Review: I was interested in this movie due to the cast.  It has two alumni of the Hangover (this next generation's Animal House as far as I'm concerned) and Sanda Bullock, who has been a favorite of mine since Demolition Man.  Yeah, thats right...Demo Man.  Anyway, I was excited to see what they'd do with this film.

Sandra camps it up playing a complete loser that latches onto Bradley Cooper's character after one "date".  This very ackward Napoleon Dynamite type girl decides to get her shot at a normal life by going on a blind date.  She then jumps on him before they even leave her parents house.  He realizes quickly that she must be nuts and gets away from her and the rest of the movie is her following him around and acting erradic.

Parents - beware there are is a good amount of cursing and sexual references in the film, along with a rather graphic (for a comedy) groping scene in the first part of the film when Sandra jumps on Bradley Cooper.  This

This is a new blu-ray, so there isn't much to say about the transfer.  It looks great in 1080p high definition.  I can't fault the sound quality or the video its all in order as you'd expect from any new release in 2009.  The film wasn't well recieved by critics or movie-goers, but I enjoyed it.  I liked how nuts Sandra's character was and I enjoyed a lot of the humor throughout.  I timidly recommend it ..comedy is so hit and miss.  It all depends on what you think is funny.

Friday: the Complete Animated Series DVD Review

Friday: the Complete Animated Series DVD Review

You can purchase this DVD online today

Synopsis: Craig and Smokey are back at it! FRIDAY: THE ANIMATED SERIES, based on Ice Cube’s successful Friday film series, is an urban comedy about the misadventures of the dynamic duo. Similar to the film, Craig and Smokey struggle to survive family, friends and life in South Central L.A. The series includes many of the popular characters from the Friday movies, including Deebo and Craig’s dad, Mr. Jones. Relive the hjinks all over again in FRIDAY: THE ANIMATED SERIES.

Review: I'm a fan of animation in general and I'm always looking for an interesting show.  I had no idea that there was a Friday Animated Series until this DVD arrived in the mail.  I enjoyed the first Friday film.  After that, I kinda lost interest.  I'm not really into it anymore.  I think a lot of liking it had to do with the time it came out and where I was in life (a teenager).

The teenager in me wanted to check this DVD out, though.  I needed to see if it was something that was still funny to me.  I wasn't terribly impressed.  The animation is fine, once you get used to it and the situations are typical of what you'd see in a continuation of Friday...but something is just lost in this concept now to me, I don't know what it is.

The bottom line is this..if you enjoy the Friday movies, then you'll enjoy this animated series.  The characterizations are spot-on and the humor is right in line with the film franchise.  The voice actors are not the actors from the film, but they do a great job of immitating.  This is one of those funny cartoons for adults.  WARNING PARENTS - this one is for adults.

Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside DVD Review

Family Guy: Something, Something, Something Darkside DVD Review

Synopsis: The story of The Empire Strikes Back is retold. Darth Vader (Stewie) is hunting the rebel Luke Skywalker (Chris) and his troops relentlessly across the galaxy. On the ice planet Hoth, Luke has a vision of his late mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (Herbert), telling him to go to the Dagobah system to learn the ways of the Force under Jedi Master Yoda (Carl). Meanwhile Princess Leia (Lois) finds herself taking a shine to the scruffy pilot Han Solo (Peter) and, against all odds, the two soon fall in love. But an encounter with Han’s old friend Lando Calrissian (Mort) lands them in the clutches of the Empire. Envisioning this, Luke chooses to forgo his Jedi training to save his friends. It all comes to a head in a climactic confrontation with Darth Vader himself…

Review: This is the second time that Family Guy takes on the Star Wars saga.  It begins with the family watching tv when the power goes out...so they decide to have storytime...I didn't watch the first one (Blue Harvest), but I was interested in checking this one out.    I don't like Family Guy.  I don't watch it..its usually too juvenille and obvious for me.  That being said, its had a few funny moments, but I generally stick to the Simpsons.  I do love a good Star Wars satire, since I adore it so.   I know I'm in the minority in not liking Family Guy, but that makes this review all the more potent.

This really turns out to be much less about Family Guy and all about Star Wars...and I love a good Star Wars satire. Heck, I love a satire of anything that I enjoy.  What I thought might happen is a lack of material.  A lot of spoofs that you watch have some funny moments, but you have to wait through a lot of boring space to get to them.  Not so in this film.  Its almost non-stop laughs.

One highlight right off the bat is the George Takei reference!  Hilarious.  Peter rides a don-don (a ton ton with a Don Knotts head...again made me laugh).  A random juicy fruit commercial in the middle of the hoth scene is a gut buster too, at least for me.  It goes on and on.  I'm surprised by my saying this, but I highly recommend this one . Its going to stay in my collection.

Experience every twist and turn on three discs, including never-before-seen bonus features. You don’t know the whole story until you’ve seen Kyle XY: The Complete Third and Final Season.

