Chuck Norris: Karate Kommandos DVD Review

Synopsis: Martial arts master Chuck Norris brings his thrilling mix of heroism and incredible athletic prowess to this animated action series, blending the courage and ingenuity of the American frontiersman with the willpower and stoicism of the samurai warrior. Through five exciting installments, Norris and his Karate Kommandos warrior crew battle the sinister organization VULTURE, a sophisticated terrorist cabal led by The Klaw and his lieutenant Super Ninja. Norris created the series and kicks off each adventure.

Review: The 1980s were a heyday for great cartoons and for martial arts...this great niche cartoon blends the two masterfully.  Chuck Norris is now a cultural icon, but back in the 80s he was just a cool action star.  This show, produced by Ruby-Spears, was full of classic hand-drawn
animation..something you just don't see so much nowadays.  Unfortunately, the series only had a life of five episodes in it.

The show was bumpered by live action sequences of Chuck Norris, the man himself, doing martial arts and giving moral tips on life..much like the longer-lived Mr. T cartoon of the era.  The show overall was ok..its more fun than anything else.  It didn't show in all markets at the time, only in certain regions, but has aired on Cartoon Network's adult swim since.  The picture quality on this DVD is fantastic.  The show looks great and its a lot of retro fun.  This DVD is produced by the Warner Archive DVD on demand online only service, so go to their site to get this rarity..you won't find it in stores and likely not used!

Did you know that a series of action figures were produced for the cartoon, in anticipation of it being a bit more popular than it was?  Here is an example of one of the toys from the Kenner toyline:
