The Howling Reborn Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In this chilling reboot of the '80s horror classic, Landon Liboiron of ''Terra Nova'' stars as high school senior Will Kidman, whose infatuation with a beautiful classmate (Lindsey Shaw of ''Pretty Little Liars'' and ''10 Things I Hate About You'') begins to trigger certain teenage animal instincts. But when a mysterious woman (Ivana Milicevic of Casino Royale) with a shocking secret re-enters his life, Will learns that he is heir to a powerful line of werewolves. Now he finds he has a choice to make: succumbing to his primal nature or turning against his own. In order to fight the destiny of his legacy and save the girl of his dreams, he must battle not only his growing blood lust but an army of fearsome beasts hell-bent on killing us all. Tonight, the full moon rises. The horror begins anew. This is THE HOWLING REBORN.

Review: The Howling Reborn is the latest in a long line of films in the Howling franchise.  They are seemingly unconnected, except that they are all werewolf tales.  This new feature feels a lot more like Twilight teen-angst, tween fueled drama fest.  The main character looks like Harry Potter and the whole film is rather cheesy.  To be honest, there is a genre for this, it just doesn't appeal to me personally as a viewer.  I think a young audience that is into the whole Twilight thing would really dig this one.

Attack the Block Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From the producers of Shaun of the Dead, Attack the Block is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen street gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing project into a sci-fi battleground, the low-income apartment complex into a fortress under siege. And it turns a crazy mix of tough street kids into a team of kick ass heroes. It’s inner city versus outer space and it’s going to explode.

Review: From the two goobers that brought you fantastic comedy like Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead comes Attack the Block.  In fact, one of those guys is in THIS film, as well.  You may know the other one as Simon Pegg, an actor that has gotten a good amount of exposure thanks to the relaunch of the Star Trek films in which he plays Scotty.  Attack the Block is an urban London look at an alien invasion.  The film is rather deadpan, but hilarious at times.  Its well paced and definately has the action, funny characters and great lines that make this one a fun time.

American Pickers: Volume Two DVD Review

Synopsis: In small towns, and along America's back roads, treasures are waiting to be uncovered- valuable relics from our history that are hidden in junk piles, buried in barns and stacked in garages. It takes experts to find them - and turn rust to riches. American Pickers follows two of the most skilled "pickers"- Mike Wolfe, owner of Antique Archaeology, and his business partner, Frank Fritz- as they hunt down objects with historical, collectible and pop culture value that have been long forgotten by their owners. Along the way, they meet people whose own stories open a window into American lives and history. In this collection, Mike and Frank try to strike a deal with NASCAR Champion Ryan Newman, explore the appropriately named Pickens, South Carolina and try to buy a 300-pound boot.

Review:  American Pickers is a complicated show for us.  We really enjoy collecting and picking..we're pickers ourselves, but the two hosts are so utterly annoying.  They're just douchey to the nth degree.  That being said, the show is still great.  They find a lot of amazing items that they can resell...although it seems like gas station signs and old bicycles are the extent of their personal knowlege, lol.  The second season of American Pickers includes 22 episodes.  This volume 2 DVD includes only the first 8 of those.

Pawn Stars: Volume Three DVD Review

Synopsis: Venture inside the one family-run pawn shop in Las Vegas, where three generations of men use their sharp-eyed skills to carefully assess the value of items ranging from the obscure to the historic. In PAWN STARS, the rarely tactful and always confrontational Harrison family finds the gems and busts the fakes, all in hopes of making the biggest profit possible.

Review: Pawn Stars is one of the favorite shows in our house.  We watch it religiously and we own the first two seasons on DVD.  We're collectors and its great to learn so much about the various artifacts and collectibles that come through their Vegas-based pawn shop.  This DVD set is titled volume three, because it is NOT the complete third season of the show, which disappoints us a bit.  This DVD only has the first 16 episodes of the season, which accounts for just a little more than half of what is out there.   We hope that they'll release another volume collecting the rest of the season soon!   This season had more of the great same old with Rick, the Old Man, Chumlee and Big Haus!

Review: Top Shot is a very original show that airs on the History Channel.  This DVD release represents season two of the show.  The formula is the same as season one, a bunch of contendors that live in a house and take part in various challenges that prove they are great marksmen.  The show consists of teams up until a certain point, where only one can win and be declared the Top Shot.  The show is a good watch as the challenges get more and more difficult!  They do a great job of dramatizing each shot with the high-def camera that does visually stunning slow motion!  If you enjoyed the first season, this one will be an easy watch for you!

