Conan The Adventurer: Season Two, Part 2 DVD Review

Synopsis: Produced by Sunbow, the animation group that brought you Transformers and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero, Conan The Adventurer follows Conan and his friends on their quest to rescue Conan's family from an evil spell, cast by the Serpent Man wizard Wrath-Amon. These episodes find Conan helping out a mysterious city led by an evil ruler, falling under an evil spell, and learning how to read! Conan The Adventurer originally aired in Saturday morning syndication beginning in 1992 transitioning to a daily airing throughout 1993 in the second season. Hasbro also launched a branded toy line in 1992. The comic book line has been in print 40 years.

Review: Conan is one of those fantasy characters that has gotten an interesting treatment over the years.  This cartoon, for example, was a kid-friendly version of the savage warrior.  For that reason, many Conan fans have shunned the show.  There is a faction of people, however, were turned onto the mythology through this cartoon, so many of us do still enjoy it greatly.  Plus, its a fun way to let your kids experience a unique and fun world.  This DVD set wraps up the series, released by Shout Factory over the past year or so.  Its a joy to own it all and this is a great show that holds up well, as do all of the Sunbow produced shows.

The Divide Blu-ray/DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: Prepare yourself for the unrated movie experience that critics are calling one of the most graphic and extreme end-of-the-world shockers of our time: As nuclear warheads rain down on Manhattan, nine strangers - including Lauren German (HOSTEL: PART II), Milo Ventimiglia ("Heroes"), Courtney B. Vance ("Law & Order: Criminal Intent"), Ashton Holmes ("Revenge") and Rosanna Arquette (PULP FICTION) - barricade themselves in their apartment building's bunker-like basement controlled by the unhinged superintendent (a stunning performance by Michael Biehn of ALIENS and TOMBSTONE). But within days, supplies dwindle, tempers flare and the trapped survivors will be overcome by treachery, madness, sexual torment and savage violence. What follows is intense. It is raw. And it is all brutally, horrifyingly real. This is THE DIVIDE.

Review: The Divide was kinda marketed like a horror flick, so thats what we were expecting going in, and while there are some horrific elements to the film, its most definately more of a fantasy/drama/thriller than a horror film.   The premise is basically what happens when a group of people hold up in a basement after nuclear fallout..what happens to this little makeshift society after the end of the world?  The answer?   Nothing good....nothing at all good.  This one will shock, horrify and challenge you.  Its a fantastic watch.

Synopsis: It’s madness in the meadow with Shaun the Sheep and his flock of mischievous merrymakers! Shaun expertly stops the pigs from running amuck and turning the farm into a porky paradise. He amuses his friends when he falls head over hoof for a beautiful stranger, and demonstrates what happens when curiosity gets the sheep after a hot air balloon lands and causes mayhem in the meadow… From the farm, to outer space and everywhere in between, Shaun and his barnyard buddies know how to have a woolly good time!

Review: This DVD boxed set continues the claymation adventures of Shaun the Sheep with seven episodes from the series.  This great british show is a spinoff of the famous Wallace and Gromit TV show.  Shaun is goofy as ever in this DVD set of adventures.  Our preschooler loves this eries and we're certain yours will too.  This one is family safe fun.

The Super Hero Squad Show: The Infinity Gauntlet Vol. 3 DVD Review

Synopsis: With Galactus defeated and Dr. Doom moping behind bars, Super Hero City is finally safe - that is, until Thanos goes in search of the powerful Infinity Gauntlet! Although they are without their comrade-in-laughter, Silver Surfer, the Super Hero Squad - Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine and Falcon - must once again come together to take on any villainy that threatens the peace and safety of the Marvel universe.

Review: I'm a huge fan of the Marvel Universe, and all of the cartoons within, but I hadn't gotten a chance to check out the Superhero Squad as of yet.  Low and behold, this great DVD comes out and I see several episodes of the series, which can only be described as hilarious.   They basically take all of the funny comic book quirks and make a slew of great puns, jokes, and over exaggurations that are fantastic inside jokes to any comic book fan.  I watched this one with my kids and they LOVED it.  I would definately recommend getting this new volume and all past volumes to collect all the seasons to date of this series.

Victor Victoria DVD Review

Synopsis: A man impersonating a woman on stage? Piece of cake. But a woman whose livelihood depends on pretending to be a man who pretends to be a woman? Now you’ve got problems! You’ve also got laughs when Julie Andrews plays Victor and Victoria in this clever delight, from filmmaker Blake Edwards, boasting a marvelous Academy Award®-winning* score by Henry Mancini and Leslie Bricusse. Robert Preston plays a cabaret performer who devises the gender-bender stage act. Farcically complicating matters are James Garner as a mobster suspecting Victor is a Victoria and Lesley Ann Warren as a short-fused floozy. Of this movie’s seven Oscar® nominations*, three went to Golden Globe® Winner Andrews (Actress), National Board of Review Award winner Preston (Supporting Actor) and Warren (Supporting Actress)

Review: I never got a chance to see Victor Victoria until the Warner Archive released it onto DVD.  I was, of course, familiar with the idea of the film through pop culture, but I'd never been witness to Julie Andrews' fantastic performance.  This film is delightful, charming and funny.  I found the music to be great, the acting (and actors) above par.   This gender-bending vintage film is sure to please.  We highly recommend checking it out.  This is your chance to own the film, available only online from wbshop.com (see our direct link above).

Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy Volume 2 DVD Review

Synopsis: History breaks comedic ground as Larry the Cable Guy takes a zany spin around the U.S. From the Oregon Trail to the Grand Canyon, from crossing the Delaware to searching for California s gold, Larry's signature persona delivers offbeat America, with stories of real history and loads of down-home fun. Larry "gits-r-done," as he visits iconic sites, engaging people along the way. Only in America with Larry the Cable Guy brings fun-loving "country" to an historic level. Disc 1: Larry Deep Fries Everything / Larry Digs for Gold / Larry in Hillbilly Country / Larry is a Logger. Disc 2: Larry Goes North / Larry is the Sheriff / Larry Steps Into The Ring / Larry is Amish. Disc 3: Larry Beefs Up / Larry Cuts the Cheese / Larry & the Superpig.

Review: Larry the Cable guy is quite the character.  His hillbilly character is super popular.  For those that "get" his schtick, its fantastic.  Larry is actually from our home town where he used to be a call-in radio personality.   He's a very cool guy and does a great job of personifying the worst stereotypes of a Nebraskan hick.  This show puts Larry's character into all kinds of absurd situations.  This DVD set rounds out the episodes from season one!  We cannot wait to check out season two and see what he has in store for us.

Skin Deep DVD Review

Synopsis: Zach is in love. It’s the best thing ever to happen to him. It’s the worst thing ever to happen to him. Because – for now at least – the person Zach loves most is himself. Writer/director Blake Edwards combines slapstick with battle-of-the-sexes brio in this gag-infused tale of a womanizer who finally grows up. John Ritter plays mid-life-crazy Zach, ready to win back his ex-wife…if he can somehow give up his randy habits. Featuring wall-to-wall verbal and physical wit, Skin Deep tops itself with a scene that, even today, remains glowingly funny and original. “I can’t describe it to you. I can’t show it to you,” Joel Siegel of ABC-TV’s Good Morning America said, “but this film has one of the biggest laughs at the movies.”

Review:  John Ritter stars as a lovable man-whore in this fantastic vintage film.   This one is available only online through the Warner Archive.  This one is a fantastic comedy, and one that I'd never had the pleasure of seeing.  I don't think this one has ever even been released onto DVD.  If you own the VHS, here is your chance to upgrade.  If you've never seen this one, give it a try.  The late Ritter turns in a fantastic and original performance.

American Dad!: Volume Seven DVD Review

Synopsis: It's time once again to let it all hang out with an all-new volume of animated outrageousness! From the disturbed comic minds of Mike Barker, Matt Weitzman, and Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, comes the always insane adventures of CIA operative Stan Smith and his wonderfully twisted family. In the 100th episode, Hayley elopes with Jeff! Other episodes include Stan on jury duty, Steve walking in on his amorous parents, Roger dating Steve's best friend, and yet another AD Christmas classic. Plus, there are serial killers, Turkish amphetamines, and evil clones - so, you know, the usual!

Review: American Dad!  From the sick and twisted mind of the great Seth MacFarlane.  Is everything they produce on the show funny?  No.  In fact several episodes of this series have been a miss, but was we celebrate this new DVD release, it contains episodes that are pretty much all wins.  The family of a right-wing conservative nut-job with a live-in alien has really hit a stride and the humor is setting in nicely.  Any fan of the show will be pleased to own this.  We definately are.

