The Smurfs DVD Review

Synopsis: When the evil wizard Gargamel chases the tiny blue Smurfs out of their village, they tumble from their magical world and into ours -- in fact, smack dab in the middle of Central Park. Just three apples high and stuck in the Big Apple, the Smurfs must find a way to get back to their village before Gargamel tracks them down.

Review: We loved the Smurfs here at the Legion.  The 80s were a blessed era for animation and thats why moviegoing audiences are being treated to remake after remake of our favorite franchises.  Of all the people excited about this movie, my daughter was the most.  She has been watching the old cartoon seasons and was SO excited.   It turned out that the entire family enjoyed this one, from my daughter and son up to mom and dad!  Hank Azaria works his magic, as always, with a fantastic comical performance.  The CGI on the Smurfs is great and the movie was really fun.

The special features on this DVD include: Find the Smurfs Game, The Smurfs: Comic Book to the Big Screen and Going Gargamel.

Hostel: Part III DVD Review

Synopsis: High stakes gambling takes on a sinister new meaning in this third chapter of the terrifying Hostel series. While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.

Review: The Hostel horror film series has made a reputation for being shocking and over the top and this third installment is no exception.  This should be the point where a franchise gets campy or dries up, but in a nice twist it reinvents itself!  The film premise is basically a bachelor party in Vegas gone wrong...the plot centers around a runing man-esque gore reality show where people bet on the killings and the details within.  This one has a great twist and is big fun for any gore-horror fan!

The special features include: Commentary with Director Scott Spiegel and Kip Pardue.

Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas Special Edition Blu-Ray/DVD Review

Synopsis: Celebrate the most magical time of the year with this Special Edition of the irresistible holiday classic inspired by Disney's Academy Award(R)-winnng masterpiece, Beauty And The Beast (1991: Winner -- Best Song, Best Original Score; nominated for Best Picture). Share the wonder as Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury) recounts another "tale as old as time" about a Christmas past that almost wasn't -- thanks to the scheming of former court composer Forte (Tim Curry), now a gloomy, holiday-hating pipe organ, determined to keep Belle and Beast apart forever. Only a true Christmas musical could possibly thwart his dastardly plans. Reuniting the original voice cast, this spectacular gem sparkles with exciting bonus features, delightful songs, spellbinding visuals, and enduring themes of hope, friendship and love. Your family will experience the spirit of the season all year long with the timeless magic of Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas.

Review: We LOVE Disney here at the Legion and the Beauty and the Beast film was amongst their finest work.   The tradition of animated sequels and follow-ups is that they are usually terrible, especially if they go straight to home video.  This feature, The Enchanted Christmas, was no such sequel.  This film was fantastic!  They spent the time and money to put quality production, story and casting into this holiday themed follow-up.  I truly felt it should've been released for theaters.  This is the first time that this one is on blu-ray and it looks absolutely sharp and vibrant.  This set includes the original DVD too, so this is a great way to commemorate this film for your kids and the family.

The special features include: Blu-ray(TM)Feature Film + Bonus, DVD Feature Film + Bonus, Disney's Sing Me A Story With Belle: "Stick To It (Don't Give Up)" -- Belle Inspires Children To Keep Trying And Never Give Up, Disney Sing Along Mode, Disney's Song Selection -- Select Your Favorite Songs And Sing Along, Behind-The-Scenes Featurettes, Music Video: "As Long As There's Christmas" and Enchanted Environment -- Bring The Castle's Crackling Fireplace Into Your Home.

Sledge Hammer! The Complete Series DVD Review

Synopsis: If this is law enforcement, God help us all! Rebel cop, Sledge Hammer (David Rasche) is everyone’s favorite trigger-happy lawman and a one-man crusade against crime. His extreme, unorthodox methods which include, firing warning shots at jaywalkers, dragging suspects around parking lots by his rear bumper until they confess, blasting a building-demolishing bazooka shot at a sniper, and talking to his .44 Magnum have gotten him suspended from the force more times than he can remember… but he gets results! Harrison Page and Anne-Marie Martin co-star in this hilariously deranged lampoon of Dirty Harry. This special collection includes both seasons from Sledge Hammer!, one of the funniest, most notorious series in television history whose rabid cult of fans grows to this day.

