The Universe: The Complete Season Five Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: It’s been 50 years since man ventured into the unknown, and the heavens are only now yielding their greatest secrets. Follow in the galactic path of THE UNIVERSE, which this season leads us even further into the world beyond our own with THE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE on both blu-ray and DVD.

From robotic rovers on Mars to NASA probes slamming into comets and deep space telescopes capturing violent images of the birth of stars, season five of this illuminating HISTORY™ series explores how these discoveries were made – and who made them. Dramatic CGI and interviews with expert cosmologists, astronomers and astrophysicists bring the history of the heavens down to earth and provide a glimpse into our future.

Review: Ok, the History Channel series "The Universe" is one of the best shows on TV.  Hands down.  Never before could you get and HD look into space.  I'm sorry, but its just fantastic.  Not only does dad enjoy this one, my wife and kids all love it, as well.  They're just learning about space in the classroom and they can come home to really SEE space in all its glory.  This elusive aspect of nature wasn't available for viewing like this when I was growing up...its a real treat.

Season five goes into the space probes and the Mars landing.  Its all visually stunning and fun to watch.  This show can be seen on DVD and its great, but honestly it should be viewed on blu-ray high definition if you have the option.  We highly, highly, highly recommend this show.  Its a must-own!

THE UNIVERSE: THE COMPLETE SEASON FIVE includes all 8 episodes on 2 DVDs or blu-ray discs and features episodes including “Mars: The New Evidence”, “Time Travel”, “Secrets of the Space Probes”, and “Dark Future of the Sun”

Top Shot: The Complete Season One DVD Review

Synopsis: From the shots of Annie Oakley to William Tell, HISTORY takes aim at legendary feats of marksmanship with the competition series TOP SHOT, in which 16 individuals from around the country shoot it out for a $100,000 prize.  From the producers of “Survivor”, “American Choppers” and “Dirty Jobs”, TOP SHOT: THE COMPLETE SEASON ONE arrives on DVD this January, timed to release with Season Two’s network debut.

Hosted by Colby Donaldson (Survivor), contenders face challenges inspired by real events, from Wild West gunfights to modern-day sniper missions. Every episode reveals the weapons, technologies, and tactics of a different era, while high-speed HD cameras capture each skillful execution with breathtaking precision. All will take aim, but only one contestant will walk away with the $100,000 prize, and title of “Top Shot.”  A bonus disc includes over an hour of never-before-seen additional footage of the 300+ auditions, contestant biographies, and elimination interviews that narrow the race down to the final two competitors.

Review:Top Shot is one of those shows that I really didn't expect to see on the History Channel.  I don't know why I didn't expect to see it, considering every other show is about war.  Top Shot, if you haven't caught it, is a marksman competition.  It gives each contestant various nearly impossible shooting challenges and they have to strut their stuff with hopes of not being eliminated.

If you're into shooting or guns at all, this is your show.  If you just like to watch people that have honed a craft..this one is for you.  I don't even like guns and I find myself watching the show whenever its on.  Its a fun watch and a unique show.

Dallas: The Complete Fourteenth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: In its 14th and final season, Dallas goes out in a gusher of murders and kidnappings, lies and blackmail, seductions and schemes. J.R., Bobby and Cliff – three original characters so big only Big D could hold ’em – are at the heart of the action, surrounded by oil-country folks who joined the series over the years and a passel of dynamic newcomers. And of course there’s that Dallas hallmark, a white-knuckle cliffhanger. This time it’s a two-part finale inspired by It’s a Wonderful Life in which J.R.’s guardian from the great beyond shows the Lone Star State’s meanest rattler what the world would have been without him. Think everything’s for the better? Then you’re in for some surprises!

Review: This DVD collects the fourteenth and final season of the epic television drama Dallas.  This soap-opera style show spanned over two decades and saw some of the top ratings on primetime television.

This final season has seen a lot of great cast members either leaving the show or cutting down how much they appear.  It was most certainly time to wrap things up, as the storylines were wearing a little thin.  Bobby loses his lovely wife and JR loses Uhing Oil.  The finale of the series was a bit odd and didn't make much sense, but hey whatcha gonna do.  This season is a must for any fan of the Dallas series!