Bob's Burgers: Season 1 DVD Review

Synopsis: Smart laughs and irreverent fun are always on the menu at Bob's Burgers. Bob Belcher's family-run restaurant would be a big success if not for one thing - his family! Oldest daughter, Tina, can't control her raging hormones. Middle son, Gene, promotes the restaurant by wearing a burger costume, but forgets to take it off to pee. And little Louise tells her class that Bob's burgers are made from human flesh! This quirky comedy will leave you hungry for more.

Review: Fox is now infamous for fantastic adult-flavored animation.  One of the newer series that they released was Bob's Burgers.   You know the Simpsons..Family Guy...and now Bob and his absurd family.  The dynamic is familiar, dysfunctional and bizarre people that are all living together...except that these people serve you food.  Ugh.  The show definately has its laughs, although perhaps no on par with some of the other Fox shows, this one definately shows promise.

Review: I had never seen Dark Shadows, although I've heard much about it over the past few years.  Obviously we've all heard of it now, since Tim Burton and Johnny Depp have paired to film their tribute film.  The easiest way to describe the show is that it was bascially a supernatural soap opera.  These two DVDs are great releases that have come out to showcase the episodes for someone that wants to either experience the show, but not invest in the entire series and or just relive some of the fun without too much of an investment.  These DVDs include samplings of key episodes and I have to say that I enjoyed it so much, that I think I'm going to have to invest in the complete series DVD set now!  We definately recommend..its a lot of fun.

The Iron Lady Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: THE IRON LADY is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Two-time Oscar® winner Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male-dominated world.

Review: You can never go wrong with Meryl Streep, right?  Right!  When we heard that she was playing the late, great Margaret Thatcher, we knew it'd be a home run..and the Iron Lady is just that.  Streep does her usual and puts her all into accurately portraying this powerful and legendary leader.  We found the film to be not only charming, but riveting and dramatic.  This one is not to be missed.

Synopsis: It's 2314 and no one is allowed to live past age of 30, but a few have escaped the new world order to try to reach Sanctuary where they can live peacefully to old age. Gregory Harrison stars as Logan, a Sandman who rebels and joins other Runners as they try to avoid being captured and deal with an unknown world outside the City of Domes.

Review: At long last this legendary 1970s TV show gets a DVD release!  This one has been thrown around at conventions for years amongst sci-fi nerds on bad tv-recorded dubs and burns.  This one was spun-off of the cult film of the same name into a 14 episode series that..well, I'll just say it..it ruled.  This was pre-80s, so no Blade Runner or Aliens to have changed the sci-fi landscape as of then.  This one, if you enjoyed it while you were young, is still a huge win and very entertaining.  If you've never seen it before, but enjoy retro-TV, then you will still love it.  We greatly enjoyed seeing these episodes in clear and fantastic picture..probably looking better than they did when they originally aired!

The Witches of Oz Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Dorothy Gale (Paulie Rojas) is a simple girl in rural Kansas who writes children's books based on the land of Oz created by her grandfather. Her mundane life is turned upside down when she receives an offer from a big New York agency to represent her books. In New York, Dorothy soon realizes her books, and her grandfather's stories, are based in reality. The magical world of Oz and all of its inhabitants are very real and they are coming to New York City! Dorothy and her friends are the only ones who can stop the evil Wicked Witch of the West and her plans for global domination. Also starring Billy Boyd, Sean Astin, Ethan Embry, Mia Sara, Lance Henriksen, Christopher Lloyd.

Review: This show originally aired as a miniseries about a real-life writer (Dorothy) and an epic tale that sweeps her into the mysterious and magical land of Oz.  Now, this one has a great premise and starts out well.  If you enjoy somewhat b-class campy acting then you'll love this one.  Its not a serious or dark series, but rather kid friendly and epic...much like Narnia.

Sleeping Beauty DVD Review

Sleeping Beauty DVD Review

Synopsis: Jane Campion presents Sleeping Beauty, a fascinating depiction of a young woman's reckless decent into a shocking world of erotic desires. Lucy (Emily Browning in a breakthrough performance) is a young university student possessed by a kind of radical passivity, letting coin tosses decide random sexual encounters and enduring her menial jobs with an uncomplaining patience. After answering an ad in the student newspaper for a lingerie waitress, Lucy is secretly initiated into the job of a Sleeping Beauty, for which she is sedated and given in absolute submission to her clients. As this unnerving experience begins to bleed into her daily life, Lucy develops the courage to break the spell and discover what happens to her while she sleeps. First-time director Julia Leigh creates a bold cinematic vision with her shocking retelling of the classic myth that poses its heroine as a rarified sex-worker confronting ideas of feminine sexuality with bravado and precision.

Review: This movie is a phenominal arthouse feature that has Emily Browning (Sucker Punch) playing a detached girl working in the sexual trade.  She isn't a hooker, but rather an erotic model of sorts that gets into a bizarre fetish world of sleeping nude for money..again with no sex allowed.   This film contains a lot of nudity, drawn out scenes and fantastic dialogue.  If you watch indie film, these things won't come as a surprise to you, but the average movie viewer may be taken aback.  We highly HIGHLY recommend watching this one.  Its moving and fascinating.

Into the Abyss Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In his fascinating exploration of a triple homicide case in Conroe, Texas, master filmmaker Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) probes the human psyche to explore why people kill-and why a state kills. Through intimate conversations with those involved, including 28-year-old death row inmate Michael Perry (scheduled to die within eight days of appearing on-screen), Herzog achieves what he describes as "a gaze into the abyss of the human soul." Herzog's inquiries also extend to the families of the victims and perpetrators as well as a state executioner and pastor who've been with death row prisoners as they've taken their final breaths. As he's so often done before, Herzog's investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory.

Review: This documentary of a case of mass murder is rather abstract, but wildly interesting.  Its a dark and chaotic look into the world of killers.  The blu-ray is rather abstract..there is a lot of art to the way its produced, this is definately not a boring documentary.  No droning on with the occasional inserted soundbite.  No, this one was crafted.   We found this to be very entertaining and well worth the watch for anyone interested in the subject.

S.O.B. DVD Review

Synopsis: Felix Farmer’s (Richard Mulligan) latest movie flops – and lots of Hollywood types spring into action. Agents are called. Lawyers are retained. Statements are issued. It’s what master comedy director Blake Edwards calls “Standard Operating Bull,” the subject of his gleefully satiric S.O.B. Julie Andrews is a wholesome superstar about to alter her image…radically. Aiding and abetting the madness are William Holden, Robert Preston, Robert Vaughn, Shelley Winters, Loretta Swit and more. Dialogue crackles like fat in a fire, gags range from dead-on deadpan to comedic broadsides, insights bristle and sting. Nothing standard here: S.O.B. is extraordinary.

Review: We love vintage film here at the Legion.  I had never heard of S.O.B. before it was released onto on demand DVD by the Warner Archive this month.  This one was made by the director of the Pink Panther and serves as a fantastic satire on Hollywood and the maniacs within.  The film focuses mainly on Felix, a producer that has recently fallen from grace.  A good portion of the movie has him trying, unsuccessfully, to kill himself off.  Yep, they make suicide amusing.  He later finds some dealings to get involved with, but twist after turn and things go crazy again!  This one was nonstop funny, we really enjoyed it and highly recommend it.

In his fourth (and Grammy Nominated) full-length special, Patton covers a range of topics from how hipsters make the Spam museum sad, the greatness of sweatpants and revisits his attack on KFC Famous Bowls.

Review: Patton Oswalt is one of the funniest stand-up comics around.  His new DVD, Finest Hour, brings us into Patton's new world as a father.  Not a lot has changed, but some of his perspectives are more hilarious, especially to parents.  Don't get me wrong, this isn't daddy comedy, this one is risque and edgy and an amazing watch for anyone looking to laugh.

Review: Iron Man used to be for nerds only.  He became mainstream with the Robert Downey, Jr. helmed film that came out a few years back and the subsequent sequel.  In fact, the Avengers Assemble movie, which stars Iron Man in the lead, just banked a record 200,000,000 at the box office this past opening weekend!  Marvel is hotter than ever and these new anime series on DVD are well-timed releases.  Iron Man translates well to anime and Stark's persona is well portarayed.  The events in this series could easily fall in line with the film series as a continuation and we're loving every minute of it!

Synopsis: When two young missionaries (Brittania Nicol, Henry Garrett) head to Scotland, they are initially charmed by the locals in the town of Tressock, and agree to become the local Queen of the May and Laddie for the annual town festival. But the couple is not prepared for the frightening consequences of their decision, and the very disturbing secrets they are about to discover about Tressock's seemingly friendly townspeople. Written and Directed by Robin Hardy, The Wicker Tree also features Graham McTavish, Jacqueline Leonard, Honeysuckle Weeks, Clive Russell with Christopher Lee, star of the original The Wicker Man.

