W.E. Blu-ray/DVD Combo Review
Synopsis: Madonna's beautifully crafted film tells the story of Wally Winthrop (Abbie Cornish), a lonely New Yorker, who finds a welcomed escape from her troubled relationship when she begins to explore the ultimate love story: King Edward's VIII's (James D'Arcy) scandalous abdication of the British throne for the woman he loved, American divorcee Wallis Simpson (Andrea Riseborough). Wally's research begins at a 1998 Sotheby's auction of the Windsor Estate and takes her on a journey of discovery that reveals how hard it is to live out the world's greatest romance. As she learns more about the sacrifices Wallis made in choosing to be with Edward, Wally finds the courage to make the tough choices in order to create her own happiness.
Review: W/E is an effort put forth by Madonna and I must say that I'm terribly impressed with her on this one. This film is a romantic effort that takes the tone of Julie and Julia where a modern girl looks to a real-life romantic tale of the past where a King gave up his crown to be with a commoner and she struggles to find similar devotion and real love today. This one is a great film and a wonderful commentary on today's culture. Loved it!
