Review: The Universe is one of the best documentary series that we've seen in a long while.  We've been covering it as the individual seasons are released and now this educational space-epic is being released in a huge ultimate megaset on blu-ray.  This Megaset includes seasons 1-5 on blu-ray, plus the 7 Wonders of the Solar System special.

Not only does dad enjoy this one, my wife and kids all love it, as well.  They're just learning about space in the classroom and they can come home to really SEE space in all its glory.  This elusive aspect of nature wasn't available for viewing like this when I was growing up...its a real treat.   This is without a doubt one of the best series on space ever created.  This set is a MUST HAVE!

South Park: The Complete Fourteenth Season DVD Review

Synopsis: All fourteen episodes from South Park's notorious 14th Season are packed into this exclusive three-disc set. Join Stan, Kyle, Cartman and Kenny as they dive into social networking, defend against annoying Jersey “muff cabbage” and finally reveal the secret identity of Mysterion in an epic three-part saga. Top that with some never-before-seen deleted scenes and a little crème fraiche, and you’ve got a collection that will leave you drooling. Shablagoo!!

Review: South Park is the absolute best when it comes to controvertial humor.  The Simpsons laid the groundwork and South Park took it that much further.  Family Guy doesn't even come close to the charm and wit of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's creations!

The fourteenth season of the show was full of great episodes, such as the Jersey Shore spoof "It's a Jersey Thing", "Sexual Healing" and "Crippled Summer".  Its a solid season and this is a perfect release for any fan of the show.  The only issue with this DVD set is that the infamous episodes 200 and 201 are still censored, as they were when they aired.

The special features on this DVD set include: Mini-Audio Commentary by Trey Parker and Matt Stone on all episodes, Bonus Episode: #1302 The Coon (airdate: 03/18/2009) and Deleted Scenes.

Interest Range: Animation, Comedy Central

Review: Patty Hearst is a fantastic biopic about the real-life heiress that is infamous for developing a serious case of stockholm syndrome after she was kidnapped by the SLA decades ago.  This film is half biopic and half art house film.  Its a great film, because it really shows a great feel for the era with the sometimes trippy filmmaking.  This is a manufacture DVD on demand from MGM, so don't look for this one in stores.

The Boy Friend DVD Review

THE BOY FRIEND is now on DVD at WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_Boyfriend

Synopsis: The star has injured an ankle, but the show – and inexperienced stage assistant Polly Browne – must go on. Break a leg, kid. And don’t let the presence of Hollywood director and talent scout Mr. De Thrill add any pressure. And so begins this colorful tale of theater hopefuls with stars in their eyes and greasepaint in their veins, a work that, under the guidance of director Ken Russell, is not just an affectionate filmization of Sandy Wilson’s London/Broadway stage hit but also an homage to the movie stagings of Busby Berkeley – complete with imaginative use of kaleidoscopic top shots and rows of leggy chorines. Fashion icon Twiggy makes her screen debut as sweet-natured Polly, a role played earlier by Julie Andrews in her Broadway debut. Curtain up. Maybe someone will be discovered tonight.

Review: The Boy Friend is the 1971 film adaptation of the 1954 hit London-based musical stage play.  The film is also a musical and starred then hot item, and former model, Twiggy.  Twiggy was granted two golden globes for her role in the film.   The film is a charming musical about an up and coming actress.

There are two versions of this film.  The original theatrical was 109 minutes long, while the extended version (first made available in the late 1980s on VHS) was 137 minutes in length.  The Warner Archive, famous for releasing long lost film, is releasing the extended 137 minute version via their online made-to-order DVDs!  The picture looks great and the film is a ton of fun!

The special features include a vintage "behind the scenes" making-of featurette about the film.

Interest Range: Vintage Film, Twiggy

Hold On DVD Review

HOLD ON! is now on DVD only at the WarnerArchive.com: http://bit.ly/WAC_HoldOn

Synopsis:The career of the British Invasion pop group Herman’s Hermits was in full, fan-shrieking, disc-selling orbit when their first top-billed movie came to theaters, so maybe it’s only natural to think NASA would want to name a rocket after them. Well, at least that’s what’s at stake in this 1966 romp that has the five lads on a U.S. tour, where they’re mobbed by various birds – and secretly monitored by a nerdy scientist to determine if they are rocket worthy. Yes, Hold On! is not so much about making sense as it is about having fun. A double fistful of Hermits' songs (including the Top-10 hits A Must to Avoid and Leaning on the Lamp Post) adds to the good times. Shelley Fabares, no stranger to the charts with 1962’s Johnny Angel, costars.

