Travel to a new cosmos of comedy with Family Guy!

Review: Family Guy has been going strong for many years now.  The show was such a cult favorite that it was actually cancelled and then brought back on the air years later due to online fan demand.  This new volume of the show helps to collect the remainder of season nine to DVD.

In the first episode alone, a Halloween special, we have a racist blackface Cosby costume, incest and mom on mom violence.  This show continually manages to surprise me with how they keep the comedy flowing after all of these years.  The volume includes some extras, including episode commentary and video footage of Adam West's Hollywood Star ceremony!  This DVD is a great addition to any fan's collection.

Hysteria Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: HYSTERIA is a romantic comedy wrapped around the surprising story of the first electro-mechanical vibrator, invented by happenstance at a time when the very peak of Victorian prudishness coincided with the dawn of the electrical age. London. 1880. Dr. Mortimer Granville (Dancy) is torn between the "proper" doctor's staid and static world of success and acceptance and a more progressive and fulfilling, but frowned upon, experience. Tossed out for his forward-thinking ideas by the medical establishment, Granville finds a position with Dr. Robert Dalrymple, a highly respected and successful doctor, with a very popular private practice specializing in treating women diagnosed with Hysteria. In his new position, Dalrymple finds Granville a proper suitor for his beloved daughter Emily, the epitome of "English virtue and womanliness," with her lovely face, demure manner and artistic and intellectual accomplishments, but it is the elder daughter Charlotte (Gyllenhaal), a firebrand social reformer, arguing passionately for women's rights to be educated, vote, and live independent lives that secretly excites him. Although Granville is somewhat shocked by Charlotte's lack of propriety, he feels kinship with her conviction to help those in need. They snipe at each other's views, but he earns her grudging respect when he treats a poor settlement house woman with a broken ankle.

Review: This historical romance is centered around the creation of the first vibrator.  The film touches on some varied themes, such as sexuality, romance, modesty and even women's rights.   This film is absolutely charming, despite its risque themes, and really seeks to present the film not in a potty humor, but rather an innocent and naive manner that really ends up appealing to us as viewers.  This is a wonderful film and we highly recommend it.

Review: Kids seem to either love or hate Thomas.  My kids love him.  In fact, they love him to the degree that real-life trains are the most amazing things to them.  I halfway think they expect the trains to have faces, lol.  This new movie is one of the best Thomas films I've seen.  The dialogue is well done, the animation is great and the story really flows.  We get a nice mix of older and a few new characters, which is always fun for the little ones.  If you have a preschool-aged little one then this film is for you!  Its an absolutely wonderful and educational film that you can feel good about letting your child watch.

The Big Bang Theory: The Complete Fifth Season Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Regarding the opposite sex, they're on a steep learning curve. In every other sense, they're geniuses. Join physicists Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) as they ponder black holes, chemical deviations, girls, and other mysteries of the universe in all 24 phenomenally funny episode of the Season Five. With Penny (Kaley Cuoco) and Leonard's relationship in uncharted terrain, Sheldon, Howard (Simon Helberg), and Raj (Kunal Nayyar) discover that the feminine mystique is something that cannot be easily graphed or calculated. As they muddle through relationship "bugs" and romance re-launches, they also discover it's nothing a good roll of the D&D dice or a paintball tournament can't solve.

Review: The Big Bang Theory has proven itself to be a comedy with a far reach and the longevity that makes it worth investing your time and money into.  The characters are consistant and funny..the story arcs are well thought out and the show has even hit syndication at this point on TBS.  The cast has been expanded to include some nerdy girls now, which really helps the ackward factor.  Sheldon continues to delight with his ackward ego and obnoxious rantings.  This season is a great stride for the show with some great laughs.  This one is a must-have for any fan of the show.

Review: Lewis Black is an angry, angry man.  Nothing new there!  His latest stand-up special, "In God We Rust" is more of the same high quality rage comedy from the master himself.    He overturns topic after topic from religion and technology to politics.  Black is still on his game and is absolutely hilarious.  This special is well worth the time and money...a great watch.

6 Bullets DVD Review

Synopsis: Veteran mercenary Samson Gaul (Jean-Claude Van Damme) knows that in the heat of battle, every bullet counts. He retired from combat when his actions resulted in the deaths of helpless victims, but now he's the last hope for a desperate father. Mixed Martial Artist, Andrew Fayden (Joe Flanigan, Stargate: Atlantis) knows how to fight, but alone he's unprepared to navigate the corrupt streets of a foreign city to find his kidnapped daughter. Together, these warriors will stop at nothing to tear apart a vile network of criminals that preys upon the innocent.

Review: Ahhhhh!  Jean-Claude Van Damme!  Ahhh!  What else can the little boy inside me say?   I spent most of the 80s and early 90s fawning over every moment of his film library from Bloodsport to Lionheart and Hard Target.  Oh, the memories.  Its wonderful to see him back in the saddle and taking on bad guys again!  This film was full of gratuitous action and unnecessary violence...just as it should be.  Loved it.

