Crude DVD Review

Crude DVD Review

Synopsis: Three years in the making, this cinéma-vérité feature from acclaimed filmmaker Joe Berlinger (Brother's Keeper, Paradise Lost, Metallica: Some Kind of Monster) is the epic story of one of the largest and most controversial legal cases on the planet. An inside look at the infamous $27 billion "Amazon Chernobyl" case, Crude is a real-life high stakes legal drama set against a backdrop of the environmental movement, global politics, celebrity activism, human rights advocacy, the media, multinational corporate power, and rapidly-disappearing indigenous cultures. Presenting a complex situation from multiple viewpoints, the film subverts the conventions of advocacy filmmaking as it examines a complicated situation from all angles while bringing an important story of environmental peril and human suffering into focus.

Review: Here at DVD Legion we love documentaries.  This feature is a great look at the greed and corruption that exists in our world at the corporate level.  It most certainly gave me a rather intense dislike for Chevron!  Crude made a splash at the Sundance film festival, which always makes us stand up and notice.

This film looks deeply into the infamous 'Amazon Chernobyl' case and gives you a look at the real-life drama involved in trying to preserve our environment against the corporations.  What a fantastic film from Joe Berlinger.  He did a fantastic job of hitting this info from so many different angles.  It all comes together in a compelling and intriguing look at a situation that most people have probably never even heard of.

If you're looking for a great true story of modern struggle and corruption, Crude is for you.  Its a little depressing, just because of the sheer nature of the controversy, but its definately a good watch.

Review: These Leapfrog DVDs are a ton of fun for little ones.  This time the lovable frogs, Tad and Lily, blast off to the moon to find things for their school math assignment.   The frogs take kids through all types of counting exercises and the realization that math is everywhere and in everything.

We sat our five year old down to view this one and she loved it.  She is in kindergarten, so she is just staring to explore and understand these concepts of math being all around her.  Our seven year old son is in first grade, and is very advanced in math, far beyond his class, and he still got something out of the DVD.  Its not just educational, its entertaining.

We highly recommend this and any of the Leapfrog titles for your little ones.

Synopsis: What burdens do the survivors of those who survived carry? A young woman in a Nazi concentration camp saves her life by seducing the young doctor who performs medical experiments on prisoners. Cut to decades later, when that same woman (Bisset) is living in New York City and married with two grown sons.

The two siblings have developed differently under a mother with a long history of erratic behavior. The younger one cant cope at all, and the older one copes too well. Portrayed by Josh Lucas, he is now 40 years old and hides out in psychosexual escapades and a job at a fraudulent modeling agency scamming the young and hopeful. He is good at them both--too good. So why is he growing increasingly frightened? Is he losing his game? His sexual prowess and intellectual diatribes no longer make him feel better. He will have to change to survive.

Review: This is a highly disturbing movie.  I have to preface our review with that statement for the simple fact that it will draw some people in further and others will know that they should move on now!  Me?  I'm in the camp with the drawn in furthers...

The relationships in this film are the focus, from the concentration campes to New York in the 1990s.  There is a montage of brutality, violence and sex.  That cocktail ends up making for a very fine and unique film.  The love-making sequences are violent and abusive, but the acting and performances turned in for this sensual drama are top notch.

The blu-ray looks fantastic.  The film comes out great in high-def with no noticable grain or softness in the picture.  Its grisp, gritty and twisted, just the way it was meant to be seen!

Synopsis: An outrageous comedy about ten very different women with one thing in common.Written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Snakes on a Plane, The Eye), this critically acclaimed film features a knockout ensemble cast including Carla Gugino (Watchmen, American Gangster), Emmanuelle Chriqui (Cadillac Records, "Entourage"), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (500 Days of Summer, 10 Things I Hate About You), Connie Britton ("Friday Night Lights", "Spin City"), Simon Baker ("The Mentalist", The Devil Wears Prada), Adrianne Palicki ("Friday Night Lights", "South Beach"), Elizabeth Berkeley ("Saved by the Bell", Showgirls) and Marley Shelton (A Perfect Getaway, W.)

Review: Ever since Pulp Fiction there has been a rash of cheeky and personality-filled ensemble films that tell multiple character stories at once and then tie them all in.  Its not that Pulp Fiction created the genre, but it really made it mainstream.  With Women in Trouble, director Sebastian Gutierrez takes this concept and inserts women that are a huge mess.

This fim is at it's base a comedy, but there are some heavy moments to be sure.  The film follows a number of women...a pregnant porn star, a few women trapped in an elevator, a wife that is getting cheated on, etc.  It follows each of their situations and then at the end we get a big tie-in.

The blu-ray features about ten minutes of deleted scenes, which is great.  The high-definition quality is overall nice on the blu-ray, there are a few moments of inconsistancy, but its hardly noticable.  Overall, we recommend this film.  Its a good watch.

Synopsis: Ricky, Julian and Bubbles are about to get out of jail, and this time, Julian vows to go straight, even open a legit business.  Soon the Boys will all be rich.  At least that's what they've told the parole board.  But when they arrive back at the park, they find it's not the same old Sunnyvale - and it's not the same old Jim Lahey, Trailer Park Supervisor.  Lahey's a new man, hasn't had a drink for two years.  And he has plans - BIG PLANS - for Sunnyvale.  But unfortunately for Lahey, Julian stands in his way.

Review: This movie is insane.  The show lasted seven seasons, which to me is odd.  I've seen amazing shows that can't make it more than one or two, but okay.  Its not that the trailer park boys isn't funny at times..its just that its hit and miss.

The movie showcases the boys getting out of prison (see previous movie) and heading back to the trailer park, only to find that life is changing too much for their tastes.  They find it challenging to 'go straight' in the changing world around them.

This continuation of the Trailer Park Boys saga is definately a step above the first film, with deadpan humor and some rather ackward moments, but it still misses the mark a bit and seems to try a little bit too hard.  It is funny and worth a watch, but the show is still far funnier.

Review: The best way to describe this film is as an unconventional comedy.  I went into it thinking that it may be looking for a few cheap laughs and honestly by the trailers that I saw when it was in theaters it looked as though it was trying too hard.  Another example of bad marketing.  The film is, in fact, not trying too hard, but flows right into it's own little groove of intrigue, delusion and oddity.

The film begins in 1992, though for some reason they play a lot of 70s music and have retro-esque transitions in-between some scenes.  I can write that off to a quirk of director Steven Soderbergh's (Oceans 11-13).  The main character basically goes through the ordeal of becoming an FBI informant and turning on his bosses.  The entire film we hear his quirky inner-dialogue and realize that even when he seems deeply invested in a moment, his mind is racing elsewhere.

Matt Damon turns in a unique and inspired performance that contrats his Jason Bourne character so completely that it really serves as a fantastic resume for his acting range.  The Informant was surprising to us in a very good way.  The twists and turns and ultimate understanding of the mind of this character is a ride that isn't to be missed!

Black Dynamite Blu-Ray Review

Black Dynamite Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: An all-star cast led by Michael Jai White is featured in this 1970's-style blaxploitation action fiilm about the legendary super crime fighter "Black Dynamite." The Man killed his brother, pumped heroin into local orphanages, and flooded the ghetto with adulterated malt liquor. Black Dynamite was the one hero willing to fight The Man all the way from the blood-soaked city streets to the hallowed halls of the Honky House.

Review: I really thought that blacksploitation movies were a thing of the past.  I used to catch re-runs of Blackula late at night.  They were just the best thing ever.  They were long dead...until now!

If you enjoy any ackward and deadpan comedy you'll love this.  Do you like the Simpsons, Family Guy or Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia?  This is the film for you.  If you have a great sense of humor you'll be into this one from the word go.  I could go into the story, but that'd be really pointless here.  What draws you to Black Dynamite is the hilarious modern take on an old genre.  There's afros and kung-fu and disdain for the white man.  Do you need anything else?!

The blu-ray is the way to go.  This film does have a very retro-feel to it on purpose, but the blu-ray still looks fantastic.  This is a fun view, would be great for watching with a group of friends or at a party.  Buy it now, Sucka!

Synopsis: Robert DeNiro leads an acclaimed all-star cast Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale and Sam Rockwell in Everybody s Fine, the heartwarming film that will move you to laughter and tears. When Frank Goode's (DeNiro) grown children cancel a family reunion, the recent widower sets off on a cross-country journey to reconnect with each of them. Expecting to share in the joys of their happy, successful lives, his surprise visits reveal a picture that's far from perfect. A family separated by physical and emotional distance finds a way to come together in a story that will touch your heart.  Bonus Features include The Making Of Paul McCartney's (I Want To) Come Home, Deleted & Extended Scenes

Review: I went into Everybody's Fine thinking that it was going to be a cliche 'feel good' film.  I don't know why I felt this way, I guess it was just the previews that lead me to think this.  I wasn't prepared for the film that I actually got....

The basic premise is that Robert De Niro is all by himself.  His wife has died and his children are all moved away.  He is expecting them all back home around the same table, but thats not going to happen.  They each put him off and you can tell by his desolate 'About Schmidt-esque' life that he needs them.  He goes on a cross-country journey to try and surprise and visit all of his children, but they're all lying to him.  Why?  To protect him...and themselves.

I really related to this film as a father.  I'm honestly not sure if you'll care about this film if you're not a parent.  It really drives home some of the overwhelming emotions that you feel about your kids and the end of your life.  Ironically, children represent youth and life, but they make you think about the end of yours.  The things you need to rest peacefully.  Personally, I want my children to be ok.  To be happy.  Thats the theme of this film, and its a journey that every parent should take.  We highly recommend this film.

Review: Bleach is one of those rare anime series that has it all.  Everything from action and horror to extreme slapstick comedy.  I won't get too in-depth on the storyline, because we don't want to spoil anything for you, but our observations about this DVD set are this....its fantastic.  Why?  You have everything from soul vampires to flying eyeballs and the pizza cutter from hell.  On the flipside, we get intense action and story drama coupled with people turning to dust and soul reapers.

