Justice League: Doom Blu-Ray / DVD Review

Synopsis: The world's greatest superheroes face their ultimate challenge--the mind of the Batman--when the Darknight Detective's secret plans to take down his Justice League colleagues should they turn against mankind fall into the hands of immortal villain Vandal Savage and a cabal of their deadliest enemies.

Review: The film opens up with that familar growl..the voice of the definitve Batman, Kevin Conroy.  Its just fantastic to hear each and every time.  We are treated almost immediately to a fantastic action-packed battle between the main League members and the Royal Flush Gang.

Justice League: Doom goes onto be one of the best Dc Universe films to date!    We get a fantastic level of animation, high-quality voice acting, including a return to the Green Lantern character by Nathan Fillion and a return to the Flash from Michael Rosenbaum!  This one feels like a nice extention of the JLU series.  This one is highly enjoyable from start to finish and is sure to please any Dc Comics fan!

Nerdy Note: After watching the discussion between Superman and Batman near the end of the film, I'm convinced that we will be getting HUSH made into a film sooner than later.  An item he provides Superman certainly does open that possibility up a bit.

Synopsis: While attempting to save the life of a fatally stabbed young woman, ER nurse Kaitlyn is accidentally electrocuted by a backfiring defibrillator. Upon awakening, she begins to experience memories that are not hers, but rather those of the now deceased victim. With her sanity in question and nowhere to turn, Kaitlyn must weave through the womans past and piece together her memories before the killer strikes again.

Review: In the realm of psychological thrillers we're rarely surprised these days.   Insight takes this cliche'd genre and really freshens it up!  The acting in this film is fantastic, the directing even better and this one will leave you guessing until what we'll call one of the best twists in a long while!  Check it out!

Mandrill Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Antonio is made an orphan when his parents are brutally murdered. As years of vengeance build up, he transforms into a relentless bounty hunter code-named "Mandrill." His sole mark is to find his parents' murderer and avenge their deaths. While on the job to capture a powerful Mafioso casino owner, Mandrill falls for his target's daughter, Dominique. As he becomes closer to her, he makes a discovery that positions Dominique as an obstacle to his ultimate revenge.

Review: I went into Mandrill thinking I was getting a bad ass revenge flick.  What I got was a bizarre and unexpected throwback to 1970s television!   The campy scenes..the music..the worldplay..it was all just weird.  The film, at its core, is fun..as a spoof or tribute to an era well forgotten.

I Melt With You Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe), and Tim (Christian McKay) are friends from college who gather each year for a hardcore weekend of partying. As the weekend progresses, fueled by sex, drugs, and rock n roll, their reunion drives them to an unexpected place where each is forced to confront himself and the choices he's made in his life.

Review:  What first drew me to I Melt With You was the stellar cast.  What kept me watching was the dark, twisted nature of this fantastic look into middle-aged life.  What happens when you can't shed the demons of your youth?  What happens with you're middle aged and you've screwed it all up. This film is poetic, dramatic and an absolute must see!

Track 29 DVD Review

Synopsis: George Harrison’s Handmade Films presents Track 29, starring Gary Oldman (Tinker Taylor Soldier Spy, Sid and Nancy), Christopher Lloyd (Back to the Future, Taxi), and Theresa Russell (Wild Things). Distraught and dreamy Linda Henry (Russell) is unhappy with her sexless, childless marriage to surgeon Henry Henry (Lloyd). Desperate for a diversion, she is captivated when Martin (Oldman) suddenly drops in on Linda claiming to be the child she gave up for adoption after a teenage pregnancy. They spend time together trying to find a bond, but strange behaviors and bizarre events indicate that things aren’t as they seem. Is Martin really the son she gave up for adoption at birth or just figment of her imagination?

Review: I had never seen Track 29, as the film came out back in 1988 and I was only nine!   Going back now and watching this film, it should definately get some more attention.  The gritty and trippy feel is perfect for this film.  This one is a definate precursor to the themes found in Fight Club a decade later.   The cast is to die for...Christopher Lloyd and Gary Oldman.  Oldman turns in a fantastic early performance and really blows you away with his insanity.  I highly recommend this to anyone that digs underground and subversive film.

London Boulevard Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: The directorial debut of William Monahan, the Oscar®-winning screenwriter of The Departed, London Boulevard follows an ex-con trying to make a fresh start in a relationship with a reclusive actress. A sexy, stylish gangster thriller bristling with wit and brutal intrigue, London Boulevard stars Colin Farrell and Keira Knightley as star-crossed lovers who run afoul of one of London’s most vicious crime bosses.

Review: London Boulevard is a bizarre film.  Its rather erratic and all over the place with characters and plot.  It stars two amazing actors in Farrell and Knightly and they both deliver a great performance.  This one is all fun and if you're not looking to take something too seriously, it'll be a great watch for you.

J. Edgar Blu-Ray / DVD Combo Review

Synopsis: Leonardo DiCaprio (Inception, Blood Diamond) stars as J. Edgar Hoover, head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation for nearly 50 years. Hoover was feared, admired, reviled and revered, a man who could distort the truth as easily as he upheld it. His methods were at once ruthless and heroic, with the admiration of the world his most coveted prize. But behind closed doors, he held secrets that would have destroyed his image, his career and his life. Oscar Winner Clint Eastwood (Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, Unforgiven) directs an all-star cast including Naomi Watts (21 Grams), Armie Hammer (The Social Network) and Oscar Winner Judi Dench (Shakespeare in Love) as Hoover’s overprotective mother.

Review: J. Edgar Hoover was one of the most colorful figures in recent American political history.   This new biopic, directed by the legendarily dark director Clint Eastwood.  This film is moody, long and at times dry.  On the other hand, its also absolutely flawlessly presented and perfect for the subject matter.  DiCaprio delivers an amazing performance as Hoover and shows the multi-faceted character in his best and worst lights.  We highly recommend this one.

Martha Marcy May Marlene Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In her stunning feature film debut, Elizabeth Olsen delivers "an electrifying, star-is-born performance" (Rolling Stone) in this gripping psychological thriller that is "far and away one of the year's best" (Associated Press)! After escaping from a dangerous cult and the watchful eye of its charismatic leader (Academy Award(R) Nominee John Hawkes), a young woman named Martha (Olsen) tries to reclaim a normal life with her family. But the haunting memories from Martha's past trigger a chilling paranoia - and nowhere seems safe as the fragile line between her reality and delusions begin to blur.

Review: If you or someone that you love was exposed to life in a cult, how would the aftermath be?  How do you return to society after a traumatic experience?  This film introduces the youngest Olsen sister as the ex-victim of a disturbing cult.  The dual story shows her experiences in the cult and her recovery with her sister.  This one is rather emotional and definately a fantastic drama.

Pac-Man: The Complete First Season DVD Review

Synopsis: Pac-Man! The game that gobbled up a nation’s quarters while its hero gobbled up those annoying Ghost Monsters spawned sequels, spin-offs, toys, games and more. Taking note of Pac-Man’s avid fan base, famed carton studio Hanna-Barbera hit upon the idea of adapting the game for Saturday morning animation – becoming the first video game to make the jump to TV. Kids were immediately enraptured and a score of other arcade favorites soon followed Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and Baby Pac-Man from the gaming console to the cathode ray tube. In this 2-Disc, 13-Episode collection, Pac-Man does battle with Inky, Blinky, Pinky, Clyde and Sue, the Ghost Monster minions of the dreaded Mezmaron, who lusts after Pac-land’s precious power spheres. Aided by his plucky and charming wife and son, Pac-Man saves the Pac-President, confronts the vampiric Pacula, discovers the Abominable Pac-Man and more. Pac-Venture awaits – no quarters required

Review: Pac-Man was a HUGE character in his time.  He still lives on as the first symbol of the gaming era.  This cartoon, which lasted two seasons, gets a first season release from the Warner Archive.  Available only online, this great vintage animation series is the first Hanna-Barbera cartoon that was based on a video game.  The premise is simple. the Pac-Man family is in a constant feud with the ghost monsters.  Thats about it!  This one is fun and oh so vintage.  The picture quality is fantastic and its a treat to be able to watch this show for the first time in 30 years!   This one is a must-have for any gamer, fan of vintage animation or pop culture!

Joined by local military man Daniel Dembele, who is also searching for his son, both men join forces, all the while battling against the ever-present threat of the living dead!

Review: This one is touted as "the best zombie movie of the year".  How many zombie movies have really come out this year?  I know the genre has gotten all trendy.  In fact, its replaced vampires as the posh go-to monster.  Sigh.  Those of us that have been with zombies since back in the day will be able to appreciate the sheer monstrosity of the reality created within 'The Dead'.  This film takes a fresh angle at the epicdemic by exploring its ramifications in another part of the world, outside of the cityscape.  This one is a great watch for any fan.  The gore is there..the action is there...fun all around.

Packing heat and shedding her habit, this sister of no mercy embarks on a relentless rampage against these unholy men of the cloth and their partners in crime, a vicious biker gang known as Los Muertos. Packed with sex, violence, and wall-to-wall mayhem, this outrageous modern cult favorite in the tradition of the greatest drive-in action classics proves that hell hath no fury like a nude nun scorned.

Review: What does one say about a movie with a title like this?  Okay, in order to enjoy this movie you have to A> have a dark sense of humor B> not be uptight about religion C> enjoy lots of nudity and violence.   If you can add up A+B+C, then this is the film for you.  This nunsploitation opus has everything a b-movie fan will want.  It does take itself a little more seriously than the old grindhouse films would have, but thats okay..it actually makes it work better in today's world.  We cannot recommend this one enough..its fantastic.