Beyond the Black Rainbow DVD Review

Synopsis: Held captive in a specialized medical facility, a young woman with unique abilities seeks a chance to escape her obsessed captor.

Set in the strange and oppressive emotional landscape of the year 1983, Beyond the Black Rainbow is a Reagan-era fever dream inspired by hazy childhood memories of midnight movies and Saturday morning cartoons. From the producer of Machotaildrop, Rainbow is the outlandish feature film debut of writer and director Panos Cosmatos. Featuring a hypnotic analog synthesizer score by Jeremy Schmidt of Sinoia Caves and Black Mountain, Rainbow is a film experience for the senses.

Review: I was really blown away by Beyond the Black Rainbow.  I haven't seen a film this avant garde since A Clockwork Orange and Brazil!  In a very 70s and early 80s Kubrickian manner this film takes us on a trippy ride through science and the subconscious...its absolutely stunning visually and conceptually.  What a treat to see a film in this style after so many years.  We definately recommend.

Synopsis: It is the year 2149, and humanity is in the final throes of extinction. Those fortunate enough to escape are allowed to travel back in time 85 million years to an outpost known as Terra Nova. For the Shannon family, it's a chance to reunite and start over. But once there, they face giant, carnivorous dinosaurs, and mysterious forces conspire to destroy the entire experiment - and everyone involved in it! Contained in this 4-disc set is the entire groundbreaking series, including all-new exclusive behind-the-scenes content, a gag reel and much more!

Review: Terra Nova is one of those ambitious new types of series that need a few seasons to really get its flow going.  Unfortunately, the networks cancelled it before that could happen, so this DVD release is the full series, rather than just the first season.  There is talk of NETFLIX picking it up again, so stay tuned for that.  The show requires that you give it a few episodes to start caring about the characters, but once that happens, its a great ride and wraps you right up and leaves you begging for more.  The scenery is great..the dinosaurs look amazing and its great writing.  Win Win Win.

Review: I remember when Jaws 3D came out..it was the biggest deal.  Nowadays, we have all new 3D technology that far surpasses that of the past.   Bait 3D features some fantastic moments of thrills and suspense as a group of people thrown together through disaster try to survive being trapped with some desperate and hungry great white sharks!  The prognosis isn't good, lol.  The 3D in the film looks amazing.  Even if you don't own a 3D TV and blu-ray player just yet, this set also has a 2D blu-ray and DVD copy included, so you're all set for the future.  This one is a great watch and a ton of fun.

Synopsis: Eugene Stimpson is a superhero. Or, at least he plays one at birthday parties. His career hasn t helped much with the ladies, until he runs into an old school flame, Emily, who finds his career choice compelling. However, when Eugene s high school nemesis, Todd, gets a job playing a rival superhero, Eugene must keep his true identity hidden and finds himself competing for the affections of the same girl. Can he keep his identity concealed long enough to make his move and defeat Todd, or will the mounting lies be too much for him to handle?

Review: Super Hero Party clown is a crazy indie flick about a boy that dresses up as a superhero for childrens parties and must mask his identity while fighting his nemesis over a girl.   In a world where we see the same thing over and over again, while this had a cliche theme, the presentation was quirky and fun enough to really leave a great impression.  This one is a fun watch.

Where Do We Go Now? Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Set in a remote village where the church and the mosque stand side by side, WHERE DO WE GO NOW? follows the antics of the town's women to keep their blowhard men from starting a religious war. Women heartsick over sons, husbands and fathers lost to previous flare-ups unite to distract their men with clever ruses, from faking a miracle to hiring a troop of Ukrainian strippers

Review: Where Do We Go Now? is a release that came out last year in Lebanon.  The film highlights some of the absurdity and violence that religion brings to the world by showing a ficticious village where the Muslim and Christian men are always at odds.   The women of the village to their best to distract them in what are rather elaborate and often humorous ways.  This one is a great watch and a nice statement on culture.

The Halloween Tree DVD Review

Synopsis: Sit on the edge of your seat and enjoy master storyteller Ray Bradbury's classic adventure of four youths who try to save the spirit of their friend Kip from the ghosts of Halloween past. The four encounter a mysterious character, Moundshroud who takes them on a magical journey that sweeps them back as far as 4,000 years and touches down in exotic places all over the world like Egypt, England, France and Mexico. Along the way they discover the magic and meaning of Halloween - and friendship. This enchanting adventure features the voice talents of Leonard Nimoy as Moundshroud and the animation wizardry of Hanna-Barbera. It's a story as timeless as Halloween itself - a bubbling cauldron of thrills and suspense that will stir the imagination of the entire family. Bradbury's popular story is destined to become a perennial Halloween favorite.
Review: The Halloween Tree is a fantastic Halloween themed animated feature from 1993, based on Ray Bradbury's novel from the 1970s.  In fact, Star Trek creator Bradbury provides the voice of the narrator, while Leonard "spock" Nimoy provides another cast voice...that of the children's guide Mr. Moundshroud.  This one was well animated and a lot of fun....our kids enjoyed it thoroughly.  In an age when the holiday special is all but gone, this obscure and lost find, brought back by the Warner Archive, is such a treat!

