Evening Primrose DVD Review

Evening Primrose DVD Review

Synopsis: The people are gone. The doors are locked. Darkness descends inside a department store. Fleeing the pressures of the outside world, an unhappy poet is at last alone. But not quite. In his newfound sanctuary, he comes across a group of hermits who have been hiding there for years. Among them is a young girl with whom he falls in love.

Created especially for television, Evening Primrose aired only once on ABC Stage 67. Starring Anthony Perkins and Charmian Carr, the production featured a teleplay adapted by James Goldman (from a short story by John Collier) and a score that included some of Stephen Sondheim’s most hauntingly beautiful songs – among them “If You Find Me, I’m Here” and “Take Me to the World”.

This long-lost treasure is now available for the first time ever – impeccably restored and re-mastered from a pristine kinescope print.

Review: One thing that I love about DVD is that they can dig up things that you would’ve never otherwise seen and release them for us.  This film was made direct for television and aired only once back in the 1960s.  Now, this is before my time, so I never had the opportunity to see it…until now.

This film is and eerie and hauntingly beautiful work featuring Anthony Perkins and music by the great Stephen Sondheim!  Its dark and unique and an absolute gem.  You absolutely must own this film.

The special features on this DVD include Newly recorded video interview with director Paul Bogart Newly, recorded audio interview with Chamian Carr. Full color test footage with Anthony Perkins. Booklet with written contributions by Stephen Sondheim and Jane Klain of the Paley Center for Media.

With his boss closing in, and Margo and Lattie on the ropes, Ricardo is forced to choose between saving himself, and saving his only friends.

Review: We really enjoy independent films here at the Legion.  We watch a ton of them and after awhile, even they start to blend together.  One that has recently stood out to us that we’d like to give mention to is Harrison Montgomery.  This story is truly heartwarming in a real-world type of way.  It explores the human connection, lonliness, abuse and has a dramatic flare and a heart-felt emotion attached to it that we rarely see come across well on-screen.  Kudos to this film and we definitely recommend that you check it out.

The Six Wives of Henry Lefay DVD Review

The Six Wives of Henry Lefay DVD Review

Synopsis: After Henry Lefay is presumed dead, his daughter Barbara is left to make the funeral arrangements. But when his current wife and five exes wage a fierce power struggle over the burial, Barbara is hilariously caught in the middle. Starring Tim Allen, Elisha Cuthbert, Andie MacDowell, Jenna Elfman, and Chris Klein.

Review: Tim Allen is a great comedian.  I grew up watching his filthy stand-up routine and then saw him transition into family man in the Home Improvement series.  I’ve always enjoyed his feature films, he’s a likable guy.  Earlier this year we reviewed his very unknown film “Crazy on the Outside”.  Now, we’re checking out his latest feature “ The Six Wives of Henry Lefay”.

This movie is crazy!  Allen plays Henry, a man who basically marries every young girl he can find, much to the chagrin of his daughter, Barbie.  Barbie is our main character in the film and as her father dies, she tries to arrange a funeral, but the ex’s all show-up and insanity ensues.

This movie is funny, charming and very sexually charged.  It’s a great adult comedy.

The Addams Family Cartoon: The Complete Series DVD Review

The Addams Family Cartoon: The Complete Series DVD Review

Synopsis: Be delightfully miserable with the Addams Family as they take to the road in their Victorian-styled RV for spooktacular cross-country quests only they can conjure. From Nashville to New Orleans, New Mexico and Hawaii, these peculiar parents – Gomez and Morticia – treat their family to misadventures, including outwitting a band of gold thieves, freeing the animals from New York’s Central Park Zoo and racing a horse in the Kentucky Derby. They even win a piece of the moon and with Uncle Fester’s rocket, the trip will be a blast! You may remember them as “altogether ooky,” but the spirit of this family is contagious! Scream with joy over this 4-Disc, 16-Episode The Addams Family: Season 1!

Review: The Addams Family made their first appearance in animation format on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon Scooby-Doo.  The gang met the Addams Family and it was so popular that Hanna-Barbera developed a series just for the family.  It debuted in the early 1970s with a Scooby-Doo style sense of humor and went for just one season.   This new four-disc DVD set collects the entire original series, not to be confused with the later 1990s animated series.

