Mortal Kombat Synopsis: Lord Rayden (Christopher Lambert) has rescued them, but he cannot fight for them. They – a martial artist, an action film star, a soldier – are the chosen three. And while the world’s fate rests on their shoulders, the rest of us can enjoy the thrills as they compete to save us all in the body-slamming, mystical-tinged, full-tilt spectacle of creatures and conflict that is Mortal Kombat. Paul Anderson (Resident Evil: Afterlife) directs this astonishing and trend-setting experience that showed how to turn a smash-hit video game into a movie smash. Cheer these intrepid three Kombatants – they’re fighting for you!

Mortal Kombat Annihilation Synopsis: A new era…but for whom? The Mortal Kombat victory in the Outworld was supposed to give rise to a generation of peace on Earth. But never trust the word of the fiendish and the power mad. They’ve opened the portals linking their dimension to ours, and Earth will be overwhelmed – if a gutsy band of human heroes doesn’t acquire new kombat skills that will crush Outworld’s imaginative array of bad-ass warrior creatures. John R. Leonetti, cinematographer of Mortal Kombat and 2010’s Piranha, directs the fighting fury of Mortal Kombat Annihilation. Smash evil!

Review: The original Mortal Kombat film was highly anticipated by the millions of fans of the game.  I remember sitting in the theater at 15 years of age and when that New Line Cinema logo came up on the screen and the Mortal Kombat theme started blaring I was so excited.  The film had its flaws, but overall it was a lot of fun.  The blu-ray release of this film is interesting.  The colors don't pop all that much and there isn't a lot of evidence of the high-definition..not as much as I would've liked.  There is little to no grain, which is great, but its fairly close to the DVD release.  The film doesn't hold up quite as well as I would've liked..but its far better than the ill-fated sequel...

Mortal Kombat Annihilation is maybe worse than the first for a few key reasons. Firstly, the film opens up exactly where the first left-off, which I love, but it has a mostly new (and lesser known) cast who has somehow miraculously switched costumes since the end of the first film! Most annoyingly the recasting of Rayden from Christopher Lambert in the first film to James Remar, now of "Dexter" fame.

Then, the acting from Shao Khan is so feeble and campy that its hard to handle. There are several continuity issues, such as Johnny Cage having his sunglasses back again that were broken by Goro in the first film. I do enjoy the almost immediate death of Johnny Cage, since he was one of my least favorite characters anyways, but the acting in these film is so horrendous that it can be hard to watch. I think this is only because I really took Mortal Kombat seriously as a kid...clearly the filmmakers did not.

Overall, these were fun movies and are best added to your library for nostalgia and a few good laughs, as they suffer the fate of most martial arts films from the last century...camp.
