The Ultimate Wave: Tahiti (IMAX) Blu-ray 3D Review

Synopsis: THE ULTIMATE WAVE: TAHITI plunges you into the stunning beauty of an island paradise on a quest to find the perfect wave-riding experience. Nine-time world surfing champion Kelly Slater and Tahitian surfer Raimana Van Bastolaer and a group of friends seek out the best waves breaking on the reef at Tahiti's famed surf site Teahupo'o. As their quest unfolds, you are plunged beneath the surface of things, to explore the hidden forces at work shaping ocean waves and the islands that lie in their path.Amidst surfing action, you navigate the cosmos and an ocean storm in a search for the source and nature of a wave's energy. Exploring mountainous Tahiti, you are thrust into the turbulent volcanic past of the island and its neighbors and discover the seagoing, wave-riding roots of the islanders themselves -- a culture still rich in the music, dance and lore of the sea. Beneath the ocean, swimming with surfers, you explore the stunning, fragile beauty of the reef habitat -- a turbulent, wave-shaping interface that envelops the island and nurtures the ocean's multitudes in motion -- fish, dolphins, sharks and whales. When the truly big surf arrives at Teahupo'o, surfing play becomes surfing survival as the riders artfully tackle some of the heaviest surf on the planet!

Review: We wouldn't normally spotlight a feature like this one, but its really a great showcase for high-definition and 3D technology.  This new blu-ray comes in a set that will play in 2D and 3D players, so everyone can enjoy this.

If you're watching the high-definition 2D blu-ray version you're going to see bold and outstanding colors in the backrounds of Tahiti and the skin tones of the tanned beach bums!  The definition in the water is beyond stunning and this feature really stands-out as an amazing piece.

If you're watching the 3D version...then you're winning!  (Sorry, have to make Charlie Sheen references now).  The feature will give you waves coming right out at you, along with some of the surfers.  There is no ghosting and the 3D quality on this release is above and beyond most that we've seen to date.

This is a really fun set to watch, especially if you enjoy surfing.   The bonus features include: a Trailer Galler and Vignettes: 'Board Design, Kelly Slater, Raimana, Tahiti Wave Science'.

Interest Range: Surfing