All Things Fall Apart Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson) is a college running back with a fierce combination of blazing speed and stunning power. At the pinnacle of his college football career and gearing up to start a successful NFL one, life unexpectedly takes a turn and what was once easy and natural becomes unattainable. With his football career in serious jeopardy, Deon begins to realize a startling truth…he is not the man he thought he was. Equipped with this newfound information, Deon sets out to better himself by reuniting his family and picking up the pieces of his life. All Things Fall Apart is a triumphant and touching story about a man who loses everything, but gains the world. Also starring Lynn Whitfield, Mario Van Peebles and Ray Liotta.

Review: I don't often give credit to rappers turned actors.  They aren't much to write home about, lets be honest here.   One of the few exceptions seems to be Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson.  I'm not a fan of his music or persona, but he certainly does a nice job of a jock hit like a bus with reality in "All Things Fall Apart".  Any fan of 50 will be excited to see him in such a serious film and non-believers will be delighted at how genuine of a performance he provides.  This one is a great watch.

Synopsis: With the kind help of friends and neighbors, widower and aquarium worker Sam Wong (Jet Li) shares a contented life with his autistic 22-year-old son, David (Lunmei Kwai). That is until Sam learns that he has a terminal illness that will soon leave David orphaned. Now, the doting father begins a quest to ensure that his boy will be loved and cared for after his death. Xiao Lu Xue directs this touching drama.

Review: When American moviegoers think dramatic acting the first name that comes to mind isn't likely to be Jet Li.   One of the negatives about genre film is that we get to see one side of an actor.  Jackie Chan, for example, is a fantastic actor, but we only want to see him jumping around like a monkey.  The same could be said for Li.  Ocean Heaven is a fantastic example of just what Li has to offer as a serious actor.  This film, dealing with autism and the harsh realities that can come with it, is serious, touching and may enduce some teary eyes from time to time.  We do highly recommend checking it out.

The special features on this DVD include: Jet Li interview about Autism, Deleted Scenes, Photo Gallery and Trailers.

The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: In celebration of the 25th Anniversary of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera, Cameron Mackintosh produced a unique, spectacular staging of the musical on a scale which had never been seen before. Inspired by the original staging by Hal Prince and Gillian Lynne, this lavish, fully-staged production set in the sumptuous Victorian splendour of London’s legendary Royal Albert Hall features a cast and orchestra of over 200, plus some very special guest appearances.

Review: The Phantom of the Opera is arguably one of the finest musicals of all time.   This special anniversary staging took place in London and was a sight to behold.  Of course, many of us aren't able to make such a monumntal event, so what is a fan to do?  You purchase this blu-ray, of course, and you watch it yourself in high-definition.  This isn't some junky straight recording like the old days either. Its well-edited and an enjoyable watch.  The next best thing to being there.  We highly recommend.

Fireflies In The Garden DVD Review

Synopsis: To an outsider, the Taylors are the very picture of the successful American family: Charles (Willem Dafoe) is a tenured professor on track to become university president, son Michael (Ryan Reynolds) is a prolific and well-known romance novelist, daughter Ryne (Shannon Lucio) is poised to enter a prestigious law school, and on the day we are introduced to them, matriarch Lisa (Julia Roberts) will graduate from college—decades after leaving to raise her children. But when a serious accident interrupts the celebration, the far more nuanced reality of this Midwestern family’s history and relationships come to light.

Review: I went into this film thinking it'd be another lame direct to DVD film.  That couldn't be further from the proof.  What I found was a well thought out, well acted and fantastically casted drama.  We're talking everyone from Ryan Reynolds to Julia Roberts and Wilem Defoe!  This film examines the tender reality behind the "perfect family" and hits on some pretty intense tones of abuse.   This one is heartfelt, deep and absolutely riveting.  We highly recommend.

Review: This romantic comedy is certainly not what I'm used to.  Honestly, the plot isn't terribly original..I'd even go so far to say cliche.  Rich guy is looking to settle down and is looking for what his heart wants outside of what is expected of him.  Its a cute film and definately great to watch with your honey.

Synopsis: The team who brought you "Versus" have returned with another hard-edged battle royale featuring tough gangsters, deadly women and cybernetic penis implants! Ex-yakuza Shozo Iwaki (Tak Sakaguchi) engages in a titanic battle of revenge against double-crossing Kurawaki, the man who killed his father. After a building-leveling skirmish, Shozo wakes up with an M61 Vulcan cannon in place of his right arm, and a rocket launcher where his left leg used to be. Shozo quickly learns to love his weaponized frame, and prepares for a bloody rematch with Kurawaki, who has some mechanical improvements of his own. Co-directed by Yudai Yamaguchi and Tak Sakaguchi, creators of action-filled comedies like "Battlefield Baseball", "Cromartie High School" and "Be A Man! Samaurai School", and based on an adult comic by Ken Ishikawa, ("Cutie Honey", "GetterRobot" and more), "Yakuza Weapon" combines hard-boiled gangster action, manga-style comedy and splatterific special effects. Tough as nails, armed to the teeth, pissed-off and looking for a fight, "Yakuza Weapon" is coming to kick your ass.