Review: If you were around and watching good TV in the 1980s, then you probably remember Sledge Hammer.  The exploits of this over the top violent cop, Sledge, are reveared amongst TV fans as a cult classic!  This is the first time that you can own the complete series (two seasons) together in one set on DVD!

The show was basically a spoof of the overly violent cop dramas of the 1970s-80s with a slightly goofier tone, like Get Smart or Naked Gun.  The show honestly reminds me a bit of Castle with more violence, now that I watch it again after so many decades.  It was a treat to be able to relive and collect this classic show on DVD.

Nick Di Paolo: Raw Nerve DVD Review

Synopsis: Scathingly satirical comedian Nick DiPaolo brings his razor wit, trademark sarcasm and strong political views to this socially relevant, typically reckless standup performance.

Review: We love stand-up comedy here at the Legion and we only feature comics that we enjoy, so that we don't waste your time.  Nick Di Paolo is a New York comic with an edge.  He has been featured on some of the roasts and can tear apart with the best of them.  His sets are notoriously risque and a bit brutal.  This new DVD has a solid set that starts out very edgy and eventually settles into his ususal flow, which isn't a bad thing.  This is a great watch and definately worth checking out.

Kill Katie Malone DVD Review

Synopsis: College students and best friends Ginger Matheson, Jim Duncan, and Kyle Dixie Canning, pool their cash to buy a ghost in an online auction. The three think it's all a prank, but once they open up the antique box to examine their treasure, they unleash the vengeful spirit of a servant girl who has been wreaking havoc on her owners throughout the generations.

Review: In the tradition of great horror flicks, Kill Kate Malone keeps up the genre with a fun premise and some truly creepy moments.  The film examines three friends as they accidentally purchase a very real and very angry ghost online.  That was mistake number one...what ensues is rather suspenseful and blissfully disturbing.  Defiantely a good watch.

Switched at Birth: Volume One DVD Review

Synopsis: Bay Kennish grew up in a wealthy family with her happily married parents and older brother. Daphne Vasquez lost her hearing as a child, and grew up with a single mother in a working class neighborhood. Life as they know it is turned upside down when Bay's school project about blood types reveals she is not genetically related to her parents, and a series of tests confirms she and Daphne were accidentally switched at birth. Together with their families, Bay and Daphne struggle with their own identities and prejudices against one another, all while facing everyday teenage girl drama dating, friendships, and family.

Featuring acclaimed actors Lea Thompson, Constance Marie, Marlee Matlin, and D.W. Moffett, and rising stars Katie Leclerc, Vanessa Marano, Lucas Grabeel, and Sean Berdy, Switched At Birth is a superbly acted and heartfelt series that the entire family will enjoy!

Review: We've seen a lot of ABC Family shows and they sometimes come off as cliche or drab, but not Switched at Birth.  This one really caught our eye.  It has a fantastic premise of two girls, literally switched at birth and born into two very different worlds.  The show follows two girls as they discover that they were accidentally switched at birth..of course one is rich and the other is very working class, so they don't get along and their outlooks are completely different.  This makes for some great drama and a show that the entire family can enjoy.

Join all your Family Guy favorites for this classic whodunit, plus 13 other hilarious episodes, including the show’s milestone 150th episode, the controversial “Extra Large Medium,” and more!

Review: Family Guy is one of those animated phenomenons that just keeps on trucking.  Unlike the Simpsons, Family Guy didn't take right away and was cancelled by Fox.  Later, due to fan demand, it was brought back and is now still going strong.  This DVD release features the final 11 episode of season 8 and the first three of season 9.  I'm not a fan of how they release this show, I prefer full season sets myself.  The episodes are great, the picture is perfect and the comedy is there.  The DVD has a bunch of extras and is still a great addition to any fan's collection.

Stars & Stripes Forever Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: "Stars and Stripes Forever" is the rousing and patriotic march heard every Fourth of July, and, the inspirational film about the American music legend who wrote it, John Philip Sousa. Beginning with Sousa's days as a sergeant major in the United States Marine Corps and leader of the Corps' famous marching band, "Stars and Stripes Forever" transports you back to the 1890s and Sousa's ascent to world renown as a composer and conductor of "The Sousa Band". Three-time Academy Award(R) Nominee Clifton Webb shines as Souza, "The March King," along with Robert Wagner, Debra Paget and Ruth Hussey.

Review: Stars and Stripes Forever is a nice little biopic about the most famous marching band leader of all time, John Phillip Sousa.   The film is loosely based on this life, taking some dramatic and comedic license at times.  The acting is solid and the overall demeanor of Sousa is captured in this rather entertaining movie.  This is the first time its been available on high-definition blu-ray disc!  The movie looks fantastic.  There is no visible grain and the colors really pop.  This one is a great addition to any collection.

The special features include: From Our National March To The Silver Screen, John Philip Sousa's Contribution To American Music, Pressbook, Advertising and Still Galleries and Original Theatrical Trailer.

Elvira's Movie Macabre -
Santa Claus Conquers The Martians / Beast From Haunted Cave DVD Review

Synopsis: Elvira prepares for her second favorite holiday by screening a camp classic featuring Santa thwarting a Martian plot to steal Christmas plus an abominable film about gangsters battling a snow beast at a ski-lodge. Includes cult director Roger Corman's Beast from Haunted Cave and the B-movie holiday classic Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Review: Who doesn't love Elvira?  She's probably where my esteem for goth girls came from back in the day, lol.  She is the mistress of the b-movie and this cool new DVD collection features two such films that are Xmas-themed.  The better of the two films is a Corman classic, "Beast From Haunted Cave".  This collection is fantastic for any b-movie fan and would make an excellent Xmas gift.

Synopsis: Samuel is a nurse working at a hospital when his pregnant wife is kidnapped before his very eyes. Knocked unconscious, he comes to and discovers that a dangerous criminal named Sartet is responsible, and if he's ever to see his wife again, he must do Sartet's bidding. Samuel quickly finds himself pitted against rival gangsters and trigger-happy police in a deadly race to save the lives of his wife and unborn child.

Review: Point Blank is a French film about a man that is caught in the deadly web of the underworld.  We've seen similarly themed films in the past, but none executed quite so well as this one.   The action is non-stop and the way we see Samuel develop and come into his own as he is faced with circumstance that rip him from the norms of life is a wild ride.  This one is a MUST see.

Underbelly: The Trilogy DVD Review

Synopsis: UNDERBELLY uses the framework of the war waging within the underworld, and the war between the underworld and the Purana Task Force, to explore a complex array of individual stories and relationships some touching, some incredible, all breathtaking. It is a series that examines the kaleidoscopic nature of loyalty, love, revenge and pride when the normal and identifiable emotions of human attachment are moved from the context of social decency to social indecency. Based on actual events, this explicit, gripping and violent trilogy exposes the shocking true story of the crime wave that rocked Australia from the 1970s until the early 2000s. Includes three, 13-episode series of Underbelly: A Tale of Two Cities , The Golden Mile and War On The Streets .

Review: We don't get a lot of Australian import television here in the United States.  I don't know if thats due to lack of quality or just lack of distribution.   Underbelly is the Aussie answer to the crime drama.  The show went for a few seasons down under and even spawned some TV movies there.  I found the show to be great in tone and in drama.  The story isn't quite as thick as comparable American crime dramas like the Sopranos, but that honestly isn't a bad thing.  I felt like the Sopranos was a little self-indulgent at times.  Underbelly takes a slightly lighter and seedier feel to the underworld.  The characters are great and the series is a must-see for any TV buff.  This well-priced collection should definately be yours.