Review: Hold On was a 1966 promotional vehicle for the boy band  Herman's Hermits.   There was also an album by the same name that served as the soundtrack for the film.  This formula was also used by the Monkeys and the Beatles in various ways back in the 1960s.  The Warner Archive is releasing this classic on DVD through their online store, wbshop.com.

This space race-era comedy is also a little PR boost for NASA, pre-moon landing.  The film is in color and features a very decent transfer resolution.  Its a very funny film and definately one to watch for fans of the band.  Even if you're not a fan of the band, they have great personalities and really shine on screen.  This reminds me of the modern day incarnations of this formula, like Nickelodeon's "Big Time Rush".   A great movie that has been lost for some time!  We definately recommend.

Review: Definance is a 1980 classic film starring a young Jan-Michael Vincent.  The movie centers around a young seaman who battles gangs in his neighborhood.  The film is full of suspense and violence as this drama unfolds.  This film is a great watch and has been hard to find in recent years.  MGM is finally releasing this on DVD as a manufacture on demand release.

Review: This 1972 remake of the classic story stars Charlton Heston as the lead in this epic tale of a man who grows attached to his sled dog.  They have extensive snow adventures, including hunting for gold.  This remake doesn't quite have the magic of the original 1935 Clark Gable version, but its definately a nice update.  This is a manufacture on demand DVD from MGM, so don't expect to see this in stores...online only!

Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure (Two-Disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo) Review

Synopsis: Just how fabulous do you have to be to make it big in the Big Apple? One aspiring diva is about to find out...the hard way! Ashley Tisdale shines in this totally captivating comedy.

After a talent scout spots her performing with her dog Boi at a charity gala, Sharpay Evans (Tisdale) sets off for the bright lights of NYC, convinced instant fame and fortune are in the bag (designer bag, that is). But theatre's a dog-eat-dog world, as she and Boi discover when they encounter the devious owner of a pampered pooch named "Countess" and a scheming Broadway starlet who will do anything to crush the competition. Fortunately, Sharpay also meets Peyton (Austin Butler), a handsome student filmmaker who finds Sharpay nearly as fascinating as she finds herself.

Sparkling with fun, fashion and fantastic bonus features, Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure will make your whole family stand up and cheer!

Review: Sharpay's Fabulous Adventure is a spinoff of the popular High School Musical series, based on the character of Sharpay Evans, played by Ashley Tisdale.  This classic tale of a mix-up by a dopey celebutant blonde takes her life on a charming tale that includes everything from friendship, love, stardom and of course...puppy love.

Tisdale does a nice job in the role, along with her supporting cast.  The dog, of course, steals the show.  This is a nice one to watch with your tweens!

The special features include: Bloopers, Austin cam - Austin Butler student film (BD only) and Evolution Of Sharpay (BD only).

Ashley Tisdale on the movie:
How would you describe Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure?

"Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure is a fun, energetic new adventure for Sharpay. We get to step into Sharpay’s world in the new movie and we see her at home with her parents – but then she heads off to New York City to follow her dreams!

How would you describe Sharpay?

"Sharpay is a fun-loving, pink diva. She has always had everything she ever wanted, but that soon changes in the new movie. She goes to New York to fulfill her dream of being on Broadway, but it’s not as easy as she thought it was going to be."

The King's Speech Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: After the death of his father King George V (Michael Gambon) and the scandalous abdication of King Edward VIII (Guy Pearce), Bertie (Colin Firth) who has suffered from a debilitating speech impediment all his life, is suddenly crowned King George VI of England. With his country on the brink of war and in desperate need of a leader, his wife, Elizabeth (Helena Bonham Carter), the future Queen Mother, arranges for her husband to see an eccentric speech therapist, Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush). After a rough start, the two delve into an unorthodox course of treatment and eventually form an unbreakable bond. With the support of Logue, his family, his government and Winston Churchill (Timothy Spall), the King will overcome his stammer and deliver a radio-address that inspires his people and unites them in battle. Based on the true story of King George VI, THE KING'S SPEECH follows the Royal Monarch's quest to find his voice.
Review: The King's Speech is a great historical drama.  Its worth is balanced as much on the back of the amazing cast as it does on the story itself.  The historical drama based on King George VI includes the stellar talents of Helena Bonham Carter, Geoffrey Rush and the uncomparable Colin Firth.  This film has been recognized through various awards this year and its very clear that the moviegoing public has backed this one, so we wanted to give it a good watch and try to be as critical as possible.  Here at the Legion we don't buy into hype!  The cold hard reality is that this is a well-made film.  The core greatness of this story is seeing such a powerful and fantastic historical figure full of power be so flawed and having to overcome such a human condition.  We can't recommend this one enough for the entire family!

