Synopsis: Voted Canada's Best Female Comedian at the Canadian Comedy Awards and a finalist on NBC's "Last Comic Standing," Debra DiGiovanni is one of comedy's fastest rising stars. In her debut DVD, Debra presents her personable, relatable and just plain hilarious views on dating, dieting and love as only she can share.

Review: I had never heard of comedian Debra DiGiovanni until we popped in her new DVD.  Apparently, she was one of the contestants on Last Comic Standing.  We love stand-up here a the Legion, but we've become quite picky about what we'll watch.  We've just seen too much crap.  DiGiovanni is fresh, funny and oh so bad.  Her act is a joy to watch and we laughed our asses off!  Cannot recommend her enough.

The Ides Of March Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Ambition seduces and power corrupts in a nerve-wracking thriller from Academy Award® nominated director George Clooney (Good Night, and Good Luck). Idealistic campaign worker Stephen Meyers (Ryan Gosling) has sworn to give all for Governor Mike Morris (Clooney), a wild card presidential candidate whose groundbreaking ideas could change the political landscape. However, a brutal Ohio primary threatens to test Morris's integrity. Stephen gets trapped in the down-and-dirty battle and finds himself caught up in a scandal where the only path to survival is to play both sides. The all-star cast includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei and Evan Rachel Wood.

Review: For our money there is no better actor in our times than George Clooney.   He has that old Hollywood feel about him that oozes likability and integrity.  He is joined in this politicial drama by an outstanding supporting cast that includes Philip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei and Paul Giamatti.  Gosling is alright, but I'm not really a fan.  This one is well-written, smooth and an easy watch.  Its a complete win and I recommend it to all audiences!

The special features on this blu-ray include: Commentary with George Clooney and Grant Heslov, Developing the Campaign: The Origin of The Ides of March, Believe: George Clooney, On The Campaign: The Cast of The Ides Of March and What Does a Political Consultant Do?

Cold Sweat DVD Review

Synopsis: When Roman's girlfriend disappears, he expects to find her in the arms of another man. Instead he finds her held captive by a pair of elderly and unstable political radicals armed with cases of decades-old and highly explosive dynamite. The villainous duo has been conducting illicit experiments on young girls lured to their home via the internet, and unless Roman can free his young love from their clutches, she's likely to end up in pieces due to a generous slathering of nitroglycerin. A delirious old school horror picture with the most memorable villains in years at its core, Adrian Garcia Bogliano's "Cold Sweat" is an unforgettable shocker loaded with wildly imaginative and stylish action.

Review: I'm not really into horror, but Cold Sweat took me my surprise.  It plays more like an intense thriller with some brutal action.  The film is very modern, in that the victims are lured via the internet.  The motivations of the villains isn't quite clear at all times, but their banter is darkly hilarious.  This one is definately worth the watch.

Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star DVD Review

Synopsis: Bucky [Nick Swarsdon] is a small town grocery bagger, going nowhere in life until he discovers that his conservative parents were once adult film stars! Armed with the belief that he has found his destiny, Bucky packs up and heads out to LA, hoping to follow in his parents footsteps. Also starring Christina Ricci, Don Johnson and Stephen Dorff.

Review: Bucky Larson is an interesting film, because its almost immediately a parody of itself.  I don't know if they made this as a cheeky joke or if they really are so out of touch that they think this kind of cliche storytelling is what the public puts up with anymore.  I tend to think its a bit of a satire, and in the case the movie is genius.  Nick Swardson is a funny guy and he does a nice job of building the ackward and bizarre looking character of Bucky Larson and there are some laughs to pull out of this one, but beware!

The special features on this DVD include: Laughter Is Contagious, Behind The Teeth, Gary: Tough Customer and Bucky Sparkles.

First Squad Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Set during the opening days of World War II on the Eastern Front. Its main cast is a group of Soviet teenagers with extraordinary abilities; the teenagers have been drafted to form a special unit to fight the invading German army. They are opposed by a Schutzstaffel (SS) officer who is attempting to raise from the dead a supernatural army of crusaders from the 12th-century Order of the Sacred Cross and enlist them in the Nazi cause.

Review: We've seen a lot of anime here at the Legion, but none quite so unique as First Squad!  This unusual anime is centered around a group of superpowered teens during WWII Russia.    The enemy?  The Nazi SS, who just so happen to be raising the dead.  Does it get cooler than this?  Hell no!  The animation is great and the story is phenominal. We cannot recommend this one enough for anime and non-anime fans alike!