Sounds crazy?  It is!  Thats the beauty of Bleach.  Just when you think it may be getting a little too heavy and taking itself a bit too seriously, it throws something hilarious at you to break the tension.

If you're a fan of Bleach, this set is definately something you need to pick-up.  If you just enjoy anime in general, now is as good a time as any to delve into the Bleach universe!   You can enjoy Ichigo and the gang take on the bounts!   We highly recommend this set.

Law Abiding Citizen DVD Review

Synopsis: Clyde Shelton (Gerard Butler) is an upstanding family man whose wife and daughter are brutally murdered during a home invasion. When the killers are caught, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), a hotshot young Philadelphia prosecutor, is assigned to the case. Over his objections, Nick is forced by his boss to offer one of the suspects a light sentence in exchange for testifying against his accomplice. Fast forward ten years. The man who got away with murder is found dead and Clyde Shelton admits his guilt. Then he issues a warning to Nick: Either fix the flawed justice system, or key players in the trial will die. Soon Shelton follows through on his threats, orchestrating from his jail cell a string of spectacularly diabolical assassinations that can be neither predicted nor prevented. Only Nick can stop the killing and finds himself in a desperate race against time facing a deadly adversary who seems always to be one step ahead.

Review: I used to dislike Jamie Foxx.  I won't lie about it..I fully admit that I felt he was overrated.  I used to watch him on 'In Living Color' and I felt like this foray into the dramatic was absurd, especially considering the music album he did.  Laughable.  My attitude was changed, however, when I saw a special advanced screening of 'The Soloist' with my wife last year.  She's a Robert Downey Jr. sort of gal, so I take her to all of this films.   Anyhew, the point being, he has proven his dramatic chops to me ten-fold.  I now consider myself a casual fan of his work and I put him on a dramatic level with actors like Denzel Washington, which is saying something.  Gerard Butler..I didn't take him very seriously after '300', but he also has proven himself to have some range, although he hasn't made the best choices on all of his projects (ie: Gamer!...ugh.)

Along comes 'Law Abiding Citizen'.  The first trailer I see doesn't really interest me, but since I'm flooded with them for a matter of weeks, I do take notice eventually.  We popped in this DVD looking to get a typical thriller, but low and behold I was shocked  yet again by something more interesting.   Butler really gives us his menacing heel face on this one and he does an exquisite job.  He's meant to play the bad guy!   Although is he really the bad guy?  Thats one of the interesting moral dilemas of this film...who do you side with?

I can't reveal much in my review, because I don't want to spoil even one of the twists and turns for you, but suffice to say that this rather picky reviewer was impressed.  I highly recommend the film.  Go pick it up on DVD, its worth watching more than once!

Synopsis: Scooby-Doo and the gang go on a trip to check on Daphne's sister, Melissa. She's been studying magic at the Whirlen Merlin Magic Academy. Apparently there's been trouble at the Academy. Sightings of a giant dragon have been scaring all the students away. The gang smells trouble and decides to investigate.

Review: Scooby-Doo has been around for so many decades and he's gone through so many changes that there is a little something for everyone.  From 'A Pup Named Scooby Doo' to 'Shaggy and Scooby-Doo Get a Clue', they have constantly tried to re-invent our favorite characters for the generations.  Heck, they've even made some rather odd live-action films.  This time around, Warner Bros. is taking a step back and giving us some more classicly-themed animation.   Abracadabra-Doo really takes you back to the old Scooby-Doo movies of the 1970s!

The gang is trying to help Velma's little sister Madelyn, who is at Magician School, as they are being haunted by a griffin (a half lion, half eagle creature).   This film brings fans a few new things.  Firstly, its the debut of Matthew Lillard as the voice of Shaggy.  You know Lillard as the actor that played Shaggy in the live-action film.  He's a great replacement for Casey Kasem.  Also, the gang has some inner-drama!  Fred's eyes stray to this new magician's assistant, so a jealous Daphne tries to get his attention.  Shaggy is also a subject of a crush from Velma's sister!

If you're a fan of Scooby and the gang, this film is for you.  Its great for the kids and fun for the adults.  We highly recommend it.

We're going to be giving away four copies of this film on DVD!  Watch for that post on the site later today!

20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope DVD Review

20th Century Boys 2: The Last Hope DVD Review

Synopsis: It is now 2015, and Friend rules a disturbing new world. Kenji has been missing since the Bloody New Year’s Eve of 2000, and his niece Kanna, who has been looked after by Yukuji, is now in high school. Her history textbook contains a fabricated story about Kenji and his friends being the terrorists behind the horrific events of 2000. Kanna, knowing the truth, openly resents this, and as a result she is marked as a problem child by her teacher and sent to the Friend Land program because of her anti-Friend behavior. Friend Land is a facility where people with rebellious behavior are re-educated. As the program begins, Kanna and her classmate Kyoko Koizumi achieve high marks and are sent to the advanced program called the Bonus Stage, where they find themselves in a virtual reconstruction of 1971, when Kenji and his friends were kids. There, each of the girls learns crucial secrets about Friend. The surviving secret base members have been separated since Bloody New Year’s Eve but each has spent the last 15 years in various activities opposing Friend and his regime. Otcho has been incarcerated in Umihotaru Prison. Yoshitune now leads an underground group against Friend. Maruo works for an important figure in the regime, waiting for the right time to act against Friend.