The Virginity Hit DVD Review

Synopsis: The quest -- losing one's virginity -- is an ancient one, but the tools used to document it are distinctly modern in this mockumentary about a young man's endeavors to "close the deal," as his buddies (and documentarians) so charmingly put it. When Matt's untimely breakup with a girlfriend throws a monkey wrench into his plans, his friends urge him to continue the mission anyway -- with them along to film the adventures.

Review: The Virginity Hit is another film in a fine tradition of the American Pie series.  The Virginity Hit is quite simply a movie about young guys trying to lose their virginity.  Simple right?  Wrong.  The guys all get together and decide that they're going to make a documentary about the process of trying to lose it.  This is, of course, full of actors and is in no way a real documentary, but rather a cute twist on this tale thats been told so many ways.

Overall, this is a cute movie.  Definately more poignant for someone in the young teen age range.  I think a guy in his mid 20s that has a real life girlfriend might be bored by this one, although maybe the exploits and sense of desperation will be a trip down memory lane.  Hard to say.

21 Jump Street: the Complete Fourth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: The Complete 4th Season Now Available! The Smash TV Series Starring Johnny Depp!  All 26 explosive episodes that Entertainment Weekly hails as "too cool for school!"

It was the most unforgettable season in 21 JUMP STREET history, featuring the farewell performances of undercover cops Tom Hanson (Johnny Depp) and Harry Ioki (Dustin Nguyen). This Fourth Season also includes such explosive episodes as Judy Hoff's (Holly Robinson Peete) shocking rape, the mission to El Salvador by Doug Penhall (Peter DeLuise) to save the woman he loves, the return of Dennis Booker (Richard Grieco), a tragic secret in Ioki's past, Hanson's witnessing an execution, the fan favorite "How I Saved The Senator" and much more!

The complete 4th season of the hit TV series that launched the outstanding career of Johnny Depp as well as helped expose the FOX network to the American public is now available.

Review: 21 Jump Street was the show that launched Johnny Depp's career.  Hands down.  This show made him a hearthrob, which carried him through the early years and still sticks with him today, although he's done his best to shed that image in his film work.  The Fox network was desperate for exposure back in the late 1980s and this show, along with the Simpsons and Married With Children, made them the frontrunner in youth-geared hip programming.  My how times have changed!

The fourth season of 21 Jump Street was showing signs of the end, with Depp mailing in performances and clearly not into the show anymore.  He wanted to move-on and after this season he did.  The show is still great though and if you're a fan this season is a must-have.

Stone Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Academy Award® winner Robert De Niro and Oscar® nominee Edward Norton deliver powerful performances as a seasoned corrections official and a scheming inmate whose lives become dangerously intertwined in this “gritty and engrossing thriller” (Steve O’Brien, WCBS-FM). Jack Mabry (De Niro), a parole officer days away from retirement, is asked to review the case of Gerald “Stone” Creeson (Norton), in prison for arson. Now eligible for early release, Stone needs to convince Jack he has reformed, but his attempts to influence the older man’s decision with his wife Lucetta (Milla Jovovich) have profound and unexpected effects on them both. This tale of passion, betrayal and corruption skillfully weaves together the parallel journeys of two men grappling with dark impulses, as the line between lawman and lawbreaker becomes precariously thin.

Review: Edward Norton is famous for playing somewhat seedy roles.  He's done everything from the criminally insane to a skinhead to a scheming master criminal.  Now, we get him as an arsonist, looking for early release.  In typical Norton fashion, you see this squirrely and deceptive presence behind every look as he is always scheming and manipulating those around him.  He basically persuades his wife, portrayed by Milla Jovovich, to sleep with his corrections officer (DeNiro) in order to get him to recommend his early release.  This, of course, all blows up.  Shocker there.

Jovovich also turns in a nice performance.  We're not used to seeing her without a sword or a gun these days, so to see her in plain clothes, no zombies and really acting is a treat.  DeNiro is....well...DeNiro.  He's always DeNiro.  Not a bad thing, but honestly he is so emotionally inaccessible as an actor is hard to believe at times that he gives into carnal desire over his duty.  This is a great film, we highly recommend it.

Animal Kingdom Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Welcome to the Melbourne underworld, where tensions are building between dangerous criminals and equally dangerous police. The Wild West played out on the city's streets.

Armed robber Pope Cody (BEN MENDELSOHN) is in hiding, on the run from a gang of renegade detectives who want him dead. His business partner and best friend, Barry 'Baz' Brown (JOEL EDGERTON), wants out of the game, recognizing that their days of old-school banditry are all but over. Pope's younger brother, the speed-addicted and volatile Craig Cody (SULLIVAN STAPLETON), is making a fortune in the illicit substances trade - the true cash cow of the modern criminal fraternity - while the youngest Cody brother, Darren (LUKE FORD), naively navigates his way through this criminal world - the only world his family has ever known.
And into this world arrives their nephew, Joshua 'J' Cody (JAMES FRECHEVILLE).

Following the death of his mother, J finds himself living with his estranged family, under the watchful eye of his doting grandmother, Smurf (JACKI WEAVER), mother to the Cody boys.
J quickly comes to believe that he is a player in this world. But, as he soon discovers, this world is far larger and more menacing than he could ever imagine.

When tensions between family and police reach a bloody peak, J finds himself at the center of a cold-blooded revenge plot that turns the family upside down, and which also threatens to ensnare innocent bystanders such as his girlfriend, Nicky (LAURA WHEELWRIGHT).
One senior cop, Nathan Leckie (GUY PEARCE), must lure J into the police fold and then shepherd him through a complex minefield of witness protection, corrupt cops, slippery lawyers and a paranoid and vengeful underworld.

J comes to realize that in order to survive he must determine how the game is played - he must somehow choose his place in this cunning and brutal animal kingdom. He must work out where he fits.

Review: Animal Kingdom is one of those films that has really flown under the radar.  The film is dark, gritty and truly full of despair for all of the characters involved.  Thats not meant as an insult, however, because that makes this all the better as one of the best crime dramas that I've seen in a long while.

The film is rather convoluted with plot, so I will break it down like this for you...this film is about a boy whose mother dies of a heroin overdose and is sent to live with his professional criminal relatives.  He is basically thrown into a seedy Melbourne underworld and the inevitable life of crime.  This film continues on to be intense and full of great characters.  This one is a must for those that love crime drama like the Departed and the Town.

Jack Goes Boating Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Jack (Academy Award winner Philip Seymour Hoffman, making his directorial debut) and Connie (Amy Ryan) are two single people who on their own might continue to recede into the anonymous background of New York City, but in each other begin to find the courage and desire to pursue a budding relationship. As Jack and Connie cautiously circle commitment, the couple that introduced them, Clyde (John Ortiz) and Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega), confront their own unresolved issues, and each couple comes face to face with the inevitable path of their relationship.

Based on the acclaimed Off-Broadway play of the same name, this unconventional romantic comedy is a tale of love, betrayal, friendship and grace.

Review: Jack Goes Boating is the directoral debut of actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman.  He also stars as Jack, an glib, ackward and drab character in New York.  When he meets Connie she begins to open up the possibilities of life to him and they eventually begin a love affair.  Of course, in the nature of all good romantic films, there is strife that they must overcome.  The story here isn't that original or interesting, but the development of the characters is.  Hoffman turns in a typically interesting performance and pulls off a nice balance with his character.  The film ends up being rather charming and whitty, thanks to some great characters and fun dialogue.  Definately a must for those that enjoy the ackward.

The special features on this blu-ray include: Jack’s New York , From the Stage to the Big Screen, Deleted Scenes, Theatrical Trailer and Also on Blu-ray.

The King of Paper Chasin' DVD Review

Synopsis: When Carter Blanche (Dwayne “DL” Clark), a ruthless inner city drug dealer, tries to quit the crime game and go straight as a credible underground artist in the mixtape circuit, he faces deception, betrayal and violence from the people closest to him. As his crew turns against him, and his girlfriend cooperates with the FBI, Carter must take down his enemies before they destroy his empire.

