Platoon (two-disc blu-ray + DVD combo) Review

Synopsis: PLATOON tells the extraordinary journey of Private Chris Taylor (Sheen), a young, naive American who arrives in Vietnam and quickly discovers he must battle the Viet Cong alongside the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him.  His two commanding officers (Oscar®-nominated Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other.  Meanwhile, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value: life

Review: Platoon is one of the finest war films of all time.   This one put Oliver Stone on the map as a director of darkness and grit.  The Vietnam War was shown in movie format for the first time in all its darkness...and the world never forgot it.  Were parts of it over the top?  I don't know, probably, but this one really made the non-glorious realities of war apparent.

This was a Winning breakthrough performance for Charlie Sheen, and of course it features the great Willem Dafoe.  The blu-ray transfer looks absolutely fantastic.  They really took care to ensure that the high-definition would really come across.  The color, what there is, pops and there is no visible grain.

The special features on this set include: Disc 1: Blu-ray Feature: **Audio Commentary by Director Oliver Stone, **Audio Commentary by Military Advisor Dale Dye, **Deleted and Extended Scenes with Optional Commentary by Oliver Stone, **Flashback to Platoon: Snapshot in Time: 1967 – 1968; Creating the ’Nam; Raw Wounds: The Legacy of Platoon, **Documentaries: One War, Many Stories; Preparing for ’Nam, **Vignettes: Caputo & the 7th Fleet; Dye Training Method; Gordon Gekko and **Theatrical Trailer and TV Spots and Disc 2: DVD.

Rookie Blue: The Complete First Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Serve. Protect. Don’t Screw Up.

At the police academy they trained together. Now they’re on the job together. Rookie cop Andy McNally (Missy Peregrym, “Heroes”) and her fellow new recruits are ready to brave anything, but in the world of big city policing, even the smallest mistake can have life-or-death consequences.

Review: Rookie Blue is the newest in a long-line of crime/cop dramas to hit network television.  This one airs on the ABC network.  This one has its fair share of drama!  Its been referred to as Grey's Anatomy with guns!  I cannot agree with that asessment more!

The loss of NYPD Blue years ago has left a deficit in crime/police drama that has never been filled.  Rookie Blue may not completely fit this bill, but it certainly helps fill in some of those gaps!  The show really indicates how tough it can be starting out and blends action, drama and comedy all in one!  This is a great new show and you can get caught up before season two hits the air!

Bonus Features: Making-of Featurette, Cast/Crew Interviews, Behind-the-Scenes Footage.

The History Channel: Reagan DVD Review

Synopsis: Americans know President Ronald Reagan’s politics, his policies, and his oratorical prowess. But as we approach what would have been his 100th birthday in February 2011, the totality of the legacy of America’s 40th president is still eclipsed by the myth. While some say he’s a hero, and others call him an empty suit, one thing is for certain – President Ronald Reagan made history. But what made him? Using rare archival footage and personal interviews with those who knew him best, REAGAN goes beyond the myth to reveal the epic story of an unforgettable man who, against all odds, rose to the pinnacle of power.

Review: The History Channel really makes the best documentaries, and this one is no exception.  The quality and the presentation is fantastic.  If you're a fan of the late ex-president, then this is sure to please.  Personally, I was around in the 1980s and I remember what a horrible job this one did, but I won't get into politics here.  Hands down, this is informative and well-made.

I Am Number Four 3-disc (Blu-Ray + DVD + Digital Copy) Review

Synopsis: Three are dead. Who is Number four? From Director D.J. Caruso (Disturbia), producer Michael Bay (Transformers) and the Emmy-winning writers of TV's Smallville, comes this gripping, action-packed thriller. John Smith (Alex Pettyfer) is an extraordinary teen masking his true identity to elude a deadly enemy sent to destroy him. Living with his guardian (Timothy Olyphant) in the small town he now calls home, John encounters unexpected life-changing events - his first love (Dianna Agron, TV's Glee), powerful new abilities and a secret connection to the others who share his incredible destiny. Complete with deleted scenes and more, I Am Number Four is an explosive suspense-filled ride that will take you to the edge of your seat and beyond.

Review: The fantasy genre is always looking for another great entry..I am Number Four is just that for the teen Twilight-loving crowd.  The film introduces a few characters, most of which are intertwined in some type of love triangle.  The basic premise is centered around aliens that are being exterminated.  The ending kinda blows up larger than the whole of the film with an epic battle that really redeems some of the earlier nonsense moments.  Overall, its a great watch.

The special features on this set include: DVD: Becoming Number 6, Bloopers, 1-Disc BD & 3-Disc BD Combo Pack (includes all DVD bonus PLUS), 6 Deleted Scenes, with introductions by Director D.J. Caruso, Extended Strangers in Paradise, Sam's Mom, Worth Mentioning, Power Prank, Trying to Connect and Extended Warsaw Basement.

The FBI The First Season Part One DVD Review

Synopsis: From the files of the crime-fighting agency! Drawing in large part from actual Bureau investigations, The FBI is on the case with an exciting 4-Disc Collection of Season One’s First 16 Episodes from the fondly remembered series that ran from 1965 to 1974. Agent Lewis Erskine (Efrem Zimbalist, Jr.) and Special Agent Jim Rhodes (Stephen Brooks) rely on real-life FBI detection techniques (and the occasional hunch) as they track lawbreakers ranging from organized crime bosses and extortionists to saboteurs and escaped convicts. Among the guest stars for this trend- and tone-setting early installments are Robert Blake, Beau Bridges, Dabney Coleman, Robert Duvall, Jack Klugman, Leslie Neilsen and Burt Reynolds.

Review: FBI was a vintage television action show that featured the great Efrem Zimbalist, Jr., who would later famously go on to voice the butler Alfred in the cult favorite cartoon Batman: The Animated Series.  He plays special agent Erskine with dignity and cunning.  The show follows a team of FBI agents as they chase the criminals of the day.  In fact, on some episodes there was a proceeding clip of the star of the show giving a picture and information on a real-life FBI's most wanted criminal.  This would later be replicated on the tv show "America's Most Wanted".   This DVD is a great blast from the past and one of the best original cop shows.

Passion Play Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Nate Poole (Rourke, The Wrestler, Iron Man 2) is a washed-up jazz musician fleeing from trigger-happy gangster Happy Shannon (Murray, Lost In Translation, Get Low).  While on the run, Nate stumbles across a traveling carnival, and is instantly mesmerized by the carnival’s prized attraction, Lily “The Bird Woman” (Fox, Transformers).   But Lily is no carny fake: her wings are real.  The fugitive musician falls in love with this angelic creature, and he convinces her to leave with him, to the anger of her ruthless employer Sam (Ifans, Notting Hill).  The two flee across the desert, but towards...what? Their destruction? Their salvation?

Combining realism and myth, Passion Play is a portrait of humanity at its best and worst.  Gritty and hard-boiled, it is also an adult fairytale that promises hope in the unlikeliest of places

Review: If you say nothing else about this film you will agree that its unique.  The cast here is mostly stellar with Bill Murray, Mickey Rourke and Rys Ifans.  The only downside is Megan Fox.  She's just a horror to watch on the screen.  She has no acting ability whatsoever and it really taints this movie.  Had they cast her role a bit better I think Passion Play would be my favorite of this year so far.  In spite of her this is a great script and a fun mix of fantasy, drama and romance.

The Big Bang Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Late one night, Los Angeles private investigator, Ned Cruz (Antonio Banderas) gets a visit from a recently paroled Russian boxer with an intriguing job offer: find Lexie, his missing girlfriend and the 30-million dollar stash of diamonds she's hiding. As Detective Cruz sets out to find her, the clues send him into the city's seediest corners, from a Hollywood action star with a dirty little secret (James Van Der Beek), to an enterprising porn producer who takes a personal interest in his own work (Snoop Dogg), and a kinky waitress with an unusual fetish for particle physics (Autumn Reeser). Lexie proves to be as elusive as she is beautiful and Cruz becomes obsessed with finding her. With time running out, Cruz discovers the trail leads to reclusive billionaire (Sam Elliot), and his physicist (Jimmi Simpson), intent on recreating The Big Bang underneath the New Mexico desert. Tailed by a trio of cops also looking to find the missing diamonds, and with the body count piling up, Cruz soon realizes that what appeared to be a standard missing person's case is anything but, and could quite possibly bring about the end of the world as we know it.

Directed by Tony Krantz (producer of Mulholland Dr., and Fox's ''24''), written by Emmy® award winner Erik Jendresen (''Band of Brothers'') and featuring the debut soundtrack by The Smiths' legend Johnny Marr, THE BIG BANG is a neo-noir detective thriller for the 21st century. The film also stars Thomas Kretschmann (King Kong, Valkyrie), William Fichtner (Drive Angry, Date Night, ''Prison Break''), Robert Maillet (Sherlock Holmes, 300) with Delroy Lindo (Gone in 60 Seconds, ''The Chicago Code'').

Review: This film is billed as a thriller, but its much more than that.  I went in expecting a boring film, to be honest, but Banderes didn't disappoint.  I got a dark comedy with thrills, action and some suspense.  The script has a few slow points, but it ends up being worth the journey.  The acting is great and the editing is done slickly to make the film more entertaining.  Overall, its a great watch.

Transformers: The Complete Series DVD Review

Synopsis: All Four Seasons In One Box Set: ’Til All Are One!  Four million years after crash-landing on an unfamiliar planet, sentient robots with the ability to disguise themselves as common vehicles awaken on present-day Earth. Engaged in a crucial race to find a new energy source for their home planet of Cybertron, Optimus Prime and the heroic Autobots must defend the innocent people of Earth against their archnemeses: Megatron and the power-hungry Decepticons!

Review: The Transformers was one of the seminole cartoons of the 1980s.  Its been kept alive through spin-off cartoons like Beast Wars (which we're reviewing here shortly) and Armada, amongst others, and a set of live-action films.  This great new set from Shout! Factory includes the entire Generation One animated series from the 1980s!  We're talking 15 discs with 98 episodes in all.

This is one of the few shows, along with GI Joe, that really holds-up well still and is actively watchable, not just collectible.  The video transfer is absolutely amazing and there are tons of special features (see below).  This basically collects all of the volumes already released by Shout with a nice case.  This release features slim case DVDs, so it does have packaging differences.  You can purchase the case seperately on Shout Factory's website, as well.

The special features on this deluxe boxed set include: Retrospective featurettes, From the files of Teletraan-2, PSAs, Toy commercials and Art galleries.

This is a phenominal release at a great price.  We cannot recommend it enough!

A saga which only ends in the last few seconds of the spectacular Samba School parade in Rio de Janeiro

Review: This DVD represents another show from Latin American HBO.  This one is dark and dramatic as we see three men try to make their place in the underworld.  This crime drama is a phenomenal show.  It does come with English subtitles, so we can follow whats going on!  I found this one to be a great crime drama, focused on three sons trying to fill the shoes left by a favorite son, after he commits suicide.  All trying to please their father, to no end.  A great show.

Capadocia: Season 1 DVD Review

Synopsis: To restore order in the prisons of Mexico City it will become necessary to undertake urgent reform. Such reform will come at a great cost to those unfortunate prisoners forced to serve as test subjects in a new prison privately referred to as the place without forgiveness. Devised by a group of greedy businessmen who bribe the government with the promise of cheap forced labor, this experimental prison soon attracts unwanted attention, particularly from social activists. One activist in particular, Teresa Lagos, struggles to outsmart Federico Marquez, a lawyer hired to ensure the commercial viability of the new prison. In order to defeat his opposition, she incites a riot in one of the older jails. This forces the Mayor of Mexico City, Santiago Marin ,Teresa s former husband, to immediately open the doors of Capadocia. And thus begins a journey into a hell that knows no bounds, and has no exits.

Review: Capadocia is a fantastic show from Latin America that made its way onto HBO on demand and has gained a small following here in the USA.  I, for one, am always looking for some original or unique programming and you can often find that in overseas television.  Capadocia is one such show.  The premise is intense and the show is dark and intense.  It has everything you want in a drama. This one doesn't come dubbed in English, but does have subtitles available.  Its really a great show, we highly recommend.

Vanishing on 7th Street Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: VANISHING ON 7TH STREET taps into one of humankind's most primal anxieties: fear of the dark. An unexplained blackout plunges the city of Detroit into total darkness, and by the time the sun rises, only a few people remain surrounded by heaps of empty clothing, abandoned cars and lengthening shadows. A small handful of strangers that have survived the night (Hayden Christensen, Thandie Newton, John Leguizamo and Jacob Latimore) each find their way to a rundown bar. With daylight beginning to disappear completely and whispering shadows surrounding the survivors, they soon discover that the enemy is the darkness itself.

Review: The Vanishing on 7th Street begins with a lot of promise.  After all, this film has a ton going for it..a great cast and a cool plot.  All of a sudden almost everyone disappears and we get the typical city shots of abandoned cars desolation.  A few people are "left behind" and struggle to figure out what happened.  In the meantime, these shadows are chasing them and unless they stay under bright light they will die.  This film is full of suspense and you hang on really wanting for the explanation in the end..but it doesn't come.  This one is left as a mystery and is as frustrating as a David Lynch film.  Its a fun watch, but no payoff!

What begins as camaraderie soon turns creepy, and Sara comes face-to-face with the terrifying realization that her new best friend is obsessive, unbalanced...and maybe even a killer!

Review: The Roommate is one of those thrillers that has the new girl move-in and become obsessed with her new roommate.  She at first seems like a great girl..a new best friend, but eventually becomes obsessed and even violent.  The film doesn't have a lot of surprises, but it has some decent acting...especially a cool cameo from Billy Zane.   This one delivers on thrills.

Review: Deadly Shooter is a modern day rendition of the classic western film.  Not since Tombstone have we seen a great and serious western worth speaking of...until now.  This one stars country music singer Randy Travis, who is surprisingly good, and martial arts legend Michael Dudikoff!  While Dudikoff isn't the best actor out there, he really pulls it off for this film.  It has drama and action and everything we want for a classic tale of good vs. evil in the wild west!

Cutter is also trying to bring in gambler Paul Regret (Whitman), who's wanted for murder. Both missions get entangled when Cutter crosses paths with Regret unexpectedly, and the men form an unlikely friendship while Regret decides which side of the law he's really on. Co-starring Ina Balin, Nehemiah Persoff and Lee Marvin, The Comancheros is a rousing western, and the last film of director Michael Curtiz.

Review: The Comancheros is a vintage western film starring the Duke, John Wayne.  This was one of his later westerns and it was rather underappreciated in its time, but has really stood the test of time.  This is the first time its been transfered onto blu-ray high-definition.  The film looks great, very clear and crisp.  As far as classic westerns go, this is definately a must-have.

Review: The Hustler is a vintage classic film starring Paul Newman about a pool shark.  The film is an absolute gem in film history and is now on blu-ray for the first time.  It has an attached book that has some trivia and info about the film.  The transfer into blu-ray high definition is fantastic.  It really provides some great clarity in the picture over the DVD.

Review: Daydream Nation is one of those rare dramas that really gets under your skin.  Thats not a negative comment by any means.  Kat Dennings, a super hot young actress (40 Year Old Virgin), moves to a new town and seduces both a teacher and a local stoner.  As her situation unfolds, this film's dark and ominous tone really rings of Donnie Darko.  This one is definately unique and worth a watch.

Review: Lemonade Mouth is a new musical film from the Disney Channel.  The premise of this film is basically the Breakfast Club meets Glee.  This group of kids from various walks of life get together and form a band..Lemonade Mouth. The songs are great and well put together, although its weird how they all know the songs instantly while writing together, but hey we can suspend reality for a fun film, right?  My tweens loved this one and my wife enjoyed the music.  This one is good for the whole family.

The Misfits 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Expertly directed by John Huston (The Maltese Falcon) from a screenplay by Pulitzer Prize winner Arthur Miller, The Misfits is “a probing, exciting drama” (The Film Daily) of honesty, intensity and sheer poetic brilliance. Divorced and disillusioned, Roslyn Tabor (Marilyn Monroe) befriends a group of misfits, including an aging cowboy (Clark Gable), a heartbroken mechanic (Eli Wallach) and a worn-out rodeo rider (Montgomery Clift). Through their live-for-the-moment lifestyle, Roslyn experiences her first taste of freedom, exhilaration and passion. But when her innocent idealism clashes with their hard-edged practicality, Roslyn must risk losing their friendship... and the only true love she's ever known.

Review: This is the second Marilyn Monroe film to be released on blu-ray this month!  The Misfits is an epic film that represents the final on-screen appearances from both Clark Cable AND Monroe!  This film takes place mostly on a ranch, where down and out divorcee Monroe meets ex-cowboy Gable.  The chemistry between the two was fantastic and the performances were beyond amazing.  If you haven't seen this classic film, you need to!  The blu-ray looks fantastic.  This film is primarily daytime outdoors shots and these look great with little to no grain.  The colors pop as much as you can expect and the sound is wonderful.  This blu-ray release celebrates the 50th anniversary of the film.

The Mechanic DVD Review

Synopsis: FOLLOWS AN ELITE HIT MAN AS HE TEACHES HIS TRADE TO AN APPRENTICE WHO HAS A CONNECTION TO ONE OF HIS PREVIOUS VICTIMS.

Review: The Mechanic is a remake of an old 1970s film of the same name.  There is little resemblance to the vintage flick, so if you're a purist this film will disappoint you.  On the other hand, if you're just looking for a good action thriller and or you're a fan of Statham's previous work, the Mechanic will be right up your alley!

This film is full of assasins, action, thrills and of course fights!  Jason Statham is right on-cue with his type-casted role of action lead.  His demeanor is stern, as always.  He's very enjoyable to watch, even in the same role over and over.  We can't get enough Stath.  If you can't get enough Stath, then I can recommend this one to you.

Hotel Rwanda Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Don Cheadle gives an Oscar® Nominated performance in this “profoundly affecting” (Houston Chronicle) true story of one man’s brave stance against savagery during the 1994 Rwandan conflict. Nominated for an additional two Oscars® for Best Supporting Actress (Sophie Okonedo) and Best Original Screenplay, Hotel Rwanda is “the kind of film that can change the world” (Joel Siegel, Good Morning America).

As his country descends into madness, hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina (Cheadle) sets out to save his family. But when he sees that the world will not intervene in the massacre of minority Tutsis, he finds the courage to open his hotel to over 1,200 refugees – with only his wits and words to help keep them alive another hour... another day.

Review: Hotel Rwanda was a groundbreaking drama back in 2004.  It was also a breakout role for the great Don Cheadle.  Cheadle plays Rwandan hotel manager Paul Rusesabagina who ends up saving 1,200 people from genocide!  This film is intense and full of some of the best dramatic acting that we've seen before or since!  The film is making it onto blu-ray, thank goodness.  Its long overdue for a transfer into high-definition. The film looks fantastic with no grain interference.  The colors and skin tones really pop.  This is a great release and a must-own film.

Complete with hilarious never-before-seen bonus features, Gnomeo & Juliet is an out-of-the-ordinary animated comedy your entire family will love. We just gnome it!

Review: The concept behind Gnomeo and Juliet is a loose re-telling of the Shakespeare classic with different colored families of lawn gnomes.  Obviously parents need not worry...this one won't end quite so morbidly!  The film is full of great, contemporary music, even from the likes of Lady Gaga.  The characters are great and the story is lovely.  There are definately lessons to be learned and tons of comedic moments to enjoy, in classic Disney fashion.

Some Like It Hot 50th Anniversary Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: When Chicago musicians Joe (Tony Curtis) and Jerry (Jack Lemmon) accidentally witness a gangland shooting, they quickly board a south bound train to Florida, disguised as Josephine and Daphne, the two newest and homeliest members of an all-girl jazz band. Their cover is perfect... until a love lorn singer (Marilyn Monroe) falls for Josephine, an ancient playboy (Joe E. Brown) falls for Daphne, and a mob boss (George Raft) refuses to fall for their hoax! Nominated* for 6 Academy Awards®, Some Like It Hot is “the quintessential madcap farce and one of the greatest of all film comedies” (The Motion Picture Guide).

Review: This classic comedy film starred Jack Lemmon and Tony Curtis as two low-rent musicians that accidentally witness a mob murder.  They go on the run in drag with a female band and meet up with Sugar (Marilyn Monroe).   The guys need to be extra careful not to be found out, because by coincidence a mobster convention is going on in Florida in the very hotel they end up staying at!  Tony Curtis ends up falling for Marilyn and begins to woo her dressed as a rich man by night.  This movie is absolutely hilarious and a wonderful example of the comedy skills for all three actors.  This is the first time that this film was available on blu-ray.  The high-definition transfer really came across nicely.  This is a fantastic release for any lover of vintage comedy and or the late great Marilyn Monroe.

Challenge of the GoBots DVD Review
You can own this DVD today from the WBShop: http://bit.ly/WAC_GoBots1

Synopsis: CHALLENGE OF THE GOBOTS: THE ORIGINAL MINI-SERIES (1984) From Gobotron to your home, it's the original 5 episode mini-series that brought the GoBots to life. When Cy-kill embarks on his mad quest to conquer the galaxy starting with Earth, only Leader-1 and his band of Guardians stands in his way. The mini-series that launched a legend! Newly remastered from original film elements, Challenge of the GoBots has NEVER looked this good. See example below.

Review: The Gobots were brought over to the United States back in 1983.  It was a toyline produced by the Tonka company one year prior to the arrival of Transformers.  Still, this show is considered a lesser quality version of the robot wars!  In fact, they were even referenced in the cult classic "Clerks 2" by Jason Lee "Gobots are like the K-Mart of the Transformers".  This DVD release from the Warner Archive features the initial mini-series that made it all come to life!

This DVD contains five episodes that made-up the initial broadcast of the Gobots.  The video has been remastered (see above) and looks absolutely amazing.  I can't believe how clear the image is.  The lines are a bit cheesy, but I'm still a fanboy and I love it.  This one sits proudly in our vintage animation collection.  Now, bring us the complete series release WB!

The Green Hornet 3-disc Blu-Ray 3D, Blu-Ray + DVD Combo Review!

Synopsis: Britt Reid (Rogen) is the son of LA's most prominent and respected media magnate and perfectly happy to maintain a directionless existence on the party scene – until his father (Wilkinson) mysteriously dies, leaving Britt his vast media empire. Striking an unlikely friendship with one of his father's more industrious and inventive employees, Kato (Chou), they see their chance to do something meaningful for the first time in their lives: fight crime. But in order to do this, they decide to become criminals themselves – protecting the law by breaking it, Britt becomes the vigilante The Green Hornet as he and Kato hit the streets.

Using all his ingenuity and skill, Kato builds the ultimate in advanced retro weaponry, The Black Beauty, an indestructible car equal parts firepower and horsepower. Rolling in a mobile fortress on wheels and striking the bad guys with Kato's clever gadgets, The Green Hornet and Kato quickly start making a name for themselves, and with the help of Britt's new secretary, Lenore Case (Diaz), they begin hunting down the man who controls LA's gritty underworld: Benjamin Chudnofsky (Waltz). But Chudnofsky has plans of his own: to swat down The Green Hornet once and for all.

Review: The re-launch of the Green Hornet franchise isn't one that I saw coming...and I definately didn't think that Seth Rogan would helm the character.  I remember watching the 60s version with Bruce Lee when the guest starred on the old 1966 Batman television show.  That was my first introduction to the characters.  Then, when Kevin Smith wrote his comic book take in recent years, I really enjoyed that.   I'm no Hornet purist, but I'm definately familiar with the story and characters.  I expected this film to have plenty of action...I didn't expect it to be as overtly violent as it ended up being.  It was a welcome surprise, though.  Fair warning to parents...I would shy away from letting young kids view this one.    The acting is great, the script is solid and Rogan is his usual hilarious self.  Even when he isn't trying to be funny, he makes me laugh.

The 3D version of the film looks amazing.  There is zero ghosting and it really pops!  The blu-ray and DVD are also nice to have..this is a fantastic set.  The special features on this set include: PS3 Theme, movieIQ, Jay Chou Audition, Double Barrel, 3D Animated Storyboard Comparisons, The Green Hornet Cutting Room, Filmmakers' Commentary, "Awesoom"-Gag Reel, "Trust Me" -Director Michel Gondry, Writing The Green Hornet, The Black Beauty: Rebirth of Cool, The Stunt Family Armstrong, Finding Kato and The Art of Destruction.
