The Words DVD Review

Synopsis: "There's more than one way to take a life..." and THE WORDS couldn't be truer. Rory Jansen (Bradley Cooper) has achieved his every goal: a loving wife critical success and a best-selling novel. The only problem is he didn't write it. Now as his conscience starts to haunt him and his past wrongs are revealed it's difficult to tell fact from fiction. Jeremy Irons Dennis Quaid Olivia Wilde Ben Barnes and Zoe Saldana star in this romantic thriller that keeps you guessing until the very end.

Review: What happens when you take credit for something you didn't do?  A talented, but going nowhere writer stumbles upon some manuscripts and publishes them as his own.  He finds wild success, but then is being shadowed by someone else claiming to have ties to the scripts and he unravels as his conscience takes over.  Bradley Cooper shows another dimension in this one and Zoe Saldana gives mainstream audiences a taste of her great acting.  This one is a very solid and enjoyable film, we highly recommend.

Synopsis: When a New York City bicycle messenger picks up an envelope at Columbia University, a dirty cop becomes desperate to get his hands on it and chases the messenger throughout the city.

Review: This action flick is a great showcase piece for Joseph Gordon-Levitt.   On the surface the film is pretty simple..high-octane thriller about a messenger being chased through NYC, fearing for his life.  What makes this one so great is Levitt's screen presence.  He is the next big star and we'll be seeing a lot of him.  This film is a really fun watch, a great popcorn flick.

Resident Evil: Retribution 3D (Two-Disc Combo: Blu-ray + UltraViolet Digital Copy) Review

Synopsis: The Umbrella Corporation’s deadly T-virus is spreading across the globe, transforming ordinary people into legions of undead. Headed for extinction, the human race has just one hope: Alice (Milla Jovovich). She’s on a mission, fighting her way through cities and across continents, all inside Umbrella's prime research facility. Old friends become new enemies as she battles to escape and discovers that everything that she believes may not even be true.

Review: I love zombie flicks..and I loved the Resident Evil video games on Playstation back in the 90s.  I wasn't impressed with the first two Resident Evil films, but I really dug 3 and 4, so I figured I'd really be into this one, as well.   There were aspects of this film that were fun, but overall I was rather disappointed on every level.  The story just fell flat, the action wasn't that great and the film just kinda drug along.   If you're hardcore into Resident Evil, I'm certain that you'll dig it and the 3D aspect is wonderful.

The special features on this blu-ray include: Project Alice: The Interactive Database, Commentary with Writer/Director Paul W.S. Anderson, Milla Jovovich and Boris Kodjoe, Commentary with Writer/Director Paul W.S. Total Recall Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: Welcome to Rekall, the company that can turn your dreams into real memories. For a factory worker named Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell), even though he's got a beautiful wife (Kate Beckinsale) who he loves, the mind-trip sounds like the perfect vacation from his frustrating life - real memories of life as a super-spy might be just what he needs. But when the procedure goes horribly wrong, Quaid becomes a hunted man. Finding himself on the run from the police - controlled by Chancellor Cohaagen (Bryan Cranston), the leader of the free world - Quaid teams up with a rebel fighter (Jessica Biel) to find the head of the underground resistance (Bill Nighy) and stop Cohaagen. The line between fantasy and reality gets blurred and the fate of his world hangs in the balance as Quaid discovers his true identity, his true love, and his true fate.

Review: I was a fan of the original Total Recall back in the day, mostly because I loved Arnold movies.  That was back when my standards for movies were much lower!  Now, its painful to watch the old film, so I didn't have much hope for a remake..I just didn't see it.  I'm glad to say that I was wrong.  Colin Farrell is such a strong leading man that he carries this film into the modern age with honors!  They weave a fantastic take on the story and create an all new mythos in a world that has such fantastic special effects, amazing action and an all-star cast.  This is not just a great sci-fi film..its a great film.  We highly recommend it.

Butter Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In Iowa, butter carving is as cut-throat as a Presidential election, plagued with scandal, greed, blackmail, and sex -- except with butter! When long-reigning champion butter sculptor, Bob Pickler (Ty Burrell), is forced to step down, his zealous wife, Laura (Jennifer Garner) enters the competition herself, to fight for their status as butter royalty. A win seems virtually guaranteed for the poised and studied candidate when a formidable contender emerges: the fresh-faced, effortlessly charismatic 10-year-old Destiny (Yara Shahidi), an African-American foster child of local couple, Jill and Ethan (Alicia Silverstone and Rob Corddry). Suddenly, it's anybody's game and Laura will do anything to win -- even if it means resorting to sabotage and seducing her foolish ex-boyfriend Boyd (Hugh Jackman) as a co-conspirator.

Review: In the recent tradition of ackward comedy like Little Miss Sunshine and Running With Scissors, Butter is a bizarre and quirky faux docu-comedy with a strong cast and a great plot.  The cast shines with a huge ensemble of experienced players like Jennifer Garner and Alicia Silverstone.  Butter focuses on the competitive and rather insane world of butter sculpture competitions.. Yeah, thats right!  This film is definately off-beat, but its hilarious and well worth the watch.

Forced To Fight Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: World kick-boxing champion Gary Daniels (The Expendables) stars with Peter Weller (RoboCop I & II, TV’s Dexter) in the adrenaline-fuelled mixed martial arts action-thriller FORCED TO FIGHT. Once a legend in the brutal world of illicit underground fighting, Shane Slavin (Daniels) decides to turn his life around, promising his wife and young son he’s fought his last battle. But when his younger brother betrays a ruthless crime boss (Weller), Shane is forced back into the arena to pay his brother’s debts and to protect his family. Now Shane must confront a gauntlet of incredibly savage, no-holds-barred fights with no rules, no mercy and just two possible outcomes: win… or die fighting

Review: I've seen a lot of martial arts films in my day.  To that end, I've seen a lot of martial arts films that are based on  underground fighting rings.  This is the latest in that line of fun films.  What makes this one stand out is the modern feel and the villain...oh, the villain.  Peter Weller (Robocop) plays the bad guy on this one and he is so creepy, he really makes the film.  This one has some great action and fighting and is definately a fun watch for anyone into the genre.

Ice Age: Continental Drift Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: History's greatest heroes return for the most outrageously funny and entertaining Ice Age adventure in two million years. When Scrat's acorn antics cause a cataclysmic crack-up, Manny (Ray Romano), Sid (John Leguizamo) and Diego (Denis Leary) go where no herd has gone before - on a high-seas quest aboard a floating iceberg. But a menagerie of misfit pirates are determined to shiver their timbers and capsize their journey home. Join a boat-load of lovable new characters (voiced by Jennifer Lopez, Aziz Ansari and Peter Dinklage) for original songs, spectacular animation and heartwarming family fun.

Review: There are few animated franchises that can do sequel after sequel and maintain any level of quality...Ice Age is one of those franchises.  I swear, it just keeps getting better and better.  Our kids never tire of the great cast of characters and the new ones brought in each film and this one is no different with the introduction of very scary misfit pirates (bad monkeys, as my three year old calls them).  The story is solid and funny and a great time!  This one is a no-brainer!  We highly recommend it.

Men in Black 3 (Three Disc Combo: Blu-ray 3D / Blu-ray / DVD) Review

Synopsis: In Men in BlackT 3, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back... in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K's life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him -- secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.

Review: We're big fans of the Men in Black franchise here at the Legion.  We greatly enjoyed, and still love, the original 1997 film and even the cartoon from the late 1990s!  MIB II wasn't so great in our opinion, but we were certainly open for a rebirth with the third installment, and boy were we pleased!  MIB 3 brings back all the great writing and magic to the franchise that it deseves!  The villain, Boris the Animal, is played by the great and always hilarous Jemaine Clement (Flight of the Conchords).  He does a phenominal job of creating a bizarre and creepy villain without going over the top into being cheesy or cliche!  Will Smith is back and is smooth as ever...its great to see Tommy Lee Jones reprising his role, as well.  Josh Brolin debuts as the young Agent K in the past and does a beyond phenominal job!  This one ties in some of the mythos and past stories of the characters and most definately does NOT disappoint.  Not to mention, it looks AMAZING in 3D...thats the best way to watch this film.  The nice thing about a combo pack like this one is that its an investment...you can watch the DVD or 2D Blu-Ray if you don't yet have 3D capability and then down the road when you do get it..you're already all set!  This one is highly recommend and would make a great Xmas gift idea!

Crammed with a whole new dimension of extras not shown on TV, this cosmic collection includes 13 bizarre and brilliant episodes involving ancient prophecies, Presidents' heads, robot gangsters, angry butterflies, and of course, sausage-making. It's a shipload of futuristic fun!

Review: Futurama is back with more great DVD offerings!  This DVD set gives us 13 more episodes of the same great comedy that fans of the show have come to expect.  In fact, these are some of the better episodes out there, in our opinion.   This is one of those great, non-serialized shows, so you can just pick and episode or two to watch, no order is necessary, so even if you haven't collected previous volumes, you can pick right up and grab this one.  It'd also make a great Xmas gift idea!

Synopsis: Wu Dang, a place where the treasure of martial arts TAI CHI originated. In early Republican China, rumors were going around about the treasure in Wudang Mountain. An American conspirator took his well-trained kung fu daughter to Wudang by sponsoring a Taoist martial arts competition, to steal the treasure. Out of expectation, a disciple represented Wudang to compete with other martial arts masters for the championship.

Review:  This adventure film has a backdrop of martial arts, but in all honestly is more of a treasure hunting film.  A greedy father takes his daughter to Wu Dang to compete, all the while he is looking to seek out a hidden treasure!  This is a very well-made chinese language period film.  We found the acting to be fantastic and the story, while somewhat basic, very entertaining.

Synopsis: Teeming with magic, beauty and pure joy, this crowd-pleasing winner at the Sundance Film Festival has emerged as one of the year's most acclaimed films. Newcomer Quvenzhan‚ Wallis delivers an "Oscarr-worthy performance" (Philadelphia Daily News) as Hushpuppy, the six-year-old force of nature in an isolated bayou community. When her tough but loving father Wink (Dwight Henry) succumbs to a mysterious malady, the fierce and determined girl bravely sets out on a journey to the outside world. But Hushpuppy's quest is hindered by a "busted" universe that melts the ice caps and unleashes an army of prehistoric beasts.

Review: Beasts of the Southern wild is one of the most remarkable and unqiue film adventures we've ever had the pleasure of partaking in.  This film is an amazing narrative of the human spirit as we see a ravaged and brutal world through the eyes of magic and wonderment of a young child named Hushpuppy.  This film builds on what Terry Gilliam was doing with Tideland.  We cannot recommend this film enough, its absolutely stunning.

Synopsis: When a massive comet strikes the Sun, it knocks Mercury out of orbit and sends it hurtling towards Earth. But each day the now-magnetized planet gets closer, it triggers gravitational chaos around the world: Flaming meteors crash into the ground. Automobiles are sucked into the sky. And the worst is still to come. Can a disgraced scientist (Kirk Acevedo of ''Fringe'') and the lone surviving crewmember (Diane Farr of ''Californication'' and ''Numb3rs'') on a crippled space shuttle stop this Extinction Level Event by re-activating the top-secret planetary defense system known as 'Project 7'? Andrew Airlie (''Reaper'') and Jessica Parker Kennedy (''The Secret Circle'') co-star in the out-of-this-world Syfy Original from the director of ICE QUAKE, POLAR STORM and STONEHENGE APOCALYPSE

Review: I remember the days when sci-fi was a very specific genre that often required us to suspend our belief in what we currently know about science and space in order to be entertained.  Collision Earth harkens back to that time.  The graphics aren't stellar, but the story and characters bring me back to a time when B movies were B movies.   It reminds me of when Syfy Channel was Sci-Fi Channel (nerd humor) and the films were based on their merits of entertainment.  Yes, the physics behind this are unquestionably fictional, but of course this is a movie!   Its fun, action packed and definately a great watch.

Synopsis: When Brian, a hopelessly uncoordinated young fan magically switches talents with his basketball hero (NBA Superstar Kevin Durant, playing himself), he becomes the star of his high school team while Kevin Durant suddenly can’t make a shot to save his life. But with the playoffs approaching, Brian learns that being a true winner involves working hard at your own game, and he tries to make things right in time to prevent a catastrophic end to his hero’s season.

Review: We're not big sports fans or sports movie fans here at the Legion, but films like Thunderstruck help to broaden our perspective.  NBA star Kevin Durant is a pretty decent actor, albeit playing himself, and the kid Brian is a joy to watch.  This is a cute film about a kid who magically changes talents with his favorite pro basketball player and the hijinks that ensue for him and the upset for the player.  This one was charming, funny and definately a great family film.

WWE: The Attitude Era DVD Review

Synopsis: Bust out your Austin 3:16 shirt, strike a 5-second pose, heat up a delicious slice of pie and countdown to Y2J all over again with The Attitude Era. Go back to the days of debauchery when radical antiheroes ditched saying their prayers and taking their vitamins for opening up a can of whoop ass and laying the SmackDown; when rebels ruled the airwaves and PG stood for puppies and grapefruits.

This 3-disc slobberknocker is packed with all the action that pushed censors to new limits, shattered cable TV ratings and crushed WWE's competition like a Spanish announcer's table.

Review: We're wrestling fans here at the Legion and there really isn't any comparison to the entertainment provided by WWE.   This new DVD release spotlights the "Attitude Era" where WWE changed from the superhero bubblegum show to the badass anything goes show.  This was to compete with the great nWo angle that WCW had been banking on and boy did it work.  A majority of fans flipped back and forth between Nitro and Raw on Monday nights to see what would happen next!   I personally was not one of those people, I was Nitro and WCW all the way, so it was fun to watch this great documentary, packed with a bunch of matches that I missed during the era.  I found the documentary to be really well done and it filled me in on so much that I missed as a wrestling fan.  I highly recommend it!

    Featuring:

    - The Austin/McMahon rivalry
    - The invention of Hell in a Cell, TLC, Brawl for All and more
    - The revamping of Superstars' entrance music
    - All the top stars such as The Rock, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Mick Foley (all three of them!), DX, Undertaker, Edge & Christian, Chris Jericho, Trish Stratus, The McMahons, Kane, The APA, Sable, Goldust, Val Venis, and more!

    nWo: The Revolution DVD Review

Synopsis: In the mid-90s a malicious group of renegades "invaded" World Championship Wrestling shaking the landscape of the sports-entertainment world and turning the tables of the Monday Night War. Little did anyone know the shock of the century was yet to come. When Hulk Hogan did the unthinkable and turned his back on the fans The Outsiders had officially become the New World Order and chaos ensued.

Review: I am a self-proclaimed wrestling fan, ever since I was a kid in the glory days of the 1980s, saying my prayers and taking my vitamins by the word of the Hulkster.  I eventually grew disinterested with it as I hit puberty and beyond, and my former heroes had mostly been disgraced in the WWE steroids scandal and knocked from their role model pedistals.   When Hulk Hogan came to WCW they came up with an angle that shocked the world..Hulk turned heel.  And not only heel..THE heel with THE upstart rebellion the nWo.  The nWo took wrestling by storm by first introducing an element that felt real and was certainly growing in seriousness with it's audience from the 80s.  I was drawn back into wrestling with WCW and followed the nWo to the end.  I was a Wolfpac Red and Black man myself.  This DVD is a wonderful overview of this golden era in wrestling with a great documentary and a nice handful of matches that commemorate the era, including Hogan's infamous turn at Bash and the Beach in the mid 1990s.  I enjoy the documentary, but a few things they said I take umbridge with as a fan, for example they listed brining in Rodman, Karl Lewis and Jay Leno as highlights and I saw those all as cheap and really damaging to their brand and it's credibility.  Overall, this set is fantastic, though, and a MUST have for any wrestling fan!

Review: Kaijudo is a great new relaunch of the classic Duelmasters series.  I'm well aquainted with these card games, as my oldest son is really into them.  He went from Pokemon and graduated up to Yu-Gi-Oh back in the day, and this latest series, Kaijudo, is perfect.  He loved the show and the card game is equally entertaining for him.  We definately recommend this new DVD, which showcases five episodes from the new show.

This DVD set includes the following episodes: The Natural, Part 1, The Natural, Part 2, The Natural, Part 3, Om Nom Nom and The Hunted.

    Silent Night Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In 1984, the slasher classic Silent Night, Deadly Night stunned audiences, was banned across America, and remains the most notorious Christmas movie in history. Now, Santa is back, and he's got a brand new bag of tricks. As their small Midwestern town prepares for its annual Christmas Eve parade, Sheriff (Malcolm McDowell of Halloween) and his deputy (Jaime King of My Bloody Valentine 3-D and ''Hart Of Dixie'') discover that a maniac in a Santa suit is murdering those he judges as ''naughty.'' Their sins? Porn, adultery, greed... And he will make sure they rest in heavenly pieces. Donal Logue (Shark Night 3D ), Ellen Wong (Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World ), Lisa Marie (The Lords of Salem), and Brendan Fehr (''CSI: Miami'') co-star in this brutal and darkly humorous tale of Christmas gone bad.

Review: Remember back in the day when Silent Night, Deadly Night was all the rage?  I remember every kid in school was trying to see it!  Anytime they ban a horror flick, people just flock to it.  This one is a loose re-make of Silent Night and I'm mixed about it.  Firstly, I have some loyalty to the original 80s version, but this one is honestly far better in acting quality and all around tone.  The film does a great job of delivering on the murder and is certainly violent enough to appease any horror fan.

Amidst the chaos Koldo and Clara become separated and begin a desperate search for one another. What started off as an idyllic day quickly descends into a nightmare of the worst kind

Review: I'm a moderate fan of zombie flicks.  I watch the Walking Dead and I've enjoyed the Shaun of the Dead spoof and Zombieland...the Rec series is something else all together.  This Spanish made film isn't about some virus or the walking dead...the zombies are demons.  Yeah.  They're fallen angels.  Ok.  Well, its spanish and crazy, right?  Well, regardless the film is fun, full of action and gore and lots of good zombie kills..just try to ignore the religious crap.  Overall this third in the series is a fun watch.

Celebrity Trials in the Media DVD Review

Synopsis: CELEBRITY TRIALS IN THE MEDIA confronts one of the most pressing issues facing the modern television news business today -- the need to deliver big ratings that drive advertising revenue and a new definition of news. Celebrity trials are big business, and when the news media comes to town to cover sensational cases, lives are changed and ethical barriers are shattered. If a celebrity is involved, an otherwise unnoticed case of drunk driving, insider trading, rape, or even murder gets more national and local coverage than the real news of the day. Director Brian Malone was granted unprecedented access to the journalists scrambling to cover the rape trial of Los Angeles Laker Kobe Bryant in 2004. From his behind-the-scenes vantage point in the tiny town of Eagle, Colorado where the trial took place, Malone captures a pivotal moment in the news-gathering business -- when celebrity justice became a staple of reality television. The same year, the child molestation trial of singer Michael Jackson in Santa Maria, California, saw 1,800 journalists take extraordinary efforts to report on little but the screaming throngs of fans and footage of Jackson and his entourage entering and leaving the courthouse. In CELEBRITY TRAILS IN THE MEDIA, notable news reporters candidly share the challenges and ethical dilemmas that arise when the camera lights go on and the deadline to deliver a compelling news story, nearly 24 hours/7 days a week, arrives.

Review: I'm constantly disgusted by the actions of most celebrities, especially when it involves the law and the glamorization given to their misdeeds.  This great new documentary examines the ethical issue surrounding the media while covering these celebrity trials.  I found this to be very informative and interesting to watch, although maybe slightly ironic.  Still, a great watch.

    CHiPs 99 DVD Review

Synopsis: Attention all units: the lights are flashing, the bikes are roaring and after 15 years, there’a a lot more freeway to patrol! But there’s not so much interstate that California Highway Patrolmen Ponch and Jon can’t cover it when they again go wherever the rubber meets the road in CHiPs ’99. Larry Wilcox returns as straight-arrow officer Jon Baker and Erik Estrada reprises his role as free-spirited Frank “Ponch” Poncherello in this 15-year reunion that adds a ‘90s sensibility to the can’t-miss elements that made the 1977-83 CHiPs TV series a fan-pleasing success: cool motorcycles, freewheeling fun and widespread disregard for the California traffic code. This time, that disregard turns dangerous. Ponch and Jon confront an automobile hijacking ring that may be the ultimate in road rage!

Review: I watched a lot of TV as a kid and one of my favorite live action shows was CHiPS!   There was nothing like watching Ponch and Jon go after bad guys on the highways of California.  Lots of great 80s action and fun for a little boy.  I had no idea that they made CHiPS '99 until this DVD was released, but I couldn't be happier.  This follow-up to the show updates the music, action and sequences to the 90s when the guys chase down a highjacking ring.  Its great to see what came of two of my favorite characters from back in the day!  I highly recommend this one for any fan of the show, you can only get it online at WBshop.com!

The Watch Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: There's trouble brewing in peaceful Glenview, Ohio. That's why four civic-minded citizens, armed with flashlights, walkie-talkies and spiffy new jackets, have teamed up to safeguard their community. But the guys find more than they bargained for when they uncover an alien plot to destroy Earth, and now these bumbling heroes are Glenview's only chance to save the neighborhood - and the world - from annihilation!

Review: We're always looking for good quality comedy here at the Legion.  The Watch comes packaged with a solid cast of funny men with Stiller and Hill.  Honestly, Vaughn annoys me, but he works fine in this film.  The Watch is a great film about a group of social misfits that organize to fight back against a grisly murder in their town.  The film quickly becomes an alien battle film, which isn't exactly left field, but its rather hilarious.  This one is a great laugh and a fun watch.

    Sparkle Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: Sparkle is a timeless story of the bonds of family, the trials of success and the power of music. In her feature film debut, "American Idol" sensation Jordin Sparks stars as Sparkle, a young woman whose big dreams seem almost impossible. She's been warned against the pitfalls of the music industry by her protective mother (Whitney Houston), yet encouraged by the handsome and ambitious Stix (Derek Luke), Sparkle forms a trio with her sisters (Tika Sumpter and Carmen Ejogo). Together, they perform the soul-stirring songs that Sparkle pens. But as their fame grows, so does the risk of jealousy, self-doubt and insidious temptation. This sweeping drama is brought to life with a powerful cast including Mike Epps, Omari Hardwick and CeeLo Green

Review: Sparkle is the cautionary tale that is a great amalagram of so many musical groups of yesterday.  They start out nieve and full of dreams and eventually learn of the betrayl and corruption that can come along with them.  This is of note, of course, because its one of the last times you can see Whitney Houston on screen since her passing.  The cast in this one is great, the story is timeless and a bit cliche, but still relevant and interesting and the songs are top notch.  This one is a great watch.

    The special features include:

  • Commentary with Director/Producer Salim Akil
  • Extended performance of “Hooked On Your Love” by Jordin Sparks
  • A Tribute to Whitney Houston
  • A Dream Come True
  • Sparkle & Shine
  • A Sparkling Performance
  • "Celebrate" Music Video By Whitney Houston & Jordin Sparks

  • Interest Range: Drama, Music
