BBC Hamlet DVD & Blu-Ray Review
BBC Hamlet DVD & Blu-Ray Review
Synopsis: If you didn't catch David Tennant in the Royal Shakespeare Company's blockbuster stage production of Shakespeare's most famous tragedy, take heart! The Doctor Who star recreates his stage role-praised as the best and most intelligent Hamlet of recent times-in this even bigger blockbuster BBC TV film version, specially shot on location rather than in the theatre, with the entire cast of the original sold-out London stage production, including Sir Patrick Stewart (Star Trek and X-Men films) as Hamlet's murderous uncle Claudius.
Review: I had never had the pleasure of seeing David Tennant in a show before. I know that he is famous for his incarnation of Doctor Who, but he was new to me. What gave me faith in picking up this title to watch is the inclusion of the great Patrick Stewart of Star Trek and X-Men fame, as he is a classically trained actor. What I got in this DVD and Blu-Ray is the absolute finest version of Hamlet that I could've hoped for.
Its honestly hard for many people to get into Shakespeare, but director Gregory Doran has managed to re-invigorate the play for modern audiences, much the way that Baz Luhrmann did for Romeo and Juliet in the mid 1990s. Tennant blows us away with an emotional and very real (albeit disturbed) portrayl in the film. He is absolutely mind-blowing. We figured that Stewart would steal the show, but David Tennant was really amazing.
The film is released by the BBC on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Obviously many don't have blu-ray players still, and in that instance the DVD is fantastic and a great buy. If you do have blu-ray capability, then defintely opt for that format. High-definition is the way to go whenever possible.