IP Man 2: 2-Disc Collector's Edition Blu-Ray Review

Review: We're connoisseurs of martial arts film here at the Legion, both retro and campy and modern serious!  Hands down one of the best franchises to emerge over the past two decades is IP Man!  This sequel to the original epic biopic gives us a bit more fighting than the original and less focus on the social backround of the characters of the time, but does give us that oh so desired look at the sensei's first meeting with the beloved martial arts master Bruce Lee.   This film is full of action and looks fantastic in high-definition.  This film is strong and definately is a deserving sequel to the original.  I don't think fans will be disappointed.

The special features on this blu-ray include: Bonus Features, Making Of, Behind The Sets, Deleted Scenes, Shooting Diary, Interviews, Trailers and an English Language track.

Interest Range: Action, Martial Arts

A corrupt group of martial arts masters, led by Master Hung (Sammo Hung) refuses to allow him to teach in peace until he proves himself as a kung fu master. Ip s troubles continues when he is forced to enter a brutal King of the Ring boxing match against Twister, a Western-style boxer who insults the Chinese locals, in a East versus West knock-down, drag-out fight to the finish.

On their own and on the run, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever…but Dark Forces in their midst threaten to tear them apart. Meanwhile the wizarding world has become a dangerous place. The long-feared war has begun and the Dark Lord has seized control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting all who might oppose him. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort…alive.

Review: What do you say about Harry Potter?  This is hands-down the most epic fantasy series ever put to book and movie form in our history.  The Lord of the Rings was phenominal, but Harry Potter is more much more accessible to the public.  That being said, the Deathly Hollows is certainly a darker turn for the gang at Hogwarts.

You can feel that the end is coming in this first half of the final film.  The special effects look more amazing than ever, especially on blu-ray high-definition.  The tone and the mood has gotten darker as things begin to come to a head.  The one who must not be spoken is alive and well and has send deatheaters after Harry!  This film is full of action and magic and isn't to be missed!

Square Grouper: Godfathers of Ganja DVD Review

Synopsis: In 1979, the U.S. Customs Service reported that 87% of all marijuana seizures in the U.S. were made in the South Florida area. Due to the region's 5,000 miles of coast and coastal waterways and close proximity to the Caribbean and Latin America, South Florida was a pot smuggler's paradise. In sharp contrast to the brazenly violent cocaine cowboys of the 1980s, Miami's marijuana smugglers were cooler, calmer, and typically nonviolent. Square Grouper paints a vivid portrait of Miami's pot smuggling culture in the '70s and '80s and its major players: the smuggling Black Tuna Gang, the pot dealing Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church and the tiny fishing village Everglades City.

Review: This is another great documentary from the creator of "Cocaine Cowboys", Billy Corben.  The pacing in this documentary about marijuana smuggling in Florida is at a much more mellow pace...and appropriately so!  There are three different stories involved and they're presented with a lot of imagination and creativity.  The focus is on the Ethiopian Zion Coptic Church, the Black Tuna Gang and the small town of Everglade City.  The only downside to this film is the country music score.  Its a little strange considering the subject matter.

There are a few cool special features, including a Touring Ten Thousand Islands featurette, deleted scenes, and a bit about the songs of the film.

The Way Back Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Four-time Oscar nominee, Ed Harris (Apollo 13), Jim Sturgess (Across the Universe) and Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan (Atonement) and Colin Farrell (In Bruges) star in this epic saga of survival from six-time Oscar-nominee Peter Weir (Witness, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World). Inspired by an incredible true story, The Way Back begins in 1940 when seven prisoners attempt the impossible: escape from a brutal Siberian gulag. Thus begins a treacherous 4,500-mile trek to freedom across the world's most merciless landscapes. They have little food and few supplies. They don't know or trust each other. But together, they must withstand nature at its most extreme. Their humanity is further tested when they meet a teenage runaway who begs to join them on their quest. A compelling testament to the human spirit, this gripping wilderness adventure is "Peter Weir at his hypnotic best" (Telluride Film Festival).

Review: The Way Back is an epic WWII tale told from a perspective that you don't often see...those held in Russia, rather than Germany.    This film documents their almost 5,000 mile trek across Siberia from a prison on their way to India..and to freedom.  Its an unlikely grouping of people that don't exactly get along, and they find a way to work together to survive rather teacherous natural conditions from a tundra to the desert.  This film is rather epic in scale and has some great performances, especially from Ed Harris and Colin Farrell.   Its definately worth checking out.