Review: CatDog is a hilarious animated show from Nickelodeon that aired back in the late 1990s.  This DVD release contains the first half of season one, with the second half due in 2012.  Catdog was a bizarre hybrid creature that was outcast and lives outside of town, often getting into crazy situations with a great supporting cast of insane animals.  The kids love it and its so fun to be able to share this toon with them for the first time.  This release from Shout Factory is fantastic.  The video transfer looks great on all ten episodes and we can't wait to collect the rest of the series.

Review: This is a weird frickin' movie.  I mean that..I don't say it lightly.  Firstly, if clowns are an issue for you, DON'T watch this one!  This is a bizarre spanish film about a few clowns that become soldiers.  This a barrage of violent imagery and crazy situations.  This is without a doubt the weirdest thing I've seen in a long time.  I don't even know what to say about it, lol.  If you're looking for something different..that is definately it.

Rise and Fall of Margaret Thatcher DVD Review

Synopsis: Bringing together three outstanding BBC productions, The Rise and Fall of Margaret Thatcher provides a unique insight into the fascinating life of one of the most significant political figures in British history. The Long Walk to Finchley begins on the night Thatcher met her husband-to-be Denis. The film shows Margaret's steely determination to get selected to a "winnable" Tory seat in the fifties and imagines what might have gone on behind-the-scenes during her ten-year struggle to gain a seat in Parliament. The Falkland's Play portrays the backroom story of Thatcher's war. A play that was once deemed too controversial to produce provides a gripping account of how Margaret Thatcher and her government faced one of biggest crises in foreign affairs. Finally, Margaret examines Thatcher's last days in power. The film paints a detailed and compelling portrait of one of the most formidable characters in British politics. Showing at once her strengths and fatal flaws, the film ultimately reveals that the very aspects of her character that helped her secure power were also the ones that ensured her downfall.

Review: This BBC DVD collects three of the best productions on Margaret Thatcher.  These are all very good features in their own rights.  Our favorite is definately 'The Long Walk to Finchley', but all three films do a wonderful job of showing various stages of the legendary Thatcher's life and tribulations.  Her character, her adversity and her achievements are gloriously showcased in this DVD set.  This one is a must watch for anyone interested in Thatcher or political history in general.

Pearl Jam: Twenty DVD Review

Synopsis: In honor of Pearl Jam s twentieth anniversary, Academy Award®-winning director and music journalist Cameron Crowe created a definitive portrait of the seminal band carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely and never-before-seen footage, plus 24 hours of recently shot concert and interview footage. Pearl Jam Twenty chronicles the years leading up to the band s formation, the chaos that ensued soon after their rise to megastardom, their step back from center stage, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. Told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, the film is carved from over 1,200 hours of rarely seen and never before seen footage spanning the band s career. Pearl Jam Twenty is the definitive portrait of Pearl Jam: part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists.

Review: Pearl Jam is one of the few bands to survive the 1990s and the grunge movement.  Eddie Vedder has been a source of controversy many times in his career and this has really kept the band more interesting.  They were very outspoken during the Bush administration and about their feelings on the war and have stayed relevant against all odds.  This documentary, done by the great Cameron Crowe and it shows!  The documentary is in-depth, personal and intimate.  Its a great look at the band with a wonderful mixture of their music and backstage moments and interviews.

DVD includes the feature-length documentary plus 26 minutes of never-before-seen bonus features.

Synopsis: The gloriously ribald Scot, Craig Ferguson takes to the stage in this all-new comedy special for a night of jokes and storytelling peppered with the kinds of words he's not allowed to say on network TV. Before a hootin' and hollerin' Nashville audience, Ferguson tackles every topic from celebrity sex scandals to booze to his own hilarious heavy metal past.

Review: Craig Ferguson was first introduced to American audiences on the Drew Carey Show.  Then, he got his own talk show and now he has been doing a bit more stand-up comedy. Craig's act is hilarious.  He delves into a variety of topics, from his early days in Scotland and coming to America.  His parents..his alcoholism and his early career.  The comedy is fresh, raunchy and fantastic!  We absolutely love it and if you have any sense of humor whatsoever you will too!

Robotech: The Complete Original Series DVD Review

Synopsis: ROBOTECH is a sweeping science-fiction anime epic of humans defending their home world against alien domination. The saga is told through the eyes of characters caught up in a series of wars that erupts when a mysterious spacecraft crash-lands on Earth at the turn of the millennium. The secrets of alien knowledge aboard this vessel were unlocked, leading to the development of "Robotechnology" and the creation of a vast arsenal of robotic "mecha" to defend the Earth against the alien threats that would eventually strike to lay claim to the mysterious power source known as "protoculture."

