Synopsis: Following the French atomic bomb tests in the South Pacific, an unknown creature is spotted passingwestward through the Panama Canal. Scientist Niko Tatopolous is called in to investigate the matter, and he quickly arrives at the conclusion that a giant, irradiated lizard has been created by the explosions. Godzilla(r) then makes its way north, landing at Manhattan to begin wreaking havoc in the big city. Even with the combined forces of the U.S. military to fight the monster, will it be enough to save the people of New York?

Review: I remember when Godzilla came to theaters back in 1998. My wife and I had been dating at the time for a year and we were very excited to see the film. We used to frequent a local drive-in movie theater and thats where we ended up seeing this one. Taco Bell had a great promotion with cups, a cupholder and kids meal toys back in the day..at the time we collected it all, and we still have it all. I remember the gimmick being the big reveal..no one showed the monster until the movie was released. It was so much fun. Heck, I still use the car cupholder today!

When I heard that Godzilla was coming to blu-ray, I was psyched. I hadn't seen the film in many, many years. Its a great movie, but its not one that I'd watch everyday. Its one of those summertime action blockbusters that is fun to watch a few times a year at most. The film is a lot of fun for all ages. It gets a big intense as Godzilla's spawn overtake the city, but no more than one of the Jurassic Park films.

I was concerned about the transfer to high definition with this new blu-ray release. This film is over a decade old, so I wondered how it would come out. Overall, its not bad. Most of the film is shot in the dark, so there isn't a ton of detail or color to really "pop", but it helps skin tones and does provide some greater resolution in some scenes. The film does include a rather thin layer of grain, which is less than I had feared. Unfortunately, the grain is a guarantee on any films that aren't new. The sound is somewhere that this release really stands out. If you have a home theater system, you can view Godzilla the way it was meant to be! The roars and growls from the monster are absolutely fantastic.