Review: The King of Paper Chasin' has a lot of elements of a typical crime drama.  You have your hardcore criminal trying to legitimize himself in some way and really remove himself from a lifestyle that you cannot remove yourself from.  For some reason when people do this they never think to move to another city..I really think that would help, lol.  Anyway, this guy tries to break into the music scene and of course his thug friends won't have it.  Also, the FBI is still after him and all hell breaks loose.  This is kind of an urban version of 'The Town' in a way.  It was a solid movie and great if you enjoy 'gangsta' crime drama.  I personally enjoy the mobster films a bit better.

The bonus features include: Audio Commentary with DL, Director LaMonte Edwards and Directory of Photography Brett Albright, Making of Featurette.

Synopsis: The Invincible Iron Man May Have Met His Match In The New Serum Known As EXTREMIS!

An ill-fated attempt to re-create the legendary Super-Soldier Serum responsible for making classic heroes such as Captain America leads to the development of Extremis, a military nanotechnology serum that directly taps into the repair center of the body, giving an injured soldier the ability to heal himself at an alarmingly accelerated rate. Conflict erupts when the Extremis serum is injected into members of the local domestic militia, including Mallen, a soldier hell-bent on avenging the deaths of his family. When a brief battle between Iron Man and Mallen leaves billionaire Tony Stark in critical condition, it becomes clear that the only way for Stark to defeat the Extremis virus is to use it himself.

Boasting a fresh take on the Iron Man origin, highly acclaimed writing by master storyteller Warren Ellis and the magnificent artistry of Adi Granov, Iron Man: Extremis comes to life with the stellar blend of 2D- and 3D-motion comic animation that only Marvel Knights can deliver!

Review: This is the last of the three released Marvel Knights DVDs, hopefully more will be released soon.  This new series of DVDs collect motion comics of various Marvel comics like Black Panther, Iron Man and the X-Men.

This story, Iron Man: Extremis, mixes 3D and 2D animation.  Its a great and a great story.  I found it very entertaining after I adapted to the motion comic style of animation.  Hopefully Marvel will go towards straight animation soon!

As demand for the mutant cure reaches near-riot levels, the X-Men go head-to-head with the enigmatic Ord, with an unexpected ally - and some unexpected adversaries - tipping the scales!

Review: The new Marvel Knights DVD series are motion comics.  This is a concept that was poineered by Dc Comics (for once) and taken over by Marvel.  Marvel Comics has been taking some of their best comics from the past decade and translating them into motion comics.  The DVDs are being released through Shout! Factory.

I'm really fond of these new DVDs, mostly because I've always wanted to read a lot of these comics, but I have never found the time.  This is a fun and lazy way to enjoy them.  I've always enjoyed X-Men comics and I'd heard nothing but good things about Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men.  It was a great story and once you get used to the motion comic thing, its really fun.

Marvel Knights: Black Panther DVD Review

Synopsis: Deep in the heart of Africa lies Wakanda, an advanced and unconquerable civilization. A family of warrior kings possessing superior speed, strength and agility has governed this mysterious nation as long as time itself. The latest in this famed line is young King T’Challa, the great hero known worldwide as the Black Panther.

Now, outsiders once again threaten to invade and plunder Wakanda. Leading this brutal assault is Klaw, a deadly assassin with the blood of T’Challa’s murdered father on his hands, who brings with him a strong army of super-powered mercenaries. Even with Wakanda’s might and his own superhuman skills, can the Black Panther prevail against this deadly invading force?

From respected filmmaker/producer Reginald Hudlin and legendary comic book artist John Romita, Jr., comes the epic Black Panther story for which comic fans have waited 25 years. Starring Djimon Hounsou (Gladiator, Blood Diamond) and Alfre Woodard (True Blood, Star Trek: First Contact).

Review: Marvel Comics is often times ahead of DC Comics in technology and quality.  I say this as a HUGE DC Comics fan.  I do have Marvel characters that I have love for, mostly in the X-Men crew and I can honestly say that Marvel is usually on top.  This is the one exception to the rule.  DC has been putting out the DC Universe Original Animated films, which are fantastic.  Marvel has yet to do this.  Their first organized foray into animation is this new Marvel Knights series of motion comics, brought to DVD by the good people at Shout! Factory.   The motion comic concept has been utilized by DC since the Watchmen movie.