Carl Macek’s groundbreaking sci fi epic has enthralled audiences since it first appeared on American television in 1985. One of the first-ever anime imports, this saga spans three generations of mankind’s fight for freedom.

ROBOTECH: THE COMPLETE SERIES contains the remastered versions of all 85 episodes from the three Robotech Wars: THE MACROSS SAGA, THE ROBOTECH MASTERS and THE NEW GENERATION.

Review: Robotech or Robotic Technology was an anime series that came to America in the 1985.  It was a bizarre situation, because what the show actually was is a mixture of three different anime series that already existed in Japan re-edited into a whole new show!  Crazy, right?  WRONG!  It was the best.

Now, we get the ENTIRE series on DVD thanks to A&E, who picked up the distribution rights to the series.   This release has all of the episodes, including Robotech: The Movie and Robotech II: The Sentinels.   This great DVD boxed set is packed in slim cases with great artwork from the show.

This three season series had humankind fighting in the three Robotech wars over the most powerful energy source, Protoculture.  We get to see the Macross Saga, Robotech Masters and the New Generation.  The animation is very typical of anime from the early 1980s.  The voice acting is solid and the show still holds up for those that saw it as a kid.  For many of us this one was our first introduction to anime, the format that has taken over America over the past decade!    This show is legendary and it was such a treat to see it again.

The special features on this DVD set include: The Making of Robotech Documentary – NEW to DVD, Robotech Music Videos – NEW to DVD, Robotech Overview – NEW to DVD, Alternate versions of select Robotech episodes – NEW to DVD, Robotech: The Movie supplementals (including several sequences NEW to DVD), Macross Original Pilot – Parts 1, 2 and 3 (Parts 2 and 3 NEW to DVD), Promotional reel of Robotech Launch in China – NEW to DVD, Over 2.5 hours of deleted scenes, Robotech: The Sentinels (with optional audio commentary), Robotech: The Sentinels promotional video, Macross Original Pilot – Parts 1, 2 and 3, Mospeada Original Pilot – Part 1, Original opening and closing animations, Galaxy of the Stars - Harmony gold promotional reel, Toy Commercial and Videogame presentation reels, International clips for all three Robotech Wars, A vast stills appendix containing character bios, model sheets, pre-production art, comic book covers, and merchandise galleries And much, much more!

Bad Teacher (Unrated Edition) Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Some teachers just don't give an F. For example, there's Elizabeth (Cameron Diaz). She's foul-mouthed, ruthless, and inappropriate. She drinks, she gets high, and she can't wait to marry her meal ticket and get out of her bogus day job. When she's dumped by her fiance, she sets her plan in motion to win over a rich, handsome substitute (Justin Timberlake) - competing for his affections with an overly energetic colleague, Amy (Lucy Punch). When Elizabeth also finds herself fighting off the advances of a sarcastic, irreverent gym teacher (Jason Segel), the consequences of her wild and outrageous schemes give her students, her coworkers, and even herself an education like no other.

Review: Its not often that a comedy comes along that really hits the mark.  They either miss completely, being totally cliche or they are over-hyped coughBRIDESMAIDScough.  The exception is this one...Bad Teacher.  Cameron Diaz masterfully plays the opposite of her usual role..she is a rotten and bitter golddigger.  Jason Segel plays his usual lovable oaf role and he does it well.  He delivers a lot of the great lines and plenty of laughs.  Justin Timberlake also does a fine job in an atypical role for him.  This one is funny without being too over the top raunchy.  Its definately recommended.

Father Of Ivention Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Two-time Academy Award(R) winner Kevin Spacey gives one of the most unexpectedly funny performances of his career as Robert Axle, an arrogant infomercial mogul whose empire collapses after one of his products maims thousands of consumers. After 8 years in prison, he tries to rebuild his fortune, but must first reconnect with his estranged daughter (Camilla Belle), her man-hating roommate (Heather Graham), his boneheaded new employer (Johnny Knoxville), the ex-wife who squandered his fortune (Academy Award(R) nominee Virginia Madsen of "Sideways"), and the ruthless executive who took over his company (John Stamos). Can a man who's lost everything devise a way to get back on top? Craig Robinson ("The Office"), Michael Rosenbaum ("Smallville") and Anna Annisimova co-star in this surprising comedy about fabrications, complications, and the situations people invent to find out who they really are.