Review: I had heard of Kyle XY in passing over the years.  When it first came out we were sent some press releases and such, but I never really gave it a chance.  It just looked too teen oriented for me.  I already watch Smallville, thats enough youthful angst, I figure.   So, when we came upon this DVD I decided to give it a good chance, because honestly most of my favorite shows keep getting cancelled and I need new ones!

Its been referred to as Smallville meets Dawson's Creek and I really found that to be the case.  The relationships in this world take the first chair, and after that comes the sci-fi elements.  This caught me by surprise, because Smallville has really balanced the two very well and this show is definately more love drama than action/sci-fi.  Its still a cool show and definately worth checking out, but don't expect straight sci-fi.

The bonus features on the DVD include Kyle XY: Future Revealed – A look at what would have happened in Season 4, Deleted Scenes and Audio Commentaries.  This DVD set is your chance to wrap-up this cool show and complete your collection!  We even get a look into what would have happened with this series if Fox had graced it with a fourth season.  Honestly, on Fox it was lucky to get three, they're so cancel-happy (we still miss the Sarah Connor Chronicles!).  The story could have been more involved and the acting isn't always top shelf, but this is a cool show and worth getting into.

Experience all 12 episodes of Volume Three, complete with exciting bonus features -- including a behind-the-scenes look at the cast -- only on DVD!

Review: It seems like television is hard pressed to go without its teen dramas.   Whether its 90210 or this newer shot, The Secret Life of the American Teenager.  This ABC Family show, often called simply 'Secret Life' is a huge hit.  It even beat out Gossip Girl at times in the ratings.

The show has released two previous seasons and this newest one is full of great situations and the crazy kind of drama that teens not only enjoy, they seem to need.  Secret Life delves into all types of issues, even centering around teen pregnancy, amid much controversy.  Its great to see a television show dealing with a real life issue like that, most shows like to pretend it doesn't exist.

This third volume shows the characters dealing with the struggles of teen motherhood, trying to juggle work, school and the baby, plus the in-depth and complicated relationships of the other characters.  The show will be staring up again in 2010, so catch up now with these great DVDs.  You'll definately need them to catch up on the drama!

Extract Blu-Ray Review

Extract Blu-Ray Review

You can purchase this blu-ray online today!

Synopsis: The creator of OFFICE SPACE, writer-director Mike Judge (BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD), moves from cubicles to the assembly line with EXTRACT his outrageous return to workplace comedy, featuring a hilarious ensemble cast of quirky characters. About to sell his successful flavor extract company, life is almost sweet for Joel (Jason Bateman) until a freak on-the-job accident happens. Add to that his bored wife (Kristen Wiig), his laid-back best friend (Ben Affleck), a sexy con artist (Mila Kunis) who blows into town with dollar signs in her bedroom eyes, and a dumb gigolo -- and life as he knows it turns sour. Filled with laugh-out-loud one-liners and raunchy comedy, EXTRACT is 100% pure hilarity.

Review: I was a big fan of Office Space, another film by Mike Judge, which serves as a close brother to Extract.  I did go back and watch the film recently and it just wasn't as interesting to me.  Extract really brought me back into Judge's universe, though.  The highlight of this film is Kristen Wiig.  I'm going to go on record as saying she is one of the funniest and most underrated women in film today.

The story of the film isn't quite as interesting as the banter.  This is something that Judge's writing has in common with Kevin Smith.  This isn't Clerks 2 quality humor, but its still funny.  The characters are full of life and have some great lines and observations.

The only way to own this one is on blu-ray disc!  Thats not to say that they don't offer it on DVD, but there is no point to wasting your money on DVD anymore if a blu-ray option is available to you!  The high-definition and amazing sound isn't to be missed.

Bonus Features include: Exclusive To Blu-ray Deleted Scene, Exclusive To Blu-ray Extended Scenes, Mike Judge's Secret Recipe Featurette The Ingredients For A Classic Mike Judge Film

Review: I'm a self-admitted Highlander nerd.  I got into this show during the first season, back when I was in high school.  I was already heavily into the first film.  I even had the unofficial film soundtrack, Queen's 'Its a kind of Magic'.  Don't believe I'm a fanboy?   I used to order product from the Highlander catalog.  I have a watcher necklace.   I remember when Tess died, I think I cried.  See, I told you so!  When the series came out on DVD I scooped it all up greedily, much to my wife's chagrin, lol.   Then, I hear earlier this year that the series is finally being put out on blu-ray, but will only be available on Legendary Heroes, the official Davis-Panzer website.  I was anxious to check out the quality of the transfer, since so many films from the 1990s suffer from excessive grain.  How does this set stack up?

Ok, I'm going to get right to the most important thing about this set..the transfer to blu-ray.  This series is already on DVD, so really this is the concern.   Should you upgrade?  In one word...YES.  Allow me to explain.  I have reviewed a lot of blu-ray in my time and I come across so much grain and poor quality.  This series could have really suffered in the transition to blu-ray, but Davis-Panzer obviously took painstaking care to ensure that the video quality not only didn't suffer, but reflected a high-definition look.  The transfer is absolutely fantastic.