I will be honest, although I don't usually dig motion comics, these Marvel Knights DVDs are wonderful!  We're also going to spotlight the Iron Man and Astonishing X-Men DVDs on the site today.  We recommend picking them all up.  Its phenominal to see a character like Black Panther FINALLY get his due!  It may take a few minutes to adjust to the style of the motion comic animation, but once you do its well worth it.  Great story...great art.

The special features on this DVD include: A Conversation With Star Djimon Hounsou, Looking Back At Black Panther With Reginald Hudlin And John Romita, Jr., Exclusive Music Video and Trailers.

Interest Range: Marvel Comics, Black Panther

Review: The LeapFrog gang is always a great source of both educational content and entertainment for little ones.  Their DVDs are not only fun to watch, but the learning content is strong and the songs are well produced.

In this new DVD adventuere we're introduced to Tad and Lily's new dog, Scout!  The addition of the cute new character is great. The animation is in the new design, first premiered in LeapFrog: Lets Go To School, which we reviewed last year.  One thing also of note...the LeapFrog DVDs now include closed captioning, which is wonderful.  Overall, this was a great watch, the kids loved it and they definately learned a lot.  Highly recommended!

Sins of My Father DVD Review

Synopsis: Argentinian filmmaker Nicolas Entel does something very different in looking at the legend that is Pablo Escobar. Entel focuses on the life of his son, Sebastian Marroquin, and his attempts to come to grips with all the hideous karmic wreckage inflicted by his malevolent father. It is the story of difficult reconciliation where the desire for revenge in countries racked by by ethnic and religious strife is almost an everyday occurance. Riveting!!

Review: We love documentaries here at the Legion....especially those that tell a unique story.  In Sins of My Father we get to hear from the son of notorious drug lord Pablo Escobar.  We see the untold story of how he tries to come to terms with the legacy of his father and the destruction that his life left behind for him.  I found this documentary to be revealing and surprisingly riveting.  I definately recommend it.

Jim Varney turned what could've been a mere 30-second TV spot into the memorable, lovable character an entire generation knows as Ernest P. Worrell. From camp, to Halloween and even jail, families across the world enjoyed a variety of adventures with Ernest. This all-new 3-Movie set celebrates the life and crowning achievement of Jim Varney with his most successful theatrical feature films!

PROGRAMS INCLUDE:

Ernest Goes to Camp 1987 / Color / 92 Mins / PG Everyone's favorite pitchman Ernest P. Worrell stars in his first feature film as the bumbling handyman at Kamp Kikakee who is given a chance to finally be a councilor to a group of juvenile delinquents. Ernest has his hands full with his young charges that delight in tormenting him with their practical jokes. When an unscrupulous mine owner sets his sights upon the camp property, Ernest and his campers must band together to save the day!

Ernest Goes to Jail 1990 / Color / 81 Mins / PG Bank janitor Ernest P. Worrell is called to jury duty and soon finds himself in trouble when the lookalike defendant's attorney arranges a switch and has Ernest sent to prison in his client's place. While Ernest struggles to deal with prison life, his criminal double decides to use Ernest's job at the bank as an opportunity to rob it. Will Ernest be able to break out of prison in time to stop the robbery and expose the mix-up?

Ernest Scared Stupid 1991 / Color / 91 Mins / PG When Ernest looks to help some children with their Halloween haunted house, he ends up accidentally unleashing an evil troll that intends to bring about the end of the World. While having to deal with his youthful friends being transformed into wooden dolls by the troll, our hero Ernest looks to find a way to stop it and return his friends to normal. This will be one Halloween that Ernest and his pals will never forget!

Review: Who didn't love Ernest?  Come on, be honest!  The late Jim Varney was remembered for his work as Slinky Dog in Toy Story, but before that he was talking to the imaginary Vern and giving us everything he had in the Ernest film franchise.  The ultimate character actor, Sacha Baron Cohen could learn a thing or two!

