Vikings: Season One Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Journey to a thrilling ancient world in this epic new series about history's bravest and most brutally fearsome warriors...VIKINGS. Ragnar, a would-be Viking chieftain, longs to fulfill his destiny as an explorer and conqueror, alongside his ambitious brother Rollo and loyal wife Lagertha. But as Ragnar leads daring raids in distant realms across the ocean, treacherous forces in his Norse homeland conspire against him. Faced with shocking betrayals and the temptations of a mysterious seductress, Ragnar must wage war on the battlefield -- and within himself -- to protect his freedom, family and life. Includes 9 episodes with extended and alternate scenes.

Review: The History Channel is famous for many things, including great historical documentaries and specials and more reality based shows like Pawn Stars.  Now, they've decided to join the dramatic cable TV craze and delved into their first scripted series, Vikings.   This nine episode first season is full of action, drama and phenominal production values.  The show is dark and complex with well developed characters and a story that far outweighs other historical dramas.  Obviously it isn't completely factual by any stretch, but I never thought I'd be into a series about Vikings...but I'm sold.  This is a must have.  It would also make a great Xmas gift.

Review: Bones has been following the same basic crime of the week premise since its inception, with some ongoing backstory.  This blu-ray collects all 26 episodes of season eight.  I can't believe the show is still going strong!  Its long in syndication and has a huge cult following.   The show offers well established characters and tons of episodes, thanks to it being a network show, so its easy to get into.  This season has great dark humor, the chemistry between Booth and Bones is still there and the show has no signs of slowing.  This one is a must have for any fan.

Shrek: the Musical Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: The greatest fairy tale never told comes to life as never before in SHREK THE MUSICAL, the highly acclaimed Broadway production based on the smash-hit movie. Called a "triumph of comic imagination" (Elysa Gardner, USA Today) that "never stints on spectacle or laughs" (David Rooney, Variety), SHREK THE MUSICALr received eight 2009 Tony Awardr nominations including Best Musical. Featuring a fantastic score of 17 all-new songs, along with unforgettable characters and outrageous humor, it's ogre-sized fun for the whole family!

Review: We actually took our kids to the traveling Shrek: The Musical show when it came to town last year.  I expected the show to be really lame, to be honest, but to my delight it was well-produced, entertaining and quite fantastic.  This blu-ray is a wonderful reminder of that experience.  If you saw the show live, this is a great way to relive it and if you didn't get the opportunity to see it, this way you won't miss out!  We highly recommend this one.

The Exorcist: 40th Anniversary Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: An innocent girl is evilly possessed -- and a doubting priest becomes her last hope. Linda Blair and Ellen Burstyn in the two-time Academy Award(R) winner that shocked the world.

Review: Of all the films that terrified me growing up it was the Exorcist and the Night of the Living Dead.  I grew up in a typical midwestern religious household, so hoaky concepts like demonic posession were terrifying to me and the depiction in this film is so well done that it felt real.  This is still to this day one of the most widely regarded scary movies, because to so many religious people, it seems feasable.   This special edition marks 40 years of this classic and it looks amazing on blu-ray!  This great new edition includes all this below:

"Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist" 40 years after his novel was published,The Exorcist author, screenwriter and producer returns to where it all began. First stop is a guest house in the hills of Encino, California, where he wrote the novel. The author visits the place for the first time in 40 years and shares not only memories of writing the book, but also discusses how it inspired him. We then meet Blatty in two key and iconic locations; Georgetown University where the film was shot, and at the now-famous Exorcist steps. Throughout, Blatty reads from his novel, including an excerpt from a chilling newly published passage.

"Talk of the Devil" - While at Georgetown University, William Peter Blatty heard about a true case of possession from Father Eugene Gallagher. At the time the film came out, the priest talked at length about exorcism, the true story and about Blatty; this footage is now available for the first time in many years. It is as revealing as it is shocking.

Also included from the previous release:
· Two Commentaries and an introduction by William Friedkin
· A Commentary by William Peter Blatty
· 1998 BBC Documentary "The Fear of God: 25 Years of the Exorcist"

Robot Chicken: Season Six DVD Review

Synopsis: Robot Chicken is back for its Sixth Season of hilariously insane, wackadoodle, totally off the wall stop-motion animation! This season's 20 brand spankin' new episodes will flash images across your retinas and flood your brains with an overabundance of mind-melting pop culture spoofery that will most likely cause your head to explode and leave a stain on the couch that will never come out (sorry Mom)!

Review: Where has Robot Chicken been all my life?!  I just recently discovered this show, thanks to their DC Comics special, and I'm completely taken.  This show is a nerdgasm time and time again.  The stop motion hilarity continues on this sixth season DVD!  There is also over two hours of bonus features, which are fantastic.  I cannot recommend this show enough.  Its particularly funny if you grew up in the 80s and 90s, or have at least since seen a lot of the cartoons of the era.  This is a must-have!

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: It is ten years after an aging Batman has retired, and Gotham City has sunk deeper into decadence and lawlessness. Now, when his city needs him most, the Dark Knight returns in a blaze of glory. Joined by Carrie Kelly, a teenage female Robin, Batman takes to the streets to end the threat of the mutant gangs that have overrun the city. And after facing off against his two greatest enemies, the Joker and Two-Face, for the final time, Batman finds himself in mortal combat with his former ally, Superman, in a battle that only one of them will survive.

Review: The Dark Knight Returns paints a phenominal picture of a tortured and hollow Bruce Wayne, trying desperately to keep the promise that had set the Batman into retirement for the past decade.  Now, with the mutant gang escalating their violence and Harvey Dent on the lamb, Bruce is pushed over the edge mentally and emotionally...and he must bring back the Bat.

Its truly a thing of beauty to watch as the animators bring the Bat back into this grim and dark Gotham.  He attacks from the shadows, sharp and brutal..just the way all good fanboys wish for.  The theme music is very Nolanesque and the action is intense.  They do a wonderful job of bringing this very 80s themed tale into the modern age.  Peter Weller's portrayl of the Bat is gritty, dark and grim.  Exactly what you'd imagine when reading the comics.

Its funny...as a kid and an adult fan I've read through the graphic novel dozens of times..it changed the way I viewed comic books.  And I figured watching this would be a little dull, since I am so familiar with the story....but they did such an amazing job of bringing this epic tale to life that I was riveted to the screen.  This is one of the best animated adaptations of Batman to date.  This new release combines parts one and two into one long animated feature with some great special features and pack-in art cards.  This is the ultimate collector's edition.

Target has their own exclusive steelbook version of the feature.  You can see the cards included with all versions in the pic below with the Steelbook!
This seamless combination of the heralded two-part "Batman: The Dark Knight Returns" is accompanied on the Blu-ray Combo Pack by several new bonus features, including a 70-minute Frank Miller retrospective, an all-new filmmaker commentary, four exclusive collector cards with never-before-seen artwork, and all of the extra content originally found on the original Part 1 & 2 releases.

With punk hacker Seymour hardwired to the cause, Alex in the fold, and Owen back from a Russian prison, the new team has all the tech, muscle and spy power they need to round up the Dirty Thirty, rogue assassins who remain at large around the globe. Nikita must use every asset in her power to hold it together for the mission, her man, her future and her freedom in all 22 butt-kicking episodes of this smart, sexy suspense series.

Review: I was a huge fan of the original Nikita television show, so I figured I'd give this one a chance.  I wasn't much on CW shows, but this one is very high quality, both in acting and writing.  This season things have really gotten involved, withi things being taken all the way up to the President.  The action is spot on, the girls are good lookin', this is a great show!  Definately one that you should add to your collection.  I would pick up the first two seasons, but its not essential to jump into the show.

Curse of Chucky (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet) Review

Synopsis: He's back! From the filmmakers that brought you Chucky comes the terrifying return of the pint-sized doll possessed by the spirit of a notorious serial killer. When a mysterious package arrives at the house of Nica (Fiona Dourif, True Blood), she doesn't give it much thought. However, after her mother's mysterious death, Nica begins to suspect that the talking, red-haired doll her visiting niece has been playing with may be the key to the ensuing bloodshed and chaos. The return of America's favorite toy, voiced again by Brad Dourif, is unrated and full of more blood-splattered thrills and chills.

Review: When I was growing up it was the heyday of slasher cinema.  Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Halloween..and TONS of off-shoots.  None freaked me out quite so much as Chucky.  He was like a twisted 'My Buddy' doll and I was pretty sure my toys would come to life and kill me in my sleep anyway, so Chucky really hit a nerve! lol.  Well, we're all grown up now and still demanding film from our favorite characters.  This new Chuck feature is better than ever with the original voice and far better graphic sequences...this little serial killer is at it again and better than ever in his sixth feature!  Perfect for the Halloween season!

Check out this cool Chucky Megamix!

Drug War Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Manufacturing just 50 grams of meth in China will earn you a death sentence. Timmy Choi (Louis Koo) just got caught making tons. Now he's in the custody of Captain Zhang (Sun Honglei), and has one chance to avoid execution - turn informant and help the cops bring down the powerful cartel he's been cooking for. Over the next 72 sleepless hours, the sting spins out of control, the line between duty and recklessness is blurred, and it becomes unclear who actually has the upper hand. From Johnnie To, master of the Hong Kong crime thriller, comes an unnerving thrill ride through the modern criminal underworld.

Review: There are a few countries that really do action right and China is one of them.  Drug War is a frenzy of action, drama and crime.  There are times when the film resembles Pulp Fiction in it's dark portrayl of the drug world and times when its supercop.  The tone is very dark and the action is spot on.  This is one of the rare films that I give high marks to without any notable actors on staff.  This one is perfect for any fan of the action/crime genre!

American Horror Story: Asylum Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Step inside a madhouse of horror and experience the chilling new incarnation of TV's most daringly provocative series. The sins of the past haunt the present at the notorious Briarcliff home for the criminally insane, ruled with an iron fist by Sister Jude. Forbidden desire and terrifying evil lurk around every corner...from alien abduction to demonic possession to a skin-wearing psychopath known as Bloody Face. Emmyr winner JESSICA LANGE leads an exceptional ensemble cast, including ZACHARY QUINTO, JAMES CROMWELL and SARAH PAULSON. 'It's genuinely, unrelentingly horrific and creepy' (Time Magazine) and a 'totally addictive' (The Washington Post) show.

Review: One thing that I'll give American Horror Story is that you'd never know it was produced by the same people that bring us Glee, its legitmately shocking.  The second season of the show, dubbed Asylum, features most of the same cast in new roles, telling a new story that is just as wicked and twisted as the first.  This is without a doubt the most edgy show on television today.    This one pushes the envelope even more with a dark asylum, twisted nuns, nazis and psychopaths.  This one is certainly disturbing and NOT for children!  But definately for the adult looking for something dark this Halloween season.

Leverage: The 5th Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Leverage focuses on a team led by former insurance investigator turned thief, Nate Ford (Hutton). Together, they try to level the playing field for people whose lives have been destroyed by the rich and powerful. In the final season of Leverage, the team will be forced to face changing personal dynamics as the relationship between Parker (Riesgraf) and Hardison (Hodge) heats up, and Nate continues to struggle with inner demons. Among their upcoming jobs, they will target a conniving shipping executive (guest star Cary Elwes); weathly scientist; an ex-hockey-player-turned-team-owner (guest star Treat Williams); a corrupt restaurateur; and a corrupt businessman (guest star Matthew Lillard). In addition, the team will once again face their nemesis, insurance-investigator-turned Interpol-agent Jim Sterling (guest star Mark Sheppard).

Review: Leverage was a wonderful show that aired on TNT.  This DVD set represents the fifth and final season of the show, all 15 episodes.  This show has some of the best developed characters with fantastic chemistry.  It just flows so well.  The episodes managed to be full of action, intrigue and fun without ever delving into the vulgar or hypersexualized themes that so many other shows do.  The only thing that this show suffered from was poor scheduling by the network.  The airings became irregular at best and seasons were poorly promoted by TNT.  We're lucky to have gotten five seasons considering.  This show is like an ongoing Oceans 11 meets Sneakers.  Its phenominal in every way.  This DVD and the previous seasons are a must-have!