The 1970s show consisted of the Addams Family traveling around the country in an RV styled after their Victorian home.  It was quite a sight.  The show is basically one comedy bit after another as the family gets in silly situations with normal people.  The show includes a laugh track and the animation style of the old Scooby-Doo show.  Its really fun to watch, and as a huge Addams Family fan, I'm so happy to have it in our DVD library.

Legends of the Super Heroes DVD Review

Legends of the Super Heroes DVD Review

Starring Adam West as Batman and Burt Ward as Robin

Available for the FIRST TIME EVER ON DVD, exclusively from the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_SuperHeroes

Synopsis: Heroes and villains of DC Comics square off in the two-part, live-action, made-for-TV (with a laugh track!) smackdowns of Legends of the Super Heroes. The Challenge: Batman and Robin (Adam West and Burt Ward of the live-action Batman TV series) lead The Flash, Green Lantern and more JLA members against The Riddler (Frank Gorshin reprising his TV role), Mordru, Weather Wizard and other Doom-dealers. The Legion’s ultimate gambit: trick the heroes into downing a diabolical depowering drink! The Roast: Poking fun beats swapping punches when celebrity host Ed McMahon emcees a rowdy rave-up. Who knew DC Super Heroes and villains packed as much verbal wit as physical grit when not locked in mortal combat? These Legends will leave you laughing.

Review: I was well aware of the old CBS special two-part Legends of the Super Heroes.  Its legendary in fan circles as one of the worst, most campy superhero features of all-time!   I had never actually sat down to watch it though, until it came out on DVD now from the Warner Archive.  I sat with the family and watched in horror as my favorite super heroes were prancing around the screen like lunatics.  This special is not funny...its hilarious!  You have to understand, of course, that it was meant as a parody to begin with.  There is some great jokes and moments that made us laugh out loud...as well as groan.  Half of the costumes are good.  You get Adam West, Burt Ward and Frank Gorshin re-visiting their roles from the 1966 Batman tv show.  Honestly, this special makes that show look like a serious drama!

Overall, this is a great piece of superhero history and definately something any collector should own.  I never thought we'd get an official DVD release of this one, but I'm sure glad that we got to see it in all of it's ....I should say glory, but shame is probably a better term! lol.

Los Angeles Lakers: 2010 NBA Finals Series Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: A rivalry renewed and a hotly anticipated rematch two years in the making! The 2010 NBA Finals exceeded the hype as the Los Angeles Lakers and the Boston Celtics, the two most successful franchises in NBA history, picked up where they left off in 2008 when the Celtics defeated the Lakers to earn the title. The Lakers, led by 2010 Finals MVP Kobe Bryant, took the series to Game Seven and, down by 13 points in the third quarter, came back to repeat as champions in the most-watched NBA game in over a decade. Relive the dramatic setbacks, comebacks, and late-game heroics of this epic series. This definitive box set contains all seven games in their entirety, with exclusive bonus features that are your all-access pass to both teams on the court and in the locker room.

Review: If you’re a fan of the LA Lakers, then you know that the 2009-2010 team is now the thing of legends in the history of basketball!  Fans of the Lakers are hardcore, with merchandise and collectibles.  Now, the ultimate blu-ray set to commemorate the winning season for the Lakers is available and I don’t think it could be any more complete.

This blu-ray set is unbelievable.  Not only does it feature all thrilling and tense games between LA and Boston, but it gives a TON of behind the scenes features, interviews, press conferences..everything a superfan could ever want from this experience.  Often times these so-called commemorative sets fall short.  This is NOT one of those occations.  This one rocks!  And in high-definition?  Doesn’t get better than that sports fans!

GI Joe: Countdown for Zartan DVD Review

This exclusive DVD presentation features 8 beloved episodes from the series that captured the imagination and hearts of boys and girls aspiring to make a difference in the world!