The Highlander series on blu-ray is not widescreen.  Davis-Panzer never made any bones about this, in fact they released a lot of information and images to let us know that the show would be offered in full-frame format (1:33:1), as that is how the series was originally aired.  When you convert to 1080p high-definition you get a widescreen format (1:78:1), so rather than leave the space black you can opt to have these cool decorative pillars on the sides of the screen.  I thought this was a nice touch, but I just opt to watch it with the black space personally.

The blu-ray set includes new special features (seen above) along with the old ones from the DVD.  This set collects the entire first season of the show from 1992-93.  It has the original intro with that original rock-like logo and of course the best Queen song ever written.

The bottom line on this set is that any fan of this show can feel secure in upgrading their collection.  If you don't own the series yet, even better.  The second and third seasons should be out this next spring on blu-ray, so you won't have to wait long to expand your collection.  The total of six seasons shouldn't take long to release.  This series experienced delays, because Davis-Panzer cares so much for their properties that they wanted to ensure that it was perfect for the fans..and they have.  Highlander: the Series on blu-ray is an absolute gem.

The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-Ray Review

The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-Ray Review

You can purchase this blu-ray box set online today

Synopsis: Best known as a creator of broad film farces and uproarious parodies, jack-of-all-trades Mel Brooks has been entertaining audiences for years with his wacky and absurdist humor. Now just in time for the holidays, the king of comedy’s brilliant work is available for the first time in high definition in The Mel Brooks Collection on Blu-ray Disc, debuting December 15 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Embark on a hilarious adventure over and over again as the ultimate gift set debuts with some of Brooks’ best films including Blazing Saddles, High Anxiety, History Of The World Part I, Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Silent Movie, Spaceballs, To Be Or Not To Be, The Twelve Chairs and Young Frankenstein.

Review: When I first heard that the Mel Brooks Collection was coming out on blu-ray my thoughts on it were instantly negative.  Its been my experience that attemping to "up-convert" any old film is in fact more damaging than not.  Many of these films are 30 years or older and I've seen movies converted to blu-ray that are ten years old and are full of grain and have terrible picture quality.  I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by this set, it was a Xmas miracle!
The films in the set include all of Brooks' filmography, including the famous Blazing Saddles, Spaceballs and Young Frankenstein.  I forget until I watch these movies again how hilarious Mel Brooks can be.  His films are an American equivalent to Monty Python.  The humor is a bit more obvious, but thats the American part.

The video transfer to high-definition is a large source of curiousity for most readers.  I will be honest, I'm VERY picky when it comes to this category, but I watched all of the films in this set and I was blown away.   There is NO grain.  I'm going to repeat that NO grain.   You get a little bit of dust on some of the films, but I you will be amazed at how crisp and clean these films look.  They did a fantastic job on each and every film in the set.  The sound quality is also fantastic.

I HIGHLY recommend this box set.  You can find it online for less than $100 and thats an absolute steal.

George Lopez: Tall, Dark and Chicano DVD Review!

George Lopez: Tall, Dark and Chicano DVD Review

You can purchase this DVD online today!

Synopsis: One of the most popular and versatile comedians of his time, “G-Lo” has pretty much done it all – TV series, film, radio, stand-up, recordings, a book, and soon, late-night TV as a talk show host.  Now his second solo special for HBO®, George Lopez: Tall, Dark & Chicano, hits stores on December 15, 2009 from HBO Home Entertainment, featuring the hot comic in one of his most controversial performances to date.

Hitting on some of the hottest buttons today as well as familiar issues,George Lopez: Tall, Dark & Chicano finds the multi-talented comedian/actor before a packed house at the AT&T Center in San Antonio, Texas, delivering a no-holds-barred routine on topics like Latino perspectives on change in America, kids these days, parenting, Barack Obama, aging, sagging body parts, sexual frustration, trendy names for children and “rednecks” who date Latinas.

Added to Lopez’s triumphant six-year run as the star of his self-titled sitcom on ABC, is a long list of credits including hosting the Latin Emmy® Awards and co-hosting the Alma Awards®; recording the Grammy-nominated CDs Team Leader and El Mas Chignon; writing the best-selling autobiography Why Are You Crying?; hosting his own morning radio show in L.A.; and  acting in feature films such as Balls of Fury, The Adventures of Shark Boy and Lava Girl, Swing Vote and the upcoming Valentine’s Day and The Spy Next Door.  Lopez’s first solo HBO special was George Lopez: America’s Mexican, which premiered in 2007.

Review: Its very difficult to get a good rating on a comedy DVD.  A comedian like George Lopez had run the danger of becoming very watered down over the year of being on television in a successful sitcom.  This new HBO stand-up special, which was filmed in La Vernia, Texas, is a triumphant return to legitimate comedy for Lopez.