As Kenji’s friends all try to find out the truth about Friend, they discover the shocking existence of The New Book of Prophecy, the sequel to The Book of Prophecy. The New Book describes an event: In 2015, at a church in Shinjuku, a savior will rise to uphold justice but will be assassinated. Who is the savior? Once again, Doomsday looms near...

Review: I had actually never heard of the 20th Century Boys until we got this film in the mail.  I'm so used to seeing Viz distribute anime, I was surprised by this live action feature.  This movie is #2 in a trilogy of live-action films dedicated to the infamous manga from creator Naoki Urasawa.   Apparently this franchise has been a big phenominon in Japan for some time, and we're just now getting the imports of the movie trilogy.

I wasn't sure what to expect going into this, so I went back and read the comics.  I have to say that this was a very good adaptation of the book.  The characters Kanna and Otcho really stood out in both dialogue and action sequences.  They really helped to carry the film through.  It kinda feels like the Empire Strikes Back of the Series, its biding its time and building up to something larger.

The film comes in Japanese language with optional English subtitles.  I recommend buying the first part of the trilogy before watching part 2, it'd make a lot more sense!

The Life and Times of Tim DVD Review

Synopsis: What happens when your girlfriend comes home before your hooker has left? How do you convince the police you weren't really raped by a bum during a bachelor's party? What do you do when a priest asks you to object to a wedding, as a prank? What happens when your boss orders you to change your ethnicity in order to meet his corporate quotas? Meet Tim: an ordinary guy who makes a habit out of misunderstanding in The Life & Times of Tim a hilarious, new, adult animated series from HBO.

Review: There are very few animated series for adults.  South Park stands out as one, but honestly even it falls short of truly inappropriate behavior at times.  The HBO show The Life and Times of Tim, on the other hand, stretches all boundries.

The absurdity of the situations that Tim gets in is at such a sophomoric, but hilarious level that you can't help but laugh.  The animation is horrid, of course.  You have eyes...you can see this, but its not about that.  Tim is a very dry character that also exhibits possibly the worst judgement known to man, outside of myself!

I didn't think I'd dig this show going into it, but I have to admit that I was laughing at Tim's antics.  From hiding hookers to..well...you'll have to watch it to find out.  Its well worth it!

Review: Fraggle Rock is a cult favorite amongst certain 1980s loonatics.  For the record...I'm one of those lunatics.  The show has been released in recent years, and then released in full seasons again by Lionsgate.  To accompany these seasons, a few single disc DVDs have made it out into the marketplace.  This is the latest.  If you're on the fence about Fraggle Rock for yourself or you just don't know if your kids will dig it enough to invest in seasons, this is the DVD for you.

The DVD has a running springtime theme with three episodes from the classic Jim Henson show.  It also has a bonus feature of one of the episodes from the animated series, which is also available on DVD.  Will your kids like Fraggle Rock?  Its full of singing...good lessons..and most importantly...MUPPETS!  How can you go wrong there?  If they like Sesame Street or the Muppets then they'll love Fraggle Rock!  You aren't sure if it stands the test of time?  It does.  You love it.  Buy it.  Do it!  Now!

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths Blu-Ray Review

Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths Blu-Ray Review

You can own this blu-ray on February 23, 2010

Synopsis: In a parallel Earth ruled by the Crime Syndicate, the Justice League must fight their evil doppelgangers in a battle that would be dead even, except that their malicious counterparts are willing to do the one thing Batman and Superman never would: kill.

The special features include: DC Showcase: The Spectre "The New World" extended cut, "A First Look at the Next DC Universe Movie", Green Lantern First Look, Superman/Batman Public Enemies First Look, Wonder Woman: The Amazon Princess, Trailers, Bruce Timm’s Top Picks; "A Better World" Parts 1 and 2, "Twilight" Parts 1 and 2 and DC TV pilot episodes (live-action): Wonder Woman (previously on Wonder Woman S1 release), Aquaman (never before released)

Review: When I heard that this new Dc Universe film was coming out I wasn't sure what to expect.  The last feature, Public Enemies, didn't blow me away.  It was alright, but nothing special.  I was hoping for something a lot more in-depth and interesting with this feature, and I wasn't let down.

Crisis on Two Earths is, of course, a reference to the multiverse that exists in Dc Comics.  These DC Universe films are trying to bring some of the great comic stories to animated film, which is a great idea in theory.  This film meshes a few of the Crisis-themed storylines into a new tale.  They did a great job, but I'd honestly rather they just stuck to the straight storylines that are already established.  I realize that doing a Crisis on Infinite Earths animated feature would be like ten hours long, but the geek in me demands perfection!  That being said, this is a truly enjoyable film.  It has enough elements of the comics to be interesting.