Review: The Father of Industry is a fantastic satire on the infomercial industry.  Kevin Spacey gives an inspired performance as the slimy fallen mogul that has to try and rebuild his life and his family after he gets out of jail.  The struggle to rebuild his fortune is comical in a dark satire sort of way and his interaction with the supporting cast, especially Heather Graham.   The appearances from greats like Michael Rosenbaum (Smallville, Breaking In) are inspired and the overall feel of the film is solid.  This isn't ground breaking by any means, but the cast is great and the fun is there.

Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: A Tribe Called Quest has been one of the most commercially successful and artistically significant musical groups in recent history. The band’s sudden break-up in 1998 shocked the industry and saddened the scores of fans, whose appetite for the group’s innovative musical stylings never seem to diminish. This insightful film, directed by Michael Rapaport, takes viewers on a behind-the-scenes journey - chronicling the group's rise to fame and revealing the stories behind the tensions which erupted in the years to come.

Review: This is a documentary about the rise of the band A Tribe Called Quest.  I was familiar with their music, but not their story.  This is a very complete account through interviews and a great documentary story.  It shows the various members that have come and gone and the band's impact on music.  Its a great watch for any fan of a Tribe Called Quest.

Page One: Inside the New York Times Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: PAGE ONE: INSIDE THE NEW YORK TIMES deftly gains unprecedented access to The New York Times newsroom and the inner workings of the Media Desk. With the Internet surpassing print as the main news source and newspapers all over the country going bankrupt, PAGE ONE chronicles the transformation of the media industry at its time of greatest turmoil. It gives us an up-close look at the vibrant cross-cubicle debates and collaborations, tenacious jockeying for on-the-record quotes, and skillful page-one pitching that produce the daily miracle of a great news organization. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of journalists continuing to produce extraordinary work under increasingly difficult circumstances. At the heart of the film is the burning question on the minds of everyone who cares about a rigorous American press, Times lover or not: what will happen if the fast-moving future of media leaves behind the fact-based, original reporting that helps to define our society?

Review: Page One is a unique look inside the workings of a modern day newspaper, the New York Times.  This would've been a very different documentary a decade or more ago.  Now, its a feature about the struggle for a print newspaper to survive in the modern digital age.  The internet has really taken over, so its interesting to see all the work that goes into a publication nowadays.  This one is definately not for everyone, but it is a well-made documentary.

Review: Monte Carlo is child star Selena Gomez's foray into big screen features. The film is a concept we've seen before..young girls go overseas, mistaken identity and hilarity and mischief ensue.  The varied personalities of the girls and their clashes are a fun element, but for the most part this is nothing new.  Gomez looks great and is very charming on screen, so that makes it a nice watch.  This one is great for tweens or young girls.

Synopsis: Based on the original show that launched Pee-wee Herman into an American pop culture icon, Paul Reubens’ beloved quirky character brings his Playhouse to life once more. The Pee-Wee Herman Show On Broadway was shot at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City in January 2011, immediately following the conclusion of its wildly successful Broadway engagement. The 90-minute HBO special is filled with subversive humor and childlike wonder based both on Reubens’ original stage show The Pee-wee Herman Show and the Emmy-winning Saturday morning television show Pee-wee’s Playhouse that quickly became a cultural phenomenon.

Review: What?!  Are you serious?!  This is perhaps the best thing EVER!  If you grew up in the 1980s and early 1990s you get a gift that no one in history has ever gotten..you never have to grow up.  Pee-Wee exemplifies this with his character, as well as this love letter to fans that is the Pee-Wee Herman broadway show!  The show runs like an episode of the classic show, which ran for five seasons until Pee-Wee had a few...issues.   That aside, we love Paul Reubens and we're SO happy that he's back with a vengeance.  This 90 minute feature doesn't grow stale for any fan of the old show.  This one will bring you back with a few great nods to the present day.  There are rumors of a new Pee-Wee movie in the works too, so this is just the beginning of the new era.  Welcome back Pee-Wee...we've been waiting for you.

The special features on this blu-ray include: Commentary with Paul Reubens and cast.

Interest Range: Broadway, Pee-Wee

Debuting on Blu-ray & DVD on Nov. 1

When Christoph Waltz stepped onto the screen in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglourious Basterds American audiences immediately felt the presence that German theater-goers had long been aware of. In this piece, we take a look at Waltz’s villainous roles in American cinema, featuring his latest turn in Water for Elephants opposite Robert Pattinson and Reese Witherspoon.

Devastated by the sudden death of his parents at the height of The Depression, a young dreamer from the wrong side of the tracks, Jacob Jankowski (Pattinson), abandons his veterinary studies at
Cornell University. With no other family, no house, and no money, Jacob stows away on a train carrying the circus performers of The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.  Hired as a veterinarian to care for the troupe’s animals, Jacob is temporarily filled with the promise of an exciting life that comes with a traveling circus troupe. However, as he builds a rapport and falls in love with the star of the show, Marlena (Witherspoon), they become prey to the circus’s owner, Marlena’s violent and abusive husband August (Waltz).

  1. Inglourious Basterds as Col. Hans Landa

Col. Hans Landa is a German SS officer in the Sicherheitsdienst. He is nicknamed "The Jew Hunter," and, accordingly, is cruel and ruthless, but also manages to be charming, courteous, and diabolically intelligent. Landa is driven by ambition alone, and has no real loyalty to the Nazis, which is shown when he gladly switches sides (with generous American military benefits) at the end of the film. Waltz won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for this role.
  1. The Green Hornet as Chudnofsky

Benjamin Chudnofsky is a paranoid Russian gangster who, in an attempt to destroy The Green Hornet and Kato, plans to join all of the crime families of Los Angeles together to organize a sort of "super-mafia." Throughout the film, he becomes more and more paranoid and worries that he is losing his edge. Eventually, he starts calling himself "Bloodnofsky" in an attempt to intimidate his enemies. Chudnofsky eventually dies at the hands of The Green Hornet.

  1. Water for Elephants as August

August is the owner of the circus, and Marlena’s (the star of the show) husband. August mismanages the circus, brutally abusing both his animals and employees (as well as his wife). He will do whatever it takes to get his way, and for the circus to make money. Eventually, as an elephant that August had previously abused is trying to protect Marlena, the elephant accidently kills August.

  1. The Three Musketeers as Cardinal Richelieu

In this film, to be released October 21, Waltz plays the conniving Cardinal Richelieu, who hatches a deadly plan to overthrow King Louis. Richelieu frames the King’s new bride as having had an affair with Buckingham. If the King believes Richelieu’s lies, a war with England will surely follow, and the people of France will demand a stronger ruler – which Richelieu hopes is him – to get them through this crisis.

  1. Carnage as Alan Cowan
Debuting December 16, Waltz stars in Carnage as Alan Cowan, the father of a boy who beat up another couple’s son on the playground. When the two couples decide to meet to discuss the problem with their children, Alan incessantly distracts from the conversation by using his cell phone, and put his lawyerly background to good use when arguing with the other sets of parents.

Mr. Nice Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From middle-class Welsh boy and Oxford scholar to living the high life as one of Britain's biggest marijuana smugglers, Howard Marks (aka Mr. Nice) has led an existence of rollicking, improbable adventures recounted in this sexy and stylish biopic from director Bernard Rose (Candyman). The hippest playgrounds of the '70s and '80s set the stage for Rhys Ifans s (Greenberg, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) tour-de-force performance as the notorious drug dealer, whose legacy as an international hashish trader was elevated by stints as a spy for the British government, his involvement with an unhinged IRA operative (David Thewlis, Naked), and his eventual 25-year prison sentence. Chloe Sevigny (Big Love, Zodiac) and Crispin Glover (Alice in Wonderland) costar in this globetrotting caper that takes us along on Marks s wild and wonderful trip.

Review: Mr. Nice is a biopic of the infamous drug smuggler Howard Marks, aka Mr. Nice.  The lead role is played by the very underrated Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Little Nicky), who has a reputation for masterfully portraying some bizarre and shady characters.   The film is a bit trippy and is definately a wild ride for anyone interested in the drug lifestyle of the 1970s and 80s.  Ifans does a fantastic job with what can only be described as a limited character.  Without Rhys, this film would fall flat, but with him its a definate watch.

Buck DVD Review

Synopsis: BUCK, a richly textured and visually stunning film, follows Buck Brannaman from his abusive childhood to his phenomenally successful approach to horses. A real-life horse-whisperer , he eschews the violence of his upbringing and teaches people to communicate with their horses through leadership and sensitivity, not punishment. Buck possesses near magical abilities as he dramatically transforms horses - and people - with his understanding, compassion and respect.

A truly American story about an unsung hero and one of the most successful documentaries of the year, BUCK is about an ordinary man who has made an extraordinary life despite tremendous odds.

Review: Buck is, on the surface, a story about a horse trainer.  When you get into this film it may look a little dull...at least it did to us!  What we found was an in-depth, emotional, moving and fantastic film about an abused boy that grows to be an inspiring and fantastic horse trainer and person.  His compassion and sensitivity is astounding.  This one is a major surprise and definately a sleeper film that you won't want to miss.  The best documentary DVD of the season so far.

Interest Range: Drama