Review: GI Joe has been released several times on DVDNow, Mill Creek has got their mits on the series and we're starting to get some affordable DVD sets!  This first release represents 8 episodes from the classic show.  The picture quality is identical to Shout! Factory's release and this one is super-cheap!  I've even seen it for $5 at Target!  This is a fun throwback to a great old cartoon that holds up well.  Its also cheap for collector's to scoop up!  Go buy it!

Dollhouse: The Complete Season Two Blu-Ray Review

Dollhouse: The Complete Season Two Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: From creative mastermind Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer) comes the stunning final season of this sexy thriller that that will reveal all the secrets and complete your collection! As Dollhouse continues to provide its elite clientele with “actives”--human beings imprinted with the personas of whomever the client wants them to be--its mind-altering technology spins dangerously out of control. Now, an unlikely alliance must attempt to destroy the sinister corporation behind the facade. And, as the lovely, lethal active Echo (Eliza Dushku) struggles with the memories of her past, she must unlock the deadly secret that will ultimately determine the fate of all mankind.

Review: Dollhouse is a show that I've followed since it began.  I gave season one a great review and I greatly enjoyed the twist ending with alpha and echo!  I'm not a Joss Whedon fan, per say, but this show really struck a cord with me.  I don't know what it is, maybe I was bitter that Terminator: the Sarah Connor Chronicles was cancelled and this one spared, but I stopped watching in season two.

Once the Legion offices recieved this blu-ray I popped it in immediately and man did I miss out!  The second season of the show, which subsequently ends up being the final season of the show, really took off in the way of broadening the show's scope and the stories they were telling.  It was such a blast, its a shame we won't get a season 3.  The show looks best in blu-ray high definition, as does all things!

The special features on this blu-ray set include: Audio Commentary on 'Vows' by Joss Whedon and Audio Commentary on 'Belonging' by Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoe, Audio Commentary on 'Getting Closer' by Tim Minear - BD exclusive, Outtakes, Deleted Scenes, Defining Moments and Looking Back.

In Treatment: Season Two DVD Review

In Treatment: Season Two DVD Review

Synopsis: Golden Globe® Award-winner Gabriel Byrne stars in an all-new season of HBO’s acclaimed half-hour drama series: In Treatment. Set within the highly charged confines of individual psychotherapy sessions, the series centers around Dr. Paul Weston (Byrne), who recently divorced his wife Kate, and has moved from Maryland to a brownstone in Brooklyn, New York. Rebuilding his practice while wrestling with some of the demons he left behind – including a lawsuit filed by the father of Alex, a patient who died last year – Paul takes on several new patients. He also commutes to Maryland every Friday to continue his own sessions with Dr. Gina Toll (Emmy®/Oscar® winner Dianne Wiest).

Review: In Treatment is another one of HBOs absolute home-runs!  The network has taken the time to develop quality over quantity for years and this show is definately up to par!    If you have never seen the show before Gabriel Byrne portrays a therapist that struggles with his own personal life, as well as too much involvement in the lives of his patients, almost always portrayed by various celebrity guests.

This DVD release represents the second season of In Treatment, where we see more of the same personal issues and better developed dialogue.  The character has really found a voice and this show promises great viewing for some time to come.  If you've never seen In Treatment, then be sure to check it out on DVD now!

Naruto Uncut Box Set Season 3, Volume 2 DVD Review

Synopsis: Naruto has an irrepressible spirit, and even though his friend and teammate Sasuke has gone over to the evil Orochimaru, he's determined to carry out his shinobi duties. His missions include searching for Orochimaru's hideout, tracking an escaped prisoner, and saving a gold-mining town from a group of thugs. Then his leadership skills are put to the test when he takes Konohamaru and his pals on a training exercise to Mt. Takurami, where he gets them lost! Does Naruto have the chops to find his way out of a raging storm with a pack of eager young ninja in tow?

Review: Naruto will go down in history as one of the best anime series of all-time!  These uncut episodes are a great treat.  I never thought we’d be able to see the true full series.

This box set collects six volumes of Naruto Season Three, Uncut.  Its housed in a double-wide DVD case with six discs inside.  There are no inserts or other collectibles.  I would’ve definately scored it a perfect 5 out of 5 if they’d included anything for collectors in it.  This really feels like more of a bare-bones release just to collect the DVDs, which is fine.  It does keep the price lower, so thats definately a positive.