Review: Yakuza Weapon is the latest martial arts epic starring the man..the legend: Tak Sakaguchi.  This film is a typical asian martial arts revenge flick that turns into an absolute blood orgy.  I don't say that lightly, this film has everything you want...it is an absolute dream and I cannot recommend it enough.

Synopsis: You'll love this fresh and funny romantic comedy starring Academy Award(R) Winner Catherine Zeta-Jones ("No Reservations", "Ocean's Twelve") and Justin Bartha ("The Hangover", "National Treasure"). When Sandy (Zeta-Jones) catches her husband fooling around with her friend, she packs up the kids, moves to Manhattan, and starts a new life. Soon, unexpected sparks are flying between Sandy and her new "nanny" - who also happens to be twenty years younger! Falling in love and freaking out, Sandy must decide if her feelings for Aram are real or is Aram catching her on "The Rebound".

Review: The Rebound is a modern love story.  This one could even be categorized as a "chick flick", but I don't think thats fair.  This film has its laughs and good moments that will appeal to all viewers.  The film focuses on two people on the rebound..on top of that she is a cougar...this one is definately modern...but sweet.

Review: Lady and the Tramp is one of my favorite Disney films. This timeless tale about finding love on the wrong side of the tracks is still one of the finest they ever made.  Its fantastic to watch Disney taking advantage of this new technology to restore and re-finish their vintage film.  The movie looks so fantastic, crisp and full of color on blu-ray!

Geek Charming DVD Review

Synopsis: When Dylan Schoenfield, Woodlands Academy's top girl, accidentally drops her expensive "it" handbag into the mall fountain, she is surprised that film geek, Josh Rosen, retrieves it for her. In exchange for rescuing her bag, Dylan must agree to be the subject of Josh's documentary film. Dylan hopes the film will help her campaign for Blossom Queen - she claims that winning is her only life goal. Josh plans to make a hard-hitting expose about popularity, but, as he gets to know Dylan, he learns that the real Dylan is much more interesting than the persona she's created. At the last minute, Josh decides that his film should introduce this awesome girl to the world, but how will Dylan react when she sees it.

Review: Disney is infamous for making fantastic films and one of the genres that they have excelled in due to their Disney Channel is the tween/teen drama.  Geek Charming is another great example of an underdog story with a heart.  This one does something that tweens desperately need..a good moral lesson hidden inside a romantic comedy.  This one gets thumbs up.

The special features on this DVD include: 10 Bonus Episodes of Shake It Up.

Interest Range: Tween-Teen

A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas (Single-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review

Synopsis: Following years of growing apart, Harold Lee (Cho) and Kumar Patel (Penn) have replaced each other with new friends and are preparing for their respective Yuletide celebrations. But when a mysterious package mistakenly arrive at Kumar’s door on Christmas Eve, his attempts to redirect it to Harold’s house ends with the “high grade” contents – and Harold’s father-in-law’s prize Christmas tree – going up in smoke. With his in-laws out of the house for the day, Harold decides to cover his tracks, rather than come clean. Reluctantly embarking on another ill-advised journey with Kumar, through New York City, their search for the perfect replacement tree takes them through party heaven – and almost blows Christmas Eve sky high.

Review: I'm not a big fan of the Harold and Kumar movies.  They just don't appeal to me..I guess they're a little too junior high.  This one, however, did strike a bit of a cord.  Its one of those 'what happens later'  films.  Harold and Kumar are no longer friends and even have new best friends.  They are flung back together in one last (yeah, right) adventure when a package is delivered by accident for Kumar.  This movie is dumb, but its better than the previous installments.

Synopsis: In a race against a devious cat the buddies and their new friends cammy and babi must avoid booby traps solve puzzles and explore a mysterious tomb - all in search of the greatest treasure known to animalkind.

Review: Treasure Buddies is the latest installment in the popular Disney series of "Buddy" flicks that focus on a group of friendly dogs.  My daughter is absolutely crazy about these movies..and I mean crazy.  I had to hear about Treasure Buddies for months before it even came out.  these films are great, because they have return characters, great lessons and a nice atmosphere for some appropriate humor for kids.  This new installment introduces a few cute new characters, including a monkey, and takes the buddies on a great all-new adventure.  Its sure to please any little fan of these films!
