Fourth Annual John Wayne Film Festival Set for April 24-27 in Dallas

Burbank, Calif., February 24, 2014 -- To commemorate one of America’s most iconic film heroes, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment will introduce a comprehensive new DVD set -- John Wayne: The Epic Collection -- on May 20. The spring release, just in time for Father’s Day gift-giving ($149.98 SRP), will contain 38 discs with 40 Wayne films (full list below), including The Searchers, once called one of the most influential movies in American history[1] and the film for which Wayne won his Best Actor Academy Award®, True Grit (1969). The collection comes packaged in a handsome book with unique collectibles and hours of special features.

The coffee table book includes a chronological presentation of Wayne films, enhanced with wonderful photographs; the hours of special features include commentaries, documentaries, featurettes, vintage shorts and classic cartoons; and the special John Wayne collectibles include personal correspondence, script pages/covers, pages with Wayne’s notations and behind-the-scenes artifacts.

Wayne’s legacy will also be celebrated at the 4thannual John Wayne Film Festival in Dallas from April 24th through the 27th. The four-day festival will feature screenings of some of Wayne’s classic feature films, Q + A sessions with Wayne family members and co-stars, and parties celebrating the John Wayne heritage and legacy. All the proceeds from the festival will benefit the John Wayne Cancer Foundation.

In making the announcement of the new collection, Jeff Baker, WHV’s Executive VP and General Manager, Theatrical Catalog said, “Thanks to our recent strategic alliance with Paramount and their catalog titles, we’re delighted to be able to offer this number of titles representing such a broad range of Wayne’s work. Wayne was one of the most popular film stars ever. For more than a quarter century he was one of the tops at the worldwide box-office. This collection will certainly be a ‘must have’ for loyal John Wayne fans and, hopefully, will have an equal appeal to younger folks who want to learn more about him.”

Born Marion Robert Morrison in Winterset, Iowa, John Wayne first worked in the film business as a laborer on the Fox lot during summer vacations from U.S.C., which he attended on a football scholarship. He met and was befriended by John Ford, a young director who was beginning to make a name for himself in action films, comedies and dramas. It was Ford who recommended Wayne for his first leading role.

For the next nine years, Wayne worked in a multitude of B-Westerns and serials in between bit parts in larger features. Wayne’s big break came in 1939, when Ford cast him as the Ringo Kid in the adventure Stagecoach. Wayne nearly stole the picture from his more seasoned co-stars, and his career as a box-office superstar began. During his 50 year film career, Wayne played the lead in more than 140 movies[2], an as yet unsurpassed record, and was nominated for three Academy Awards®[3], winning the Best Actor award for his performance in True Grit (1969).

Gravity (Blu-ray 3D + Blu-ray + DVD + UltraViolet Combo Pack) Review

Synopsis: GRAVITY, directed by Oscar nominee Alfonso Cuaron, stars Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and George Clooney in a heart-pounding thriller that pulls you into the infinite and unforgiving realm of deep space. Bullock plays Dr. Ryan Stone, a brilliant medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone.

Review: Gravity is the kind of movie that people rave about for years.  Its one of those 'oh my god, have you experienced this?' types of films.  The hopelessness bred within the drama that you get from a show like the Walking Dead, but in a more absolute fashion..the dead of space.  One of the huge wins with Gravity, other than the astounding visual effects, is the lead actress choice.  Sandra Bullock carries the emotion of this film on her shoulders and she does an amazing job.  The film is amazing, but to see it on your 3D television is an entirely new experience all together.  The 3D is groundbreaking and a fantastic showcase for the technology.   There is no reason not to buy this film.  Its a sure thing at the Oscars and that is an honor thats well deserved!

Scarecrow DVD Review

Synopsis: For years the urban legend of the deadly scarecrow has haunted children, and in one small town, the evil comes to life.  During the annual Scarecrow Festival, a group of teens are tasked with working on a local farm. Inspired by the surrounding cornfield, they recount a well-known creepy tale of a terrifying, murderous scarecrow. They soon find that there’s some truth to the story. As darkness falls over the cornfields, a monster is out for blood and the teens must run for their lives.

Scarecrowmade its broadcast debut on Syfy October 5.

Review: We see a lot of horror movies here at the Legion, so I've learned to sum them up with the necessary facts.  This movie, which was originally seen on the SyFy network is Killer Scarecrows and hot chicks.  The CGI on the scarecrows is actually really well done and the suspense is good on this film.  It was a really fun watch and a great addition to any horror collection.