Review: American Dad is a late-comer to the world of adult animation.  The show has gained a decent cult following and has started to really come into it's own.  This sixth volume of the show gives us a TON of episodes and a ton of extras to go along with them (see below).   This DVD volume is special, because its the first full-season American Dad release we've seen, featuring all 18 episodes from season 5 of the show!  If you're a fan of this show then this DVD is a no-brainer.  The only downside we could find was that some of the episodes are still censored, as in bleeping out cursing.  We're unsure for the reasoning on this one, but beware!  Otherwise its a great release.

The special features include:

Disc One Extras
Commentary on In Country... Club featuring Matt Weitzman, Albert Calleros, Murray Miller, Judah Miller and Lauren Caltagirone
Uncensored audio/scenes on select episodes
Deleted Scenes

Disc Two Extras
Commentary on My Morning Straightjacket featuring Mike Barker, Chris Bennett, Brent Woods and Matt Fusfeld
Commentary on Rapture's Delight featuring Mike Barker, Matt McKenna, Joe Daniello, Jeff Rebner and Kevin Thresher
Alternate Commentary on Rapture's Delight featuring The Interdisciplinary Collective for American Dad Studies
Commentary on A Jones for a Smith featuring Mike Barker, John Aoshima, Jansen Yee, Laura McCreary and Matt Fusfeld

Street Kings 2: Motor City Blu-Ray Review

Synopsis: Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) delivers an intense, electrifying performance in this explosive follow-up to the gritty urban crime thriller Street Kings. Liotta plays Detroit detective Marty Kingston, the leader of an undercover narcotics team, whose members are being systematically murdered one by one. To solve the brutal killings, Kingston joins forces with a cocky, young homicide detective. But neither of them is prepared for the shocking corruption their investigation will uncover--stunning secrets that will set both men on a violent collision course with betrayal and vengeance.

Review: Street Kings 2 is a direct to blu-ray sequel that really breaks the mold and bad reputation of previous direct to video films.  The original Street Kings was a star-studded hit, and while this one has a more b-list cast, it still includes crime drama great Ray Liotta!

The script isn't that fanastic on this one, but the acting quality is great and I was really blown away, considering this is one of those knock-off sequels.  The cops dig into some murders to find out that the corruption goes all the way to the top, a typical crime drama sequence of events ensue.  Its not terribly original, but is still very entertaining.

The special features on this blu-ray include: Deleted Scenes, Murder Scene Deconstructions, Creating a Convincing Cop Story, An Explosive Opening, Motor City Setting and Weapons Check - Personality Profile (Blu-ray Exclusive).

Behind the Burly Q DVD Review

Synopsis: Burlesque was one of America's most popular forms of live entertainment in the first half of the 20th century. Gaudy, bawdy and spectacular, the shows entertained thousands of paying customers every night of the week. And yet the legacy of burlesque is often vilified and misunderstood, and left out of the history books. By telling the intimate and surprising stories from its golden age through the women (and men!) who lived it, Behind the Burly Q reveals the true story of burlesque, even as it experiences a new renaissance.

Review: Burlesque is a fantastic art form that has survived the test of time.  This new documentary preserves and chronicles the birth burlesque and its evolution from the early vaudeville.  Through interviews and tons of video footage we get to see the legacy of this great form of entertainment preserved forever!

The DVD bonus features include: Three Featurettes: The Reunion - Memorabilia & Costumes- Behind the Scenes, Bonus Interviews, Burlesque Timeline, Photo Gallery, Original Theatrical Trailer and Closed Captions. Color & b/w.

History Channel: Third Reich: Rise & Fall DVD Review

Synopsis: HIGHLIGHTS CALENDAR SYNOPSIS:
In HISTORY s two-part, four-hour Special Presentation: THIRD REICH, rare and never-before-seen amateur footage tells the epic story of the Third Reich as it's never been told before: through the eyes of the people who lived it.

THIRD REICH: THE RISE
A unique perspective on the rise of Nazi Germany and how millions of people were so vulnerable to fascism, told through rare and never-before-seen amateur films shot by the Germans who were there.

THIRD REICH: THE FALL
How did the Germans experience the Allied victory in WWII? Rarely-and never-before-seen amateur films recount the catastrophic downfall of the Third Reich through the eyes of the people who lived it: the Germans themselves.