All three of these films were box office successes, but our favorite is Ernest Scared Stupid.  It is one of the best halloween-themed films in existance and his highly underrated.  These cult classics were very beloved in their day and should see a comeback in popularity on the underground scene again soon.  The comedy is still great and the stories are fun.

Mill Creek has released this triple back for a super cheap price, which is fantastic.  You can get all three films for around $7.  Seriously...$7!  How can you say no to that?  We can't.

White Wedding Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Set against South Africa’s breathtaking landscapes, WHITE WEDDING is a high-spirited modern day road comedy about love, commitment, intimacy, friendship, and the unbelievable obstacles that can get in the way of a fairy-tale ending. Ayanda (Zandie Msutwana) is just days away from her lifelong dream of a modern ‘white wedding,’ complete with a dazzling dress, dozens of bridesmaids, a flamboyant wedding planner and large reception at a fancy hotel. The only problem is that her husband-to-be, the sweet, committed Elvis (Kenneth Nkosi), is 1,000 miles away with his childhood friend and best-man Tumi (Rapulana Seiphemo). What should be a simple, straightforward journey gets seriously derailed, forcing Elvis, Tumi and Rose (Jodie Whittaker), a footloose English doctor they meet along the way to tackle directional mishaps, car accidents, a tag-along goat, and a potentially dangerous encounter with a bar full of redneck Afrikaners seemingly stuck in the era of Apartheid. Ultimately charmed by Elvis’ infectious spirit, everyone surrounding him becomes determined to get him to his destination. Meanwhile, poor Ayanda is watching her dream unravel as she wrestles with problems of her own -- from questioning whether there’s any truth to Elvis’ preposterous excuses of why he might not get to the church on time, being caught between European and African traditions as her mother (Sylvia Mngxekeza) has a very different idea about how the wedding should be orchestrated, and dealing with the unexpected arrival of Tony (Mbulelo Grootboom), a slick old boyfriend with a questionable agenda. WHITE WEDDING subtly interweaves South Africa’s history as bride, groom, friends and lovers are forced to look at the meaning of marriage, fidelity, honesty and the two sides to every story.

Review: White Wedding is one of those romantic comedies that you've seen a hundred times.  The happy couple is separated and the bride's dreams of a perfect white wedding start to dwindle as time ticks by and the groom is struggling to travel across country to get to her just in the knick of time!  The twist on this one is that it takes place in South Africa.  This one change actually makes this film interesting and fun.  Everything from racists to crazy obstacles keep the groom away and its an enjoyable ride.  The scenery and the cultures we're not used to are fun.  It shows us differences, but that when it comes to love...so much is the same.  Great film.

Nowhere Boy Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: John Lennon's childhood. Liverpool, 1955: a smart and troubled fifteen-year-old is hungry for experience. In a family full of secrets, two incredible women clash over John (Aaron Johnson): Mimi (Kristin Scott Thomas), the buttoned-up aunt who raised him, and Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), the prodigal mother. Yearning for a normal family, John escapes into the new
and exciting world of rock 'n' roll where his fledgling genius finds a kindred spirit in the teenage Paul McCartney (Thomas Brodie Sangster). Just as John begins his new life, tragedy strikes. But a resilient young man finds his voice - and an icon explodes into the world.

Review:The early life of John Lennon is a topic of much fascination for any Beatles fan.  This biopic is based on Lennon's relationship with his mother, which was rocky at best and even clinically disturbing at times.  The fact remains that his mother is the one that directed him towards music and if it weren't for that influence the sequence of events that made the Beatles, and subsequently Lennon, what they were would not have happened.

This film captures the feel of the era and what was happening in Liverpool back in the 1950s-60s.  Its a great movie that is well-acted and has a lot of heart.  Any fan of Lennon, serious or casual, will enjoy it.  Is everything 100% factual?  Of course not..its a movie, but it certainly is fun.  The film looks fantastic on blu-ray, and we definately recommend it in this format for the best sound/pic combination.