The film had a few surprising moments, especially in the beginning.  There is some solid comic book humor that'll make you laugh and some great classic takes on our favorite heroes.  The big question in my mind was 'how much will Batman be in this film?'  The answer: about 40% of the time.  There is a gap in the middle where he doesn't have as much screen time, because in typical Batman fashion, he refuses to accompany the super heroes on their fools journey to another dimension, lead by a good Lex Luthor.  This turns out to be a very good idea on his behalf!

The Spectre Dc Showcase short was fun.  It was done in a very interesting retro-style and you can tell that the guys had WAY too much fun making it.  The feature on the next Dc Universe film Batman: Under the Red Hood was great.  This looks to be an amazing film!

This one needs to be seen on blu-ray.  Animation really shines in the high-definition format.  If you're a fan of Batman, Dc Comics or just want a fun toon to watch, pick this one up.  Its a really great addition to your library.

Halo Legends Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: This 8 episode anthology of 10-15 minute length each, explores the origin and historical events of the HALO universe, and various characters inhabiting the world. Like Animatrix and Batman Gotham Knight, each of the 8 episodes will be created by a separate prominent Japanese anime producer.

Review: Do you remember the Animatrix?  This is pretty much the same concept, with one major difference...the Matrix was an asinine concept to begin with and Halo is actually pretty cool.  If you're not familiar with the Halo Universe, which expands beyond video games into books and toys, then you're really missing out on the latest and greatest sci-fi experience.

I've never played Halo.  I know, thats blasphemy to video game fans, but I haven't.  I keep hearing about it on almost a daily basis.  Halo this or Halo that, and I never quite got what kept people so interested in the franchise.  Well, after watching these animated shorts, I have a good idea!  I'm a fan of other past epic sci-fi franchises like Alien and Predator, so I really get what they're doing here with the space marine-esque setting.

Halo looks amazing on blu-ray.  Most animation does, but this really pops!  Halo Legends has some anime cliche, we're not going to lie to you.  There are all of the typical silly things that they do...eyes wide open, still frames etc, but overally, this set is worth not only watching, but owning.  Its great for any Halo fan or fans of animation and sci-fi in general.

Review: The Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is a wonderful show for little ones that airs on the Disney Channel every morning.  Our daughter will sometimes will herself to wake up far too early just to watch it.   It features computer animated shorts with everyone's favorite Disney characters, like Mickey, Minnie, Donald and Pluto.

This newest DVD release, Minnie's Bow-Tique, takes little ones on a great adventure.  My five year old loved it.  She laughs and she talks through the entire feature.  Giggles galore when the boys are shopping for pretty bows.

This DVD features a few episodes from the tv show and a cool interactive feature that gives the release some more depth.  Its a very solid release and great for little ones up to ages 5 or 6.  If you want something that will actually interest them and teach them some good life lessons, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse is the way to go!  This one would make a great Easter basket gift!

Synopsis: Emmy Rossum (The Phantom of the Opera), Zach Gilford (TV's Friday Night Lights) and Ashley Springer (Teeth) head up a stellar cast including Ana Gasteyer (Mean Girls), Rooney Mara (A Nightmare on Elm Street), comedienne Sandra Bernhard (TV's Roseanne) and Alan Cumming (X2: X-Men United) in this captivating story of high school seniors at the crossroads of their adult lives. When a pompous actor tells good girl Alexa (Rossum) that she hasn't lived, she embarks on a bold journey that takes her to mysterious bad boy Johnny (Gilford). Envious, her shy best friend Ben (Springer) also dares to pursue Johnny, complicating Alexa's romance and pushing the boundaries among the three friends.

Review: The world is falling apart around you.  This "teen" film is causing a rift in the fabric of reality.  Ok, that may be a bit dramatic, but I was taken aback by how different 'Dare' is in the teen genre.  We usually get the archetypes in teen movies..the jock, the cheerleader, the nerd etc....I'm sorry, but if anyone reading this has lived real life there is a LOT more gray area than all that.

Dare goes where..well, no other teen movie would Dare.  Firstly, it case Alan Cummings, which is always a smart move in our book .  We love Alan.  He's always delightfully sinful and twisted, even when he's not trying to be.  The film is the debut for director Adam Salky and he does a great job.  This is a great DVD for anyone that wants to see a teen movie the way it should be!

Stargate SG-U 1.0 Blu-Ray Review

Stargate SG-U 1.0 Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From the creators of television’s longest running Sci-Fi series, “Stargate SG-1” comes a new story as “SGU 1.0” lands on two-disc Blu-ray and three-disc DVD February 9 from MGM Home Entertainment. Featuring the first 10 episodes, fans will have the opportunity to relive their favorite moments before all-new episodes air in the spring. With a winning combination of Stargate’s pedigree, award-winning cult favorite stars and a bold new look, “SGU 1.0” features appearances by original cast members. Plus meet a brand new all-star cast.