Gotham City Serials - Batman/Batman And Robin DVD Review

Synopsis: 1943 Serial: Based on the comic book characters of Bill Finger and Bob Kane, Batman and the Boy wonder do battle with the evil Dr. Daka. With the aid of his zombie army he tries to steal America's radium for the Axis powers.  1949 Serial: The Plot:Batman and Robin confront the Wizard, a criminal genius on the loose in Gotham City with a remote control ray gun

Review: The was a time, believe it or not, when televisions weren't prolific in American households.  These days saw something in the theaters called serials.  The episodes would air as Saturday matinees each week, everything from cartoons to superheroes and more.  There were two Batman themed serials produced, one in 1943 and one in 1949.  These black and white serials captured a very basic look at the characters of Batman and Robin and didn't really begin to give them a good representation.  They do, however, capture a really cool time in history and this early on-screen representation of the characters is an important part of Batman's history.  The serials introduced things like the Batcave and its secret grandfather clock entrance and the look of Alfred the butler that we all know and love today.  Bottom line, this set is a Mill Creek release and the price is right!  This is a must have for any DVD library.

Free Birds Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From the Academy Award-Winning producer of Shrek* comes a hilarious animated adventure about two turkeys from opposite sides of the tracks who travel back in time in order to keep their species off the Thanksgiving menu. Featuring an all-star voice cast, including Owen Wilson, Woody Harrelson and Amy Poehler, Free Birds is loaded with laughs and stuffed with fun for the whole family!

Review: We have four kids in our household, so we're always looking for great new animated features to enjoy with the family.  When I saw that the same crew that did Shrek was behind Free Birds, I was sold instantly.  We found the film to be fantastically entertaining.  It was funny, heartfelt at times even and it definately makes you think.  The movie does have an underlying pro-vegetarian message, which I thought was appropriate, considering our main characters are turkeys!   I suppose they would support such a thing.  We enjoyed it as adults, the kids loved it, cannot recommend this one enough!

Our Favorite Animal Couples in Film and TV History

Don’t be a turkey!
Check out Free Birds on DVD and Blu-ray February 4th

Well, it’s that time of year again. The time we celebrate love and all of the magical feelings that come along with it. Owen Wilson and Amy Poehler star as Reggie and Jenny in Fox Home Entertainment’s animated motion picture, Free Birds. Although Reggie is a time-traveling turkey who is focused on taking his kind off of the Thanksgiving menu, he can’t help but take some time to get to know the lovely Jenny. Their romance blossoms and she gives Reggie added motivation he needs to accomplish his mission.

To help you get into the mood for romance this Valentine’s Day, we’ve compiled a list of the top animated animal couples in film and TV history!

Mickey and Minnie Mouse
Regarded as the “Brad and Angelina” of animated animal couples, Mickey and Minnie have been together since 1928, when they first appeared in the animated short film “Steamboat Willie.” This power couple has managed to survive the ups and downs that come with such a long relationship - including the shift to color, and the invention of computer animation.

Donkey and Dragon

This couple may be the oddest pairing on our list. Even in the cartoon world, it’s not expected that you would find a loud-mouthed donkey, and a fire-breathing dragon, in love. However, that’s just what you get in Shrek. It’s a good thing Donkey is such a sweet-talker, as he had to talk his way out of getting eaten by Dragon the first time they met.

Simba & Nala
Once childhood friends, Simba and Nala were separated by the events that led to the death of Simba’s father, Mufasa in The Lion King. They are reunited when Nala tries to attack Simba’s jungle companion, Pumba the wild boar. Upon realizing they are in fact friends, the flames of young love are rekindled. They eventually go on to take back the empire that was rightfully theirs, and Simba restores his place as king of the jungle.

Bugs & Lola
Bugs Bunny was known as one of the most eligible bachelors in the cartoon world for much of his career. That is, until he met Lola in 1996’s Space Jam. With Michael Jordan as his wingman, Bugs was able to win Lola’s heart, all while helping the Toon Squad defeat the Monsters in the ultimate game of basketball - one that would decide the fate of the universe.

Lady & Tramp
These young pups from the opposite sides of the tracks are responsible for one of the most iconic love scenes in all of film history. Their spaghetti kiss from Lady & The Tramp is the most widely recognizable kisses of the 20th century. However, the kiss was only the beginning of their romance, as they went on to have four puppies together. I guess you could say it was more than just puppy love!

Melman & Gloria
Melman & Gloria’s love story in Madagascar is one of determination. After Gloria confessed her attraction to Alex, Melman is forced to leap into action to try and win over his childhood crush. His efforts eventually pay off as he wins her love and affection. They will likely go down as the most famous Giraffe-Hippopotamus couple in film history.