ER: The Complete Fourteenth Season DVD Review

ER: The Complete Fourteenth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: At an ER party, Nurse Chuny Marquez recalls, "I still remember when Mark Green and Doug Ross were running the place." "Who?" asks a newcomer. So much has happened in 14 seasons, so many people have come and gone, but the chaos of saving lives and the dedication of the people who make County General run remain. In this penultimate season of the powerful, award-winning series, personal tragedies threaten - and sometimes strengthen - relationships among the staff. And the patients bring their own compelling stories. A boy genius diagnoses his mysterious illness, a cancer-ridden prison doctor is haunted by the men he put to death, a woman arrives in the ER expecting her 13th baby. Triumph, loss, tears, joy... next!

This box set contains every episode from the 14th and penultimate season of the long-running hit NBC medical drama E.R. The season's storylines involve political maneuvering between those seeking to be named chief of the E.R., a child prodigy with a rare illness, and a prison doctor haunted by what he's seen on the job.

Review: E.R. was one of the best and longest running medical dramas on TV.  The ever-changing cast of players never seemed to slow this show down.  Not until season 14.  The lag in interesting storylines may have been due to the writer's strike that year or maybe its just that the show had finally run it's course.  The show ends up running for one more season, thank goodness.

Season 14 isn't all bad, it just doesn't live up to the previous seasons.  I mean, John Stamos is a main character this season.  Thats a great sign that your show has one more season left in it.  This DVD is worth getting for your ER collection, but its certainly not the best example of what the show could be.

The special features on this DVD set include: unaired scenes, ER at 300: highlights from the ER 300th episode and a gag reel.

Interest Range: Medical Drama

Gun Blu-Ray Review

Gun Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In the face of rising crime rates and gun violence, the Detroit Police launches a full-scale war against gun runners. With the cooperation of the Feds they target a criminal named Rich (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) and his arms operation. When a gun exchange goes bad and Rich’s old friend Angel (Val Kilmer), steps up big time and saves his life, they form a bond that makes his supplier and lover, Gabriella (AnnaLynne McCord) paranoid. But there is a snitch in the group and Gabriella’s biggest deal goes bad only to have an even bigger secret revealed, one that rocks Rich to his core.

Review: This new film is a crime drama featuring Val Kilmer and 50 Cent.  Normally I would immediately dismiss this film as cliche and absurd by the cover, but I decided to give it a fair watch.  Val Kilmer has earned that from me for his years of good service in films like the Doors, Real Genius, Top Secret and Kiss Kiss Bang Bang.  I'm not a rap fan, so 50 Cent doesn't hold any special place for me, although I have seen other rappers transcend the barrier and become entertaining actors (Ice Cube, Ice-T).

This film has a lot of grit and a lot of action.  The plot is somewhat predictable, no real shockers here, but it was an enjoyable ride.  The film is well-made, a good script and fine acting.  50 Cent impressed me with his acting abilities, I think he has a definite future, although probably strictly in this genre.  The film looks great in high-definition.  I recommend for anyone that enjoys modern crime drama.

Two-Faced Woman DVD Review
The Warner Archive Collection is proud to present the long awaited release of Greta Garbo’s final film Two Faced Womanand two of her other memorable films Romance and Torrent.  Available now at the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_Garbo

Synopsis:Larry Blake (Melvyn Douglas) is growing a bit blasé about his outdoorsy bride Karin (Greta Garbo). So Karin masquerades as her temptress twin, suggestively purring “I’m partial to the indoor life” in a bid to pique her husband’s romantic attention – and the sophisticated fun begins! Viewers willing to suspend their disbelief (who could weary of Garbo?) are in for a double dose of the divine in the great star’s final film, a romantic comedy that reunites her with her Ninotchka leading man Douglas and Camille director George Cukor. Exquisitely gowned, Garbo is obviously having a ball as the faux femme fatale, especially in a sexy south-of-the-border dance sequence that’s a lot more Latin Bombshell than Swedish Sphinx.

Review: Greta Garbo will go down in history as one of the greatest hollywood vamps.  She retired at age 36 after making only 25 films.  The Warner Archive has brought back her 1941 classic Two-Faced Woman on DVD for the first time.  This classic film, previously available only on hard to find VHS, looks absolutely amazing.  The film quality is great and the sound is as good as can be asked for.