“SGU” is the story of a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians, fleeing an attack, finding themselves stranded billions of miles from Earth on an Ancient ship known as the Destiny. Locked on an unknown course, they must fight to survive and find a way home. The danger, adventure and hope they find on board the Destiny will reveal the heroes and villains among them.

Review: I remember seeing the original Stargate film in theaters back in the mid-1990s.  It was a great film back in the day, but I had no idea at the time that they would spin it off into so many television franchises.  I didn't think they would end up being successful, I really didn't, but low and behold its still going strong!

This blu-ray represents the first half of season one.  The second half will likely be released in May or June of this year and we'll cover that, as well.  The first half of season one started a bit slow, I won't lie to you.  There were some moments that were absolutely dull.  It picked-up, though and with the events of the mid-season finale in play, I'm really looking forward to finishing up the rest of season one.  If you've missed out, this is your chance to pick it up and get caught up.  If you already saw it and are a Stargate fan, well then I don't need to explain to you how much you need this blu-ray for your collection!

The high-definition transfer looks fantastic on this show.  The special effects really come through.  With an absence of good sci-fi shows, like Star Trek, Stargate is definately one to follow!

Cold Souls DVD Review

Cold Souls DVD Review

You can own this DVD today

Synopsis: Balancing a tightrope between deadpan humor and pathos, reality and fantasy collide in the surreal comedy Cold Souls, arriving on DVD March 2 from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment. Golden Globe Award winner** and Academy Award nominee Paul Giamatti (Sideways) stars as an actor named… Paul Giamatti. During rehearsals for Chekhov’s “Uncle Vanya,” he finds his soul growing so heavy under the weight of the material that his whole life begins to suffer. When Giamatti hears of a doctor who extracts and stores souls, he decides to undergo the procedure. Unburdened, Giamatti’s life becomes freewheeling, easygoing… and more intolerable than ever! He returns to the doctor demanding his old soul back, but a little snafu involving the Russian black market leads him on a harrowing journey that gives new meaning to the term “soul searching!”

Review: There is this certain genre of film that hits the mainstream, but still feels indie.  This new film, starring Paul Giamatti, is one of those films.  Cold Souls is a very Charlie Kauffman-esque flick that follows in the footsteps of groundbreaking work like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

This film takes a very serious tone and has very subtle undertones of humor.  The dark comedy that Giamatti puts forth is refreshing in a world of cliche filmmaking.  I won't give away more of the story than the synopsis provides, but suffice to say that this film is not only entertianing, but its unique.

The DVD special features will include deleted scenes and a documentary about the soul extractor, plus some trailers.  There has been some confusion about the release date, it was set to be February 2nd, but now seems to be pushed back to March 2nd on some places, like Amazon.  Wherever and whenever you find this film, watch it!  If you value your oddball movie collection,  you need to own this one.

Synopsis: Fun-loving model, actress and TV personality Bridget Marquardt is on a quest to discover the worlds most alluring beaches. In each episode, Bridget explores tantalizing shorelines and immerses herself in everything from early-morning sport fishing to late-night luaus. Cliff diving? Check. Bikini shopping? Check. Hanging out with beautiful locals? Absolutely! No food is off limits, no experience too intimidating. Bridget is all in, armed with an irresistible personality and unstoppable curiosity. From Australia to Ibiza, from Thailand to Turks & Caicos, Bridget takes you on an unforgettably glorious trip to the most sensual seaside locales around the globe.

Review: Bridget Marquardt is a model/actress that takes around the world checking out beaches.  Yep, thats this show.  To be honest, and I'm not trying to be rude, but the term actress should be taken with a grain of salt.  Bridget enjoys playing up the bimbo image with her "huge personality" and baby talk.  She definately utilizes her assets and those are most definately not her brains.  I say this with sadness, as I hate to see women objectifying themselves.  This reminds me of something that girls gone wild would put out.  Its like a sorority girl's guide to partying.

I'd like to give this show a better rating, but I personally couldn't stomach it.  I can definately see that if you're really shallow and like totally into beaches and stuff that you'd enjoy it, but honestly I don't get this show, myself.  I guess I just have too much respect for women.

Synopsis: Everyones favorite cat and mouse are back with 14 shorts from the popular cartoon series. Volume 3 finds Tom and Jerry engaging in some of their greatest chases ever!

Review: Who doesn't love Tom and Jerry?  These classic cartoons are full of energy and life the way shows now fall short.  This single disc release is full of 14 of the vintage shorts.  These are the shorts that many of us grew up watching in re-runs, before they deemed cartoons with violch ence not appropriate for children.  These toons show a lot of scratches and pencil lines..things long lost in cartoons today, but something that adds so much personality and flavor to the shows of yesterday.  These toons all involve the classic battle between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse, as they try to foil each other again and again.  Its so much fun to watch all of these again!

The only thing that really keeps this new release from being a full five our of four stars is the complete lack of extras on the disc.  Otherwise, its a home run!