Review: I tend to kick it old school.  I can get behind some new adaptations of old shows, but it took me some time to be okay with the Garfield Show.  I grew up watching Garfield and Friends...in fact I even own the show on DVD.   This newer incarnation of Garfield is all CGI, which was a little hard to get used to, but my kids love the show so much that I warmed to it soon enough.  This DVD features six episodes from the show that are either set during or themed around holidays.  You get two spooky episodes, one Thanksgiving-ish episode and three Xmas time episodes.   This one is a great and inexpensive DVD to share with your kids this fall/winter season and its a ton of fun!

Holy Flying Circus Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Holy Flying Circus reimagines the controversy surrounding Monty Python's 1979 film, Life of Brian, which was greeted with widespread outcry and accusations of blasphemy. Matters reached a head when Michael Palin and John Cleese agreed to take part in a BBC talk show about Life of Brian with a Church of England bishop and a staunchly Catholic broadcaster. The ensuing TV debate put the Pythons in their most absurd role yet: the voice of reason.

From Oscar®-nominated writer Tony Roche (In the Loop) and starring Darren Boyd (Little Dorrit), Charles Edwards (The Shell Seekers), Tom Fisher (The Illusionist), and Stephen Fry (Jeeves and Wooster), this fantastical docudrama is a Pythonesque peek behind the scenes of one of the most notorious-and beloved-films from the legendary troupe.

Review: Who doesn't love Monty Python?  The answer?  Anyone with taste loves Monty Python.  My wife and I saw Spamalot...twice.  We own every film..every episode of the Flying Circus..we watch Yellowbeard and even Gilliam's dark directoral works.  This, however, is something new for us.  This british import special from the BBC is a reenactment of a controversy that surrounded the making of the Life of Brian..something I was not privy to prior to watching the film.  I was pleasantly surprised to see how well done the depictions of the boys were and how quickly I was immersed and not noticing that they weren't themselves!  Not something I thought that I could do.  The film was funny, well written and very imformative to a big fan about an era that pre-dated me.  We recommend this for any Python fan..its a must see!

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time, Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.

Review: The Dark Knight Returns, Part One paints a phenominal picture of a tortured and hollow Bruce Wayne, trying desperately to keep the promise that had set the Batman into retirement for the past decade.  Now, with the mutant gang escalating their violence and Harvey Dent on the lamb, Bruce is pushed over the edge mentally and emotionally...and he must bring back the Bat.

Its truly a thing of beauty to watch as the animators bring the Bat back into this grim and dark Gotham.  He attacks from the shadows, sharp and brutal..just the way all good fanboys wish for.  The theme music is very Nolanesque and the action is intense.  They do a wonderful job of bringing this very 80s themed tale into the modern age.  Peter Weller's portrayl of the Bat is gritty, dark and grim.  Exactly what you'd imagine when reading the comics.

Its funny...as a kid and an adult fan I've read through the graphic novel dozens of times..it changed the way I viewed comic books.  And I figured watching this would be a little dull, since I am so familiar with the story....but they did such an amazing job of bringing this epic tale to life that I was riveted to the screen.  This is one of the best animated adaptations of Batman to date.  To watch this first part of the legendary saga was a breath of fresh air for me as a fan.  After the overhyped live action version out this summer, I felt let down.  This animated feature has revitalized my passion and has reminded me what I love the most about Batman.

Parental warning - this is not a children's Batman cartoon.  This is based on a very graphic comic and contains its share of cursing, violence and blood.

Loaded with unseen footage, revealing interviews, and innovative DVD bonuses, this unprecedented motion picture event is a must-own companion for anyone who loves TITANIC.

Review:  This breathtaking feature, filmed for IMAX theaters, is now available to own in your home!  If you're half the Titanic junkie that I am, you'll be thrilled about this one.  It features Titanic director James Cameron and Titanic alum Bill Paxton narrating the voyage that brings turbulant weather conditions on the top and occasional technical issues down below.   The star of his feature is without a doubt the wreckage.   We get the most in-depth and amazing look on the out and inside of the Titanic.  The special super-imposes some scenes from the legendary film to tell the tale of the wreckage as they go.   The 3D technology does wonders for the experience..it really feels at times like you're there..and to see what so few will ever seen in person in stunning 3D is such a treat.    One of the great things about this pack is that it comes with three formats of the special, so even if you don't yet have the 3D capabilities you can invest in this set for when you do and still enjoy this amazing special in 2D blu-ray or DVD.  The kids are learning about the Titanic in school, so we found this to be a great way to really drive some of the realities about the legend home and they got such a kick out of seeing it.  This one is a must have for all!