There really aren't enough latino comics of note, so Lopez really carries a lot on his back.  In this comedy special Lopez uses the gift of foul language and controvertial topics to get his points across.  You may not wish to have your younger kids watch this one due to the language.  Thats definately of note since George also has a very clean television show, so you might not expect it.  Mind you, its hilarious for adults.  Lopez delves into politics even, by mocking the Republicans.

This DVD is a fantastic release.  It'd make a great Xmas gift or just a fun addition to your own comedy collection.  George Lopez has proven once again why he's funny.  I know that George also has his Lopez Tonight talk show on TBS weeknights, so you should tune into that, as well.

Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special Blu-Ray Review!

Jeff Dunham's Very Special Christmas Special Blu-Ray Review!

You can purchase this blu-ray online today!

Synopsis: FUN FOR THE ENTIRE FAMILY AND DESTINED TO BECOME A HOLIDAY FAVORITE!

INCLUDES ONE HOUR OF EXCLUSIVE FOOTAGE NOT SEEN ON COMEDY CENTRAL BROADCAST!

Jeff Dunham and his cast of characters join to make Christmas very special -- and hilarious -- like only they know how. All new show also includes bonus material with numerous extras. Share this must-have event with the entire family for Christmas and all year long!

Loaded with additional footage and extras not seen on television including Holiday Tips, Outtakes, Ask Santa-Walter, and Behind The Scenes.

Review: I was only recently introduced to Jeff Dunham's comedy by my wife earlier this year.  I know that he has been popular for awhile, but I'm late in the game on this one.   If you're not familiar with Jeff's work, he is basically a very talented ventriloquist that has a variety of character puppets that spout offensive material, from Achmed the terrorist to bubba.  His live comedy act has become something of a cult phenomenon over the past few years.  Now, this Xmas special is out on blu-ray to enjoy.

Jeff Dunham now has his own show on Comedy Central each week.  Its a pretty good show.  I didn't think he could hold his own in that capacity, but he really surprised me, at least so far.  This special pre-dates that show with a great selection of various skits and bits.  The blu-ray includes a lot of behind the scenes material and other things not seen on the television special when it originally aired.  Its like watching it all over again for the first time!  You defiantely need to score this one on blu-ray.  High-definition is the only way to go.  Firstly, why bother buying a DVD?  Its already an outdated medium.  Invest in blu-ray and you can have this great comedy special to pop in every year for the holidays!

Monty Python: Almost the Truth the Lawyer's Cut Blu-Ray

Monty Python: Almost the Truth the Lawyer's Cut Blu-Ray

You can purchase this blu-ray online today!

Synopsis: Monty Python reunites in this outrageous comedy and also features some of today's biggest comedians including Jimmy Fallon, Eddie Izzard, Dan Aykroyd, and Seth Green. The Pythons are matched against their contemporaries: rock stars, comedians, actors, politicians, Python-haters and potential axe murderers, in this never-before-seen outrageous comedy from the biggest comedy troupe of all time. Watch as Monty Python is brought to life on-screen in this six part mini-series which is airing on the IFC Chanel. The Monty Python troupe includes John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman.

Review: We love Monty Python here at the Legion.  When I say that we love Monty Python, I mean that we're complete fanboys.  We've seen all of the films that Terry Gilliam has directed.  We watch Michael Palin and John Cleese whenever possible in film roles.  Eric Idle still convinces us to watch the terrible films that he cameos in.   We still mourn Graham Chapman.  We're sad like that.  Needless to say, when there was a new Monty Python release coming out, it got our attention!

This blu-ray collects a six-part documentary series that will be running on the Independant Film Channel (IFC).  The documentary takes a unique look at the Python boys by conducting interviews with each of them about their days on the Flying Circus show, up to the present day.  They explain a lot of the behind the scenes motivations to things that we don't understand as fans, such as why there will be no new Python projects with the remaining boys.

This set really delves into any and everything you could want to know about Monty Python.  You even get to hear from celebrity fans like Dan Ackroyd and Eddie Izzard.  I highly recommend picking up this blu-ray.  Of note, its the only other Monty Python blu-ray release next to the Life of Brian, and this one is far more entertaining!

World's Greatest Dad DVD Review

World's Greatest Dad DVD Review

You can purchase this DVD online today!

Synopsis: Robin Williams stars as Lance Clayton, a man who has learned to settle.  He dreamed of being a rich and famous writer, but has only managed to make it as an unpopular high school poetry teacher.  His only son Kyle (Daryl Sabara) is an insufferable jackass who won't give his father the time of day.  He is dating Claire (Alexie Gilmore), the school's adorable art teacher, but she doesn't want to get serious, or even acknowledge publicly that they are dating.  Then, in the wake of a freak accident, Lance suffers the worst tragedy and greatest opportunity of his life. He is suddenly faced with the possibility of all the fame, fortune and popularity he ever dreamed of, if he can only live with the knowledge of how he got there.

Review: This is one of those films that can only be categorized as a dark comedy.  Robin Williams is generally known for his outrageous hilarity, but over the past decade he's done some more independant style roles and this one takes the cake.   This is the darkest film I've seen since Kevin Spacy American Beauty.

In many of the scenes its what Williams doesn't say, rather than what he does that really hits home.  His silent foreboding looks.  You can see him trying to absorb and understand what has happened to his life and to our society in general.  The lack of intimacy and closeness...opportunism, narcissism and other negative effects that have overrun society over the past few decades.

I truly enjoyed this film.  It doesn't give you the American ending.  You don't get the cliche moments of redemption.  This really can only be categorized as an independant film with a mainstream actor who is clearly searching for a deeper voice in his older years on the screen.  I have learned that I much prefer Robin Williams in dramatic roles.  I highly recommend this one if you're into alternative film and dark comedies.

You won’t want to miss one extraordinary moment of this extended, magic-filled and action-packed movie!

Review: This Wizards of Waverly Place is quite popular in our household.  Ever since we got the Disney Channel the kids have been glued to it.  My daughter loves all of the witchery, but I think my son just thinks Selena Gomez is cute.  Sigh.   I remember when this movie aired, my kids had to make sure we were home in time to see it.  It was a big ol' deal.  I wasn't sure why, so I started to watch this show with them more often.  What I found was a formula that I've seen work many times in the past, but with a twist.

When we opened the extended edition of this film, the kids were SO excited to find that it comes packed with a keychain that has some sort of magic stone in it.  Its something they understand being regular viewers of the show I guess, but they loved it.  This film delves into the idea of what would happen if Alex (Gomez) wishes that her parents never met.  Its really a fun film, and as a parent this show has grown on me.  I hope its around for many years to come.

This one would make a great Xmas gift, so I'd pick it up today!

Rising Anime Star Toshiyuki Kanno Discusses Halo Legends

Rising Anime Star Toshiyuki Kanno Discusses Direction
of “The Babysitter” Episode within Halo Legends

Warner Home Video to Distribute Compilation DVD on Feb. 16, 2010

Toshiyuki Kanno, one of the rising stars in anime, brings his distinct action style to the world of Halo with an innovative, yet uniquely familiar approach to the episodic film “The Babysitter,” one of the seven stories within the upcoming Halo Legends.

Warner Home Video will distribute Halo Legends on February 16, 2010 as a Special Edition 2-disc version on DVD and Blu-Ray™, as well as
single disc DVD and available On Demand and Digital Download. The DVD anthology of episodic films based within the mythology of the popular game Halo is produced by 343 Industries, a unit within Microsoft Game Studios.

Kanno worked with Studio 4oC (and producer Eiko Tanaka) to create the Halo Legends episode, “The Babysitter,” which focuses on the intense rivalry between the ODST (Orbital Drop Shock Troopers) and the Spartans. When given an assignment to assassinate a high-ranking Covenant Prophet, a four-man team of ODSTs must accept a Spartan Sniper to their strike force. Each discipline learns something important about the other as the mission progresses into hostile territory - and old rivalries must be reexamined if the mission is to succeed.

The episode emphasizes the differences in ability and style between
the two soldier types, and features a few familiar faces – Dutch from
Halo 3: ODST and his teammates Private O'Brien, Master Sergeant Cortez
and Corporal Checkman. The Babysitter was first previewed for Xbox
Live subscribers on November 7, 2009.

Kanno has rapidly established himself as a force within the anime
industry, building a reputation for directing stylish action anime in
such productions as Black Lagoon, Fighting Spirit, Aquarian Age and
Zone of the Enders. He also worked on special effects for Digimon: The
Movie.

Kanno provided some further insight into the production of “The
Babysitter” via the following Q&A. Read on …

Question:
How does Halo lend itself to anime/animation?

Kanno:
Halo is a property filled with so many exciting characters and
detailed story settings with a very vast/huge background, and I
believe that the property has a lot of room to create episodes. Thus,
I think that various ways in anime development can suit the property
in whatever style the creators employ.

Question:
What was the inspiration for your artistic vision in your episode of
Halo Legends?

Kanno:
What inspired me the most are the "ruins of an unconfirmed space
alien.” Of course, we had a premise that the ruins are Forerunners,
and Microsoft/343 Industries provided us with a good deal of leeway to
create new elements. We have tried to incorporate a Japanese taste as
much as possible to the buildings, costumes, and other visual things
to try to add greater depth and expand the Halo realm.

Question:
Were there any particular images within the Halo realm that helped
shape or drive your creative vision?

Kanno:
We found inspiration in all of the art books provided by Microsoft,
especially the beauty of the nature shown in the image boards as well
as in the game itself. I tried to incorporate a similar beauty in my
episode. In addition, the costume and the weapons of various
characters such as the Brutes, Elites and Prophet provided me with
inspirations in creating the characteristics of this episode.

Question:
Why were you the right person to direct/design/write this episode?

Kanno:
The original script describing a story relating to the relationship
between Spartans and ODST was been provided by Mr. Frank O’Connor. I
discussed with Ms. Tanaka, the producer of the episode, that we needed
to brush up the story to make it more understandable and impressive,
and proposed the new script to Microsoft. I believe that the script
has become better suited to animation.

We had a very strong design and animation team. I was in charge of
character designs and focused on creating designs to easily express
emotions of each of them. I employed Mr. Hayashi and Mr. Suzuki to
design mechas, such as those involving the Spartan,  ODSTs and
Covenant. They have been very good in creating mechas that are simple
but very cool designs.

Mr. Sasaki was in charge of background designs, and his ideas helped
realize a very distinguished world of “The Babysitter” – giving our
anime sensibility, but retaining the Halo taste. He has created an
original UNSC spaceship and the design seemed to please the Microsoft
staff.

Both Ms. Miyuki, who was in charge of coloring, and Mr. Watanabe, who
headed the CGI as well as the screen plan, focused on keeping a
balance throughout the entire episode. I believe that they contributed
a lot in accomplishing a profound screen play.

Question:
What did you set out to accomplish in this episode, and why do you
think you achieved or exceeded your goals?

Kanno:
The most distinguished characteristic of this episode is that this is
the only episode in Halo Legends where ODST characters appear. During
the production of this episode, a new Halo game “Halo 3: ODST,”
featuring ODST characters, was released – and our episode has some
common characters with the game. Thus, we felt an intense pressure to
make the episode very enjoyable to the newcomers to the Halo world
and, more over, to ensure that the episode would not betray the trust
of the game fans.

I, myself, was a quite a newcomer to Halo at the beginning of this
project, and it was a very hard process to understand the vast realm
of Halo and to create new things out of it.  Consequently, I have
found out that the episode has become very exciting and much better
than I had originally expected. I believe that this result comes from
the efforts of each and every member of our production staffs. This
was a very collaborative effort.

Question:
How important was having Halo gaming experience to bringing the world
to life in anime?

Kanno:
I am not at all good at playing video games, and I have not played
that much. But my staff played a great deal, and both myself and my
staff spent a lot of time viewing the long-playing movie many times to
ensure we understood the Halo realm as well as the details of its
settings.

Question:
Are there any hidden images or behind-the-scenes “Easter eggs” –
special little things you included for the devout Halo fans – that
appear within your episode?

Kanno:
It was simply tough enough for me to understand the Halo universe
during such a short period of time, so I did not have time or room to
create such “hidden images” etc. However, I strongly believe that
every viewer will feel the enthusiasm of all of our creative staffs in
the episode.

Bleach Volume 23 DVD Review

Bleach Volume 23 DVD Review

Synopsis: Kariya and the Bounts arrive in the Soul Society and find themselves battling two Soul Reaper lieutenants, but the abundance of reishi in the Soul Society gives the Bounts a ready source of power, rendering them formidable opponents. Ichigo and friends arrive in the Soul Society, and when Rukia is injured in a fight, Ichigo follows her to the Kuchiki house, where he asks Byakuya to fight alongside him against the Bounts. Byakuya refuses and insists they leave it up to the 13 Court Guard Squads, but soon enough Byakuya finds himself in a one-on-one battle with Kariya. (Episodes 92-95)

Review: This is the 23rd volume in the Bleach series, released by Viz.  This single disc release includes episodes 92 through 95 of the series. These episodes take on a rather dark tone at times with some near death experiences and bloody sword fights, but there is time still for moments of humor in classic Bleach fashion.

This volume does include some great moments, but is mostly comprised of story and filler that is a build up to future action in the later Bleach volume releases.  This is a single disc release, which is my pet peve, but the Bleach series is really fantastic, and if we can't get boxed sets I'm happy they're at least consistantly and frequently releasing these volumes for the fans.

G-Force Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Pack Review

G-Force Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Pack Review

You can purchase this Blu-Ray/ DVD / Digital Copy Combo pack online today!

Synopsis: Buckle up for thrilling edge-of-your-seat action and laugh-out-loud fun in Disney’s family comedy adventure G-Force. Just as the G-Force — an elite team of highly trained guinea pigs — is about to save the world, the F.B.I. shuts the secret unit down. But these next-generation action heroes — Darwin, loyal team leader; Blaster, weapons expert with attitude to spare; Juarez, drop-dead gorgeous martial arts diva; and tag-along Hurley — won’t be stopped. Armed with the latest in high-tech spy equipment, and with the F.B.I. on their tails, the fur flies as they race against the clock to save the world. From the producer of the Pirates Of The Caribbean trilogy and National Treasure, and filled with high-octane action, daredevil stunts, cutting-edge special effects and outrageous comedy, G-Force is fantastic fun for the whole family.

Review: The first time I saw this trailer my wife and I looked at each other and laughed.  Not just because the film looked cute or there was a funny moment, but we knew instantly that our kids were going to just die with laughter.  Later that day we made sure our daughter and son saw the trailer and behold, they were cracking up.  From then on they were obsessed with seeing G-Force.  Unfortuantely for them, we don't do a lot of movie theaters, so we waited for it to come to Blu-Ray.   Since dad gets stuff early for the site, they were counting the weeks.  Finally the moment came and let me tell you, this one hit the mark with not only the kids, but the parents too.

