Review: When I heard that Jared Hess, the director of Napoleon Dynamite and Jemaine from Flight of the Conchords had gotten together on a film, I knew not only that I had to see it, but that it was going to be ackward and hilarious.

Sam Rockwell's performance is over the top as sci-fi character 'Bronco'.  That won't be surprising to anyone that saw the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy.   The movie is scene after scene of odd and quirky behavior from odd characters.  Its really one of the most ackward things I've ever seen.  I can see what they were going for with the comedic angle, but all too often is just doesn't connect.  The film ends up being a lot of characters without soul that you can't really attach yourself to.

What does stand out as positive is Jemain Clement's performance as Chevalier, a famous sci-fi author that main character Benjamin Purvis idolizes.  Chevalier is the epitome of a douchey science fiction guy.  Jemain plays him so very well..down to the creepy voice.  He turns out to be the heel of the film, of course.

There isn't a lot for extras to speak of.  The blu-ray transfer quality does look great.  This movie tries very hard..almost too hard to be quirky and clever.  It may appeal to you, but fair warning it is very dry and very difficult to sit through at times.  It lacks the spirit that Napoleon Dynamite harnessed.

Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars
