Platoon (two-disc blu-ray + DVD combo) Review
Synopsis: PLATOON tells the extraordinary journey of Private Chris Taylor (Sheen), a young, naive American who arrives in Vietnam and quickly discovers he must battle the Viet Cong alongside the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. His two commanding officers (Oscar®-nominated Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other. Meanwhile, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value: life
Review: Platoon is one of the finest war films of all time. This one put Oliver Stone on the map as a director of darkness and grit. The Vietnam War was shown in movie format for the first time in all its darkness...and the world never forgot it. Were parts of it over the top? I don't know, probably, but this one really made the non-glorious realities of war apparent.
This was a Winning breakthrough performance for Charlie Sheen, and of course it features the great Willem Dafoe. The blu-ray transfer looks absolutely fantastic. They really took care to ensure that the high-definition would really come across. The color, what there is, pops and there is no visible grain.
The special features on this set include: Disc 1: Blu-ray Feature: **Audio Commentary by Director Oliver Stone, **Audio Commentary by Military Advisor Dale Dye, **Deleted and Extended Scenes with Optional Commentary by Oliver Stone, **Flashback to Platoon: Snapshot in Time: 1967 – 1968; Creating the ’Nam; Raw Wounds: The Legacy of Platoon, **Documentaries: One War, Many Stories; Preparing for ’Nam, **Vignettes: Caputo & the 7th Fleet; Dye Training Method; Gordon Gekko and **Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots and Disc 2: DVD.