This film is packed with action and adventure.  The all-star cast includes notables like Bill Nighy, and yet the G-Force steals the show.  Another example of great computer animation placed with just the right voice actors.  The jokes are spot on and the fun is family friendly, which isn't easy to find.

Disney has really brought life to the market with these combo packs.  I definately appreciate being able to have the blu-ray copy, DVD AND a digital copy.  That way I can load this on my iPod for the kids when we're out and they can steal away to their room with the DVD and if anything happens to it..no big deal, since we have our family blu-ray copy safe and sound.  Its hard to watch movies without high definition anymore, and there really isn't any point to buying DVDs these days.  Blu-Ray is the only way to go.

Naoki Urasawa's Monster Box Set 1 DVD Review

Naoki Urasawa's Monster Box Set 1 DVD Review

Synopsis: What would you do if a child you saved grew up to be a monster? An ice-cold killer is on the loose, and Dr. Kenzo Tenma is the only one who can stop him!  Tenma, a brilliant neurosurgeon with a promising future, risks his career to save the life of a critically wounded young boy named Johan. When the boy, now a coldhearted and charismatic young man, reappears nine years later in the midst of a string of unusual serial murders, Tenma must go on the run to uncover the story of Johan and stop the monster he set loose upon the world. Conspiracies, serial murders, and secret government experiments set against the grim backdrop of the former East Germany are masterfully woven together in this compelling psychological thriller. (Episodes 1-15)

Review: This is a series that we all never thought would make it to DVD.  The stand-out thing about Naoki Urasawa's Monster anime is that it is almost an identical match with the preceeding Naoki Urasawa's Monster manga.  For those not familiar manga is a Japanese form of comic books, but more in actual book format.  Its the same as if someone took a book and almost identically translated it onto the big screen.  That hardly ever happens.

This box set represents the first 15 episodes of the 74 episode series.  Naoki Urasawa's Monster delves into political drama in 1986 Germany.   A demoted mayor...a rebellious doctor..and a child that grows to be a psychopathic monster.  I don't want to spoil this series for you, but you NEED to check this one out.

This series has been airing on the SyFy network, but its so accomplished and so involved that you'll want to own this one on DVD.  I can't hardly believe that this set made it to DVD in America.  This is the type of show that can make leaps and bounds at legitimizing anime in America.

Chanel, Chanel Documentary DVD Review

Chanel, Chanel Documentary DVD Review

You can purchase this DVD online today

Synopsis: Chanel more than just one of the world's most successful fashion labels, also the name of a woman who led a fascinating life. This Paris designer banished the corset from women's fashion, created the bouclé suit and the famous little black dress, and made costume jewellery socially acceptable. Her elegant but comfortable clothing stressed the new-won freedoms of 1920's women; her perfume made ladies irresistible. Chanel's head designer Karl Lagerfeld explains why her simple style is still today an inspiration. Unique shots and designs from the archives reveal Coco Chanel's passion both for fashion and for life.

Review: I had only a basic understanding of who CoCo Chanel was when I went into this documentary.  I had no idea how absolute her influence on the fashion world truly was.  Thats the beautiful thing about a documentary like this.  We learn how she grew up in a peseant village and was abandoned by her father after her mother's death.  In the orphanage they already recognized her talent in sewing.

When CoCo came into the scene women were these extentions of their husbands.  Their fashion had no consideration for the women wearing them.  They deformed their bodies and bent them in horrible ways.  Chanel devoted herself towards fashions that could actually be worn with some comfort and still display elegance and beauty.

The footage that they've compiled is all very grainy and dated.  It really adds to the feel of the documentary.  We get old interviews with Chanel, with others in the industry and a plethora of vintage black and white photographs. The narration by Diana Quick is smooth and pleasing to the ear.  Her british accent goes along perfectly with the european feel of the piece.  The only real downside to the release is a lack of extras, but its a very solid documentary and is well worth the watch.

Lost: The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

Lost: The Complete Fifth Season DVD Review

You can purchase this season on DVD today!

Synopsis: The epic story of Lost twists, turns and time shifts in its brilliant fifth season. Packed with bonus material, including a revealing interview with the cast and an exclusive behind the scenes feature with Josh, Lost is better than ever.

When destiny calls, the Oceanic 6 frantically race back to the island. Discover what forced them to return and find out the fate of all those who were left behind. The answers to some of Lost's most pressing questions are revealed in this spectacular 5-disc collection, complete with deleted scenes, a behind the scenes celebration of the 100th episode and an incredible vault of exclusive bonus features. The show that revolutionized primetime proves once again why it is television's most addictive and creative series.

Review: Lost is finally coming to an end!  Its kind of hard to imagine how television is going to go on without this popular thrill-ride of a show!  I was really into this show for the first three seasons, then I started to get bored when they did the whole 'others' camp thing in season 4, so my viewership dropped off.   When I got season 5 to watch, I wasn't sure what I'd think about the state of affairs.  I mean, a lot of old questions have been answered..a lot of new ones posed and a lot of my time travel theories were apparently accurate.