Naruto uncut is fantastic, full of action and if you dig Naruto at all you need to pick it up.  If you’ve never seen Naruto, check it out.  It has action and comedy blended into a very entertaining show.

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Blu-Ray Book Review

The Rocky Horror Picture Show Blu-Ray Book Review

Synopsis: Fasten your garter belt and come up to the lab and see what's on the slab! It's The Rocky Horror Picture Show Special Edition, a screamingly funny, sinfully twisted salute to sci-fi, horror, B-movies and rock music, all rolled into one deliciously decadent morsel. And now there's even more to make you shiver with antici...pation: two additional musical numbers, "Once In A While" and "Superheroes", never seen theatrically or available on video! The madcap, musical mayhem begins when rain-soaked Brad and Janet take refuge in the castle of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a transvestite mad scientist from outer space who is about to unveil his greatest creation - and have a bit of fun with his reluctant guests! Join Tim Curry, Barry Bostwick, Susan Sarandon and rock star Meat Loaf in the most popular cult classic of all time.

Review: The Rocky Horror Picture Show has gone down in history as not only the longest running theatrical film, but the top name in cult classic film!  We here at the Legion have dressed-up and gone out to a divey old theater for a showing of Rocky Horror more than once and maybe you have too!  Its a blast.

Shudder with antici................................pation!  We finally get the film on blu-ray!  The big question is...how does it look?!  Is it grainy and terrible or a clean and clear look at our favorite sweet transvestites?!  Its definately the latter of the two options.  Rocky Horror looks amazing on blu-ray.  The sound is corrected and is amazing and the picture quality is crisp, clear and detailed!   We ran into one technical issue when trying to play the blu-ray where it would freeze-up.  It turns out that the issue is that our BD live function needed to be disabled, since it wasn't hooked-up to the net.  This release is fantastic and here just in time for Halloween and the 35th Anniversary of the film!
The special features on the blu-ray set include: The Midnight Experience, Rocky-oke: Sing It! Robocop Trilogy Blu-Ray Review

Robocop Trilogy Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: RoboCop 1 - From the director of Total Recall comes a high-adrenaline,
“sleek” (Time) sci-fi thriller about a policeman who’s half man,
half machine. When a good cop (Peter Weller) is
murdered by criminals, innovative scientists piece him back
together as an unstoppable crime-fighting cyborg called
RoboCop. Tormented by the memory of his death, he is out for justice – and revenge.

RoboCop 2 - Robocop (Peter Weller) returns to battle his toughest
opponent yet: his replacement! But not only is the
new cyborg’s weaponry more sophisticated than
Robocop’s, it contains the brain of a madman! It will
take everything Robocop has to save Detroit -- and
himself -- from total destruction.

RoboCop 3 - It’s Megacop vs. Megacorp in this edge-of-your-seat
sci-fi action film. When a ruthless corporation that has
a stranglehold on Motor City begins kicking families
out of their homes for a new real estate project,
Robocop (Robert Burke) and a band of renegades
fight to save them in an all-out battle for Detroit.

Review: The Robocop Trilogy is one of those action franchises from the 1980s that is absolutely legendary.  This is a great year for classic franchises on blu-ray..everything from Aliens to Back to the Future!  Robocop tops the lists in the way of violence and action...and also in mixed feelings from the fans.  Robocop was a three film franchise and a successful toyline that really resonated with kids.

This release of all three Robocop films on blu-ray comes with it's share of controversy.  There is talk about the lack of extras that the DVD release of the trilogy had and the conversion quality.  We found that the films weren't perfect, but they were good and definately fun to watch.  I enjoyed seeing the movies again after so many years.   Every once in awhile I still pull out "I'd buy THAT for a dollar!" in my personal life and no one has any idea what I'm talking about.

Its rather ironic that kids were into Robocop.  Its ultra-violent and dark.  The films hold up well, although the third one is a bit off.  This is a great blu-ray set and definately one I will keep in our library!