Catch .44 Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From The Executive Producers of MACHETE and TRUE GRIT

Bruce Willis, Malin Akerman (Watchmen), Nikki Reed (The TWILIGHT Saga), Deborah Ann Woll (''True Blood'') and Academy Award® winner Forest Whitaker (The Last King of Scotland) star in the tough, sexy story of three hit women sent to rural Louisiana to intercept a big money dope deal. But when they get to the near-empty roadside café, bullets blast apart what was supposed to be a simple transaction. It could be a huge, bloody misunderstanding but it might also be a deadly double-cross. Shea Whigham (''Boardwalk Empire'') and Academy Award® nominee Brad Dourif (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest) co-star in this intense crime thriller with a killer twist.

Review: This is a rather controvertial new action crime-drama that has the net buzzing.  It has a stellar cast (although Willis is more of a cameo), but it went direct to home video.  If you're into modern and unique filmmaking, there hasn't been anything this interesting in the genre since Tarrantino was busting down the walls with Pulp Fiction.  This edgy and stylized flick features three hit women and a deal gone wrong.  The drama ensues and secrets come out...this one is explosive, unique and a true breath of fresh air.

Straw Dogs Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: A young couple (James Marsden and Kate Bosworth) moves to a quaint southern town. Soon their perfect getaway turns out to become a living hell when dark secrets and lethal passions spiral out of control. Trapped by a pack of depraved locals led by a ruthless predator (Alexander Skarsgard, TV’s True Blood), they face a night of agonizing suffering and endless bloodshed. Now their only hope for survival is to become more savage than their merciless torturers. Also starring two-time Academy Award® Nominee James Woods (Best Actor, Salvador, 1986 and Best Supporting Actor, Ghosts of Mississippi, 1996).

Review: Straw Dogs is a remake of the 1970s cult classic ultra-violence flick that originally starred Dustin Hoffman.    They did a very nice job of recreating the magic of the first film with this remake, albeit this one is a bit rougher around the edges in some ways, its also more modern era hollywood.  The film is a meciless drama that is not for the faint at heart.  This one promises edge of your seat thrills, suspense and a twisted ending that will leave you thinking and talking about human nature.

Blackthorn Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: It's been said that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In BLACKTHORN, Cassidy (Sam Shepard) survived and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the U.S. and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. But when an unexpected encounter with an ambitious young criminal (Eduardo Noriega) derails his plans, he is thrust into one last adventure, the likes of which he hasn't experienced since his glory days with the Sundance Kid.

Review: We love a good western here at the Legion.  Now, the key to that statement is good western.   There are a lot of films and TV shows in the genre from the camp of the 1950s to the grit of the early 1990s.  This film is one of the best we've seen in a long while.  It gives more lore to Butch Cassidy as an older man and the aftermath of his life.  This one has depth, emotion and definately a fantastic tone.

With the help of his actress girlfriend, the young pilot battles enormous odds to defeat his foes who are anxious to use the device in an evil plan to rule the world! The dangerous mission transforms the ordinary young man into an extraordinary hero.

Review: The Rocketeer was one of my favorite films of the 1990s.  The movie, based on a comic book of the same name, was an absolute gem.  The film basically centers on WWII America...a young man finds a rocket pack..there are nazi spies..beautiful starlets..its got it all!  This family friendly film pre-dates high-quality action films like Iron Man with the same amount of wit and quality.  This is the first time the movie has come to high-definition blu-ray and it looks fantastic!  This one is a must-have.

Tora! Tora! Tora! Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Tora! Tora! Tora!...is the code that advised Japanese Imperial Navy commanders that the devastating December 7, 1941 attack on Hawaii commenced with utter surprise and without resistance. Torpedo bombers, dive bombers and fighter planes swept down upon Pearl Harbor and other military targets, killing over 2,400 and wounding over 1,200. More than a dozen ships were damaged or destroyed. Dozens of aircraft were lost. America, “the sleeping giant,” was abruptly awakened by WWII.

Tora! Tora! Tora! is Twentieth Century Fox’s meticulously researched and painstakingly authentic reenactment of “the date which will live in infamy” and the political and military intrigue that preceded it. This stunning and definitive war docudrama stars Jason Robards, Martin Balsam and E.G. Marshall.

Review: This is the blu-ray book and first high-definition release of the film classic Tora! Tora! Tora!  This film, for those that aren't familiar, this film is a representation of Japan's historical attack on Pearl Harbor during WWII.   The film looks great on blu-ray, although some of the scenes where aircraft are taking off include some grain, the movie overall looks fantastic.  This epic classic is a must-have in this ultimate collector's format.  We cannot recommend it enough. This one would make a great Xmas gift.

The special features include: Theatrical Feature Blu-ray, Commentary by Director Richard Fleischer & Japanese Film Historian Stuart Galbraith IV, Day of Infamy Documentary, History vs. Hollywood – TORA! TORA! TORA!: A Giant Awakes, AMC Backstory®: TORA! TORA! TORA!, Behind-the-Scenes Gallery, Production Gallery, FOX Movietone News, Original Theatrical Trailer and Collectible Hardcover Book.

Review: Futurama is one of those rare cult shows that was resurrected from the dead.  Comedy Central brought it back to much fan cheer awhile back.  This blu-ray release marks the sixth season of the show.  The plot didn't have a ton of modifications, but the comedy was spot-on for the show and any fan should still be swooning over this one.

A Flintstone Christmas Collection DVD Review

Synopsis: Celebrate the solstice in Stone Age style with these two animated holiday classics, starring America's favorite pre-historic family. Your first course of holiday cheer from Fred and co. is 1977's A Flintstone Christmas, in which Fred and Barney must save Christmas when Santa sprains his ankle. There's one big problem, though - Fred promised Mr. Slate that he will play Santa at the Children's holiday party. Can Fred and Barney deliver all the toys and still make it back to the party in time? And your second course is 1993's Emmy® nominated A Flintstone Family Christmas, which gives viewers a glimpse into the later life of the Rubbles and the Flintstones. Awaiting the return of Pebbles and Bamm-Bamm (now married with children of their own), Fred and Barney encounter a criminally inclined "caveless" youth. Fred and Wilma attempt to instill values in the boy, only to find themselves with a most unexpected Christmas gift.

Review: We love vintage animation here at the Legion and nobody did cartoons better back in the day than Hanna Barbera.  This new DVD release has two vintage Flintstones Xmas specials, one from 1977 and one from 1993.  Its funny how the animation is pretty similar, but the tone is so vastly different.  The special from 1977 is all about light-hearted fun, while the 1993 special is a little more preachy and socially conscious..a reflection of the times.   Either way, these both rock and what better way to spend Xmas than with the Flintstones?  Get this one immediately!

Life, Above All (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review

Synopsis: Just after the death of her newly born sister, Chanda (12) learns of a rumour spreading through her small village near Johannesburg. It destroys her family and forces her mother to flee. Chanda leaves home and school in search of her mother - and the truth. Life, Above All is an emotional and universal drama about a young girl (stunningly performed by first-time-actress Khomotso Manyaka) who fights the fear and shame that have poisoned her community. The film captures the enduring strength of loyalty and a courage powered by the heart. Directed by South African filmmaker Oliver Schmitz (Mapantsula, Paris, je t-aime), it is based on the international award winning novel 'Chanda's Secrets' by Allan Stratton.

Review: This moving and dramatic film is based on the infamous novel Chanda's Secrets.  The film is about a young girl and her tribulations through her younger years with the backdrop of the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Africa.  Chanda is portrayed by a riveting young actress, Khomotso Manyaka, who lights up the screen with her presence.   This film was dark and times and painful at others, but its a must-see to open our eyes to the horrors of the world.

Je'Caryous Johnson's Cheaper To Keep Her DVD Review

Synopsis: When a married couple is ready to call it quits, they always want different things. Raymond Mays wants a divorce and Morgan Mays wants alimony. When the fed-up judge decides Morgan deserves it all, the two face off with each other, only to discover it s easier to keep her as his wife. Brian McKnight and Vivica A. Fox star in the box office breaking, critically acclaimed stage play.

Review: This DVD is a filmed stageshow of the production of Cheaper to Keep Her.  Its a dynamic, humorous and dramatic look at divorce in the modern age.  The actors are all fantastic and their stage presence is phenominal.  I actually forgot I was watching a play at times, because they pull you right in.  This is a great production and a must-see.