Synopsis: Private Kang (Jang Dong-kun) monitors a stretch of the South Korean coast lined with barbed-wire fencing. Driven by the belief that killing a spy is the highest honor, Kang eagerly awaits a chance to prove his worth as a soldier. One night, he mistakes a promiscuous couple for North Korean spies and shoots without hesitation. Despite receiving honors, he slowly begins to unravel under the grief of his actions. As he loses his grip on reality, tensions and paranoia escalate and further tragedy becomes unavoidable. The Coast Guard won acclaimed director Kim Ki-Duk a FIPRESCI Prize for its strong and innovative depiction of the illusion of power which destroys humanity on both sides of the fence. Blu Ray + DVD combo pack

Review: The Coast Guard is a fantastic cautionary tale of the power of authority gone wrong.  The gung-ho war hero attitude can be quite dangerous in real life situations.  After a private shoots an innocent couple, he begins to fall apart, and rightfully so.  This film is emotional and sends a fantastic message, while taking the viewer on a great journey.  This one is an excellent watch.

The Age of Heroes Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Action-packed British thriller based on the real-life events of Ian Fleming's 30 Commando during World War II - the template for the modern day SAS. Sean Bean and Danny Dyer star in an adrenalin-fuelled action-adventure which takes our heroes from the edge of defeat on the beaches of Dunkirk to the mountains of Norway on a search-and-destroy mission behind enemy lines that, if successful, would change the course of the war.

Review: Sean Bean is a great actor.  We saw him featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy portraying a character that died off quickly.  Then, we see him in Game of Thrones kicking ass and again...dies off.  This time, we get him as a British spy in the Ian Fleming tradition.  This one is full of old school style action with flair!  We recommend this for anyone looking for a nice throwback to the spy films of the 1950s.

Tall Story DVD Review

Synopsis: Jane Fonda wants a man she can look up to: a basketball player. In her debut movie, Fonda plays a college coed with a clear-cut goal: convince all-American hoopster Anthony Perkins that a bachelor’s degree doesn’t mean unmarried! From the moment the future two-time Academy Award® winner* spins her bicycle across campus (and headlong into two professors) to the romantic fadeout, it’s clear she possesses that quality called starpower. Footlight legend and longtime Fonda family friend Joshua Logan directed this frisky farce. The polished supporting cast includes the always engaging Ray Walston, Anne Jackson and Pulitzer prize-winning playwright Marc Connelly (recreating his Tony®-nominated Broadway turn). Fonda has grown into an extraordinarily tall Hollywood legend. And it all started with her in Tall Story. * Best Actress for Klute (1971) and Coming Home (1978).

Review: Tall Story markes the feature film debut of the now legendary Jane Fonda.   She is famous for her liberated woman persona, but that has yet to form in this early work in which she co-stars with the eerie Anthony Perkins.   This film is essentially a sports drama.   The film centers around a player that is conned into trouble over some Russian gamblers.  In the backround, Fonda is busy husband hunting and scheming.  This movie is kinda crazy, but a lot of fun.

Synopsis: Its 1987 and danielle the high school dirty girl is running away. With her is chubby gay clarke a bag of flour called joan and a walkman full of glorious 80s tunes

Review: Dirty Girl is a risque new comedy/drama about a young girl and her journey to come of age.  When her mother marries a crazy mormon she escapes to California to meet her real father, along with her new guy friend, a gay outcast.  This film is an interesting blend of genres that moves from one type of film to another, in fact you get about three films in one by the end.  There are a few "dirty" situations, particularly in the beginning, but as the film goes on you get some comedy and them some family drama.  This is a charming film and is definately worth the watch.

Synopsis: "Redline" is about the biggest and most deadly racing tournament in the universe. Only held once every five years, everyone wants to stake their claim to fame, including JP, a reckless dare-devil driver oblivious to speed limits with his ultra-customized car - all the while, organized crime and militaristic governments want to leverage the race to their own ends. Amongst the other elite rival drivers in the tournament, JP falls for the alluring Sonoshee - but will she prove his undoing, or can a high speed romance survive a mass destruction race?

Review: We have seen a lot of anime here at the Legion...but none quite like Redline.  The show is featured around the deadliest and most dangerous race in the world.  This anime doesn't have the trappings of some similar features with the cheesy lines, the pervy situations and cooky characters.  This one really takes animated storytelling seriously with great action and a wonderful story.  We recommend this one to any serious anime fan.

Synopsis: In this hilarious series Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, co-creators of The Office and Extras, send their friend Karl Pilkington (The Ricky Gervais Show) around the world...against his will! Karl thinks he’s visiting the "Seven Wonders" but along the way the “Little Englander” must endure camel rides, jungle treks, tribal customs and local oddballs while dining on toads and testicles... and searching for a clean bathroom. How does a man who prefers vacationing via camper cope with being an idiot abroad?

Review: Everyone knows someone that is a complete idiot..but none are quite so funny as the dopey, but lovable pal of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant...Karl Pilkington!  Ricky and Stephen are, of course, the gents responsible for the Office TV show, amongst other things.  This time around, they are sending Karl to see the seven wonders of the world, so that he experience other cultures and perhaps broaden his little mind.  The great bit is that they get him in tons of situations that are culturally bizarre to him, so his extreme reactions are priceless.  He rides bulls, eats the tequila work and runs from bees in Mexico...he gets painted in colored powders in India..he has to stay the night in a cave and ride a camel through the desert for eight hours in Jordan. There are other highlights, like watching Karl mock the Peruvian tribeschildren for not being able to figure out his travel edition of Connect Four.  We cannot say enough good things about this show, its an absolute blast!

This DVD set includes the entire first season of the show, as a second season has already aired overseas and is underway here in America.  There are seven episodes, one for each wonder of the world, and one recap episode with Ricky, Stephen and Karl and a ton of unseen footage!  Ths one is an absolute must-have!

Frozen World: The Story of the Ice Age DVD Review

Synopsis: This special collection features four specials, each examining a different aspect of the Ice Age. It s a remarkable journey from the primitive man who inhabited the planet to a volcanic eruption and its devastating impact, to a fascinating look at a changing world and the cost of survival, to an exploration into the possibilities of another Ice Age.

We start with Clash of the Cavemen, which compares the Neanderthals with the Cro-Magnons and follows them through a bone-chilling Ice Age winter, ending with the extinction of one species. Next, Volcanic Winter goes back 75,000 years to trace the impact of a volcanic eruption how it may have pushed the planet into an ice age and how it could have brought humanity to the edge of extinction. Then, take a Journey to 10,000 BC for the real story of life on earth during that time to unravel the geologic mystery surrounding the first environmental crisis faced by man. And finally, Mega Freeze asks if an Ice Age could happen again and if, in fact, it may already be too late to prevent a global disaster.

Review: The History Channel makes the best documentaries out there.  This new DVD set features a collection of various documentaries on the ice age!

DISC 1: Clash of the Cavemen / Volcanic Winter
DISC 2: Journey to 10,000 BC / Mega Freeze

Our favorite of these specials was without a doubt the Clash of the Cavement, but all four are fantastic watches.  These are great for classrooms or homeschoolers too!

As the child emperor takes the throne and his mother, Empress Dowager Longyu (Joan Chen), clings to power, famine sweeps the land and warring factions clash in battle. Meanwhile, the "New Army" beings targeting rebels and the desperate leaders of the Qing Dynasty begin putting the country's future at risk through rampant trading with foreign countries. When Huang Xing (Jackie Chan) returns home from studying modern warfare in Japan, he finds his homeland consumed by strife. Realizing that the only hope for the future is for China to take up arms and topple the Qing Dynasty, Huang enters into an epic battle that threatens devastating consequences for the common people. Bing Bing Lee, Jaycee Chan, and Winston Chao co-star

Review: This movie represents the landmark 100th film for Jackie Chan.  The historical drama is a rare look into China's past.  Chan plays an unlikely role as a revolutionary that helps to create an environment of revolt.  The Qing Dynasty may fall, but the consequences for the citizens could be deadly.  This one is full of drama, political action and intrigue.  Its a fantastic example of Chinese cinema at its finest.

But when a clue leads Riley to a troubled army buddy (Sean Patrick Flanery of THE BOONDOCK SAINTS), he'll uncover a shocking military conspiracy that triggers a war between local gangs and an international team of mercenaries. And in a city set to explode, nothing is more dangerous than a man with nothing to lose. Kevin Phillips (NOTORIOUS), Costas Mandylor (SAW 3-D), Clifford ''Method Man'' Smith, Jolene Blalock (''Star Trek: Enterprise''), Jürgen Prochnow (''24''), MMA legend Bas Rutten and Oscar® nominee Tom Berenger (PLATOON) co-star in this action-packed thriller about cops and killers, loss and redemption, and SINNERS AND SAINTS.

Review: We hadn't heard of this one before it arrived at our doorstep, but Sinners and Saints is one of the coolest action movies we've seen in awhile.  The basic story here is about a cop hunting down a brutal killer that may be one of his childhood friends!  What is remarkable about this film is the absolute thrilling action and violence involved in the journey as more and more layers get piled on this low budget action flick.  This one is definately fun and we highly recommend checking it out.

Higher Ground Blu-Ray/DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: Vera Farmiga’s directorial debut, Higher Ground, depicts the landscape of a tight-knit spiritual community thrown off-kilter when one of their own begins to question her faith. Inspired by Carolyn S. Briggs’ memoir, “This Dark World” , the film tells the story of a thoughtful woman’s struggles with belief, love and trust. A woman who learns that no matter how many times she loses her footing, she has within herself all that’s necessary to get to a higher place.

Review: Higher Ground is like no faith-based film I've ever seen.   This film centers around a woman looking beyond the confines of her church to understand and seek answers about her religion.  The film doesn't act as either a satire or a puff piece, but rather a very realistic idea of a fundamentalist Christian that questions many aspects of what she is taught.  The film is thought provoking and interesting, even for an atheist, such as myself.  Having been born into a very fundamentalist Christian family, my journey took me away from the religion, so a lot of what the main character here questions I can completely relate with, as well as her struggle to connect the dots between Christianity and its followers.  We definately recommend this one.

The special features on this set include: Commentary with Vera Farmiga, Joshua Leonard and Renn Hawkey, The Substance of Things Hoped For: Making Higher Ground, Production Diary, Toe Sucking, Meeting of the Men and Grave.

Synopsis: Anna Faris and Chris Evans star in the outrageously funny comedy that asks: can 19 wrongs make Mr. Right? When Ally Darling (Faris) reads an article that leads her to believe she's going to be alone forever, she begins a wild search to find the best "ex" of her life. But Ally's quest to reconnect with her former lovers goes hilariously awry, from a puppeteer who's more wooden than his puppet to a gynecologist with a "spotty" memory. Through it all, Ally might just find the man of her dreams in the last place she ever expected.

Review: What's Your Number is a hilarious romantic-themed comedy.    The acting is right on with the great and underrated Anna Faris in the lead and support by Captain America star Chris Evans.  Evans isn't too great on the acting, but Faris makes up for it in spades.  This one delivers consistant laughs and cheese and would make a great film to enjoy curled up with your sweetie.  This is one that everyone can enjoy.

Review: This re-make of an older campier made for TV movie is a huge leap from the original.   The influence of Guillermo Del Toro is obvious in this thriller both in tone and tale.  The story of a displaced family moving into a cursed home is moody, dark and chilling.  Katie Holmes actually stands out with a fantastic performance, which isn't typical for her!  It was quite impressive.  The creeply impish creatures trapped in the fireplace are back to mischief and this one is sure to give chills!

Together they defend the globe against Cobra, a ruthless organization led by Serpentor and the recently rejuvenated Cobra Commander, who are both determined to conquer the world by any means necessary.

In 1989 a popular second G.I. JOE animated series was created and helped revive the franchise by introducing fans to new G.I. JOE and Cobra troops alike! Now you can experience the adventures of that second series from the beginning, including the fan-favorite miniseries that started it all: Operation Dragonfire!

Review: GI Joe was one of the coolest cartoons of the 1980s, and one of the only ones that has held up in quality.  The original Sunbow produced series aired from 1985-86 to great acclaim.  Later on, D.I.C. bid in at a lower cost for Hasbro to bring the Joes back for the 1990s!  This second series of GI Joe aired from 1989-92.

Its said that the animation quality isn't up to snuff with the Sunbow series, but honestly I don't find that bothersome.  The stories are a little more geared towards a 1990s crowd and the selling of toy product, but again that doesn't bother me...I LOVE this series.   This is the cartoon that got me excited about GI Joe again in the early 1990s.

The returning cast members from the 1986 series include Cobra Commander and the Baroness,  while other fan favorites like Destro were re-cast.   There were a number of changes to make the series stand out from the original, such as the gold color of Destro's mask, Cobra Commander's new silver uniform and the focus on more obscure characters.

This DVD set starts with the Operation Dragonfire miniseries that re-launched the show and includes the rest of season one!  This DVD set from Shout! Factory has fantastic video quality and is a must-have for any fan of GI Joe!