Naruto Shippuden Box Set 4 DVD Review

Synopsis: Team Kakashi's spying mission brings them face to face with the Leaf's most deadly enemy, Orochimaru. Naruto's rage brings forth the Nine-Tailed Fox, but at great risk to both himself and those he cares for the most. With Naruto's rampage quelled, the team continues on to Orochimaru's lair to find Sasuke, but the mysterious Sai has disappeared. Could one of their own be planning the ultimate betrayal?

This release features episodes 40-53 of the anime series NARUTO: SHIPPUDEN on two discs, dropping in on the hero Naruto two and a half years following his training on the road with Jiraiya, as he returns to the Village Hidden in the Leaves ready to show off everything he's learned.

Review: Naruto was one of the best anime series of all time.  Then came Naruto Shippuden, which Is a whirlwind of action.   It’s a blast to watch Naruto really go to town on the Orochimaru!

Viz is collecting this series into box sets, this one being the fourth in the series.  It’s really nice to get these, as opposed to the single disc releases we’ve been seeing.  It’s a nice space saver, plus the quality of the packaging is far superior to the single disc releases and in the collecting world of anime, that’s everything.

If you enjoy the Shippuden series, like we do, these box sets are a no brainer!  We highly recommend.  This would also make a great Xmas gift!

Romeo + Juliet Blu-Ray Review

Romeo + Juliet Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Inventive, unconventional, controversial, Luhrmann’s Oscar-nominated adaption of William Shakespeare’s Romeo+Juliet finds the star-crossed lovers in the modern world of Verona Beach where Romeo drives a car and Juliet packs a gun. Set to a thumping soundtrack, amidst the threat of gunfire through and the delicate embrace of forbidden love, the audience is invited to drink from an intoxicating cinematic cocktail that takes them on a ride from Romeo and Juliet’s budding love, their first kiss, through to their separation and ultimate demise.

Considered a modern classic, this iconoclastic film adaptation that redefined the timeless tale for a new generation stars a pre-Titanic Leonardo DiCaprio (Shutter Island, Inception) and Claire Danes (The Family Stone, Shopgirl), as the youthful star-crossed lovers. The film went on to achieve box office success and widespread acclaim, a multi-platinum soundtrack album, and won four BAFTA Awards including the David Lean award for best direction and two Berlin Film Festival awards including the Silver Bear for Leonardo DiCaprio’s performance as Romeo.

Review: Romeo + Juliet re-invented the way that I saw literature as a kid.  I remember seeing this film as a teenager and being blown away.  Baz Luhrman took something as dull and cliche as Shakespeare and made it epic again.  He took a medium that is all but dead in the modern world and saw the beauty in it.  The hard-hitting music, the badass feel, I still can't believe that he pulled it off!

The blu-ray version of this film looks amazing.  Baz took the time to oversee the transfer personally and as such it turned out wonderfully.  This film and his epic Moulin Rouge are both on blu-ray now and they're ultra crisp, have no grain and fantastic sound!

The special features on this blu-ray release include: New High Definition Transfer supervised by Director Baz Luhrmann, Shaking Up Shakespeare Picture-in-Picture Mode with Audio, Commentary by Baz Luhrmann, Catherine Martin, Donald M. McAlpine and Craig Pearce and featuring Behind-the-Scenes Footage and Stills, Uncut Footage from the Bazmark Vault, Romeo + Juliet: The Music Documentary, Filmmaker and Interview Galleries and BD-LIVE**: Live Lookup™ powered by IMDb®

Moulin Rouge Blu-Ray Review

Moulin Rouge Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Widely credited with reinventing the modern movie musical, Moulin Rouge! exploded onto screens when it debuted in 2001. Celebrating some of the best-loved popular music of the twentieth century, the film found audiences ready to enjoy the same break-into-song storytelling currently enjoying its latest reincarnation in the popular television series Glee.

Along with a multi-platinum selling soundtrack led by the single “Lady Marmalade,” the film went on to broadly influence fashion, music, design and popular culture, and was nominated for eight Academy Awards® including Best Picture, winning two for Catherine Martin’s production design and costume design.