Garbo is absolutely stunning in the film.  Her character is certainly sympathetic and the laughs are abound.  There are some great outdoors shots to enjoy, especially in the skiing bits.  Overall, this is a wonderful film.  If you enjoy noir film and get into vintage comedy, this one is a gem!

2 Weeks In Another Town DVD Review

Available for the first time on DVD, starting Tuesday, January 18, only at the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_TwoWeeks

Synopsis: In 1952, star Kirk Douglas, director Vincente Minnelli, producer John Houseman and screenwriter Charles Schnee teamed for what many consider the greatest drama ever made about Hollywood: The Bad and the Beautiful. Ten years later, they took another powerful insider’s look at the movie business, this time adapting a book by Irwin Shaw. Douglasportrays has-been screen idol Jack Andrus. Just out of a sanitarium, Jack grabs at a small role in a movie shot in Romeby a director (Edward G. Robinson) whose career is also on the skids. When the director falls ill, Jack takes over, realizing this is his last shot at personal and professional redemption. Trenchant, confrontational, intensified by Minnelli’s genius for color, Two Weeks in Another Town captures the passion of creative people facing the abyss.

Review: 2 Weeks in another town is a film that was directed by Vincente Minelli as a type of follow-up to the great classic The Bad and the Beautiful.  This classic Kirk Douglas feature teams him with Lana Turner and its a match made in heaven.  This vintage film is about a washed-up actor searching for redemption at any cost.  Its a theme that nowadays is a bit cliche, but when it was made it was very original.  This film is an absolute gem and I couldn't be happier that the Warner Archive has risen it from the ashes for us all to enjoy.

Kathleen Madigan: Gone Madigan Blu-Ray Review

Kathleen Madigan: Gone Madigan Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Kathleen Madigan: Gone Madigan: Finally, a comedian who isn't whining, insulting or self-loathing. Kathleen Madigan is just brilliantly funny and is still, after 20 years in the business, actually having fun. In this hilarious stand-up special, shot at the Gramercy Theater in New York City, Kathleen takes on politics, American culture and her family who has given her full permission to sell them down them down the river. Winner of the American Comedy Award for Best Female Comic, Madigan has been seen over 12 times on The Tonight Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, The View, Dr. Phil, ESPN, The Joy Behar Show and has had her own specials on HBO and Comedy Central. Madigan was the only comedian in the history of NBC's Last Comic Standing to go unchallenged by any other comedian. She lives in Los Angeles but spends inordinate amounts of time with her family in the Missouri Ozarks.

Review: We love stand-up comedy here at the Legion.  We usually try to stick to Comedy Central DVDs when doing reviews, but occasionally we'll make an exception and stray from the pack.

I had never seen Kathleen Madigan before, but she's pretty damn funny.  From her New Year's resolution to no longer self-diagnose on WebMD to her commentary on vegetarians she gives her own take on life and with a comedic style that isn't whiny or rude...its just great observational humor.

Interest Range: Stand-up Comedy

Yo Gabba Gabba: Let's Visit the Doctor DVD Review

Yo Gabba Gabba: Let's Visit the Doctor DVD Review

Synopsis: Yo Gabba Gabba: Let’s Visit the Doctor! delivers a dose of episodes to help pre-schoolers deal with the all too common sniffles. When Todee becomes sick, the Doctor gives her a check-up and her Gabbaland friends gather around with chicken soup, warm blankets and fairytale stories! When Todee feels better, it’s back to playtime and snacks with her Gabbaland friends!

Review: Yo Gabba Gabba is one of those programs that drives me nuts as a parent.  My kids absolutely adore it, but its not designed for adult entertainment.  That said, the kids do love it and its a cute program.  Its the kind of thing dad likes to put on when he's doing dishes or otherwise occupied for them to watch, lol.

This DVD features an episode about visiting the doctor.  Shows like this are great, because they can help relieve some anxiety that your preschooler might have about the doctor.  Its a great DVD for a nice price.  We definately recommend.
