Bill Moyers on Addiction: Close to Home DVD Review

Synopsis: Addiction can happen to anyone. It is an equal opportunity disease, crossing boundaries of race, creed, and class, destroying individuals, families, and communities. Most Americans have been touched by addiction, including renowned journalist Bill Moyers, whose oldest son struggled with drugs and alcohol.

In this acclaimed five-part series, Moyers looks at substance abuse from all sides: personal, professional, scientific, and political. First, we hear from the real experts: recovering addicts. Then, Moyers talks with scientists who study how drugs change the brain, treatment professionals who help recovering addicts lead healthy lives, and kids in danger of becoming the next generation of addicts. Finally, he reports on the ongoing fight to change our national drug policy. Far-ranging, frank, and compassionate, On Addiction: Close to Home is an in-depth exploration of the heartbreak of addiction and the hope and possibility of recovery..

Review: This series by Bill Moyers, which aired in the UK 14 years ago, was a fantastic and in-depth look at addiction that pre-dated our own "Intervention".  This series was a great and encouraging series for those that are close to those with addiction or even if you are suffering from addiction yourself.  The DVD set includes a great 2012 bonus guide that updates the viewer on any new thought processes on addiction and treatment.

The special features on this DVD set include: 16-page viewer’s guide with an introduction by Bill Moyers; articles on the history of Alcoholics Anonymous, drug policy, and antismoking efforts; "Take a Step" by Ben Alsup; and more Biography of Bill Moyers Plus a list of resources and discussion questions at athenalearning.com.