Review: This film was not what I expected at ALL.   This one is a relative of the previous film the Wicker Man, but it really comes off more like a dark comedy with satire prevelant and throughout.  The film centers around a pure little converted christian couple traveling to Scotland.  They get caught up in some local insanity and very quickly things begin to degenerate.  This one will offend if you're super religious.  I found it to be rather humorous and a great satire about faith and fate.

Planet Egypt DVD Review

Synopsis: It was the world's most important ancient civilization and lasted longer than any other. In this exciting four-part miniseries, HISTORY explores the technology, culture, religion, wars and peace that unified Egypt for 3,000 years. Planet Egypt investigates Egypt's legacy through portraits of its most influential Pharaohs: King Narmer, who united more than 40 regional tribes into the first Egyptian civilization; Thutmose III, who expanded and secured Egypt's borders; Amnenhotep III and his revolutionary son Akhenaten, who attempted to break the power of the priests and reorganize the traditional role of religion; and Ramsses II, the great builder of temples and tombs who devoted his life to the cult of death. Threaded throughout are intimate details of typical Egyptian daily life. From feats of engineering and the most ambitious construction projects in history, to its obsession with life, death and immortality, the amazing story of ancient Egypt still astounds us today.

Review: We love historical documentary here at the Legion.  Egyptology has been a fascination of ours for a very long time and there are plenty of specials to go around.  You get features on the pyramids..some on tut..some on other pharoahs..even on sex in ancient Egypt.  What makes Planet Egypt special is that it covers such a broad range of topics throughout its four parts that its absolutely definitive.  This one paints a picture of ancient Egypt that is both dynamic and enlightening.  We really enjoyed this one and we know you will too!

Marvel Anime: X-Men - Complete Series DVD Review

Synopsis: The X-Men reunite after the death of a teammate in order to track down Hisako Ichiki (Armor), a missing teenage girl in Northern Japan. There, the X-Men encounter the fanatical anti-mutant group, the U-Men, and discover what was important enough for Xavier to bring them back together. The answer is something that could potentially bridge the gap between mutants and humans, or tear the two species apart forever.

Review: We love the X-Men here at the Legion.  In fact, I grew up during the heyday of the X-Men during the late 1980s and early 1990s.  I used to read the comics heavily and have watched all three televised cartoons religiously.   This new DVD is a collection of the first season of an anime that airs on the G4 network.  I wasn't quite sure how the characters would translate and whether I'd dig this, but I really do.  One nice bonus was Steve Blum voicing Wolverine.  Blum also voiced Wolverine in "Wolverine and the X-Men", the most recent X-Men cartoon series.  The sequences and animation are very classic anime and the storyline is fantastic, emotional and has some depth.  This one is a must-own for any comic book fan.

Young Goethe in Love DVD Review

Synopsis: Germany 1772 the young and tumultuous Johann Goethe (Alexander Fehling) aspires to be a poet; but after failing his law exams, he is sent by his father (Henry Huebchen) to a sleepy provincial court to mend his ways. Unsure of his talent and eager to prove himself, Goethe soon wins the praise and friendship of his superior Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu). But then Lotte (Miriam Stein) enters his life and nothing is the same as before. However, the young lovers are unaware that her father has already promised Lotte s hand to another man.

Review: This film centers around a forbidden love affair in the real life of famed German author Goethe, who is most famous for his pinnacle work, "Faust".   This is the film for the true hopeless romantic.  Two people that cannot be together and against all strive to still show each other their feelings.  Reality is too strong for them to stay together, but you're left with a resounding feeling of their passion.  Forget that Twilight crap...this one is a must see.

This season also stars some of the biggest weapons ever featured on Top Shot such as the Gatling and Hotchkiss Mountain Guns. Colby Donaldson returns as host for the competition that takes a page from history. Includes all 12 episodes on 4 discs, plus Contestant Bios and Behind the Bullet!

Review: Top Shot is a competition on the History Channel that tests the marksmanship of its contestants.  This one has been going for a few seasons and they've gotten rather creative with the challenges.   I'm not a huge gun fan, but the challenges are certainly impressive at times.  They utilize the slow motion camera technology to make the impact of each hit all the more phenominal.  If you're into shooting, then you'll LOVE this show.  This season was the best yet.