This season brings a lot of twists as the Oceanic 6 have to decide to make their way back to the island.  It becomes increasingly clear that there is no true escape and that their fates are intertwined with this island.  The story has begun to go beyond mystery into complete and utter writing chaos.  Its very hard to keep track anymore of what is going on and the show has gotten so far off of the original track that I wonder if it hasn't gone on a few years too many.

On the other hand, the series is now coming to a close.  Next year the final season will begin and in order to make any sense out of this show you will need to be very familiar with season 5.  I have high hopes that the 6th and final season will make more sense and help bring this great show to a fitting close.

Bonus Features Include: 7 Lost on location, A Day with Josh Holloway, Los Angeles crew tribute with Michael Emerson, the 100th episode, Time Frame and Continuity, Bloopers, Deleted Scenes

Review: The question that comes to mind is...why?  I should imagine that if you care about Harry Potter at all that you own it by now, right?   It always feels like studios are trying to milk me for more money and preying on my fandom.  In the case of these Ultimate Edition DVD sets, I really feel like they are the exception.  Do you remember a few years back when the Lord of the Rings trilogy came out in these great book-style boxed sets?  Well, this blows them away.

I won't go into too much detail about what is included, since its clearly laid out for you above, but a few observations.  The collector cards are great, they're a hard material and will definately save in the long run.  The extended version of the film was a ton of fun to watch.  I've seen this film so many times, and to add those new dimensions was great.  The book included is full-color and very nice quality.  There is also a digital copy included in the sleeve with the collector cards.  This set looks amazing on our shelf, and with all of the films gettnig this treatment shortly, this is most definately the time to get in on this.

The packaging has a slipcase that goes over the fold out book-style box.  Its all packed securely, no loose discs and no damage to any of the items inside.  This would make an amazing Xmas gift for anyone on your list.  It truly is an ultimate edition of the film

Synopsis: Can life's answers be found where the road ends? Shinobu has disappeared to America, leaving both Yuta and Hagumi with very mixed feelings. But talk about mixed up! If Takumi's feelings are so tied up with Rika, why is he tied up in knots over his coworker Nomiya's romantic pursuit of Ayumi? Plus, senior projects are getting everyone down, but none more than Yuta, who in a sudden burst of reckless abandon takes off on his bicycle on an epic journey of self-discovery...Ah, the enthusiasm of youth! (Episodes 13-24 – includes Bonus Episode F)

Review: There is a misconception amongst some people that anime is all action or sexual violence.  That is definately not the case.  In Japan anime is a legitmate form of storytelling.  Honey and Clover is a fantastic example of this with its slice of life themes and dramatic performances.

This box set collects episodes 13-24 of the series and we follow the relationships, romances and pitfalls of these fantastic characters, as we would any real-life soap opera.   The pacing of this series takes us through the daily life of the characters, everything from job hunts to ackward moments amongst friends, as one tries to let another down easy in the realm of love.  If you're looking for action or faced paced story, this isn't your cup of tea.

This show is a perfect way to get your girlfriend or sister into anime.  This may be geared more towards female viewers, but I think that open minded males can enjoy it, as well.

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Blu-Ray Review

Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian Blu-Ray Review

You can purchase this blu-ray online today!

Synopsis: History is larger than life—and twice as funny—in this monumental comedy sequel that’s “better than the original” (At the Movies)! Ben Stiller leads an all-star cast (including Amy Adams, Owen Wilson, Hank Azaria and Robin Williams) as Larry Daley, a former night watchman at the Museum of Natural History, where the exhibits come to life after dark. But now Larry’s nocturnal friends are being retired to the archives of the Smithsonian Institution, luring him back for a hilarious, all-out battle against museum misfits who plan to take over the Smithsonian...and the world!

Review: I remember when I took my family to see the first Night at the Museum.  I figured that it was going to be a rather dull and cliche kids movie.  And while it did employ some predictable elements, I had no idea that it was going to be so much fun.  Therefore, I was really looking forward to seeing the sequel.  Does it stack up to the first?  Read on...

The magical stone that brings all of the museum characters to life is being transferred to the Smithsonian museum and Ben Stiller needs to return to rescue it.  On the way we meet some new characters, most notably an evil pharoh played by Hank Azaria.  Azaria rescues this film with his fantastic comedic timing and whit.

The transfer on the blu-ray is flawless.  The high-definition graphics really help to move along the action sequences and I won't lie..I'm spoiled.  I want to see everything in HD now, so the blu-ray is the only way to go.  Plus, this one comes packed with the DVD and a digital copy for the iPod, so how can you really go wrong?

This film could easily have been horrible and deserving of a direct to DVD status.  While it doesn't exactly break down any cinematic barriers, it definately succeeds in being a pleasing and enjoyable film.  I have to highly recommend it to anyone with kids.  A great Xmas gift.