Nicole Kidman (The Hours, Australia) sizzles in her Oscar®-nominated role as Satine, the seductive courtesan and star of a popular French nightclub that caters to society’s decadent elite. When she unwittingly draws Christian, a struggling writer played by Ewan McGregor (Amelia), into her spell, true love turns to tragedy. Moulin Rouge! offers a kaleidoscopic ride through a world of song, dance, romance and drama that celebrates truth, beauty, freedom and above all things, love

Review: Moulin Rouge is the musical for people that hate musicals.  I mean that in a good way.  A lot of guys don't get into musicals, but Moulin Rouge is one of those amazing films that draws you in with modern music that is re-invented and used by the fi'm's characters in such a dynamic way that its ultra-enjoyable.  The movie examines the bohemian movement in Paris and centers around a tragic love story.  The characters sing tracks from everyone from Madonna to Elton John and the Beatles.

Moulin Rouge already has a great reputation.  Now, its coming to blu-ray and the big question is, how does it look?  Is this new version worth it?  A resounding YES comes from the Legion!  The film looks amazing in high-definition and the transfer is PERFECT.  Beyond perfect even.  The film looks great and this is the best possible way to own it!

Rumpole of the Bailey: The Complete Series Megaset DVD Review

Synopsis: All Rise! The Critically Acclaimed Legal Drama RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY holds court on DVD.

An immensely popular series broadcast on PBS from 1978 to 1992, RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY set a new bar for all courtroom dramas to come. Balancing suspense and satire as deftly as the scale of justice, Horace Rumpole tirelessly defends the downtrodden while undressing the upper classes. A timeless mixture of comedy and drama, RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY was one of televisions most celebrated courtroom dramas.

Flawlessly adapted by John Mortimer from his best-selling Edgar Award-winning novels, and starring the esteemed Leo McKern (A Man for All Seasons), this 14-disc DVD Megaset includes all 42 episodes from the seven seasons of RUMPOLE OF THE BAILEY.

Review: I had seen this classic BBC show back in the day a bit on PBS and through other sources (VHS), but this is one of those hard to find shows that is finally getting a proper DVD release!   Rumpole was the first great courtroom drama, it influenced shows like Boston Legal years later, but this one was the original.  Its funny in a very British sort of way, snarky at times and very dramatic in others.  Its a fantastic show and this would make a wonderful Xmas gift.

The special features on this set include: Feature-Length Bonus Movie Rumpole's Return; Mortimer's Musings--An Interview with John Mortimer; McKern's Memories with Actress Abigail McKern (Daughter of Leo McKern); Episode Introductions with John Mortimer; Spot the Barrister-Highlighting John Mortimer's Impromptu Appearances; Newspaper Evidence; John Mortimer Biography; John Mortimer Bibliography and Selected Credits; About the Old Bailey; Official Executioners of Newgate Prison

The Killing Machine DVD Review

Synopsis: If you thought he was hardcore in THE EXPENDABLES, he's now totally unstoppable as the KILLING MACHINE: Action icon Dolph Lundgren (ROCKY IV, UNIVERSAL SOLDIER) stars as Edward Genn, a divorced Vancouver father and investment broker who also happens to be the infamous KGB-trained assassin known as Icarus . But when his two worlds collide in a storm of bullets, bloodshed and betrayal by the Russian Mob, Icarus reloads for the most personal and punishing contract of his entire career. When revenge is not enough, how far will a one-man death squad go to get even? Stefanie Von Pfetten, Samantha Ferris (SUPERNATURAL) and Bo Svenson (INGLORIOUS BASTARDS, WALKING TALL) co-star in this bone-snapping, skull-blasting, badass throwback to extreme '80s action movies, directed by Lundgren himself!

Review: He's baaaaack!  Good ol' Dolph Lundgren has come back to save the action film.  Lundgren directs his fourth film and he's really starting to get the hang of this!  I hadn't seen ol' Dolph in anything since Universal Soldier until the Expendables came out and I remembered how much I loved him, be it as Punisher or in Masters of the Universe or Red Scorpion.  He was one of the best superhero-sized action stars back in the day.  Age has been kind to Dolph and he's delivering action in the new gore-era!  Thats right, the 80s cheese is gone, and now its loud music, intense action and people being ripped in two!  Good times.  This film is exactly what you think it is and thats a beautiful thing.  I will keep this in my DVD library and I definately recommend it for yours!

