nearly impossible to describe it to you. Its just that unique.
This odd counter-culture epic is on blu-ray now for the first time! So, how does it look? The transfer into high-definition was a fantastic one. There is little to no grain and the colors pop as much as they can, based on the rather muted palet.
The special features include: El Topo original theatrical trailer, Original script exerpts, El Topo photo gallery, On camera Interview with Alejandro Jodorowsky, Feature commentary by Alejandro Jodorowsky, English feature dub track English, French, Spanish, Brazilian, and Portuguese Subtitles.