Synopsis: Marisa Ventura (Jennifer Lopez) is a struggling single mom who works at a posh Manhattan hotel and dreams of a better life for her and her young son (Tyler Posey). One fateful day, hotel guest and senatorial candidate Christopher Marshall (Ralph Fiennes) meets Marisa and mistakes her for a wealthy socialite. After an enchanting evening together, the two fall madly in love. But when Marisa's true identity is revealed, issues of class and social status threaten to separate them. Can two people from very different worlds overcome their differences and live happily ever after? From acclaimed director Wayne Wang (Anywhere But Here) and co-starring Natasha Richardson, Stanley Tucci and Bob Hoskins, Maid in Manhattan is "Romantic! Funny! Uplifting!" (Neil Rosen, NY1).

Review: I'm only going to do a brief write-up on this one.  More than likely you've seen this romantic comedy already.  Its many years old and has been on DVD.  Its now being released on blu-ray high-definition, so we wanted to give it a shout out.

Maid in Manhattan is a very cute film.  Its one of Jennifer Lopez's better roles (though her best is in 'Out of Sight').  Its one of those uplifting romantic comedy date flicks that we know you guys love so much.

The question of the hour, what is it like in high-definition?  Well, its great actually.  It has minimal grain and the colors pop when applicable.  New York outdoor shots definately are different and you get a lot of definition on the faces (a little less make-up next time JLo!).  All in all this is a great release and a fun update to a very solid film.

Mona Lisa Smile Blu-Ray Review

Mona Lisa Smile Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Academy Award-winner Julia Roberts (Best Actress in a Leading Role, Erin Brockovich, 2000) leads an all-star cast featuring Kirsten Dunst, Julia Stiles, Maggie Gyllenhall and Marcia Gay Harden. Mona Lisa Smile is a funny, inspiring and uplifting film about an art history professor with a lot to teach about life and much to learn about romance.

Review: The film Mona Lisa Smile was a departure for Julia Roberts.  She doesn't typically do period film.  Set in the 1950s, the movie takes us into the life of a college art professor that challenges established society women at Wellesley college with women's lib ideology.  The reaction that she gets is quite negative at first and in the end drives her away.

There are three main characters in the film, other than Roberts.  Kirstin Dunst plays the steadfast traditionalist that badmouths her most of the film, but in the end she sees her way.  Julia Styles plays the woman with high potential that Roberts tries to take under her wing, but loses to the system and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays a loose girl that has a tendency to date married men and even professors.  In the end, everything is very realistic...there is no great change in the world, but only in the lives of a few individuals.  Even in Roberts.

The film has been out for many, many years on DVD, but has just now hit blu-ray!  The special features on the blu-ray include:

  • Art Forum

  • College Then and Now

  • What Women Wanted: 1953

  • Music Video - Elton John "The Heart of Every Girl"

  • The film looks great in the transfer to high-definition.  The detail on Julia Roberts really comes out.  Her skin tone and blemishes all come forward.  The film itself doesn't pop necessarily, due to the drab colors utilized, but it has very minimal grain and is an enjoyable watch.  If you don't own this one, blu-ray is the way to go.  If you do own it, and upgrade is in order!

Synopsis: Audrey Tautou (The Da Vinci Code, Amélie) shines in this intriguing portrait of the early life of Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, the orphan who would build a fashion empire and be known universally by her nickname, Coco. She journeys from a mundane seamstress job to boisterous cabarets to the opulent French countryside, possessing little more than her unwavering determination, unique style and visionary talent. Also starring Benoît Poelvoorde (In His Hands) and Alessandro Nivola (Junebug). Featuring lush settings and stunning costume design, Coco Before Chanel is the gripping and dramatic story of an icon who defied convention and defined the modern woman.

Review: CoCo Chanel has become a person of interest in recent years.  She was a visionary and a trail blazer in her time.  This new biopic is very unique, in that it actually stops where our general familiarity with her begins!  Portrayed by Audrey Tatou, Chanel is shown starting out life as an orphan and growing into the fasion designer that we came to know.

The pace of the film is slow at times, but the performanc by Tatou is absolutely delightful.  The movie is very inspiring and truly shows the difficult and sometimes impossible journey of a woman in the world.  This would be a great movie to watch if you are interested in Chanel, enjoy biopics or perhaps even in a women's studies class.  I definately recommend it.

The Last King of Scotland Blu-Ray Review

You can own this Blu-Ray today

Synopsis: As Ugandan dictator Idi Amin, Forest Whitaker gives "one of the greatest performances of modern movie history" (Wall Street Journal), one that the Associated Press calls "nothing short of Oscar(r) worthy." This is Amin's incredible story as seen through the eyes of Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy), a young Scotsman who becomes the volatile leader's personal physician, due in part to Amin's unexpected passion for Scottish culture -- Amin even proclaims himself "The Last King of Scotland". Seduced by Amin's charisma and blinded by decadence, Garrigan's dream life becomes a waking nightmare of betrayal and madness from which there is no escape. Inspired by real people and events, this gripping, suspenseful stunner is filled with performances you will never forget.