The Wrath of God DVD Review

Synopsis: The movie gods are playful in the action-oriented The Wrath of God – frisky, risky, violent, over the top and delivering a cast that includes Robert Mitchum, Frank Langella in an early-career performance and, in her last role, unforgettable Rita Hayworth. “This is the kind of movie we don’t see very often anymore: a simple, dashing tale told for sheer fun,” writes Roger Ebert in his Chicago Sun-Times review. Screen tough-guy Mitchum plays Oliver Van Horne, a U.S. priest on a supposed fund-raising mission in a strife-torn Latin American land. But if he is a priest, you might wonder about the machine-gun nestled in the case he carries. The pistol hidden in a Bible and the crucifix that serves as a lethal switchblade may also come in handy as he comes to the defense of people oppressed by a tyrant. God works in mysterious ways, says the combative man of the cloth. Especially if one of those ways is the enigmatic Van Horne.
Review: The Wrath of God is the type of film I enjoy..its straight and to the point.  It reminds me of films like Crank and Shoot 'Em Up...no fancy storywork..no frills..just great action, a fun plot and tons of entertainment.  This film was brought to DVD by the Warner Archive in their effort to bring lesser-known vintage cinema to DVD.  This can only be purchased on their website (see link above).  This marks the final film for Rita Hayworth, and that alone makes it a must-have.  This one is a great movie...a fantastic popcorn flick.

The Five Man Army DVD Review

Synopsis: Where this army leads, action fans – especially Spaghetti Western fans – will want to follow. Set during the Mexican Revolution, The Five Man Army is a niftily executed tale of mercenaries who, on behalf of rebel forces, take on a mission to rob a trainload of gold. Make that a suicide mission, because this train is heavily armored; armed with troops, cannon and machine guns, and traveling a route guarded by more soldiers. Peter Graves, then known for his role as mastermind Jim Phelps in TV’s Mission: Impossible, faces another odds-defying task as the Dutchman, leader of a handpicked commando squad consisting of a strongman, an explosives expert, a circus acrobat and a Samurai swordsman. Famed composer Ennio Morricone’s throbbing score amplifies the action of this ready-to-be-rediscovered film that, writes The New York Times’s Vincent Canby, is “for anybody who enjoys lean, taut suspense with no fiddling around.” All aboard!
Review: I've seen a lot of spaghetti westerns in my time.  In fact, I fancy myself a fan of them.  I hadn't seen this one yet, however, so I'm very happy that the Warner Archive decided to rescurrect it for a DVD release.  This is one of those releases that can only be purchased on their site online (see the link above).  The film centers around the Dutchman and his ragtag army of mercenaries that he's organized for a job and their violent escapades.  This was a fantastic film...well acted and even more well written.  Those writing duties, by the way, were done by a young Dario Argento...thats right..the same Argento that is considered the master of gore horror films.  Fun fact for you.  This one is a great watch and will please any fan of westerns.

Hawaii Five-O: The Second Season Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: HAWAII FIVE-0 is a contemporary take on the classic series about a new elite federalized task force whose mission is to wipe out the crime that washes up on the Islands' sun-drenched beaches.

Review: The first season of the new version of Hawaii Five-O was a great crime of the week drama set in a beautiful backdrop.  The second season is even better, even though it begins a little slowly, since the team was disbanded due to the events, the season really picks up with lots of great crime drama and action.  This show has definately proven itself to be a lasting hit for CBS Mondays!  Any fan of the show needs this season for their collection and if you haven't had the privilege of checking out this high octane crime drama, do yourself a favor and pick both seasons up today!

Do-Deca-Pentathlon Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Two grown men take sibling rivalry to new heights of hilarity in this winning comedy with heart. All bets are off during a family reunion when estranged brothers Mark (Steve Zissis) and Jeremy (Mark Kelly) secretly resurrect a decades-old quest to be the best. Determined to complete 25 outrageous events in order to crown a true champion, the exhausted pair find themselves leg wrestling, ping-ponging, and laser tagging to the finish line...while learning a few life lessons along the way. Written and directed by the comically competitive Duplass Brothers (Cyrus), The Do-Deca-Pentathlon brings home the gold - and the laughs!

Review: Do-Deca-Pentathlon is a hilarious sibling rivalry comedy from the writers of Cyrus.  Unlike Cyrus, Do-Deca is absolutely fantastic. This film has some great lesser known actors and a wonderful script and vibe that you might expect from a movie like Stepbrothers.  The laughs are abundant in this one and its definately a must-see.