Review: There are dozens and dozens of perfectly good documentaries on the Nazis and World War II.  The fact is that no one does it like the History Channel!  This two-part documentary series features two, two-hour features.  One on the Rise of the Third Reich and one on its epic fall!

The Rise of the Reich is fascinating.  It has some amazing home video footage from German families showing actual life during this era!  The documentary goes over how Hitler expolited the poor economy after WWI in order to obtain power.  Not a lot of new information, but some great never before seen footage!

The second feature is the Fall of the Third Reich, which is a look at the atrocities that happened during the war by the nazis through home videos taken by soldiers and private citizens alike.  What was so great about this feature is that it showed the aftermath of what the Russians did to the German people once they took over!  No one likes to think about how they suffered from not only the Nazi regime, but also the Communists.

This is a fantastic documentary.  We highly recommend!

Dallas: The Movie Collection DVD Review

Synopsis: Big D gets even bigger with three movies and a cast reunion! From 1978 to 1991, the TV series Dallas grew legions of fans with compulsively watchable tales of greed, sexy and schemes – most masterminded by smilin’ J.R. Ewing (Larry Hagman), the double-dealing oilman folks love to hate. Dallas was so popular is also spawned the four exciting pieces in this special collection, starting with a prequel (The Early Years) that sets the stage for the drama to come. The other three, starring Hagman and more beloved cast members, include reunion movies (J. R. Returns, War of the Ewings) that plunge a wheeling-dealing J.R. into plots to take over Ewing Oil and a fascinating retrospective (The Return to Southfork) brimming with clips, outtakes, and reminiscences from your favorite Dallas stars.

Review: This is a great DVD set to round out the Warner Bros. releases of the vintage Dallas TV show.  This collection includes the prequel film, which isn't entirely on-key with the continuity of the show, but is a lot of fun.  The two reunion movies come next.  The J.R. Returns TV reunion movie is the better of the two.  The last feature is a retrospective of the legendary show.  I never thought they'd put out a release like this, but its perfect for any Dallas completist.

The special features on this DVD set include: Dallas Reunion: Return to Southfork:13 years after the series concluded its orginal run, Larry Hagman hosts a behind-the-scenes look at the most exciting moments in Dallas history.

Fifteen years later, they have been forced to adopt civilian identities and retreat to the suburbs to live "normal" lives with their three kids, Violet, Dash, and Jack-Jack. He soon discovers that it will take a super family effort to rescue the world from total destruction. Exploding with fun and all-new bonus features available only on Blu-ray, this spectacular 4-disc combo pack is edge-of-your-seat entertainment for everyone.

Review: The Incredibles is the feature superhero epic from Disney/Pixar studios and the mind of Brad Bird.  The Incredibles is the story of two superheroes that have been forced into retirement by the government, as have all superheroes.  They started a family, who also has super powers that they have to hide from the public.  The evil Syndrome emerges and its necessary for them to come out of hiding and fight evil as a family for the first time!

Disney has finally released this film on blu-ray!  This is probably my favorite Disney Pixar blu-ray release to date!  I wasn't nervous at all about the transfer into high-definition.  The Pixar films are meant to be seen this way in the first place!  They're so far ahead of their time technologically and even the vintage Disney films look amazing on blu-ray.  The Incredibles is no exception.  The film looks absolutely stunning and its FULL of extras!  This set comes with a digital copy AND a copy of the original DVD too!
The special features on this blu-ray set include: The Incredibles Revisited: Filmmakers Roundtable, Paths to Pixar: Story Artists, Studio Stories: Gary's Birthday, Ending With a Bang!: Making the End Credits, Interactive! "The New Nomanisan" Island: A Top Secret Redevelopment Plan and Plus classic DVD features.

Summer In Genoa DVD Review

Synopsis: AFTER HIS WIFE DIES IN A TRAGIC ACCIDENT, JOE MOVES WITH HIS TWO DAUGHTERS TO GENOA. SEDUCED BY THE MYSTERIOUS CITY AND HAUNTED BY THEIR PAST, THE FAMILY SOON FINDS THEMSELVES IN PERIL. STARRING COLIN FIRTH, CATHERINE KEENER AND WILLA HOLLAND. DIRECTED BY MICHAEL WINTERBOTTOM.

Review: On the surface Summer In Genoa is a film about loss, tragedy and moving on.  Underneath that you have feelings of bitterness, anger, lust and confusion.  I found this film to be a bit more complex and interesting than I initially thought it would be, which was a nice surprise.  The acting by Colin Firth sends this film over the top in the credibility scale and really gives it the air of dignity that it needed.  I highly recommend you check this one out if you enjoy drama.