Review: This film is a little bit confusing for some.  Its thought that it may be a biopic, since Forest Whitaker portrays the real-life Idi Amin.  The tale is, however, fiction.  Nonetheless, its a fantastic tale of inspiration and courage.  The film also includes actor James McAvoy, who delivers a fantastic performance.

This film does tell some very true to life tales about life in Uganda and the horrors that are experienced there.  I wouldn't recommend this film for the faint of heart.

The transfer to blu-ray is a little sketchy on this release.  There are some areas that lack sharpness and have a glow..and other times we do get at little grain.  Overall the 1080p transfer does look good, though.  The audio quality is great on the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1.  Its not a terribly aggressive soundtrack, but it comes through well for the film.

Overall, its a great re-release and one that should definately grace your blu-ray library.

Synopsis: Singer. Rebel. Outlaw. Hero. With his driving freight-train chords, steel-eyed intensity and a voice as dark as the night, the legendary "Man in Black" revolutionized music, and forged his legacy as a genuine American icon. Golden Globe winners Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon star (and sing) as Johnny Cash and June Carter in this inspiring true story of one man's unwavering devotion to his sound, his message and the greatest love of his life.

Review: I think that many have seen this film.  If you haven't, then you really should.  Its one of the best biopics that I've seen.  Not only because Johnny Cash was a bad mother (may he rest in peace), but its just a great and inspiring story.

Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon have absolutely fantastic break-out performances in the film.  This really defined both of their careers as serious actors.  Hearing them sing the classic tunes and to see the life of Johnny played out with such dignity and respect is really a treat.

The real story here is the blu-ray release of this film.  The transfer is so refreshingly clean.  There are no obvious artifacts or edge enhancements present in the high-definition transfer whatsoever.  The audio is fantastic and all of the extras from the previous release are included.  This one is an absolute hit!

Synopsis: Two-time Academy Award® Winner Hilary Swank delivers an unforgettable performance as Amelia Earhart, the legendary American aviatrix who boldly flew into the annals of history. Richard Gere co-stars as her charismatic business partner and adoring husband George Putnam. Bound by ambition and love, their enduring marriage could not be broken by Amelia's determination to fly -- nor her passionate affair with Gene Vidal (Ewan McGregor). Equal parts gripping drama, stirring romance and epic adventure, Amelia will take your breath away and send your spirit soaring!

    • Audio: English: 5.1 Dolby Digital
    • Language: Dubbed: English / Subtitled: English, French & Spanish
    • Theatrical Aspect Ratio: Widescreen: 2.35:1

Review: In an era when adventure was meant only for men, Amelia Earhart was a poineer in aviation.  In this new biopic, Hilary Swank plays Earhart and her performance is fantastic.  I'm not generally a fan of Swank, but she really drove this one home.

The movie doesn't just chronicle her triumphant first trip across the Atlantic back in 1928.  In that trip, of course, she was just a passenger not a pilot, but it did make her the first woman to make the trip.  Her later 1937 flight around the world would be when she would eventually disappear.  The movie takes her entire life into account and gives us a great biopic on this fantastic woman.

The DVD is great for those without a DVD player.   The blu-ray is definately the way to go, if you have the technology.  The high-definition is the most enjoyable way to watch this and any film.  I recommend this for anyone that enjoys biopics or even just a good romance movie.

Synopsis: A secret service agent becomes obsessed with destroying a counterfeiter responsible for his partner's death.

Review:  This film does a great job of showing L.A.  Not the L.A. that you see in the movies on TV.  You know the one...the one thats just the Hollywood Hills and Beverly Hills.  No, this is gritty, dirty and gruff Los Angeles.  At the core this is a cops and robbers movie.  Its one of those epic crime dramas that was really never given the credit that it deserves in it's day.

This film was released seven years ago on DVD, so I had high hopes for the transfer over to blu-ray.  The original film was released back in the mid-1980s, so we weren't sure how it'd go, but I'm pleased with the transfer.  It looks great.

To Live and Die in L.A. should be seen by anyone that enjoys crime drama.  This film has complex characters and unabashed violence.  Its Friedkin's masterpiece and should defintely be a part of your collection!

Review: The 'Air Bud' films have been very popular for Disney.  The success of the original 'Air Bud' spawned this cool sequel and eventually the 'Buddies' movies that have so engrossed my own children, and probably your own!  Disney has been going back and beefing up old releases with special editions lately.  This time Air Bud: Golden Receiver gets the treatment!

This time around, Air Bud plays football.  Its another great Disney animal-themed film.  This film does feature the all-too famous buddies as game commentators!  Its a pretty outrageous film, but its full of fun and of course, evil Russian circus owners.  Is there any other kind?  Air Bud manages to get out of trouble and save the day..and the game!

The DVD set comes with a special collectible sports whistle!  Thats a ton of fun for kids, not so much for parents!  This would be a great item to hang on the wall or use outside!  I stress outside.  This is a really, really fun movie and we cannot recommend it enough for any child!