Review: Its a well-known fact that we love not only the blockbusters here at the Legion, but the smaller films too.  The smaller-scale ones often have more heart anyway.  This new one, Shoot the Hero, is a great example of that heart.  The film stars Jason Mewes, who you may remember as Jay from the Kevin Smith Clerks franchise and his great role in Zack and Miri Make a Porno.  Mewes is a favorite of ours, so we'll give anything he does a fair whirl.

This film really delivers in the way of story and action.  The characters develop well and the film keeps things rolling, so you never find yourself bored.  I can definately recommend this one to anyone looking for a good time.

Review: We love, love, love a good documentary here at the Legion.  Disneynature has really come through with Earth and the new Crimson Wing documentaries.   The newest documentary in the series, Oceans, is a fabulous and breathtaking look inside the water life all over the world.

Its hard to describe in words how amazing nature really looks in high-definition.  We watched this one with our children and they were blown away by the imagery and the sheer depth of what they saw.  One thing we really enjoyed about this special from Disneynature is that it isn't political or bogged down too much with text, its truly a feast for the eyes.

Bo Burnham: Words Words Words Comedy DVD Review

Bo Burnham: Words Words Words Comedy DVD Review

Synopsis: Bo Burnham is back with a new one-man show full of his patented songs and wordplay, as well as haikus, dramatic readings, blasphemy, and so much more in his first hour-long special, shot live in his home town of Boston.

Review: Bo Burnham is a pretty funny guy.  We watched this special when it aired on Comedy Central not long ago and it was a riot.  He spends a lot of time of the piano singing through carefully crafted and whitty songs that definately bring home laughs.  His stand-up is rather jarring at times, probably because of his rather meek appearance, but don't let that fool you, Bo can spew venom with the best of them!  This is a great DVD, if you already dig Bo you'll love this special and if you've never had the chance to hear his comedy, this is a great place to start!

"Men & Women"

Disneynature: Crimson Wing Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Disneynature: Crimson Wing Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: Discover one of nature’s last great mysteries in The Crimson Wing, a miraculous story of love, courage and survival from Disneynature – the studio that brought you Earth. In a place like no other on the planet, the dramatic and desolate Lake Natron in northern Tanzania, you’ll witness a spectacle unlike anything you’ve seen before – a million crimson-winged flamingos arrive to continue the circle of life.  Focusing on the adventures of a single chick set against a backdrop of never-before-filmed landscapes, The Crimson Wing is a visually stunning journey into the life and struggles of the mysterious and inspiring flamingo.

Review: We love documentary filmmaking here at the Legion and nature documentaries have become something of a great novelty in the era of high-definition.  What I never thought was that I would actually enjoy and be into an entire documentary on flamingos.  I couldn't care less about these birds prior to watching the special, they were little more than a tacky lawn ornamentation!  What I discovered, in spite of my ignorance, is that flamingos are in all actuallity very fascinating and complex creatures.

The scenery in this documentary is absolutely stunning.  The blu-ray really does justice to the beauty of the world, almost enhancing it in a way.  The colors are all vibrant and the music that accompanies the special is classic and modern all at the same time.  I learned everything from life patterns to environmental issues to the secret behind the color of the flamingo!  This was not only interesting, but it was entertaining.  Great work, Disneynature!

The special features on this 2-Disc BD Combo Pack (BD+DVD) include: Living Planet – Explore the Earth in a Fully Interactive Experience!, Filmmaker Annotations, The Crimson Wing screensaver and Lake Natron Diaries: Behind The Crimson Wing.

Pretty Maids All In A Row DVD Review

Pretty Maids All In A Row DVD Review

Synopsis: Oceanfront High School student Ponce de Leon Harper (John David Carson) is obsessed with sex. Fortunately, he meets lots of girls. Unfortunately, they all end up dead.

Written and produced by post-Star Trek Gene Roddenberry, and directed by Roger Vadim (Barbarella), Pretty Maids All in a Row is an outrageous, head spinning, flower-powered dark comedy/sex comedy/murder mystery that could only be produced in a decade like the 70s.

Playing a randy football coach, Rock Hudson headlines a top cast that includes Angie Dickinson as a sexy substitute teacher and Telly Savalas as a savvy homicide cop -sans lollipop. Sci-fi fans should look for appearances by Roddy McDowall (Planet of the Apes) as the High School Principal, and James Doohan ("Scotty" from Star Trek) as a State Trooper. If that's not enough, imagine the film's opening soundtrack featuring Chilly Winds, a song by the Osmonds. With everybody doin' it in this whodunit, Pretty Maids all in a Row needs to be seen to be believed.

Review: This movie is crazy!  I mean that in the best of ways.  This was a post-Star Trek departure for Gene Roddenberry, as he wrote an opus that is almost as dark, violent and sexual as A Clockwork Orange.  I think that this must've been a sign of the times during the transitional period of the 1970s.  I do have to say that I'm so glad that the Warner Archive is going back and releasing so much of this old film on DVD finally!  I would've never had to chance to see this rare film otherwise and it was truly entertaining.  Its most certainly not for prudes, as there is a lot of provocative material, but its a great ride.  I definately recommend.

Predators Blu-Ray + Digital Copy Review

Predators Blu-Ray + Digital Copy Review

Synopsis: Robert Rodriguez presents Predators, a bold new chapter in the Predator universe. Adrien Brody stars as Royce, a mercenary who reluctantly leads a group of elite warriors mysteriously brought together on a jungle planet. But when these cold-blooded human “predators” find themselves in all-out war against a new breed of alien Predators, it’s the ultimate showdown between hunter and prey.

Review: The original Predator was recently released in a great 'Ultimate Hunter Edition' blu-ray that we reviewed to high marks here on the Legion.  This year we also get the latest installment in the Predator franchise "Predators".  This film was produced by Robert Rodriguez and served as a merciful reprieve from the Alien vs. Predator disastors that have been coming out over the past few years.   What is great about the Predator franchise is that no characters carry over from film to film.  You don't need Sigourney Weaver, like you do in Aliens.  You don't need Arnold..you only need Predators!

Predators was cast very well and each character truly has a place.  People are dropped on an alien planet and wake up in mid-fall to the ground.  They don't know each other or why they are there.  It soon becomes clear that they are being hunted and they learn that they are on a giant game preserve used each season by the Predators.  They learn this the hard way, as they fall one by one both by Predators and other new and vicious creatures.  The end battle sequence is something to behold.   The film plays a lot of homage to the original 'Arnold fights the alien in the jungle' film, much to the delight of hardcore fans.  This one is highly recommended by the Legion.

The blu-ray is full of special features!  The blu-ray special features include: Disc 1: Blu-ray Theatrical Feature, Commentary by Robert Rodriguez and Nimród Antal, Motion Comics, Moments of Extraction,Crucified, Evolution of the Species: Predators Reborn, The Chosen, Fox Movie Channel presents Making a Scene, Deleted and Extended Scenes, Theatrical Trailer, Disc 2: Digital Copy

The Cleveland Show: The Complete First Season DVD Review

The Cleveland Show: The Complete First Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Everyone’s favorite neighbor is back in this hilarious Family Guy spin-off! When Cleveland Brown moves back to his hometown to start a new life with his old high school sweetheart, their fledgling family faces everything from crazy redneck neighbors to an outrageously overcrowded honeymoon in this uproarious animated romp!

Review: The Cleveland show is a spinoff of Seth MacFarlane's hit show Family Guy.  Cleveland is one of the secondary players on that show, but he usually comes through with some well-placed lines.  The voice acting on the character has this kind of drawl that makes you think he's a bit simple, but its masterful character acting.

The show is on it's second season now and is starting to really find it's place.  Its a great add-on to the Family Guy franchise.  If you enjoy Family Guy, you'll enjoy the Cleveland show.  Period.  Plus, the DVD set comes with a neat fuzzy mustache.  Who can resist that, right? This one is a home-run for fans of crude animation, such as myself.

Interest Range: Family Guy, Animation
