Top 5 Movies Who Gained Ground in Living Rooms
Debuting its 10th Anniversary Blu-ray on June 14
When The Boondock Saints debuted in 2000, theater-goers weren’t as highly receptive to the now-cult classic, and many other movies have had the same after-the-cinema fate, gaining love and awareness on home entertainment options vs. theatrical runs.
Opening to only five screens on Jan. 21, 2000, the film’s theatrical run only lasted a few weeks before it left cinemas with a $25,812 gross. Now, the movie is seen by film classes, historians and everyday action fans enjoying fraternal twin brothers Connor (Sean Patrick Flannery) and Murphy (Norman Reedus) MacManus “vigilantian” efforts in their city.
Released on home entertainment several times, the R-rated flick gained a following with word of mouth publicity and screenings led by writer/director Troy Duffy. Here are additional films that had better home entertainment showings than box office clout.
- Blade Runner
With a strapping Harrison Ford as Rick Deckard, Blade Runner quickly went in and out of theaters in 1982, only grossing around $6 million. However, it lived on VHS and garnered much acclaim and many audiences, so much so that I has been re-released in theaters several times. Blade Runner takes places in a futuristic Los Angeles (the year 2019) and has our hero Rick working to eliminate four “replicants” who hijacked a space ship. It was nominated or two technical Oscars in 1983, alongside several other honors, like a Golden Globe nod and several BAFTA wins and nominations.
- Heathers
Before Winona Ryder was playing second fiddle to Natalie Portman and Christian Slater was hoping that at least one of his new TV shows would stick around, the two developed a huge following with the teen drama Heathers. In 1989, audiences had a brief chance to catch the dark yet hilarious story of Winona’s Veronica trying (kind of) to be a part of her school’s “in crowd,” as dangerous as it might be. Shannen Doherty also memorably stars. It only opened on 35 screens, but has lived on cable television and all forms of home entertainment.
- Legend
A long-haired Tom Cruise bonding with a white unicorn is the stuff that cult classics are made of and Ridley Scott’s Legend gives audiences just that. Co-starring cult classic king himself Tim Curry, Legend revolves around Jack (Cruise) trying to keep the Lord of Darkness from taking away sunlight and destroying the earth. He also wants to marry the woman he loves. For its opening weekend, Legend only grossed $4 in 1986, but since then, its unicorns, fairies, goblins and demons have delighted fans in their living rooms.
- The Boondock Saints
Written and directed by Troy Duffy, The Boondock Saints did not have a long theater run, however, very few film buffs have not seen it by now. With its violent brothers on mafia killing sprees and Willem Dafoe occasionally dressing in drag, audiences have since eaten this crime drama’s most memorable scenes up.
- The Big Lebowski
Perhaps the film that originated Jeff Bridges as “The Dude” might be the ultimate cult classic, as the Coen Brothers’ fan favorite The Big Lebowski only opened with a $5 million weekend and went on to gross just over $17 million. Now, “The Dude” is an official part of pop culture lexicon and phrases like “That rug really tied the room together” live on in casual conversations with film lovers.
